| Answer: | pretty sure it requires the water for cooling the light off. (you are only supposed to run in a few minutes a day at most anyway) also it's important to note you shouldn't place it anywhere that is going to expose your filtration to UV. You do not want to sterilize your bio filter. That being said It does work well. I used it in a new 35 gallon tank filled it up with water and the decorations and no filtration of any kind. just put the light on and let it run over night to sterilize the water before I started adding fish. When I saw the tank the next morning it was covered in tiny little bubbles, everywhere. turns out these form when bacterium are exposed to UV-B radiation in water. it forms oxygen bubbles. so it defiantly sterilizes for sure. I took the light back out of the tank and it didn't work much longer then that. after I contacted the manufacturer turns out I had over used it by leaving it on over night (again about 5 minutes a day is what they recommend). They were nice enough to replace the light for me. the replacement i still have but I have made it a part of a portable water scrubbing system that i can attach to any tank that is needing some water polish. one further note it does fit in the back (intake reservoir) of most HOB (hang on back) filters big enough to handle a 50+ gallon tank. I was using it on my 60 gallon tank before I built my scrubber. in the back of the hob filters they are usually able to shield the bio filter from uv radiation. |
