With the short USB charging cable (built in) and the short lightning cable and an old iPhone SE, it's a tight fit. The other cable I use with my Anker powerbrick in my pocket while I am walking. In that application it's easy to find a cable position that allows the phone and the brick to be back-to-back. I do think you'll be able to "train" it to sit where you want. A foot long would probably be ideal.
