14 best coil spring compressors
Coil spring compressors are essential tools used in automotive suspension work to safely and effectively remove and install coil springs in a vehicle's suspension system. They are crucial for tasks such as replacing worn-out springs, upgrading suspension components, or performing other suspension-related repairs. Here are some key points about coil spring compressors:
Purpose: Coil spring compressors are used to compress coil springs, reducing their tension and allowing for easy removal or installation. This is necessary when working on shock absorbers, struts, or other suspension components.
Safety: Safety is paramount when dealing with coil springs, which store a significant amount of energy when compressed. Coil spring compressors help prevent accidents by securing the spring, minimizing the risk of it suddenly releasing its stored energy.
Types: There are two main types of coil spring compressors:
- External Coil Spring Compressors: These compressors sit on the outside of the coil spring. They typically consist of two threaded rods with hooks or clamps that secure the spring from the outside.
- Internal Coil Spring Compressors: These compressors are inserted into the coil spring, where they expand to compress the spring from the inside. They are often used in more confined spaces.
Components: Coil spring compressors typically consist of threaded rods, hooks or clamps, and safety mechanisms. The threaded rods are used to apply pressure to the spring, while hooks or clamps secure the spring in place. Safety mechanisms, such as locking pins or safety cages, help prevent accidents.
Usage: When using a coil spring compressor, it's important to follow manufacturer instructions carefully. Typically, the compressor is attached to the coil spring, and the threaded rods are tightened evenly to compress the spring.Once compressed, the spring can be safely removed or installed.
Safety Precautions: When working with coil spring compressors, always wear appropriate safety gear, including safety glasses and gloves. Inspect the compressor for damage or wear before use, and ensure that it is securely fastened to the spring.
Professional Use: While coil spring compressors are available for purchase and use by automotive enthusiasts, it's important to note that handling coil springs can be dangerous. If you are not experienced with suspension work, it is advisable to seek the assistance of a qualified automotive technician to ensure safety and proper installation.
In summary, coil spring compressors are crucial tools in the automotive industry, specifically for suspension-related tasks. They help ensure the safe removal and installation of coil springs, contributing to the overall safety and performance of a vehicle's suspension system. Proper usage and safety precautions are essential when working with coil spring compressors.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work on a 1969 Ford Mustang |
Answer: | I don't see why it wouldn't I used it on my 13 f150 |
Question: | Will these work on a 2005 dodge stratus 4 door sedan |
Answer: | I' can't say for sure but I would see no reason why they would not. The coil springs on the Sedona van were good size and these compressors had no problem doing the job. They have a hex shaped end for a wrench or socket to adjust them with. But if the strut is too close to the tool to get a socket on they also allow a 1/2 drive extension to be inserted into the end for adjustment. This is the method I used and preferred. |
Question: | Where is this made in |
Answer: | Made in China, but they work fine. One thing when using these or this type of compressor is that you only need to compress spring just enough to make the top hat loose then you can loosen the hat nut. Most people compress way too much when it is not needed. |
Question: | Does anyone know what size socket is needed to clamp these down? I plan on using an air gun, just need to make sure I have the right size socket |
Answer: | My set takes a 21mm socket or a 13/16" socket (fits very snug). However, the hex end has a female socket for a 1/2" drive. So a 1/2" ratchet with an extension would work as well. I would be careful using an air tool instead of a wrench or ratchet. You may get one side a head of the other. It actually does not take much to compress the springs. Be sure to lubricate the threads before starting. My set came lubricated but I added anti-seize to be sure. |

Conical Spring
for very thick conical spring wire, I suggest your use three compressors or risk damaging the tool while the spring is compressed
reversing the pin and inserting it the other direction

Question: | Impact wrench: two part question. are the compressors rated for impact wrenches? has anyone used the compressors with impact wrenches |
Answer: | My springs are 15" tall x 5" wide (outside diameter) with 5/8" coils and it worked great. The jaws are 6 3/4" wide (inside dimension) when fully extended, ie perpendicular to the center drive bolt. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Can this work on gsxr |
Answer: | That's a good question. It's not in the advertisement description? If you haven't bought it or tried it yet, I can confirm that it worked a lot better than I thought it would have. Definitely not just a "one time use" tool. 2011 Nissan Murano LE. If I can come up with a better answer for you on the warranty, I'll post again. |
Question: | This product fits my 88 honda crx |
Answer: | To an extent, it doesn't matter what the coil diameter is. If you can put this in the center of the spring and hook them safely / properly onto the coils, then you shouldn't have a problem. Also, make sure you lube the threads and the bolt threads freely. As a safety measure, get a length of >.375" linked chain with a nut & bolt and thick washer and secure it to the control arm or secured frame component. That way, if the anything goes wrong, you won't have the kinetic energy of that spring putting you in the hospital or morgue. Safety first! |
Question: | Failures. Some purchaser are stating compressor failure. Has anyone experienced failure when compressing car (automobile) or van strut springs |
Answer: | The rod is 11" long. The threaded portion is 9-1/4" long. Hope this helps. |

Question: | Has anyone used this on a W115? Specifically a 220D (mine is a |
Answer: | Do not purchase this item, cheap weak steel threads! Used it once and it is now stripped and useless! |
Question: | It arrived but it doesn't fit through the hole on my control arm. 1984 380sl R |
Answer: | This product is junk. Don't buy it. |
Question: | Do you think it would work on the front springs of a 96.chevy C |
Answer: | I used these to change the struts out of a 1999 4Runner. They worked until the last moment when I was actually removing them from the last repaired strut. As I was decompressing the spring, the tool popped, and the bottom housing shot across the room. Fortunately, no one was in the way. When I examined the defective compression tool, the screw and the housing were both stripped. When I examined the other compression tool, it was also on the verge of failure, showing the same signs of stripping along the center screw and the tube (housing) threads. I was fortunate it didn't fail as well. Overall, this was the easiest tool for manually compressing a strut spring I have ever used. If the manufacturer could produce these using a harder metal, which doesn't strip the screw and housing threads as you compress the strut, this would be the best tool available for this kind of job. Until there is proof of that, I dont know that I would buy it again. |

Question: | Will this work on 1 ton chevrolet coil springs |
Answer: | I replaced mine with these with excellent results. I have a W115 75 240 D. Don't attempt this without the spring compressor specifically designed for these model cars. Seriously. Even then you have to carefully plan the approach and adjust the tool and there are some tricks. Well worth the repair though. Your car will sit taller, like new. With the springs out, other worn out rubber components will be accessible. Replace all of those you can. |
Question: | Will this work on a grand marquis front coils? Are the plates big enough |
Answer: | I've only use the tool once on a 1988 260E and it fit perfectly. It listed the models that it fits so does your have aftermarket lower control arms? Maybe you could open up the hole with a grinder a little. good luck sorry I don't have a better answer. |
Question: | would this work on my 1991 dodge D350 front springs |
Answer: | I bought this for my Merc 300d which has an extremely heavy engine, thus really tough hard to handle front suspension springs. |
