Introduction

Unless you’re among the small but enthusiastic group of “motorheads” who collect, troubleshoot, and restore vintage lawn mowers, chain saws, garden tractors, snowblowers, or old outboard motors as a hobby, you probably opened this book because some small engine in your life just isn’t running right. Maybe it’s hard to start or sometimes doesn’t start at all. Perhaps your small engine runs, butsounds strange; like it’s got real problems somewhere deep down inside. Quite possibly you’re wishing you had the mechanical equivalent of a “green thumb” so you could save money on small-engine repairs. With most power equipment shops charging hourly repair rates comparable to those of a luxury car dealership’s service department, it is no wonder why many folks who don’t consider themselves particularly handy get so darn frustrated by their persnickety weed-whacker or messed-up mower that they feel there’s no alternative but to buy a new one.

THINGS THAT MAKE A SMALL ENGINE RUN

The biggest difference between small gasoline engines and other types of fuel burning motors is their small capacity and simplicity of design. Small engines generate modest amounts of power—generally 2 to 25 horsepower—compared to a typical family car boasting 150 or more horses. And a small engine’s compact size also makes it easier to maintain and repair.

DIAGNOSING & TROUBLESHOOTING

Troubleshooting always begins with diagnosis. In this chapter, you’ll find lists of common problems followed by questions and then potential answers, along with references to the appropriate section in the book where the potential solution is discussed in detail and the steps for making the necessary repair are shown. It’s not always an exact science, but it is the basic procedure for fixing just about anything. And if all else fails, have you tried rebooting?

EASY BUT IMPORTANT MAINTENANCE

You often hear people lament that we now live in such a throwaway society. There is, of course, much truth in this complaint. Whether it is an electronic device or a pair of shoes, the trouble and cost of repairing a problem very frequently exceeds the cost of replacing them. And in many cases, access to the moving parts is practically impossible with little prospect of ever getting the thing put back together. However, tools and appliances that run on small gas engines can usually be kept out of the landfills and recycling centers for years, or decades, simply by following a simple maintenance program, and perhaps making some occasional repairs when they are called for. Eventually their day will come, of course, or your needs may change, or perhaps you’ll simply succumb to the appeal of a shiny new lawn tractor or the latest snowblower. But in the meantime, follow the easy but important maintenance tips in this chapter and you will greatly extend the lifespan of your gas-powered too.

BASIC ENGINE REPAIRS

Many of the most common small-engine repairs are actually quite easy to accomplish provided you know what you are doing and get the right parts. A “basic” repair often comes down to making a simple adjustment or cleaning a part. The primary components of the fuel system are mostly easy to diagnose and adjust or re-adjust. These include the fuel tank, fuel filter, and fuel pump. The exhaust system also avails itself to fairly simple repairs, such as swapping out a muffler. Other repairs covered in this “basic” chapter get a little more complex, such as servicing a carburetor or replacing a rewind. But, again, with patience and good information (and the right parts) they are very manageable, even for a weekend DIYer with little mechanical experience.

ADVANCED REPAIRS

The systems and techniques in this section are more complex than those described in the Basic Repair section, but they’re well within your reach now that you have some primary repair projects in your repertoire, as the same basic principles apply. If an advanced repair task is new to you, start by reviewing “Trouble-shooting” (pages 36 to 41) and “Safety” (pages 32 to 33).

2-STROKE POWER EQUIPMENT

In a 2-stroke engine, the piston acts as a valve, exposing the intake and exhaust ports at designated moments in the cycle. Two-stroke engines are still widely used for chain saws, leaf blowers, and other hand held equipment. They are also common for outboard motors and motocross motorcycles. They are no longer used on street bikes in many countries because of older 2-stroke engines’ higher emissions. Two-stroke engines have long been preferred for hand-held equipment because of their lightweight design. However, the latest technology has reduced the weight of 4-stroke engine components, creating the potential for inroads in the hand-held equipment industry.

Meatballs with Pumpkin & Spice Butter from Istanbul and Beyond

For this warming dish from Hakkâri, delicate lamb or beef meatballs studded with ground rice are laid atop a bed of pumpkin chunks and then steam-simmered in a light tomato sauce. Before serving, the dish is drizzled with sizzling tomato butter seasoned with purple basil and red pepper flakes, which play off the richness of the meat and the sweetness of the pumpkin. I ate this dish at the home of Șehmur and Baran Kurt, in Hakkâri.

A good meatball is light and tender, attributes achieved in Turkey by hand-chopping the meat, something even I am unwilling to undertake on a regular basis. But you can achieve a similar texture by spreading ground meat on a cutting board, sprinkling the seasonings over it, and cutting everything together with a knife. (This keeps the meat from turning into a paste, as it would if you mixed the ingredients in a food processor or by squeezing and kneading with your hands.) The process takes only about 5 minutes. Combine this technique with very light handling when you form the meatballs, and they’ll end up tender.

You must soak the rice for 1½ hours before proceeding with the rest of the recipe, during which time you can peel, seed, and slice the pumpkin and complete other prep work. The meatball mixture can be prepared ahead of time and kept in the refrigerator. Serve the dish with a simple cooked vegetable like spinach and plain Strained Yogurt. For a dinner party, give your guests an appetite-rousing preview by placing the pot in the middle of the table before pouring over the sizzling spice butter.

Directions

1. For the meatballs: Place the rice in a medium bowl and add water to cover, swish the rice with your fingers, and then drain off the water. Repeat until the water runs clear, then cover the rice with room temperature water and set aside for 1½ hours.

2. Drain the rice briefly, then process, blend, or grind (in a mortar) into pieces the size of coarse sand or kosher salt.

3. Spread the ground lamb or beef over a large cutting board, forming a rectangle about ¼ inch thick. Scatter the ground rice and onion evenly over the meat, then sprinkle over the black pepper, salt, ground chile, and purple basil (or basil and ground anise). With a large chef ’s knife, work your way horizontally across the meat, rocking the knife and cutting into the ingredients. Turn the cutting board 90 degrees and repeat, again cutting across the meat. Slip the blade of your knife underneath one side of the meat and bring about half of the rectangle up and over the center. Repeat from the opposite side of the meat, and then from the top and bottom. You should now have a small squareish lump of ground meat. Pat out the meat and repeat the cutting two or three times, until the ingredients are completely mixed into the meat. Gently transfer the meat to a medium bowl.

4. Put the pumpkin or winter squash in a heavy lidded pot large enough to accommodate it in one or two layers. Sprinkle the salt over the pumpkin.

5. Place a bowl of water within reach. With wet palms and a very light touch, pinch off tablespoon-sized pieces of the meat mixture, roll them into balls, and lay them on top of the pumpkin pieces; make a second layer if necessary. Handle the meat lightly—don’t squeeze or press it when you’re forming the meatballs, which needn’t be perfectly smooth or round. You should end up with about 26 meatballs.

6. Stir together the tomato paste and boiling water and pour over the meatballs and pumpkin. Place the pot over high heat and bring the liquid to a boil, then cover, reduce the heat to a slow simmer, and cook until the pumpkin or squash is soft and the meatballs are cooked through, 25 to 35 minutes, depending on the type of squash. There should be a small amount of sauce at the bottom of the pot; check after 15 minutes, and if there is not sufficient liquid in the bottom of the pot, add ¼ cup water. Remove from the heat and set aside, covered, while you prepare the spice butter.

7. Make the spice butter: Melt the butter in a small skillet over medium-low heat. When the butter begins to bubble, add the red pepper flakes and purple basil (or basil and ground anise). Swirl or stir the mixture as it sizzles for about 2 minutes, until the spices are very fragrant and darkening but not burning. Pull the skillet from the heat, pour the butter over the meatballs and pumpkin, and serve immediately.

Take 3 tablespoons of the lukewarm water and place in a cup with the yeast and sugar. Stir well and set aside for 5 minutes.

Place the flour and salt in a large bowl. Make a well in the center, then pour in the yeast mixture, the remaining lukewarm water, and the oil.

Use your hands to mix the dough together. It will be very wet to begin with but, as you continue, the consistency will change. Knead for 5 minutes, then let it rest for 10 minutes. Finally, knead it again for 10 to 15 minutes until smooth and elastic. To tell your dough is ready, give it a firm poke. If the indentation you make fills quickly, it’s done. If the dent stays, continue kneading. Or do the “windowpane test”: take a small piece of dough and stretch it so you get a thin, almost translucent square (like a windowpane). If you can stretch the dough thin without it breaking, it’s ready. If not, knead for a few more minutes.

Brush a large bowl with oil, place in the ball of dough, and turn to lightly coat. Cover with plastic wrap or a damp towel and set in a warm place for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until doubled in size.

Turn it onto a lightly floured surface and cut it in half. Tear off 2 large sheets of parchment paper then, with floured hands, stretch each piece of dough into a large oval on each sheet.

Aim for each to measure about 13 x 6 1/2 inches and 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. Cover with damp towels and set aside for 30 minutes in a warm place to rise. Preheat the oven to 425°F and place 2 baking sheets or pizza stones inside to warm up.

Brush the loaves with egg & olive oil mixture then make indentations with your fingers. Sprinkle with the nigella seeds. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, until golden.

User questions & answers

Question: Are the listed measurements (22.75" tall x 16.5" wide) the size of the actual weaving surface or does that include the feet
Answer: The actual weaving surface is 20.25" tall x 13.5" wide
Question: would a 4 year-old be able to use this? I don't see an age on it
Answer: My 5 1/2-year-old could do it like a breeze. I had to tie the knots when we took the project off, but she wove for an hour straight without any help. Depends on the kid, but I disagree with those that say that a 4-year-old wouldn't have the skill to do it. Once they get the rhythm of the weaving, it's easy.
Question: how do i remove my finished project. i lost my instruction book
Answer: Depends on how you are going to use it, here's a link to the pdf of the instruction book. http://mediacdn.shopatron.com/media/mfg/677/media_document/dev_1/9381_Multi-CraftWeavingLoom_Instructions.pdf?1408066549
Question: Does it need adult assistance, Granddaughter is 7 yr. old
Answer: I got one for my granddaughter who is 7 yr. old also and she needed a little assistance getting started but was able to weave without any problem.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the warp bar fixed or moveable? If it's fixed, how do you weave around to the warps on the back
Answer: Warp bar is movable. You advance the warp by pulling on the warp bar- gives you continuous warp.
Question: can you make long projects since I am new to weaving I am making rugs about 25 or more wide and about 40 inches long
Answer: For my preferences, I would not use this loom. There are other looms that I feel are better suited for rug making.
Question: Is this a lap loom, or do you need to buy a stand for it also? Also, does it come with the tools to actually tapestry weave
Answer: It can be used by propping it against a wall, table edge, or some other form of support. It does not come with tools, but you don't really need much to weave tapestry. May I suggest "Tapestry Weaving, A Comprehensive Study Guide" by Nancy Harvey, or "Tapestry Weaving" by Kirsten Glasbrook as useful resources. Both show you how to make what are called "butterflies", yarn bundles used for passing the weft through the warp. An old fork or a hair pick can work nicely as a beater until you decide whether to invest in further tools.
Question: Could this be used as a simple warp weighted loom
Answer: I have a degree and textile design and 25 years in the business as a upholstery fabrics Designer. In all that time I have never heard the expression “simple warp waited loom” If you mean, can it be used as a one harness loom, the answer is yes. It is designed to do just that. As a tapestry loom, it has the capability of weaving gobelin and other simple tapestry weaves. It also has the capability to be a four harness loom. It can do twills and baskets. That is what the four dowels are for. It is not a rigid, string or wire harness loom though.
Question: Does the loom come with the carrying bag
Answer: Unfortunately, no. The carrying bag must be purchased separately.
Question: Is this model compatible for adding a second heddle
Answer: Yes it is. You will need to purchase a second set of heddle blocks to support the second heddle. I personally have 3 heddles for both my 16" and 32" Harp looms.......You will love it. It's the most versatile rigid heddle loom out there. Personally, if you are going to buy both the loom and heddles and blocks all at the same time I would order them from a place like the Woolery.com where you will get free shipping and have everything delivered at the same time.
Question: Is this the most recent model with the metal ratchets and pawls
Answer: Yes, this is the Kromski Harp Forte- the most recent model with the metal magnetic ratchets and pawls.
Question: Does this have the newer method of stringing the back beam with a continuous string, instead of the older, separate loops
Answer: I'm not familiar with the separate loops. But you put pegs in the back side and then you make your warp by wrapping around the pegs. The pegs are included. Hope that helps
