8 best laying hens

Laying hens are domesticated chickens that are primarily raised for the purpose of producing eggs. They are a common feature in many households and farms around the world, and caring for them can be a rewarding and educational experience. Here is some information about laying hens related to pets, animal care, crafts, hobbies, home, and books:

  1. Housing: Laying hens require a suitable coop or housing arrangement. Coops should be secure to protect the hens from predators and provide adequate ventilation. Nesting boxes should also be provided for the hens to lay their eggs.

  2. Feeding: Laying hens need a balanced diet to produce high-quality eggs. Commercial poultry feed is available and designed specifically for layers. Additionally, they can be given supplemental treats like grains, fruits, and vegetables.

  3. Water: Access to clean and fresh water is essential for hens. They should have constant access to water to stay healthy and hydrated.

  4. Egg Production: Laying hens are bred for their ability to produce eggs consistently. Depending on the breed, they can lay between 200 and 300 eggs per year. Egg production may decrease as hens age.

  5. Egg Collection: Eggs should be collected daily to prevent them from getting dirty or cracked. This also encourages hens to continue laying in their nesting boxes.

  6. Health Care: Regular health checks and vaccinations are important to keep laying hens healthy. Common health issues include parasites, respiratory infections, and egg-laying problems.

  7. Breeds: There are many different chicken breeds suitable for egg production. Popular breeds include the White Leghorn, Rhode Island Red, and Sussex. Each breed has its own characteristics, such as egg color and temperament.

  8. Egg Quality: The quality of eggs produced by hens can vary. Factors like diet, genetics, and overall health play a role in determining the quality of eggs. Fresh, high-quality eggs have firm whites and vibrant yolks.

  9. Egg Uses: Eggs from laying hens can be used in a variety of dishes, including baking, cooking, and as a source of protein. They can be used in crafts and hobbies, such as egg decorating during Easter.

  10. Books: There are numerous books and resources available on raising laying hens. These books cover topics like chicken breeds, coops, health care, and egg production. Some popular titles include "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens" by Gail Damerow and "The Small-Scale Poultry Flock" by Harvey Ussery.

Raising laying hens can be a fulfilling and enjoyable endeavor for those interested in pets, animal care, crafts, hobbies, and home-based activities. It provides a source of fresh eggs and the opportunity to learn about animal husbandry and sustainable living.

User questions & answers

Question: How many pounds can it hold
Answer: One piece a word and then the screws and bolts to help it stay in
Question: is this normal chicken feed
Answer: Hi, I have this for my juvenile male cockatiel. I'm not extremely familiar but I believe it may in part depend on whether it's an Indian or African ringneck. African are slight larger than a cockatiel while Indian are slightly smaller. It's a fair size, he can sit comfortably on it. I am fairly confident he will be able to as an adult, unles he becomes a giant lol. I'd recommend looking at pictures people have posted. I'm very happy with the perch if that helps.
Question: Can I feed this to both hen & rooster? Or is this only for egg laying hens
Answer: Yes, they are sturdy and colorful, and work well for my budgies, too.
Question: Is it my imagination or have the prices gone way up
Answer: Possibly yes , i have been told that these rough perches are bad for their feet though. I use these for my budgies and they don't mind them .

Q&A: Al l About Eggs

It’s important to store your eggs with the large end up, pointy end down. By doing this, your egg will stay fresher longer because less moisture will be lost since the air sac is located on the large end. If you’re storing hatching eggs, they must be stored with the large end up so the air sac stays in place.

How long do eggs stay good in the refrigerator?

Properly stored and refrigerated eggs rarely spoil. Over time, they will actually dry up. But with that said, a rule of thumb is that eggs can stay good up to 100 days in the refrigerator.

If I add a rooster to my flock, how long will it take for me to get fertilized eggs?

Technically it takes only two days before a hen will start laying fertilized eggs after being introduced to a rooster. Realistically, it may take your rooster some time to mate with each hen so a good rule of thumb is about a week after adding a rooster, you’ll have fertilized eggs.

Chapter 6: Predators - What's Out There?

The first step in dealing with predators is to know what you might face. Predators can be broken down into three groups: flying predators, ground-dwelling predators, and domestic predators. While there are predators that are pretty much universal throughout the United States, there are also regional predators. If you’re not familiar with your wildlife, it’s a good idea to talk with local chicken keepers or your extension agency to determine the biggest threats near your home. Then get to know more about those animals and their habits. Once you’re armed with this information, you can work smarter, not harder, to be effective in your protection efforts.

Product description

Purina Layena Crumbles Premium Layer Feed is formulated with the optimum nutrition for healthy birds and nutritious eggs. This feed is a 16%-protein, high-calcium ration formulated with prebiotics, probiotics and yeast for top-producing laying hens once they reach 18 weeks of age. Purina Layena includes our Oyster Strong System for strong shells. Oyster shell provides another source of calcium when the hens need it most. Oyster shell is a larger particle size than limestone. This means that oyster shell will stay in the digestive tract longer and will provide a source of calcium for eggshell production over a longer period of time than smaller particle sources of calcium. This is especially important at night when egg shell formation is rapidly occurring and dietary sources of calcium are limited because the bird is not eating.

  • Rich yellow yolks - A high level of xanthophyll, a coloring agent derived from marigolds, produces deep yellow egg yolks
  • Calcium Manganese and Trace Minerals - For strong shells
  • Essential Amino Acids - Enhanced with lysine and methionine to give birds the nutrients they need to produce plenty of wholesome and delicious eggs; Also promotes beautiful feathering
  • Key Levels of Vitamin A, D, E - Strong reproduction and overall health, with a high level of Vitamin A to help birds grow into healthy adult birds
  • Prebiotics, Probiotics and Yeast - Supports immune and digestive health

User questions & answers

Question: WHAT are the ingredients
Answer: Hi, The Booda perch (32 inch) is close to an 1 inch in diameter. The 21 inch perch is also close to an 1 inch in diameter and when you remove the caps on the end to screw the perch onto the cage, there is an attached 3/4 inch plastic screw piece with a slot that the cage bar goes into and then you screw on the 1 inch cap over the top of plastic piece so you can get a nice tight fit so perch doesnt slide down cage bars. I have 2 of the 32 inch perches and one 21 inch for the travel cage. The perches bend because of the wire deep inside the rope so you can move it where it needs to go in order to fit. Very sturdy.

User questions & answers

Question: what color hat does it come with. Hope it comes with the green hat
Answer: Way up!!
Question: Can I see a you tube video
Answer: I purchased the medium 32 inch rope. However there are different sizes and lengths to choose from. My African congo grey absolutely loves his rope. I have purchased 3 and will purchase more. Hope this helps. Best of luck
Question: Do the eggs open up, so you could fill it with candy
Answer: yes you could wash these. Soak in the sink and rinse off. I wouldn't uses soap because birds like to chew on them and you don't want them chewing on soap. They would need to be totally dried out before putting in the back in the cage so the feet arent standing on a wet perch. Honestly mine never get dirty. My parrots love to chew them apart like a toy and I'm ok with that as it satisfies their shreading/nesting so they aren't feather pluckers.
Question: How many eggs does it come with
Answer: The diameter of large rope is one inch. Yes, will work for huge macaw. There were 3 macaws at the home where I got my African Grey and they used these perches but some of the birds were pulling on some of the strands so they had a toy and perch in one.
