What is OBD-II?

On-board diagnostics (OBD) is an automotive term referring to a vehicle's self-diagnostic and reporting capability. Vehicles produced after 1996 use OBD-II, which is a standardized system that simplifies the process a whole lot. These vehicles all use a common diagnostic connector and a set of universal trouble codes. Though only emission-related codes and data are required to be transmitted through it according to U.S. legislation, most manufacturers have made the OBD-II Data Link Connector the main connector in the vehicle through which all systems are diagnosed and reprogrammed.

At the most basic level, the check engine light indicates that some sensor, somewhere in your engine, exhaust, or transmission, has provided unexpected data to computer. That could indicate a problem with the system the sensor is responsible for monitoring, a bad sensor, or even a wiring issue.

Why I can't erase the fault code?

Once the monitors are reset, the MIL will either remain out because the DTC was corrected by the proper repair, or it will illuminate because it has again detected the problem.

Diagnostic Scan Tool Vehicle Coverage

The Performance Tool OBD II Scan Tool is specially designed to work with all OBD II compliant vehicles, including those equipped with the next-generation protocol-Control Area Network (CAN). It is required by EPA that All 1996 and newer vehicles (cars and light trucks) sold.

in the United States must be OBD II compliant and this includes all Domestic, Asian and European vehicles. A small number of 1994 and 1995 model year gasoline vehicles are OBD II compliant. To verify if a 1994 or 1995 vehicle is OBD II compliant, check the Vehicle Emissions Control Information (VECI) Label which is located under the hood or by the radiator of most vehicles. If the vehicle is OBD II compliant, the label will designate 'OBD II Certified'. Additionally, Government regulations mandate that all OBD II compliant vehicles must have a 'common' sixteen-pin Data Link Connector (DLC). For your vehicle to be OBD II compliant it must have a 16-pin DLC (Data Link Connector) under the dash and the Vehicle Emission Control Information Label must state that the vehicle is OBD II compliant.

Check Engine Light

The Check Engine Light must be on for the Diagnostic Scan Tool to send a trouble code. If there is not a check engine light on then there is nothing the vehicle's computer can relay to the scan tool. If there is not a check engine light on, it does not guarantee that there is nothing wrong with the vehicle.

If you believe there is something wrong with your vehicle, take it to a professional mechanic.

Where to Connect

Locate the 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC) and plug into the scan tool cable connector to the DLC. Location may vary depending on vehicle make and model but should in the area between the steering wheel and peddles.

Caution: Don’t connect or disconnect any test equipment with ignition on or engine running.

Scan Tool Display

Wait for the LCD display to read:

'C.A.N. OBD2'.

Once you see this screen, you are clear to move onto the next step and insert your key.

Ignition in The ‘On’ Position

Turn the ignition on. But do not start the engine. Press the enter button. A sequence of messages showing the OBD2 protocols will be observed on the display until the vehicle protocol is detected.

No Codes Message

If there are no Diagnostic Trouble Codes retrieved, the display will indicate 'No codes'.

If you receive a no codes display then the computer from the car is not transmitting trouble code. It does not guarantee that there is nothing wrong with the vehicle.

If you believe there is something wrong with your vehicle even after a 'No Codes' display, take it to a trained professional mechanic.

Link Error Message

If a 'Link error!' message shows up:

1) Verify that the ignition is in the 'On' position.

2) Check if the code reader’s OBD II connector is securely connected to the vehicle’s DLC (Picture 2 above).

3) Verify that the vehicle is OBD2 compliant.

4) Turn the ignition off and wait for about 10 seconds.

5) Turn the ignition back to on and repeat the procedure from step 5.

Diagnostic Trouble Codes

Read the Diagnostic Trouble Codes by pressing the scroll button. Once you have identified the trouble code, reference page 18-45 of the user manual that is included with the scan tool. (if you do not have the manual you can find it in the link above or the manufacture website for and PDF copy). The code you receive will give you a general location of where the problem is occurring.

Erase Check Engine Codes

Do not erase the codes before the system has been checked completely by a technician.

1) If you decide to erase the DTCs, Select '2. erase' from the main menu by pressing the enter button.

2) A message of 'Erase? Yes/ No' comes up asking for your confirmation.

3) If you do not want to proceed with erasing the codes, press the scroll button to exit.

4) If you do wish to proceed to erase the codes, then press the enter button.

5) If the codes are cleared successfully, an 'Erase Done!' message will show on the display. Press the enter button to Return to the Main Menu list.

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Definitions

Caution: Parts or components should not be replaced based on only a DTC without first consulting the vehicle service manual for more information on possible causes of the fault as well as required testing procedures.

1,000 of the most common trouble codes are in the manual (which can be found in the link above) from pages 18-45.

If you can not find the code that is appearing on your scan tool then you can find it by simply searching online for that code that appears.

Answer:	I can confirm that this adapter WILL read (I haven't tried to clear yet) ABS codes on Ford (2001 Ranger 4.0L), using FordSysFree or MotorDataOBD Free (both Android). ABS codes are in the Cxxxx range. Mine picked up, correctly, C0034 - Front Right Wheel Speed Sensor Failure. While other adapters may be able to read these codes with other Android Apps, this ELM327 BAFX adapter does capture ABS codes for Ford. That is the only one I can confirm. Yes, FORScan for PC should also pick up these codes with this adapter. I have not tested Torque PRO, but I don't believe it will read ABS codes with this adapter.

Sorry, NT301 obdii scanner is able to read and clear check engine information which is part of OBDII system, but it cannot work on non-OBDII systems(ABS/airbag/oil service light,ect.). OBD II Modes of Operation:

Here is a basic introduction to the OBD II communication protocol. Mode byte: The first byte in the stream is the mode number. There are 10 modes for diagnostic requests. The first byte in the response data bytes is this same number plus 64. For example, a mode 1 request would have the first data byte = 1, and the response would have the first data byte = 65. Here is a brief description of the modes:

• Mode 01 – Identifies the Powertrain information and shows current data available to the scan tool. This data includes: DTC set, status of on-board tests, and vehicle data such as engine RPM, temperatures, ignition advance, speed, air flow rates, and closed loop status for fuel system.
• Mode 02 – Displays Freeze Frame data. Same data as in mode 1,but it was captured and stored when a malfunction occurred and a DTC was set. Some of the PIDs for mode one are not implemented in this mode.
• Mode 03 – Displays the type of powertrain or emission related DTCs stored by a 5 digit code identifying the faults. There may be more than one response message if there are more trouble codes than will fit in the data bytes of the response message, or if there are more than one ECU computer responding.
• Mode 04 – Used to clear DTCs and Freeze Frame data. This clears all diagnostic trouble codes that may be set including freeze frame data and readiness monitors.
• Mode 05 – Displays oxygen sensor test results. This mode displays the oxygen sensor monitor screen and the test results gathered about the oxygen sensor. There are ten numbers available for diagnostics: 01) Rich-to-Lean O2 sensor threshold voltage. 02) Lean-to-Rich O2 sensor threshold voltage. 03) Low sensor voltage threshold for switch time measurement. 04) High sensor voltage threshold for switch time measurement. 05) Rich-to-Lean switch time in ms. 06) Lean-to-Rich switch time in ms. 07) Minimum voltage for test. 08) Maximum voltage for test. 09) Time between voltage transitions in ms.
• Mode 06 – Non-continuously Monitored Systems test results.There are typically a minimum value, a maximum value, and a current value for each non-continuous monitor. This data is optional, and it is defined by a given vehicle maker if it’s used.
• Mode 07 – A request for DTCs (pending) from Continuously Monitored Systems after a single driving cycle has been performed to determine if repair has fixed a problem. This is used by service technicians to verify repair was performed properly and after clearing diagnostic trouble codes.
• Mode 08 – This special Control Mode requests control of the on-board system, test, or component bi-directionally (where applicable). This mode is manufacturer specific.
• Mode 09 – Reports vehicle information. This information includes vehicle VIN number and calibration information stored in the vehicle ECUs.
• Mode 0A – Requests Emission-Related Diagnostic Trouble Codes with Permanent Status. This mode is required for all emissions-related DTCs.The presence of permanent DTCs at an inspection without the MIL illuminated is an indication that a proper repair was not verified by the on-board monitoring system.

When more than one vehicle control module is detected by the scan tool, you will be prompted to select the module where the data may be retrieved. The most often to be selected are the Power train Control Module [PCM] and Transmission Control Module [TCM].

CAUTION: Don’t connect or disconnect any test equipment with ignition on or engine running.

1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Locate the vehicle’s 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC).
3. Plug the scan tool cable connector into the vehicle’s DLC.
4. Turn the ignition on. Engine can be off or running.
5. Turn on the scan tool. Use the "UP/DOWN" scroll button to select OBDII/EOBD from the Main Screen.
6. Press the "OK" button to wait for the Menu to appear. A sequence of messages displaying the OBDII protocols will be observed on the display until the vehicle protocol is detected.
7. View a summary of system status (MIL status, DTC counts, Monitor status) on screen. Press [OK]

If the scan tool fails to communicate with the vehicle’s ECU (Engine Control Unit) more than three times, a “LINKING ERROR!” message shows up on the display.

• Verify that the ignition is ON;
• Check if the scan tool’s OBD II connector is securely connected to the vehicle’s DLC;
• Verify that the vehicle is OBD II compliant;
• Turn the ignition off and wait for about 10 seconds. Turn the ignition back to on and repeat the procedure.

If the “LINKING ERROR” message does not go away, then there might be problems for the scan tool to communicate with the vehicle. Contact your local distributor or the manufacturer’s Customer--Service department for assistance.

I/M Ready Test & I/M Readiness Hot Key:

The Ready Test can be used as a convenient readiness test tool by automotive technicians to determine if the tested vehicle is ready for an emission test. By visual and audible indication,you will learn a vehicle’s monitors readiness. Repairs to the emissions-control systems of a 1996 or newer vehicle cause the vehicle’s computer (ECU) memory to be cleared. The vehicle must go through a drive cycle to allow the ECU to perform a series of tests to ensure that the repair was successful, and before a state mandated emissions test can be conducted. But how will you know when it is ready? With this scan tool, you don’t have to drive around endlessly and continuously coming back to the repair shop for retest if all required tests by the ECU are completed. And you could also do a quick check of the vehicle to determine if it is ready to receive an emission test without the hassle of connecting your vehicle to the analyzer or having to use a complicated scan tool.In the following cases, this function is especially useful.

• You bought a used car and the check engine light had been cleared to mask potential problems.
• You disconnected the battery for tune-ups and other engine repairs, dead battery replacement, car radio installation and car alarm installation.
• You used a scan tool to clear the DTCs.
• Your car has been sent to repair.

I/M refers to Inspection and Maintenance that is legislated by the Government to meet federal clean-air standards. I/M Readiness indicates whether or not the various emissions-related systems on the vehicle are operating properly and are ready for Inspection and Maintenance testing.

The purpose of the I/M Readiness Monitor Status is to indicate which of the vehicle’s Monitors have run and completed their diagnosis and testing, and which ones have not yet run and completed testing and diagnosis of their designated sections of the vehicle’s emissions system.

The I/M Readiness Monitor Status function also can be used (after repair of a fault has been performed) to confirm that the repair has been performed correctly, and/or to check for Monitor Run Status.

Note: N/A means not available on this vehicle; INC means incomplete or not ready and OK means Completed or Monitor Ok.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT:

Power Supply: The power of the NL101 is provided via the vehicle’s Data Link Connector (DLC). Follow the steps below to power it up:

1. Find DLC on the Vehicle: The DLC is the connector where diagnostic code readers interface with the vehicle’s on-board computer and usually located in the driver’s cab. A plastic DLC cover may be found for some vehicles and you need to remove it before plugging the OBD II cable. If it cannot be found, refer to the vehicle’s service manual for the location.
2. Plug OBD II cable to the vehicle’s DLC.

• When an emission-related fault occurs, certain vehicle conditions are recorded by the on-board computer. This information is referred to as freeze frame data. Freeze Data is a snapshot of the operating conditions at the time of an emission-related fault.

Note: If DTCs were erased, Freeze Data may not be stored in vehicle memory depending on vehicle.

Location of the Data Link Connector (DLC): The DLC (Data Link Connector) is the standardized 16-cavity connector where diagnostic scan tools interface with the vehicle's on-board computer. The DLC is usually located 12 inches from the center of the instrument panel (dash), under or around the driver side for most vehicles. If Data Link Connector is not located under dashboard, a label should be there telling location. For some Asian and European vehicles, the DLC is located behind the ashtray and the ashtray must be removed to access the connector. If the DLC cannot be found, refer to the vehicle service manual for the location.

The DTC Lookup function is used to search for definitions of DTCs stored in the DTC library and for code breaker information.

1. From Main Screen (Figure 4.1), use the [UP] / [DOWN] scroll button and [RIGHT] / [LEFT] scroll button to select DTC Lookup and press the [OK] button.
2. From DTC Lookup screen,use the [RIGHT] / [LEFT] button to move to the desired character,use the [UP] / [DOWN] button to change selected digit/character and press the [OK] button to confirm.
3. View the DTC definition on screen. When DTC definition covers more than one screen,use the LEFT/RIGHT button or UP/DOWN button to view additional information on previous/next screens.

• Question: System halts when reading data stream. What is the reason? Answer: It may be caused by a slackened connector. Please turn off the NL101, firmly connect the connector, and switch on it again.
• Question: Screen of main unit flashes at engine ignition start. Answer: Caused by electromagnetic disturbance and this is normal phenomenon.
• Question: There is no response when communicating with on-board computer. Answer: Please confirm the proper voltage of power supply and check if the throttle has been closed, the transmission is in the neutral position, and the water is in proper temperature.
• Question: Why are there so many fault codes? Answer: Usually, it’s caused by poor connection or fault circuit grounding.

Answer:	The Maxiscan MS300 is also an Autel product. It is a legacy product that has been superseded by the Autel AutoLink AL301¹. As is customary for these entry-level devices, it only reads / reports the generic OBD II codes. To move up to manufacturer specific codes one must move up to the Autel AutoLink AL319². Answer:	Yes.It has an I/M Readiness mode that is able to show you the details of the readiness of each major emission monitor. There is even a button on the device that can select this directly without having to navigate through the menus.There is also a lamp on the device that indicates if any emission monitor is not ready.It is my understanding that the requirements for I/M readiness for each vehicle may differ from state to state.I had a problem with an air monitor coming ready after I identified, resolved, and cleared the underlying code. It took miles of specific type of driving to clear this monitor status (which cannot be cleared by the device.)When I returned to the inspection station I was informed that all monitors are not required to be ready to pass New York state inspection, and that my extra driving for this situation was unnecessary.

Answer:	It gives a text explanation of the code (eg. Nissan code P1135 = 'Intake Valve Timing Control Bank 2'). Beyond that, you're having to look online or in service manuals to determine what the message actually means and how to resolve it.
