14 best sergers

A serger, also known as an overlock machine, is a specialized sewing machine commonly used in crafts, hobbies, and home sewing projects. Sergers are primarily designed to finish the edges of fabric and create clean, professional-looking seams. They offer several key features and functions that make them a valuable tool for sewers and craft enthusiasts:

  1. Edging and Seam Finishing: Sergers are renowned for their ability to trim fabric edges and encase them with a series of stitches to prevent fraying. This results in a clean, neat finish that adds durability to the fabric.

  2. Seam Stitching: Sergers can sew various types of stitches, including overlock, flatlock, and rolled hem stitches. These stitches are ideal for joining fabric pieces together with strong, stretchable seams.

  3. Differential Feed: Sergers have a differential feed mechanism that allows you to control the speed of the front and back feed dogs independently. This feature is particularly useful when working with stretchy or lightweight fabrics, as it helps prevent fabric puckering or stretching.

  4. Multiple Threads: Sergers typically use multiple threads (commonly 2, 3, or 4) to create secure and decorative seams. The most common serger types are 3-thread and 4-thread machines, each offering different stitch options.

  5. Rolled Hems: Sergers excel at creating rolled hems, which are narrow, neatly rolled edges commonly used for finishing hems on garments and lightweight fabrics.

  6. Decorative Stitching: Some sergers have built-in capabilities for creating decorative stitches, adding flair to your sewing projects.

  7. Speed and Efficiency: Sergers are known for their speed and efficiency in finishing seams, making them a time-saving tool for sewing enthusiasts.

  8. Tension Control: Sergers offer adjustable tension settings for each thread, allowing you to fine-tune your stitches for different fabric types and sewing techniques.

  9. Knife Blade: Sergers are equipped with a sharp knife blade that trims excess fabric as you sew, ensuring a neat edge.

  10. Threading Challenges: While sergers offer many benefits, they can be a bit more challenging to thread and maintain than standard sewing machines due to the multiple threads and threading paths involved.

Sergers are commonly used for sewing clothing, sportswear, lingerie, and home décor items. They are especially popular among those who work with knits and stretch fabrics, as serged seams provide excellent elasticity and durability. Sergers come in various models and price ranges, catering to both beginners and experienced sewers. Learning to use a serger effectively can greatly enhance the quality and finish of your sewing projects in the crafts and hobbies domain.

User questions & answers

Question: use as a sewing machine
Answer: I know this is an old question and some of my answers are repeats, but if you are still using this machine and haven't come up with an answer maybe one of the following solutions from my own experience will help you. I love this machine and therefore completed an extensive search for answers to my questions which included: Brother Support (not that helpful), studying the manual carefully & repeatedly, asking sew 'n' vac store employees and lots of Google searches. Here, in no particular order, are advice/solutions that solved my gathering/bunching issue and many other issues. 1. PROPER UPPER THREADING: Regarding threading, let me advise that the thread will jump out of the correct lineup at times so if your stitch changes in a bad way, check that first. Also, I had to use a clip over a piece of foam on the last guide before the needle guide because it popped out constantly, regardless of checking, rechecking and having others check my threading. 2. PROPER BOBBIN THREADING: I am forgetful so actually check the manual each time I thread a bobbin. Improper bobbin threading will really mess you up. 3. CORRECT NEEDLE SIZE & TYPE for specific fabric--VERY IMPORTANT!! Some of this is trial and error. Not all needle/thread guidelines I found applied to my situation. I tried Schmetz--130/705, HaX1 of 15x1--the Brother manual states this as an alternative, but Organ HLX5 (not sold locally) is best. DO NOT use the Schmetz "UNIVERSAL" needles if you are working with a fabric that specifically requires sharp or ball point. The Universal has a slight ball point--not sharp not full ball point. Learned that the hard way. 4. CORRECT THREAD FOR SIZE OF NEEDLE, TYPE OF FABRIC AND EXPECTED END RESULT. (superiorthreads.com is an awesome resource for this and many other sewing, quilting, embroidery questions. They have tons of educational articles and you can email them and receive friendly, personalized assistance for your particular situation. This is not a conflict of interest because Superior does not sell sewing machines and the articles and email support are available even if you don't purchase Amazon does sell a very few Superior products but not many.) Before Superior, I had no idea how many variables were involved in sewing and learned more about thread than I ever wanted to know, but need to know. 5. TENSION--BOTH UPPER TENSION AND BOBBIN TENSION. This is the first machine I have owned that both could be adjusted. Check manual for what correct tension should look like and how to adjust (admittedly the manual is not extremely clear). Bobbin tension is tightened or loosened by a screw at the bottom of bobbin case, and upper thread tension is adjusted by the small knob on the left side midway down. This knob has numbers, but they are essentially useless (even Brother agrees). They are there just to show the concept of righty tighty, lefty loosey--again, trial and error. 6. The LARGE DIAL TO THE RIGHT adjusts the stitch length, NOT the Tension. 7. Always keep the top thread guide pulled to maximum height, and make sure thread is coming out from the correct direction. Thread stands can also help although I have not tried one. Amazon sells these, several kinds. 8. If you use cone spools or slippery thread, you can purchase netting that will keep it from sliding and bunching at the bottom. 9. I have not yet figured out the best setting for the FEED DOG in various situations, but I do adjust it often if feeding seems difficult so far staying mostly within the light green area. Bottom line, your problem could be caused by any, all or some of the above factors. Good luck if anyone finds this answer useful. I can add photos, I think, if needed. Pretty sure this is the longest question answer I have ever written so I am not going to re-read, sorry for any typos or excess rambling.
Question: I have never serged before, I need a very simple to thread machine. any suggestions for me
Answer: Throat space is the area to the right of the needle when seated at the machine. It is the open area between the needle and the vertical side of the machine that determines how much fabric might fit comfortably within that space when sewing on your project.
Question: My 8 thread Baby Lock recently broke and i am desperate to get a replacement. Will I be satisfied with the Brother 1034D? I have a Brother Inovis an
Answer: Yes, there are many feet, including a walking foot. If you want a 1/4 foot with an "edge" on it, you would have to purchase one from the sewing outlet.com ($15.99). I like to sew with the edged 1/4 inch foot. Otherwise, there are many presser feet, including the free motion foot. You can drop the feed dogs to free motion. This is a great quilting machine and has excellent "pin feed," which moves the fabric through like butter. First time threading took longer for me, but after that it was free sailing. If you want to make quilts faster like I do, this is a great machine. I used to quilt with my Bernina, but I like the Brother better. It is more affordable and well made. You should also know that if you use thicker threads (I always use 100% cotton from ConnectingThreads.com), that you will need an 80/12 needle instead of the smaller ones due to the way the machine's tension is set up. Hope this helps,Vivian from Wisconsin
Question: I am looking at a tee shirt hem. It has 2 top stiched straight lines and the underside has the loops. Will this machine do this
Answer: It measures 8 3/4 inches from needle to right side of machine. It is 6 1/2 inches high from base to top of opening.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I get a book for my serger a handbook
Answer: I have not yet tried this method, but, I saw a post from someone who has shared your issue. Here is the post:How to remove crystals with Goo Gone:Use a tissue. I tried cotton rounds, but cotton left fibers behind.Saturate the tissue. You'll use lots of Goo Gone for this.Dab the front and back. Dab at the crystal area from both the front of the fabric and the back of the fabric to loosen the crystal.Don't tug. The crystal will loosen eventually. Don't tug on it the rest of the way or you'll remove some of the silver paint on the back of the crystal. Be patient and keep dabbing at the bugger until it releases on its own. Then you can re-use the crystal (with E6000 as a glue; you can't hotfix it again).Hotfix comes off easily. Hotfix crystals came off the pillowcase the easiest, but the E600 wasn't too bad. The crystals came off, but left a little lump of glue on the lycra. I just peeled off the little lumps.Do a practice run. Glue some crystals to a scrap of lycra before using the Goo Gone on a dress. You can take my word that it doesn't stain, but I'd rather you didn't. Give it a shot for yourself and see if it works for you.Update: lighter fluid, the kind you put in a lighter and is sold alongside tobacco, not charcoal, is terrific at removing crystals, both hotfix and E6000. As always, test first!Hope this answers your question and Good Luck !
Question: Does this have a chain stitch? Thanks
Answer: It wouldn't hurt to try, but the package does not specify use for rubber.
Question: does this come with a waste basket
Answer: If you are gluing costume jewelry, E6000 is a great option. For fine jewelry, I really can't answer that. Thanks!
Question: Con este modelo puedo coser lenceria intima, bañadores, boxer, bralette y a las vez tambien jeans
Answer: Yes.

This serger works with either 3 or 4 threads for added flexibility. User questions & answers

Question: Im a beginner at sergering, which one: 1034d or st4031hd and why
Answer: A regular sewing machine would be so much better and easier! I also own a Brother SE 400 and LOVE It! I would choose it over the Brother 1034D Serger.
Question: Can you serge denim and vinyl
Answer: This serger is much easier to thread than others I have owned and used but it's not as simple as threading a regular sewing machine. You must thread in the correct order to be successful. Watch some of the YouTube videos that demonstrate threading this machine. Then what I did was place a sticker underneath each tension dial and with a Sharpie marker, I wrote 1, 2, 3 and 4 on the appropriate sticker. That way I can tell at a glance what order I need to thread in.
Question: Can this machine do rolled hems like on tulle and silky fabrics
Answer: Ouch. Hopefully, they have good customer support to help you. The 1034D will do what a 4-thread serger does and you won't be disappointed. But that's about it.
Question: What is the deferent between st4031hd and 2340cv
Answer: If you want that double line of stitching that covers the raw edge of your hem on the back of the work, you can use a regular sewing machine and a double needle. It is a stretchable stitch so you can use it on knits or wovens. Double needles come in a couple different widths and aren't very expensive--a lot cheaper than a cover stitch machine! The wrong side of the fabric will look somewhat like it's been zigzagged. You just use 2 spools of thread on top or a spool and a wound bobbin of the same color. That's why there are usually 2 thread pegs on your machine. Hold the 2 threads together & thread the machine as usual until you get to the last 2 thread guides, then separate them so they don't twist together near the needles.

User questions & answers

Question: Has anyone's clutch button gotten stuck in the up position? That's the button that switches your serger between coverstitch and overlock mode
Answer: Yes the same clutch problems happened so I bought another serger and keep this in cover stitch mode. [set by a technitian] Will sell as I never use it.
Question: Does this machine do heavy material
Answer: The Singer 14T968DC serger is a home serger. It can sew several layers of denim weight fabric, but may not be suitable for 4-5 layers of upholstery type fabric. This machine does not have presser foot pressure adjustment so too thick of fabric will raise the presser foot high enough to release the tensions.
Question: I have been using a brother 1034d. is this singer any harder to use than the brother
Answer: We only have information on Singer brand sewing machines; therefore we are unable to compare with a different brand. The Singer model 14T968DC comes with a CD Workbook, which shows you exactly how to use each stitch. There is also loads of additional support via instructional videos and a Customer Care line where our call center representatives will be happy to answer questions and help you to have a great sewing experience with the Singer model 14T968DC serger. The toll free Customer Service line number is 1-800-474-6437. We have expanded our hours to 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM CST, Monday to Friday. We now also have Saturday hours and are available from 8:00 AM till 2:00 PM CST.
Question: Can this machine do a good cover stitch
Answer: I know this is an old question but I hope it will help someone. I just tried this serger last night for the first time. The first stitch I did was the tripple coverstitch. It took me half an hour to thread it, but now that I have done it, I am sure it will take me less than 5 minutes next time. I am new to household sergers (used an industrial overlock over 20 years ago). Once I got it all set up, I was very pleased with the quality of the coverstitch. So far I don't regret buying this machine vs. high end brands.

Answer: The serger is about 10-7/8 front to back without the scrap catcher. It would be a very close fit. Not even close with the scrap catcher in place.
Question: does this machine have automatic tension
Answer: Very fast! Machine is comparable to a babylock evolution.
Question: Does this machine have a free arm to sew sleeve openings

Question: I work with heavy material (canvas). I'm concerned that this machine will handle the weight. I don't need the knife to cut the material, I do need to know that it will stitch properly. Thanks for the information
Answer: It comes with the basic presser foot. The other listing you see are for different packages that include different feet. This machine can take lots of different feet, but it only comes with one. We can create a package with more feet if you need them. Plus, using a serger will turn tricky projects with knit fabrics, into a breeze. This compact model will upgrade your sewing space, without sacrificing the valuable table space that a full sized serger might!

The value of differential feed adjustment – This dial will greatly help to minimize any puckering or stretching that could occur on other sergers with tricky fabrics. Two feed dogs are used in this system; one feeds the appropriate amount of fabric for the setting on the stitch length dial and the other pulls or pushed the fabric according to the ratio set on the differential feed dial. Puckered edges on woven fabrics are prevented by setting the differential feed dial between 0.5 and 1.0. Stretched edges on knit fabrics are prevented by setting the differential feed dial between 1.0 and 2.25.

User questions & answers

Question: I have a sewing table with a 11" front-to-back opening. Will this serger fit, with or without the scrap catcher
Answer: Both the 1034D and ST4031HD Sergers are excellent models to start with. The 1034D helps you achieve better stitch quality, for a more even, professional finish, even on very thin or stretchy fabrics. The reliable Brother 1634D serger is perfect for finishing, creating rolled hems, inserting zippers, stitching neat blind hems, and creating ruffles on both knits and woven fabrics.
Question: How fast does this sew
Answer: Yes, the ST4031HD can serge vinyl and denim.
Question: The additional feet are not included on other sites, I want to make sure that they are really included with this offer
Answer: The ST4031HD will perform a rolled hem.
Question: What feet come with this out of the box. I am a little confused because one company says none and another says it comes with multiple feet
Answer: The st4031hd is a serger for all types of fabric but includes heavy duty (hence, “hd”) fabric like denim. A typical serger is used to put 2 pieces of material together and cuts the excess fabric off for a clean professional look. The 2340cv is a cover stitch is a serger that provides a decorative topstitch in 2,3, or 4 colors like what you would find on ladies leggings (stretchy knits), or work out attire. Hope this helps😊.

User questions & answers

Question: What kind or brand of needles I need with this Brother Designio series DZI
Answer: Try tightening the tension knob
Question: Does it sew heavy material well like it shows in video
Answer: I have not used mine yet, but the pin that holds thread is small enough to hold regular spools of thread so I see no reason why it shouldn't work with spool or cone thread.
Question: Does this do a flatlock and also do rolled hems
Answer: it's fits for all bobbins including Type M, Type L, Type 15 (Universal) or any bobbin with 1/4 inch (0.64 cm) center hole.
Question: In the description for this one, under threading, it shows the Brother 1034D- does it thread the exact same way? Can you really use all thread types
Answer: I've been using it with out issue, I did find that going around the tensioner an extra time helped. You also may need to adjust the stopping point based on the bobbin style.

Welcome to Serging

Have you ever wondered how store-bought garments or home decor items get those perfectly stitched finished seams? Well, you can achieve this same professional finish on your own projects—with the help of a serger!

A serger, also known as an overlock machine, is different from a standard sewing machine. Although both machines sew stitches, they sew them differently. Each machine works best for different aspects of the sewing process. Just as a kitchen has a stove and a microwave oven, every sewing room should have a sewing machine and a serger. A serger helps make many of your sewing tasks faster and easier. It also allows you to create many specialty effects that aren’t possible with your sewing machine.

Once you start working with a serger, you’ll be amazed at how much time you save. You’ll love the results, too. Soon, you’ll wonder how you ever got along without one!

Have fun! You can sew it!

ALL ABOUT SERGERS

If you’ve never sewn with a serger, you’re in for a treat. Sergers are wonderful machines that trim the fabric edge, overcast it, and sew a seam all at the same time. They also sew lovely embellishment stitches and tightly rolled hems. Your serger will soon become one of the most useful tools in your sewing room. It’s not difficult to use—and you’ll soon appreciate how much more quickly you can sew and how professional looking your finished results will be!

SEWING WITH A SERGER

Before you start your project, take some time to learn how your serger sews. Even if you are familiar with a standard sewing machine, it’s a good idea to practice sewing with a serger to get the feel for it. A serger’s threading and thread tension are different from a sewing machine’s. Also, the serger’s blade cuts away part of the seam allowance as you stitch. You should know what to expect and how to guide the fabric through the machine. Once you’re comfortable with how the machine works, you’ll be ready to dive right in and start sewing!

SERGER STITCHES

There are many wonderful serger stitches. Each stitch is especially suited to a different type of sewing, but you can creatively embellish with them, too—especially if you work with decorative thread. Which stitches you use, and how you use them, depends in part on the type of serger you have—each type has a different number of threads, needles, and loopers. After you’ve chosen a stitch, you may need to thread your serger in a specific way, change the needle position, adjust the tension, change the presser foot, or disengage the blade—so always check the machine manual for the specific setup. Here are some of the basic stitches you’ll work with as you make the projects in this book.

THREADS, TOOLS, AND NOTIONS

There are so many thread choices for serging! You’ll work with regular sewing thread to construct your project, but when it’s time to add embellishment, you’ll enter the world of decorative specialty threads, fine ribbons, and yarns. Threads come in a variety of beautiful fibers. The projects in this book show you how to make the most of these materials. There are lots of different sewing tools and gadgets, too, but you need only a few basic ones to be all set to sew.

HOME DÉCOR PROJECTS

One of the fastest ways to update the look of a room is to change its accessories. Your serger helps you create home decor accents that have real style and a professional look—and are very easy to make! You can sew a blind hem for a curtain in no time. It’s simple to make coordinating tiebacks to hold open the curtain panels, too. Embellish small and simple accessories with serger stitches to add custom-designed decorator details. Try weaving ribbons through the flatlock stitch or create texture on a pillow with the cover stitch—or simply add a neat decorative edge to a length of a luscious fabric to make a cozy throw.

FASHION PROJECTS

A serger makes it extra easy for you to step out in style. It’s the perfect companion for your sewing machine. It stitches and trims seam allowances all with one pass—so sewing is faster than with a standard machine alone. The serger also offers a variety of specialty stitches that are not only useful, but lovely to look at, too. In this chapter, you’ll learn how to make a quick-to-sew, flirty peasant skirt with gathers and a classy lightweight wrap with fringe. You’ll also find fun accents—a wraparound belt with leather cord ties and embellishments to dress up any garment. There so many choices—the hardest part will be deciding which to make first!
