Question:	If setting it up like the picture shown with the fire place, is there another way to mount it besides it being permanent
Answer:	We use the "Baby" Gate for our two standard poodles. We have not mounted it to the walls; instead, we use it as a stand alone fence to temporarily block off certain areas. We have it set up now as a kind of playpen for our 5 month old puppy to keep her confined while housebreaking and to keep her from eating our other dog's food at meal times. It works perfectly. We've been using it now for almost two years. Of course, it isn't as secure as it would be if it were attached to the walls, but we wanted something more portable to be used in various places.
Question:	is it free standing on carpet? i want to use this as barrier gate like an arch, does this product serve its purpose?fall when pushed by kids
Answer:	It was not mounted for a couple days and I had to secure it with bins on either side. It currently is wall mounted and I would not trust it around children. When I push on it, it has quite a bit of give (12 inches). I can push it and pull it which is probably putting a lot of stress on the wall screws. The only reason I am keeping it is because I have a 20lb mostly blind dog and not an active toddler.
Question:	will it handle chilren shaking the fence
Answer:	My son jumps up and down trying to shake the fence when he has temper tantrums. It holds up just fine. That said, ours is cable-tied down to rubber mats (link below). I highly recommend this solution, as in addition to shaking, many kids try to move the walls of these things and can move the entire pen around the room. Question:	can you put two of them together to make a bigger play area
Answer:	yes 2 can be connected. i have them connected to make a large enclosure, but it does move quite a bit.

Question:	Does this gate automatically close, or does it have to be pushed closed
Answer:	It needs to be closed. Great gate we love it. It has to be lifted slightly into place. A peg fits into a loop. Very secure and looks nice. Recommend it highly. We have it at the top of a steep staircase and it keeps our twin grand daughters safe.
Question:	What is the installed height of this gate
Answer:	The unit itself is 28" high, but it is not installed flush to the ground. Mine is 3" off the ground, making the total height 31".
Question:	Can the mounting hardware be installed perpendicular to the gate? Looks like the gate can swing 90 degrees, but latch has to be parallel to gate
Answer:	The SS30 model gate latch can be installed up to 30 degrees from the gate. It does swing 90 degrees, but because of the latch system it can't be mounted perpendicular to the gate. If the 90 degree installation is something you need, look at the Cardinal Gates Duragate Model MG25.
Question:	the latch system baffles toddlers" - Has anyone's child learn to open this gate
Answer:	I know this is a late answer to the question, but it may help future buyers. My son is 4 and my daughter is 2. I have regular visits from our preschool teachers (2 times a week or so, my state is awesome and provides in home learning) because my daughter is slow on talking. 5 different adult teachers come to my home on the reg still need reminding on how to open this gate. It's insane how awesome this latch system is. I never have to worry knowing that this is blocking my kids from the front door.

Question:	Can additional sections be ordered so the gate can be used in a wider space
Answer:	Im not sure about that. It does appear that you could use additional sections but, I don't know if the company sells them. You would need to contact the company and check. Its not a bad product and works well for us keeping our dogs from going upstairs.
Question:	How large are the wide openings at the bottom of the gate? I have cats and don't want them to slip through
Answer:	My 9 month old, 6.5 lb kitten can walk straight through the hinge section of the gate. My 10.5 lb middle cat managed to wiggle her head through before I grabbed her (I have no doubt she could have gotten the rest of her through). I wrapped a piece of fabric around this section which has done the trick. My kitten jumps to the top, balances and then jumps down. My older two cats who have been fighting, have not attempted to jump over to get at each other to fight, which was the purpose of the gate. When I want a little extra security, I hang a piece of fabric up another foot and a half from a couple command hooks. I don’t think most cats are going to try to jump through something.
Question:	How wide is door
Answer:	Just bought and installed this in my window so my cat won’t fall through the screen. Opens in so even if he pushes against it he won’t fall through, and I can still operate the sliding window fully. The largest two spaces are 2.75” apart, where the gate meets the side pieces. All other gaps are 2.25”. The only other gap is between the sides and your wall, but depending on how wide your space is, you can add and subtract on the sides. There are 4 side modules that you can add to just one or either side in any combination, or not use them at all. I have a 45” wide window (large wood casement all around), so I have just the gate on the right side where window opens, and used all 4 side modules together on the left. This leaves just under 2” gaps at each side, installed. So if your dog’s head cannot fit out the largest gap, 2.75”, and you keep the end gaps as small, then this will work. Install so the window opens in, obviously! I got the bronze, and it is a perfect match to the room. Looks lovely with the arched design. My large Ragdoll cat is happy just poking his nose through the slats and spreading out in the sun, listening to the birds he can’t catch, and I can open the window all the way now without him jumping at the screen anymore.
Question:	The gate is advertised as 36" tall, but at what height are the upper mounting points? My banister is only 35" tall
Answer:	The upper mounting points are 34" tall. You have one inch to spare. The arch on the gate is 36" tall.

Question:	I have a door wide gap between 36-37 inches. Will this gate be wide enough to work
Answer:	Love this product. I ordered two (1st one) worked well re. entry into the Fam. Rm but blocks Bath/Powder Rm Door and Toddler can see us and is somewhat comforted when we're busy (2nd one) there was a problem Gap frm Family Rm to the Kitchen a No No for the baby where the door gap-size is exactly 40-41" .... Even w/ the spindles ... this did NOT quite get it there with the basic product. Now need to order another 4" Extension.... Unfortunately the basic ordering page does NOT direct you to Extensions of this product .... hope this won't be a chore to order thru Amazon .... might have to contact Distributor directly But Product is 5 stars .... in my book ....

Question:	can a cat fit through the slots
Answer:	My cat( 9-10 lbs) can fit through the widest part next to where the gate opens. I think it's 2.5 inches. But I put pipe insulation duct taped over that slat and I think it made it thick enough that we can't fit through anymore.
Question:	Would this be high enough for a cat
Answer:	My cats ( one 9 lbs the other 18) will not jump it from the ground but the 9-10 pounder will from the top of the couch next to it! He also can squeeze between the widest part of the gate( I think it's 2.5 inches?) so I put insulation for pipes on the slats and duct taped it there and he hasn't tried it so far. I think it Made it thick enough so he can't fit through. He is a very petite cat with a small head.

Question:	Does this gate require two hands to opperate? Turning the knob with one hand while pulling the gate with another
Answer:	I'm not sure why there are varying answers to this, maybe the product changed? But mine requires two hands, you must push in and twist, then hold while you pull the gate open. To avoid this I twisted the knob and then shoved a thumbtack into the gap at the bottom of the knob, that works just fine for holding the knob in place.
Question:	The top clip to the retractable baby gate has snapped in half
Answer:	First the bottom, in my case -- and after a 'hack-y' fix that lasted another week -- now the top has broken. Doesn't look like a replaceable part -- I've spent a lot of time thinking on how I could "add some hardware" to simulate the missing clips. A shame - because I liked the gate, in concept. Definitely wasn't up to the abuses of regular use and an enthusiastic puppy.
Question:	Does it lock in place when expanded? In other words, does it stay in place if a baby try’s to push it
Answer:	The gate latches to a wall catch plate that holds it while extended. If a baby pushes on the gate or falls on the gate while extended it will flex as the retractable roller does not lock in place. We use these gates as dog barriers and my dogs jump on them all the time, it will flex and then return to use position.
Question:	Does the 71 inch width include the mounting brackets
Answer:	Be VERY cautious if you are buying this for a large opening. Yes it does extend to 70-71 inches (not 72)... however, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT: you need to twist the knob on the left side of the screen before it retracts, and at the same time use your right hand to unhook the screen on the right side. This is a safety feature to make it hard for little kids to retract the screen, it makes it nearly impossible to use for a very large opening, unless you have like a 7-foot wing span and can reach both end of the screen at once. I'm going to contact amazon for a refund because this is not mentioned in the listing info. While it does technically extend to close to six feet, it is not practical at all to use for a six foot opening. (and unfortunately I didn't find this out until it was mounted and I drilled 8 holes in my wall.)

Question:	Do they need to be drilled into the walls or Bannister rail
Answer:	You don't have to. We opted not to and the friction pads seem to work pretty well. The manufacturer provides plastic sockets(2 for each side), or holders, which can be secured with screws to walls or stair-rail posts if you choose but, as I said, it is not absolutely required to do so. We have a chihuahua but if you have a dog with the will to do so the gates may be pushed over. Answer:	Yes, you can still close the door. We have ours installed in the frame of our bedroom door and the door still closes as it normally would.

Answer:	The gate cannot extend to 44". It can extend to 37" using the 6" extension included. If you need wider, you will have to take off the 6" extender and add on another extender (I see a 12" extender available on Amazon). So you only gain a net 6" with that extender.

Don't Cut the Belt !

1. The gate you received is unassembled, tied by a belt. As installation begins, you will notice a gap (it was not broken).
2. Do not cut the belt before you finish installing the gate , it will help you install the gate easily.
3. Place the gate at openings, rotate 4 bolts until the space between the handle is within 0.06". (Through reaction force the gap you saw will disappear.)
