12 best spring compressors
Spring compressors are tools used in automotive maintenance and repair, particularly in the context of suspension systems. They are designed to safely compress and hold coil springs, allowing mechanics and DIY enthusiasts to remove or replace various suspension components, such as shock absorbers, struts, or control arms. Here's what you should know about spring compressors:
Purpose:
- Spring compressors are primarily used to compress coil springs, which are integral components of a vehicle's suspension system.
- Compressing the coil spring reduces tension, making it safer to remove or replace other suspension components.
Types of Spring Compressors:
- External Spring Compressors: These compressors consist of hooks or clamps that attach to the outside of the spring, compressing it inward.
- Internal Spring Compressors: Internal compressors fit inside the spring, compressing it from the inside.
Safety Considerations:
- Safety is of utmost importance when using spring compressors. Coil springs store a significant amount of potential energy, and if not handled properly, they can release with great force, posing a serious risk of injury.
- Always use the correct size and type of spring compressor for the specific vehicle and spring being worked on.
- Ensure that the compressor is securely attached to the spring before attempting to compress it.
- Use safety goggles, gloves, and other personal protective equipment to protect against potential accidents.
Applications:
- Spring compressors are commonly used when replacing or servicing shock absorbers, struts, or suspension components.
- They are essential for tasks like replacing worn-out suspension parts, upgrading to aftermarket suspension components, or making repairs to the suspension system.
Operation:
- To use a spring compressor, it is typically clamped onto the coil spring, and then a threaded rod is turned to gradually compress the spring.
- The spring should be compressed evenly to prevent it from shifting or slipping during the process.
Maintenance:
- Spring compressors should be kept clean and well-maintained to ensure their proper functioning.
- Regularly inspect the compressor for signs of wear and damage, especially on the threads and clamping mechanisms.
Professional Use:
- While spring compressors can be used by experienced DIYers, they are often used by professional mechanics who have the training and expertise to handle suspension components safely.
In summary, spring compressors are crucial tools in the automotive world, especially when working on suspension systems. When used correctly and with safety precautions in mind, they enable the safe removal and replacement of suspension components, ensuring the vehicle's proper handling and ride quality.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work on a 1969 Ford Mustang |
Answer: | I don't see why it wouldn't I used it on my 13 f150 |
Question: | Will these work on a 2005 dodge stratus 4 door sedan |
Answer: | I' can't say for sure but I would see no reason why they would not. The coil springs on the Sedona van were good size and these compressors had no problem doing the job. They have a hex shaped end for a wrench or socket to adjust them with. But if the strut is too close to the tool to get a socket on they also allow a 1/2 drive extension to be inserted into the end for adjustment. This is the method I used and preferred. |
Question: | Where is this made in |
Answer: | Made in China, but they work fine. One thing when using these or this type of compressor is that you only need to compress spring just enough to make the top hat loose then you can loosen the hat nut. Most people compress way too much when it is not needed. |
Question: | Does anyone know what size socket is needed to clamp these down? I plan on using an air gun, just need to make sure I have the right size socket |
Answer: | My set takes a 21mm socket or a 13/16" socket (fits very snug). However, the hex end has a female socket for a 1/2" drive. So a 1/2" ratchet with an extension would work as well. I would be careful using an air tool instead of a wrench or ratchet. You may get one side a head of the other. It actually does not take much to compress the springs. Be sure to lubricate the threads before starting. My set came lubricated but I added anti-seize to be sure. |

Spring Compressor Tool
- 🚗 If you're fixing your vehicle's suspension, one essential tool is a strut spring compressor. It aids in reducing the size of your springs so they are easier to remove. You need to find a tool that is sturdy, durable, and won't compromise your safety because handling springs can be dangerous. Handor Coil Spring Compressor Tool is the best spring compressors that will help you complete the job carefully and efficiently.
- 🚗 Handor strut and coil compressor sets are perfect for removing and installing coil springs. It has a wide jaw capacity of 23-280 mm and works on a variety of vehicles, including trucks and large sedans. Each pair has a weight capacity of over 2,206 pounds. The tool includes lower security jaws and adjustable safety bars and can be used with a 19 mm hex socket or wrench, , assisting the mechanic with years of compression jobs.
- 🚗 The compressor is rugged and durable, so it resists bending or warping under high tension. The hex nuts are easy to turn, so they can better grip the springs. The tool requires very little effort to use, and the jaws securely grab onto the spring. The design also allows you to have something to hold onto while you're doing the job, which is very convenient. This compressor comes in a carrying case, which is a big plus.
- 🚗 This tool easily removes strut springs and is designed for both professional and garage mechanics. Its forged hooks and center screw are strong, long lasting, and built to withstand extreme pressure. This heavy-duty compressor does not slip or slide and works as advertised. It also does not strip or shear if you use an impact wrench.
- 🚗 Even lifted off of the ground, your suspension springs can still be under quite a load. This static energy can spell disaster if you don’t use a spring compressor to control the springs’ decompression. Performing your own automotive repairs can save you a lot of money. Buying a new tool and employing it is often the cheaper option over taking your car to a repair shop!

Question: | What is the pin for? Do you lock it in before or after you compress the spring |
Answer: | The pin is for securing the hook to the coil spring. I would lock it before you compress because you need all the protection and safety measures you can get. Spring compression is a dangerous game to play. This tool is good for compact or maybe a mid size vehicle. BTW I have a cargo van characterized as a light truck and with the thicker guage coil springs. These spring compressors were awful and inept. Unsuitable for my van. They may work beautiful for your car though depending on what you got |
Question: | Will these work with 620 lb coils |
Answer: | Very universal tool ,should be fine. |
Question: | Will this work on a full size bronco? same springs as a ford f-150 from |
Answer: | I've used these on a Nissan titan and a Subaru crosstrek. They're pretty universal. |
