Answer:	You could use a leather puncher (like for belts) and try to add holes on each side. I am not in touch anylonger with the person who received it as a gift, so I can't ask her.

Answer:	You can but it does not fully detach, I had to tuck it in the front and it feels kinda strange and bulky
