The newest installment of this popular series features some unusual repertoire as well as documents of the New York Metropolitan Opera in its postwar heyday. Columbias 1960 recording of Bartoks Bluebeards Castle features American singers. Though it is sung in English, its authentic Hungarian quality is guaranteed by the conductor, Budapest-born Eugene Ormandy. Rosalind Elias makes a splendidly passionate Judith. The Philadelphia Orchestra comes into its own at the opening of the various doors especially the Second, where the dazzling brilliance of Bluebeards treasure-chamber is vividly depicted (Gramophone).

Following highly acclaimed, award-winning recordings of Handel's Rodelinda and Floridante and Vivaldi's Motezuma, Alan Curtis and his Il Complesso Barocco bring another neglected Baroque jewel to life. Alan Curtis, the pioneer of Baroque opera revivals and three-time winner of the German Record Critics Prize, works his magic on Handel's Tolomeo. Written in 1728, Tolomeo is a gripping story of revenge, lust, lost love and eventual reconciliation. It was the final opera created by Handel for the Royal Academy of Music in London, where it was premiered with a sensational cast led by one of the most famous singers of the day, the castrato Senesino. In this recording, Curtis and Il Complesso Barocco are joined by some of today's leading Handel singers headed by Ann Hallenberg as Tolomeo and also featuring Karina Gauvin, Anna Bonitatibus, Romina Basso and Pietro Spagnoli.

Tolomeo is another rarely performed Handel opera that proves precisely what a great dramatist he was. Despite some plot confusions – characters are disguised throughout - there are scenes of startling melodrama: when Tolomeo is forced to commit suicide or betray his wife, Seleuce, our emotions are torn in one direction; only later does it become clear that the poison he’s taken was swapped for a sleeping potion by Elisa, the sister of King Araspe (Tolomeo’s enemy), who is in love with Tolomeo (though she does not know his true identity). Seleuce is as pure and lovely as the woodsy, shipwrecked setting, and her music is pastoral and lyrical – one aria has her backed by intertwining recorders. Alan Curtis leads the period instrument band Il Complesso Barocco in a performance that brings out all the passion in this tale of lust, love and grief, with Anne Hallenberg fearless in the title role (it was written for the famous castrato, Senesino) and Karina Gauvin simply ravishing as Seleuce. Pietro Spagnoli, as the tyrant Araspe uses his dark voice in a nice, bullying fashion and Anna Bonitatibus’ Elisa is wonderfully wild and strong. This is a knockout performance of an opera that should be better known. -- Robert Levine
