13 best coolants
Coolants, in the context of automotive maintenance and the oil system, play a crucial role in regulating the temperature of the engine and ensuring its proper functioning. Here's what you need to know about coolants:
Purpose: Coolants, also known as antifreeze, are liquids used in the cooling system of a vehicle's engine. They serve to dissipate heat generated during engine operation and prevent the engine from overheating.
Composition: Coolants are typically a mixture of water and antifreeze additives. The antifreeze additives are essential for lowering the freezing point of the coolant and raising its boiling point, making it suitable for use in various temperature conditions.
Cooling System: Coolants circulate through the engine's cooling system, which includes a radiator, water pump, hoses, and a thermostat. The coolant absorbs heat from the engine and carries it to the radiator, where it releases heat to the surrounding air.
Types of Coolants: There are two primary types of coolants used in vehicles:
- Ethylene Glycol-Based: This is the most common type of coolant. It provides effective freeze protection and corrosion inhibition but needs to be handled with care due to its toxicity.
- Propylene Glycol-Based: This type of coolant is less toxic than ethylene glycol-based coolants, making it a safer choice. However, it may have slightly lower heat transfer properties.
Coolant Color: Different brands and types of coolant come in various colors, such as green, orange, pink, or red. The color doesn't necessarily indicate the type or quality of the coolant; it is primarily a branding choice by manufacturers.
Maintenance: It's essential to maintain the proper coolant level in the radiator and regularly check for any leaks. Coolant levels should be checked when the engine is cool, and any necessary top-ups should use a mixture of water and the appropriate coolant type.
Cooling System Flushing: Over time, coolant can become contaminated with rust, scale, and debris. It's recommended to flush and replace the coolant at intervals specified in the vehicle's owner's manual. This process ensures that the cooling system operates efficiently and prevents corrosion.
Corrosion Protection: Coolants contain corrosion inhibitors that protect the engine's metal components from rust and corrosion. These inhibitors degrade over time, so regular coolant changes are essential to maintain this protection.
Safety: Always handle coolant with care. It can be toxic if ingested and harmful to the environment. Dispose of used coolant properly and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
In summary, coolants are vital components of a vehicle's cooling system, helping to regulate engine temperature and prevent overheating. They come in different types and colors, but their primary function is to dissipate heat and protect the engine from freezing and corrosion. Regular maintenance and coolant changes are necessary to ensure the cooling system's proper function and protect the engine from damage.

Question: | When I Looked up this one popped up for dexcool. What’s the difference |
Answer: | I just had it installed a day ago it seems to have better power. And it also has seems to have better shift points I tried to program it for gas mileage doesn’t seem to of helped as of yet |
Question: | Is this a pink |
Answer: | The box it came in said it was for 2017 and up |
Question: | Is this green coolent |
Answer: | Yes, you can. But for best results, you should use with an oil change. |
Question: | What is the difference between this and Valvoline long life coolant for asian vehicles which sells for |
Answer: | HI Jon. Yes, I have noticed an improvement in oil consumption. We have a 02 Chevy Avalanche with about 220k on it and it would generally need a quart added between changes. We now add the Lucas Stabilizer as part of the oil change and there is now no need to add oil between changes. Also of note is that we had an annoying valve tappet noise when cold starting the engine. With the addition of the Lucas this has been significantly reduced. My Quicklube oil change shop does not carry Lucas but I order it on Amazon and take it with me and they add it. Hope this helps. Oh, one more thing, the Lucas automatic transmission additive is also extremely effective. Happy motoring. |

Question: | i intend buying 8 gals to africa. my toyoyta sequoia 2008 needs 4 and i need 4 as reserve. what is the shelf life of this product if un opened |
Answer: | The manufacturer's product information page states a 5 year shelf life for this product. |
Question: | So my coolant is about to hit low and going to add some of this can i mix this with pink coolant? pretty sure the pink comes from oem |
Answer: | Using this to top off pink/red coolant will be fine, I've used this to replace the coolant in my 05 Solara and to top off my 17 Camry. Most of the long life coolants are basically the same however there are some you shouldn't mix anything else with like GM's Dexcool. |
Question: | Does this coolant contain 2-EHA (2-ethylhexanoic acid |
Answer: | Ingredient label says: "Ethylene Glycol (107-21-1), Water (7732-18-5), Diethylene Glycol (111-46-6), Sodium Benzoate (532-32-1), Corrosion Inhibitors, Defoamers, Dye, and Bittering Agent" |
Question: | is it safe for honda odyssey |
Answer: | Old question, but the Zerex stuff (and Wal Mart's Valvoline Asian) as both red. Honda uses Type 2 blue coolant. It would probably work, but I wouldn't want to mix colors. Either get the OEM Honda stuff which is around $22 a gallon now, or you can go generic and buy the blue stuff from Pentosin (Pentosin Pentofrost A3). The Pentosin is the closest thing to OEM Honda coolant you can get. |

Question: | This is the exact coolant my manual says to buy but in the match your vehicle drop down it's saying this is not a match for my 2014 grand Jeep Cheroke |
Answer: | I believe that is because the Mopar part number is not in the title. I compared it with another listing to make sure. It says the right MS spec on the bottle. |
Question: | Is this the right coolant for my Jeep Wrangler jk |
Answer: | YES! This is the OAT coolant your 2013+ Jeep JK needs! Do not use the 5 years / 100k HOAT type!!! These 2 varieties DO NOT mix and will clog up your system. |
Question: | Does this work in a 2017 jeep wrangler? I was told it wouk |
Answer: | If your vehicle calls for MS-12106 then this is the coolant you need. On my 2017 Pacifica it was labeled right on the filler cap. |
Question: | what color is it |

Question: | I believe valvoline replaced our coolant with this in yellow. chrysler recommends hoat 5 year 100,000 mile. would using this be ok |
Answer: | I have had it in my 2005 Durango 4.7 for 2 years now with no issues. Truck runs cooler than before. |
Question: | More than 50/50% won't transfer heat as well. Less concentrate will not prevent corrosion properly. This is aside from temp issues w/freeze/boil |
Answer: | Estimate the minimum temperature your car will see and then use the chart at http://www.valvoline.com/pdf/Valvoline_MaxLife_AFC_Technical_Bulletin.pdf to determine the concentration needed to prevent freezing at that temperature. I would be more concerned with freezing your block than reduced heat transfer. To some extent, your car's cooling system will compensate for the compromised heat transfer properties of a higher concentration. |
Question: | Is this the concentrate or is this the 50 / 50 premix |
Answer: | it is the concentrate |
Question: | How wide is the mouth of the container |
Answer: | About the same as a regular antifreeze gallon container |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i use this my 2001 jeep grand cherokee laredo and 2003 toyota corolla ce |
Answer: | Yes, but it will be much more expensive than mass market automotive coolants. Most other coolants are ethylene glycol (EG), this is propylene glycol(PG). This (Engine Ice) coolant is more environmentally friendly and does work a little better for cooling. I use it in my motorcycle for track use because most tracks ban EG - because EG's toxic and slick if spilled on the track. If you use this, flush your old system as thoroughly as possible with demineralized or distilled water to avoid diluting this new coolant with left over EG. Look up PG and EG on Google to see other pros and cons... |
Question: | Do i have to do a flush, or is this coolant okay to be mix |
Answer: | Iit is diffent than regular coolant. I flushed with water and then added. See one is propylene glycol and the other may be ethylene glycol. I believe engine ice is propylene glycol. |
Question: | Does this come prediluted |
Answer: | As previously stated, Engine Ice is prediluted. I own a Honda CRF450X and one container was more than enough for my bike. |
Question: | Can I use this in my 2009 Yamaha fz6r |
Answer: | Yes. I actually called Yamaha Headquarters before putting it in my 07 Yamaha R1 just to be sure that it was safe. Yamaha said they can't recommend it as they have their own product line but it's completely safe to use. I'm extremely pleased with it myself, my bike runs 20° cooler now, I kid you not. It's been great for me so far and I put it in approx 3 months ago or so. Go for it, you won't be disappointed. Flush the old fluid out with DISTILLED water until it comes out as clear as possible then put the engine ice in. I would def purchase again. |

Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant
Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant is biodegradable, phosphate free & non-toxic; typically reducing operating race temperatures and effectively keeping boil over temperatures to 256°F or less and freeze-up protection to -26° F.
The Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant formulation has shown outstanding performance in testing that measures its ability to prevent corrosion within all cooling systems, including aluminum, copper, cast iron, steel, magnesium & solder. Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant has shown excellent performance in all of the AS D 5216 (Propylene Glycol Base Engine Coolant) tests. Also, Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant meets all the corrosion performance requirements of AS D 3306 & AS 4985 (the main specifications for premium ethylene glycol antifreeze). Plus it will not harm your seals or gaskets. Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant meets or exceeds all AS (American Society for Testing and Materials) and SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Standards and Requirements. These are industry standards in most everything mechanical and engine-based, including motorcycles and cars.
Performance right out of the bottle
Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant ready to provide you with dependable horsepower and is proven to reduce operating temperatures. The key to horsepower is not losing it! Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant is engineered to keep your operating temperatures at optimum performance to not lose power through excess heat.
Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant will provide you with dependable power and reduced operating temperatures regardless of the terrain you tackle.
Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant has an excellent high heat capacity and thermal conductivity characteristic, which in testing, has proven to exceed the abilities of most (ethylene glycol) coolants. It provides efficient & effective engine heat transfer.
Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant is a proven product, with added environmental benefits to assure the longevity of your engine, and the world we play in.
Ready to Use
Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant is pre-mixed with de-ionized water. The process of de-ionizing water eliminates all of the impurities that can do harm to your cooling system. Regardless if you are using tap, bottled, distilled, spring or R/O (reverse osmosis) waters, it can still contain minute particles of iron, magnesium, rust, lime and calcium. Many of these waters also contain chemicals, such as chlorine, fluorides and acids. Want proof? Take two different brands of distilled waters and perform your own taste test. They each taste different don’t they? If water were water, why would they be different? It’s because of the varying amounts of chemicals and minerals in these waters. These minerals and chemicals are what is the cause the scarring, scaling and mineral build-ups in your cooling system. Many also attribute these minerals and chemicals to water pump seal and gasket failures.
Formulated with Propylene Glycol
As compared to the ethylene glycol used in most other brands, propylene glycol is far less toxic and safer for children, pets, and wildlife. Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant is also phosphate free (phosphates kill the smallest forms of life in the environment in addition to trees and plants). Propylene glycol comes in both an industrial form and a pharmaceutical form and is used in many consumer products including hair conditioners, cosmetics, and many over-the-counter medications.
Propylene Glycol, the base fluid of Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant , meets or exceeds all AS, SAE, Government and Manufacturers standards. It also has NO statutes or health warnings from the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA), CERCLA (Superfund), Superfund Amendments & Re-authorization Act (SARA), Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA), American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH), Federal Health & Safety Administration (FHSA).

Question: | Can this be used for a 2009 328i |
Answer: | According to FCP website this fits your car, this is pretty much the standard coolant/antifreeze for most of the BMW cars I know of. I used it on my 2001 M3 and 2005 325ciIf you are doing a complete coolant flush/replacement on your car, then you need to get one jar of this and mix it in a bucket with another 1 Gallon jar of Purified Water (sold in any convenience store, purified water only, not spring water) |
Question: | Does this coolant need to be diluted or used directly "as is"? If it should be diluted what's the best ratio with water |
Answer: | Diluted using DISTILLED water. 50/50 is a safe ratio. I've heard some guys running 70/30 but I've been running 50/50 for years with no problems. |
Question: | I am familiar with the traditional BLUE coolant used by BMW. The title of this product says GREY. Is this in reference to the color of the fluid |
Answer: | The container is Grey, I have purchased this item. The coolant color is BMW Blue, not sure why the description says Grey... |
Question: | is it pet friendly |
Answer: | It is still toxic, but my understanding is that BMW adds a "embittering agent" that makes it taste bad to some/most pets. |
