They like any backpack give out after normal daily wear and tear of carrying heavy books, constant use to get pens/pencils etc. They held up for three years before we needed to use the warranty. We contacted the manufacturer directly and were sent replacement backpacks with minimal difficulty. I had to take pictures of the damage, find my old amazon reciept and then show that I had destroyed the backpack to get a replacement. I needed new backpacks due to kids wanting to change the style of the back pack. I immediately reordered High Sierra because of this experience.

Answer:	I'm not sure it would do well in a machine with the leather-like components, but you could certainly spot clean. I haven't needed to do either yet. Very durable bag, though. So, perhaps in a gentle/delicate cycle, it could run through a machine without issue. Nice bag, plenty of room, thick sturdy canvas. I like it.
