There are a few key things to take care of plated jewelry. Never get it wet! If you do, wipe it off immediately. Wipe your ring at least a couple of times a week to remove skin oils. Just use a soft cloth. Never use jewelry cleaner on plated jewelry. The chemicals wear it off. Keep it stored in a box, pouch or something to keep it from getting scratched. If it's truly sterling silver, under the plating, you may notice a silver wearing through over time. The gold plating will not last forever. If you do all of this, you can probably get a couple of years out of it though, unless you have very acidic skin.
