14 best strut compressors
A strut compressor is a tool used in automotive maintenance, specifically for compressing the coil springs found in a vehicle's suspension system, particularly the struts. The tool is used when removing or installing struts, allowing for safe handling of the coil springs.
Key features and aspects of strut compressors include:
Purpose: The primary purpose of a strut compressor is to safely compress the coil springs on a vehicle's struts. This is necessary for various maintenance tasks like replacing struts, changing springs, or performing other suspension-related work.
Safety: Strut compressors are designed with safety in mind to prevent accidents that could occur when dealing with the high tension of coil springs. They secure the springs in place and reduce the risk of injury.
Design: Strut compressors typically consist of two threaded rods, clamps, and hooks that securely hold and compress the coil spring. The design ensures even compression across the spring, maintaining its shape.
Usage: To use a strut compressor, the tool is positioned around the coil spring, and the threaded rods are tightened to compress the spring. This process reduces the tension, allowing for safe removal or installation of the strut components.
Compatibility: Strut compressors come in various designs to cater to different types and sizes of coil springs, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of vehicles.
Manual and Hydraulic Compressors: Strut compressors can be manual or hydraulic. Manual versions require physical effort to turn the threaded rods and compress the spring, while hydraulic versions use hydraulic power for easier and quicker compression.
Versatility: Some strut compressors are versatile and can be used for various vehicles, making them a valuable tool in automotive repair shops.
Safety Features: Modern strut compressors often come with additional safety features, such as locking mechanisms and safety pins, to ensure the compressed spring remains securely in place during the suspension work.
In the automotive industry, strut compressors are essential tools for safely handling coil springs, particularly in the context of working on struts and the suspension system. They contribute to the overall safety and efficiency of automotive repair and maintenance processes.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work on a 1969 Ford Mustang |
Answer: | I don't see why it wouldn't I used it on my 13 f150 |
Question: | Will these work on a 2005 dodge stratus 4 door sedan |
Answer: | I' can't say for sure but I would see no reason why they would not. The coil springs on the Sedona van were good size and these compressors had no problem doing the job. They have a hex shaped end for a wrench or socket to adjust them with. But if the strut is too close to the tool to get a socket on they also allow a 1/2 drive extension to be inserted into the end for adjustment. This is the method I used and preferred. |
Question: | Where is this made in |
Answer: | Made in China, but they work fine. One thing when using these or this type of compressor is that you only need to compress spring just enough to make the top hat loose then you can loosen the hat nut. Most people compress way too much when it is not needed. |
Question: | Does anyone know what size socket is needed to clamp these down? I plan on using an air gun, just need to make sure I have the right size socket |
Answer: | My set takes a 21mm socket or a 13/16" socket (fits very snug). However, the hex end has a female socket for a 1/2" drive. So a 1/2" ratchet with an extension would work as well. I would be careful using an air tool instead of a wrench or ratchet. You may get one side a head of the other. It actually does not take much to compress the springs. Be sure to lubricate the threads before starting. My set came lubricated but I added anti-seize to be sure. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Ram 1500 stock. Are these long and strong enough and will the safety pins engage |
Answer: | They were strong enough on my 2017 Ram 1500, but I think the coil diameter was too thick to engage the safety pins. |
Question: | has anyone used these on a 2013 f150 and managed to not take their head off with the front strut spring |
Answer: | Mine was a 2000 Volvo XC. Trucks shouldn't make any diff though unless, your springs are longer than the length of the compressor. If so you may have to buy another length. The compressor is set up to not be at a 90 degree from the spring. Tap the clamps just after they get tight to be sure that they lay flat on the spring where the threaded nut meets the ball. If not, a couple cranks later when tightening the nuts will want to slide to that location. |
Question: | Will these work for larger springs? A 2005 Expedition? The springs are thicker than most cars |
Answer: | Just worked perfectly on an 06 F150 |
Question: | Has anyone used theses on a Honda crv |
Answer: | I have used this OEM strut compressor on a 2007 Honda Accord and a 2000 Honda Civic. As long as you understand the functionality of the compressor and how to properly remove the spring from the shock safely then you should have no problems with using this on the most strut and shock assemblies. |
