| Answer: | You need a wax ring. The old wax ring needs to be cleared away from the flange on the floor. You can use a putty knife or scrap cardboard to clear out the old wax ring. The old bolts holding the toilet down will likely be corroded. These are typically called Johnny Bolts. You SHOULD get new Johnny Bolts. The old water supply line (or hose) is very likely worn from water running through it over the years. And the mating areas will no longer create a good seal at the ends you connect to the wall and to the tank. You should purchase a NEW supply line. Take care to get a supply line for a COMMODE, NOT one for a LAV SINK. They are slightly different. The height of the bottom of the tank, and the exact position of the connector may not be identical between the OLD and NEW commodes. If you want to be SURE that the new supply line is long enough, get one that is braided, and long enough to create a service loop. The size of the service loop will automatically adjust to give you the right length connection. And, the service loop makes installation easier. The last thing you'll need is something to seal around the base of the bowl to the floor around the outside edge. If you don't do this, spilled THINGS will weep up into the somewhat porous ceramic of the bowl and will be difficult to control the SMELL in the future. You can use caulking for this or silicone caulking or I have most recently installed one using the same grout I used on the floor tile. The grout is nice because the bowl is firmly fixed in place now - won't move as you sit down on it. Take care to get a bowl height that suits your personal needs. I have intentionally used lower bowl height in hall bath when the boys were young and standing up to urinate :) Later on, I got a higher bowl that is more comfortable for me because I am about 6 foot tall. Higher bowl heights may be uncomfortable unless you're tall - and depending what else was above the OLD toilet in the past - like a mirror or a counter top - may interfere with a higher height toilet. |
