13 best starter climbing shoes
Starter climbing shoes are designed for beginners who are just getting started with rock climbing. These shoes are typically versatile, comfortable, and provide a good balance between support and sensitivity. Here's what you need to know about starter climbing shoes:
Purpose of Starter Climbing Shoes:
- Starter climbing shoes are intended for novice climbers who are learning the basics of climbing techniques.
- They are ideal for indoor climbing walls, bouldering, and introductory outdoor climbing.
Features of Starter Climbing Shoes:
- Comfort: These shoes are designed with comfort in mind, as beginners may spend longer periods climbing while learning the ropes.
- Neutral Shape: Starter shoes usually have a more neutral shape, offering a flatter sole and less aggressive downturn compared to advanced climbing shoes. This allows for a more relaxed fit.
- Stiffness: They tend to be moderately stiff, providing support to the foot and preventing excessive fatigue during climbs.
- Adjustability: Some starter climbing shoes come with laces or Velcro straps, allowing users to adjust the fit to their preference.
- Durable Construction: Durability is a key factor, as beginner climbers may drag their feet or make more contact with the climbing wall.
Sizing:
- Climbing shoe sizing can vary between brands and models. It's important to find a snug fit without causing discomfort or pain.
- Some climbers prefer a tighter fit for better performance, while beginners often opt for a more comfortable fit.
Indoor vs. Outdoor Climbing:
- Starter climbing shoes are suitable for both indoor and outdoor climbing, but they may not be as specialized as shoes designed for specific climbing disciplines.
Price Range:
- Starter climbing shoes are typically more budget-friendly compared to advanced, specialized climbing shoes. Prices can vary depending on the brand and features.
Maintenance:
- Proper care and maintenance, such as cleaning and drying your climbing shoes after each use, can help prolong their lifespan.
Transitioning to Advanced Shoes:
- As climbers gain experience and skill, they may eventually transition to more specialized climbing shoes that offer increased sensitivity and precision for more challenging routes.
Safety Considerations:
- Climbing shoes are an important part of a climber's safety gear. Beginners should also use appropriate safety equipment, such as a harness and helmet, and follow safety guidelines.
Starter climbing shoes are a great choice for individuals who are new to climbing and are looking for a comfortable and supportive option to help them develop their skills. Remember that while climbing shoes are essential, learning proper climbing techniques, safety procedures, and seeking guidance from experienced climbers or instructors are equally important when starting out in this sport.

User questions & answers
Question: | I usually wear 45 EU size, and i see here people say the sizing is too high and other say its too small. So which size should I buy |
Answer: | I normally wear a 44 EU (10 US) and I bought them that size. I wish I would have gotten a half size smaller (43 or 42 EU) because they do run a little big. |
Question: | Are these for pros |
Answer: | I wouldn't call them pro shoes, but they are great shoes in general. The rubber is not very hard and not very soft, and the shoe is not down-turned, so it's a great shoe for beginner or mid-level climbers to climb with a variety of styles. |
Question: | Why does the size chart differ from other sources |
Answer: | La Sportiva shoes generally use the euro sizing chart and tend to run big. I would suggest going down a full size from other climbing shoes on the market. I normally wear 8 to 8.5 in other climbing shoes but La Sportiva I wear 7 to 7.5. You can always buy several pairs and return the ones that don't fit. I hope this info helps you with making a buying decision. |
Question: | I wear size 8 u.s. should i get the same size in rock climbing shoes? or one size bigger? or half size smaller |
Answer: | Hi There, Climbing shoes are designed to fit tight, almost like a second skin. If you are new to climbing, a comfortable fit is most important. I would recommend going a half size down from your street shoe. In all honesty, I would order a couple of different sizes and return the ones that do not fit. You are looking for a very snug fit that does not hurt your foot. Please be aware that these shoes will stretch around a half of a size over time, so remember to size accordingly. I hope this helps! |

The Peak of Comfort & Versatility
The TarantuLace is an unlined leather climbing shoe with asymmetric shape for advanced performance. The shape is great for upper end performance without hurting your toes. The synthetic leather lacing harness adds great support for entry to mid level climbers and the unlined leather is comfortable and soft. The aggressive rubber heel rand lets you stand in micro edges and the FriXion RS rubber is hard wearing yet sticky. This is great shoe for climbers that need a one-quiver shoe to do it all.
Product description
The starting point in our climbing career is of fundamental importance. It gives rise to the genetic building blocks that shape our climbing lives. The origin offers a lush leather upper, giving a feeling of a padded luxury that is rarely found in a shoe aimed at encouraging people to start climbing. The flat profile and relatively relaxed randing ease the climber's feet into a cocoon of comfort. The hook-and-loop closure keeps the foot snug and well positioned during use. The origin introduces scarpa's vision rubber, a proprietary compound that is both sticky and resilient to all the conditions that new climbers feet will experience.
Innovation and tradition share equally deep roots at SCARPA, a muti-generational, family-owned business whose headquarters and manufacturing facilities are in the same region of northern Italy where it was founded in 1938. SCARPA builds performance footwear for climbing, hiking, skiing, mountaineering, trail-running and other outdoor pursuits. Aside from being the Italian word for "shoe," SCARPA is an acronym for Societa Calzaturiera Asolana Riunita Pedemontana Anonima (Associated Shoe Manufacturing Company of the Asolo Mountain Area).

User questions & answers
Question: | im a size 37 in la sportiva skwama. what size should i get for these? thanks |
Answer: | If you wear a size 37 in the La Sportive climbing shoe, then the recommendation is to go with the size 37 for a Scarpa climbing shoe. |
Question: | how do these stretch out over time |
Answer: | Not well unless you wear them in the shower to stretch them but you do risk busting the stitching |
Question: | Hi. i'm a beginner at rock climbing. i'm size 37 and i bought 37 for this pair of shoes. but, my toes hurt like hell. should i order half size up |
Answer: | I'm a beginner also, so you may want to take this with a grain of salt. I'd go up a size leaning towards comfort. If mine hurt that much they may hold me back by not wanting to put them on. Mine started very tight and after a dozen sessions are stretched and are super comfortable now. Have a good one :) |
Question: | wear a size 11 what size should I get ? do they run small of big |
Answer: | Hard to say. If you wear a size 11 regular shoe. Prob go a half to a full size smaller on a climbing shoe. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What size correlates with the eur 38? bought the men's endeavor 5 (eur 37) and super tight, returning, have women's size 6 us feet |
Answer: | The sizing is tough, sent back 2 pairs. In the end, my daughter is a US 8.5 in a street shoe and she was a 41 in their sizing. Hope this info helps! |
Question: | What's the difference between narrow and tight fit? and which size do we follow.. there are two us sizes in these shoes. thanks |
Answer: | I am a total novice - so please take everything with a grain of salt. My understanding is that these are the narrower version of the women's style of Endeavor. The red ones are a little wider. I wear a regular width 7.5 in women's athletic street shoe. The red ones were a little too wide for me since when I tightened them up, the Velcro came past the bottom of the shoe. I am wearing a 9 in this purple style and even that squishes my toes. The climbers seem to think that a "tight fit" gives you better control. The best I can tell, that means that the shoe is so tight that it is uncomfortable to wear and smashes your toes. "Comfort fit" seems to mean that you don't have to immediately rip them off of your feet when you finish a wall at the gym. :-) Good luck - have fun and be safe climbing! |
Question: | Is this a neutral or moderate shoe |
Answer: | Hi There, The Burtora Endeavor would be a slightly cambered/moderate shoe! All the best, |
Question: | Are these women's or men's sizes? The size option shows (M) but this is a women's shoe |
Answer: | From their website "Endeavor comes in four different colors (each color is width and sex specific). Endeavor Moss is men’s wide. Endeavor Sierra Gold is men’s narrow. Endeavor Crimson is women’s wide. Endeavor Violet is women’s narrow. Size the same as your street shoe size for a performance fit, or a 1/2 size up for a comfortable all day fit". I bought the men's narrow (even though I'm a woman, liked the color and fit is excellent. I love these shoes!!) |

Question: | I live in Canada. My husband can't find size 15 shoes up here. Can you ship to canada |
Answer: | Hi There, unfortunately we as a seller do not ship to Canada. I would suggest using a US address if you know someone who lives down here. |
Question: | Hi, can i wash them in washing mashine? If not is there any alternative to washing mashine |
Answer: | You can do anything you want, but I do not recommend washing in with laundry because the hot water will ruin your the leather and glue. Spot clean only by wiping it down and inside. |
Question: | i'm a size 9.5-10 women's street shoe, what size of this climbing shoe should i look at |
Answer: | Go with what ever snow boot/rain boot site you would wear. |
Question: | i wear in between 9 -9.5 in street shoes, what size should i get |
Answer: | Here is my most honest answer to you. Go and visit your local climbing store or REI. Even if it seems tight, make sure your feet fits in it with your toes lightly curled, and heel doesn't moves. Here is my experience (guy size), my street shoe size is 8, I started with a 9 for comfort (because I didn't know any better), and eventually went with a size 8 Drifter. Remember, every shoe model and brand is different, so highly recommend you sample at a store. Example, my La Sportiva Tarantula is 7.5. I can't give you a direct but I think you'll get an idea as to where to start. |
Product features
Drifter
Don't let this shoe's looks fool you. Having climbed grades up to V15, the Drifter proves an astonishingly great value. By steering clear of some of Mad Rock's more technical features, this wallet friendly classic puts competition on it's wake.

User questions & answers
Question: | Looking for a strongman truck pulling shoe I saw other competitors but never tried, would these shoes give me extra grip for a truck pull event |
Answer: | they definitely will give you great traction, however they aren't really made for walking around on the ground |
Question: | I've been seeing different size-up suggestions between .5 to 2 sizes up. I know they should be tight. What size should I get |
Answer: | I got 1/2 smaller than my street show size. When you put it on, it should be almost unbearable to walk but the shoe will expand over time. Now it's the perfect comfort size after 10+ hours of use. |
Question: | I wear 6.5 womens size. What size should I buy this men' size shoes |
Answer: | If 6.5 is your street size, 5 or 5.5 depending if you want an extra snug fit. It would be wise to get the female shoes in a half size down for the sake of simplicity. Cheers! |
Question: | I dont understand what the D stands for in the sizes... I wear a women's 7.5 - what size should I buy |
Answer: | I think D is average and M is medium. If you typically wear medium on other shoes, then I would go with your regular shoe size. A lot of climbing shoes are sized erratically but I found these ones to be to represent my own size (I got half a size larger than normal and they are comfortable and get the job done, but I would have liked them to be more snug almost a little uncomfortable to give more confidence on the rock) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Looking to buy a shoe for my girlfriend and she wears a size 5 in kids for her converse. Would a size 6 or 6.5 climbing shoe fit her |
Answer: | These run a size small. My son is a 10, in men's shoes/sneakers, but wears an 11 in these. |
Question: | Would these shoes be good to climb a 8 ft wooden wall for law enforcement qualifications |
Answer: | You could probably climb the wall better but you wouldn’t want to do anything else in them. Climbing shoes are great for climbing but little else. I would recommend a climbing approach shoe that has sticky rubber but you can still walk around in. |
Question: | what is the life span of these climbing shoes |
Answer: | Depends on homuch you are going to be wearing them if you are going to the gym or out in the open. And if you are an entry level climber or a more advanced climber |
Question: | im new to this sport, im imm a size 11 us in lets say adidas, what size should i go for in rockclimbing shoes |
Answer: | If that’s you’re street shoe. I’d say get these about a half size smaller cause they do stretch quite a bit once they are worn in. I wish I would of gone down a size cause I ended up progressing past the point of what these shoes could handle very quickly because they became so loose at my heel I lost confidence on foot holds. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are the bolts and T nuts the standard size |
Answer: | There are no hardwire connections for ethernet or antenna. There are three hard-wired connections, one is for external supplied power, one is a mini USB (old style) and the other is a round jack labeled AV. I have not used any of these hard-wired connections. I live in the woods and monitor my property with one of these for wildlife both two-legged and four-legged and four-wheeled. What makes it nice is that with the controller you can pull up close to the camera, turn on wifi, connect to camera with phone or tablet and look at the videos and pictures. Makes it nice if it's raining or cold or maybe you've installed it higher up looking down or over something you don't have to climb the tree to get the memory card to view the pictures. This function works great and that's how I use it. The range for the Wi-Fi is maybe 40 to 50 Feet max. It is a sealed unit designed to be installed outside. |
Question: | Are these gray or brightly colored? It says both |
Answer: | Thank you for your question. In order to power this model, you would need the AC Power Adapter Model# PW-3655. |
Question: | How long are the 3/8 - 16 socket head capscrews |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | What is the recommended plywood thickness for the included bolts |
Answer: | Thank you for your question. You would set this to your Home and then your other J or G remote cameras to Remote and then they would link to this camera (if within CuddeLink range) and then the Power House Cell would then email images from all cameras in the network. This particular model cannot be a Remote though. |

Question: | Weight of shoe |
Answer: | Olive Your Heart is free of leather. |
Question: | How light are they? I also will use these for online karate classes in my garage due to the pandemic. So I need light shoes |
Answer: | The website for this company (gypsyfarms.com) has a lot of specific information about the oil's antioxidant and polyphenols. They mention hydroxytyrosol, but don't give an exact number. They give numbers for other polyphenols and antioxidants, but not that one, that i could find on their site. |
Question: | Where can I buy nice brand sneakers? Is the price cheap |
Answer: | Your Question makes no sense. This bottle comes with the same size natural wood cork that most olive oil come with. It does not come with a pour "spout". Yes, It would fit a normal olive oil pour spout, if you wish to use one. |
Question: | Are these comfortable enough for daily wear, or only for running in |
Answer: | At the seal, there is a lot number that corresponds to the date of harvest. With that lot number you can go to website and find the harvest date. At time I bought (jan. '20), my bottle was from an early 2019 harvest of late winter. This is an excellent olive oil. |
