Answer:	My cat actually jumped on the rim and attempted to break though. Luckily when it was empty. Her effort was unsuccessful but if she had been really persistent I am sure she could have figured out how to push through to open it. She only tried it once and then left it alone. There is not much of a ledge for them to sit on...so I think that helps too. I would not trust that it is 100% reliable in keeping cats out but that it can help be a barrier giving you a little time to intervene. It was honestly what led me to purchase this because I do think it will provide some protection from curious cats :)
