Hidcote, Gloucestershire

The Succeeding chapters of this book look at the rich variety of country house gardens, their stories, styles and personalities. But there is constant evidence that the reputations of Hidcote, Sissinghurst and Great Dixter as gardens people look to as models and for inspiration are unrivalled. Somehow in their similar but totally individual ways, this trio of gardens – all begun from scratch in the early decades of the twentieth century – have come to encapsulate what many other garden makers admire and would like to achieve themselves.

And so this chapter examines these three icons, in an attempt to shine some light on the origins of their stature. Of course, none was famous from the outset, and in Great Dixter’s case widespread acclaim beyond the audience of serious horticultural aficionados has come relatively recently – since the 1990s.

Sissinghurst, Kent

But perhaps most remarkable is the fact that a garden begun over a century ago has been regarded as an inspiration by successive generations of gardeners and that this is very likely to continue well into the future.

Taken together, all three gardens demonstrate that the ideal country house garden is not necessarily conventional. Certainly, none of the houses fits this mould: two – Hidcote and Great Dixter – were farmhouses when their gardens were begun; the other was the ruined remnant of an Elizabethan castle. But all three were sensitively transformed into a vision of a ‘house in the country’, a vision whose attainment lies at the heart of garden making in England. Their gardens were created around them to contribute consciously to the attainment of this vision, at the same time as incorporating outstanding horticulture.

Great Dixter, East Sussex

As well as their plantsmanship, all three places demonstrate other principles that have strengthened their appeal, in particular a clear affinity with the surrounding countryside and an emphasis on craftsmanship rather than impressive ornament. For many people, their designs are paramount, demonstrating ingenuity as well as exceptional use of space. And perhaps most crucial of all, they are all on a human, domestic scale that is both comfortable and attainable.

Finally, all three are intrinsically tied up with their creators, and so the reputations of place and person have gone hand-in-hand, each enhancing the other. There is no question that Lawrence Johnston, Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson, and Christopher Lloyd all deserve a place in gardening’s Valhalla and will always do so. The fact that what has happened at their gardens since their deaths has been closely scrutinized is healthy confirmation of the esteem and affection with which they are regarded.

Rousham House

Some of the celebrated, eighteenth-century, English landscape gardens – Stourhead and Studley Royal, for example – were conceived and remain entities in their own right without any visible relationship with a house. However, Rousham – one of the earliest landscape gardens and, for many garden historians, the most important and delightful – has always been a place where the ensemble of house, garden and surrounding landscape has been of primary importance, a composition that would not be complete without all three components. Rousham also has many other qualities to enhance its reputation, not least because – more than anywhere else of its period – it adapted the reality of the landscape garden into the ideal of a country house garden. Extending to only 10 hectares/25 acres Rousham presents the landscape style in a manageable scale that is comparable to that of other types of garden.

Kiftsgate Court

It is fascinating that two of the most admired English gardens, Kiftsgate Court and Hidcote, lie effectively next door to each other within easy walking distance on the far northwest outcrop of the Cotswolds – fascinating, but no coincidence, for the two gardens’ original creators, Lawrence Johnston and Heather Muir, were both close neighbours and friends. No doubt, they swapped ideas and plants as their two gardens developed and matured. In his book West Country Gardens, John Sales set out a succinct and fair analysis: ‘Compared with Hidcote, Kiftsgate’s garden layout relies more on its close affinity with the house, there is greater freedom and profusion in the planting. The colour schemes are a delight and rank alongside those at Hidcote. In many ways the two gardens are complementary; Hidcote with its unified and original structure and planting, Kiftsgate with its less ambitious but more personal luxuriance and its inspired essays in colour.’

Exbury

In 1919, Lionel De Rothschild, by then head of the celebrated family bank, N.M. Rothschild and Sons, purchased the Exbury Estate. In 1912 he had bought the adjacent Inchmery House, with the intention of making a garden there, but that had not been possible. Then, after the First World War, Lionel was able to transfer his ambitions to Exbury. These simple facts disguise the emotional inspiration for his garden, which combined with his growing horticultural interest.

At the outbreak of war in 1914, as the heir apparent of the city institution regarded by the British government as indispensable, Lionel was told he would not be able to go on active service. Instead, he had to stay in England at the helm of the family bank, while his two younger brothers, Evelyn and Anthony, went to the front. Both were wounded, and Evelyn died of his wounds in 1917.
