I was about to toss the pump and just pour it when I figured out how to do it-while tightly screwed to the top of the bottle, put it on a table and hold the bottle while putting a little weight on the pump and turning to get it open. I'm not sure which direction worked but I turned it the way the arrow on the pump indicated.

Answer:	If his beard is short to medium this is all he needs in the shower. For longer beards I would say both and recommend that the conditioner be used more often than the shampoo. I am assuming he will have a balm or oil post shower.
