Answer:	No...the ribs are are coated and black. My only issue with this beautiful unbrella is that is is heavier than I thought it was going to be.

Fair skinned people can get sunburned on a cloudy day. If the product was effective vs. ultraviolet, they would certainly advertise that bonus.

Answer:	The umbrella closes easily by pushing the button with a thumb, but it is a little trickier to get the shaft to telescope back into its closed position. I find that if I turn the umbrella upside down and gently push down on the floor it snaps back into place much more easily. It's also a little tricky to wind the velcro fastener around the closed umbrella when it's new, and I didn't bother storing it back in the pouch it came in, as that seemed nearly impossible for me. That being said, I still love the umbrella, and it makes me smile each time I use it.

Answer:	Closed measurement is 11 inches long. Open diameter is 40" at the "petal tips," 36" between. I think it should work okay for an 8 year old. I love the button that also CLOSES the umbrella, tho the button does have to be pushed pretty hard.
