12 best transmission flushes
A transmission flush is a maintenance procedure performed on a vehicle's automatic transmission to remove old transmission fluid, contaminants, and sludge and replace it with fresh transmission fluid. It is an essential part of routine maintenance to ensure the proper functioning and longevity of the transmission system. Here's what you need to know about transmission flushes:
Purpose: The primary purpose of a transmission flush is to remove old, worn-out transmission fluid that may contain contaminants and replace it with clean fluid. This helps maintain the transmission's efficiency and extends its lifespan.
Fluid Exchange: Unlike a simple transmission fluid change, which typically involves draining and refilling a portion of the fluid, a flush involves completely replacing the fluid in the transmission system. This is typically done using a specialized machine.
Machine-Based Process: A transmission flush is often performed using a dedicated machine that connects to the vehicle's transmission system. The machine pumps out the old fluid while simultaneously pumping in new fluid. This process ensures that most of the old fluid and contaminants are removed.
Benefits: Regular transmission flushes offer several benefits, including smoother shifting, improved transmission performance, reduced risk of overheating, and increased transmission life. It also helps prevent issues like slippage and rough shifting.
Frequency: The frequency of transmission flushes can vary depending on the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations. It is typically recommended every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, but it's essential to consult your vehicle's owner's manual or a professional mechanic for specific guidelines.
Professional Service: While it is possible to perform a transmission flush at home, it is generally recommended to have this procedure done by a qualified mechanic or service center. Professional technicians have the expertise and equipment to ensure the flush is performed correctly.
Fluid Selection: It's crucial to use the correct type of transmission fluid as specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Using the wrong fluid can lead to transmission damage.
Cost: The cost of a transmission flush can vary depending on the vehicle make and model, labor costs, and the type of transmission fluid used. It's a good idea to get quotes from different service providers.
Maintenance Package: Some automotive service centers offer maintenance packages that include transmission flushes along with other essential services like oil changes and brake inspections.
DIY Caution: If you decide to perform a transmission flush yourself, be sure to follow the vehicle manufacturer's guidelines and use the appropriate equipment. An improper flush can lead to transmission damage.
In summary, a transmission flush is a maintenance procedure that involves completely replacing old transmission fluid with new fluid to ensure the proper functioning of the transmission system. It is recommended at specific mileage intervals and is typically performed by automotive professionals using specialized equipment. Regular transmission flushes contribute to the overall health and longevity of a vehicle's transmission.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this product can be used for 07 Honda Pilot |
Answer: | Honda recommends an ATF change (drain and refill only, no flushing) every 30K miles. |
Question: | this product can be use on CVT |
Answer: | Yes formulated for most types of transmissions and cvts |
Question: | Can I use this with just a fluid change or do I have to do a complete flush |
Answer: | Remember....the torque converter has a LOT of fluid in it....so a normal "filter and fluid" change often only removes 30% of the fluid. I would want ALL of this out when I was done.Remember, a normal "filter and fluid" change leaves 70% of the fluid in the torque converter. I would want this all out. Check online and see if your converter has a drain plug. If not, look at the methods described to actually loosen a line to the cooler and drain/refill ALL of the fluid. My Grand Marquis had 13-14 quarts, and my GMC 1 ton truck had almost 19 quarts. A filter/fluid change on either one would only remove 4-5 quarts. I ran the motor and drained a line, as I added new fluid...when the color changed at the drain line, I knew ALL the fluid was out. |
Question: | How does this work |
Answer: | ANY petroleum or alcohol based fluid/solvent will deposit what old time mechanics called "varnish" on surfaces during long periods of use and heating. I am not a chemist, but I handle dozens of different automotive and wood finishing products/solvents all the time. Lacquer thinner will spotlessly clean a carburetor....mineral spirits will not. The additives that you put in your gas are in the same family as lacquer thinner....they remove deposits from petrol based products.NOW.....imagine a mechanism that has hundreds of valves and orifices that are machined to extremely close tolerances.....EXTREMELY close tolerances.....that mechanism operates at very high temperatures, from a cold start. THAT is your "automatic" transmission. A modern automatic transmission is a mechanical wonder, with components that require calibration, maintenance, and operation equal to a satellite....they are a marvel.Even a couple ten thousandths of buildup will alter their operation and performance. This product is a blend of solvents that is strong enough to remove those deposits....WHILE being safe for all the O-rings and seals. |

User questions & answers
Question: | So how does this work? do i use pour it in, and do i have to do a complete flush? or can i just drain the transmission pan and change the filter |
Answer: | Pour it in and make sure you put a few miles on the transmission, shifting through all the gears, don't forget reverse. At least 2 minutes in each gear. Than simply do a drain and fill or a full flush. Just note that if you choose the drain and fill, let the car sit overnight after cycling the lubeguard so all the junk knocked loose has a chance to fall into the pan. |
Question: | Can this product be used on a CVT transmission |
Answer: | I contacted Lubegard and they said that Yes you can use this on a CVT transmission |

User questions & answers
Question: | The 37 ton log splitter's hydraulic system uses aw 32 oil, okay to use? how much to use for a 12 gallon system |
Answer: | I can't give an actual amount but I dump a little in all my hydraulics, seems to help and never an issue. |
Question: | will this remove water |
Answer: | Sea Foam is a great product; there used to be just the original product, which was invented by a guy who owned a marina, and who worked on boat motors, which can reasonably be expected to have a lot of issues involving water contamination. I originally heard of the product from a friend who worked on garden tractor engines. He told me that, in his experience, Sea Foam was far superior to other lubricants. It could be used as a fuel stabilizer, such Sta-Bil, as you would use when putting your equipment into winter storage. He also told me that he had discovered that when dealing with an engine had seized up, he would put Sea Foam in with the oil, and manually turn the engine in the opposite direction that it would normally turn, and that would free up the engine. I have used Sea Foam ever since; I run it in the crankcases of my cars and all lawn equipment. I add it to my car's gas tank, and treat all the gasoline I have stored in gas cans, for use in my lawn equipment. And I never have any problems starting my tractors, or mowers in the spring. Because I think so highly of Sea Foam, I have tried several of the company's other products: Deep Creep, which is Sea Foam in an aerosol container, Trans Tune, which is used to dissolve varnish deposits in transmissions, clean and condition transmission fluid, and remove moisture, and is suitable for long term use. That is, you can use Trans Tune as a pre-service flush, or just leave it in your transmission, or other hydraulic equipment. I've had it in my '95 Lincoln's transmission for a number of years, now. I had originally intended to use it as a flush, drop the pan, empty the trans, and replace the gasket. My transmission guy advised me that since my car had over 100,000 miles on it, and the pan had never been off, to just leave the Trans Tune in. So that's what I have done. The Trans Tune addressed the rough shifting that caused me to try it in the first place, and has continued to protect my transmission ever since. It's been in the trans for a number of years. I believe Trans Tune, and the other Sea Foam products do what they say they will do. |
Question: | Should I use this in a new (2015) F-150 as a part of regular maintenance or wait till I notice "problems |
Answer: | I sure as hell wouldn't put this in a new (2015) transmission. Change the transmission fluid after maybe 10k miles, then every 40k (or 20k if you are towing a lot), and that is all you should ever need. |
Question: | Will adding seafoam TT-16 to my trans. fluid make for to much liquid volune |
Answer: | It is never a good idea to overfill an A/T, just siphon or drain an amount of trans fluid equal to the amount of Trans Tune your adding. If using as a filter change flush I add 1/2 can, drive for a few miles, then drop pan change fluid and filter, then add second half of can with proper amount of recommended fluid. I have followed that procedure for years on various makes and have had no problems. Hope this answer helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | do i have to cut the crimped end of the hose to get it to work |
Answer: | Should have a black rubber plug, not the bottom center one, either use the rubber plug or your finger to plug the left hole, not the right one, and mines did the job, I know this is a few years too late but hopefully helps someone else. no need to cut anything. I just received and used the 5.3l version, gluck! |
Question: | What and how do i clean out the pump for storage. Thanks |
Answer: | Current instructions say to rinse out reservoir, pump, adapter and tubes with "clean solvent or engine degreaser" and let dry thoroughly for storage. To empty reservoir remove main vacuum tube and pour liquid out that opening. Some users suggest also removing the threaded 'cap' on that opening as well, but that's not in the instructions. |
Question: | Can this product be used to extract gasoline |
Answer: | I’m a mechanic and I have used mine on all types of fluids. Still works great and for the price it’s a sweet deal. If you take notice, every garage around the country has one of these. They are pretty common among mechanics. I’ve seen 4-5 different brands. I’m cheap so I bought this one after I ran over my last one..:( I have used mine on: diesel, gasoline, brake fluid, gear oil, coolant, all types of engine oil, and transmission fluid. They are usually more expensive. So I’m pleased with the value this has. It’s common for people to put DEF exhaust fluid into Diesed fuel tanks, so I suck out the fuel with this. (After I get most out by jumping the fuel pump) |
Question: | Why can't I have this product shipped to California? Is it illegal for some reason |
Answer: | Because California is full of nut jobs. |
Product features
Includes 5 Ft. Flexible Suction Hose and (1) 41-Inch Dipstick Tube
Simply insert the O-Ring plug of the main suction tube into the reservoir adapter located on the reservoir cap.
After inserting the main suction tube into the reservoir adapter, insert the 41" dipstick tube into the 1/4" diameter connector on top of the reservoir (pictured). Ensure all of the tube connections are tight to prevent leakage.
Automatic Shutoff Valve Prevents Overflow with Flotation Assembly
Extract the used motor oil by pumping the evacuator handle several times to create a vacuum. Once the fluid begins to flow into the reservoir, continue to operate the pump until all the fluid has been drained from the engine crankcase.
When oil in the tank reaches the maximum level, the vacuum is designed to automatically release to prevent fluid overflow.
If the maximum fluid level is exceeded, the automatic shutoff valve will release and the vacuum pump mechanism will float to instantly stop vacuum suction and prevent spillage. The flotation halts all fluid suction.
Leak Proof Single-Piece Body Ensures Maximum Fluid Vacuum Power with No Mess
Our smart design features a one piece plastic body attached to a heavy duty base, and adapters with excellent spillproof fitment to ensure you never end up with oil or coolant on your shop floor.
OEMTOOLS vacuum pumps are also suitable for low viscosity fluids such as water or coolant. No matter the viscosity of the fluid or the pressure applied to the vacuum pump, OEMTOOLS' fluid evacuators are designed not to leak or spill.
Large Heavy Duty Hand Pump for Maximum Power Fluid Transfer
Our manual oil extractors will move as much fluid as fast as you can pump. The oversized heavy duty handle is built to last and will stand up to plenty of force. Simply pump until a vacuum is created and fluid begins to fill the reservoir.
When the system flush is completed, remove the main suction hose from the reservoir adapter. pour the used oil or transmission fluid from the reservoir into a suitable container, then dispose of the fluid in an appropriate manner.
Let OEMTOOLS help you get jobs done faster with one of our brilliantly designed vacuum pumps
Extracts most fluid types: engine oil, transmission fluid, gear oil, coolant, and power steering fluid. Also for use on boats and other kinds of watercraft as a marine oil changer.
Get even more use out of your new vacuum pump with our Manual Fluid Extractor Hose (pictured below) which converts the OEMTOOLS Manual Fluid Evacuators into vacuum brake or hydraulic clutch bleeders. Question: | Is this ok for a 1995 f-150 5.8 engine with a E 40D transmission |
Answer: | Probably. '95 units are usually good with this type of additive. However, I always check with my transmission builder before using any product. |
Question: | Which lubegard to use? red, black, universal....etc this is for 2007 toyota corolla lock-up solenoid issue |
Answer: | It is compatible, will it help ? Its worth a try. I would do a couple of poor mans flushes first, drain the pan & refill with fresh fluid, drive 200-500 miles & repeat until the fluid comes out looking nice & red, then refill & use the lubeguard, good luck! |
Question: | I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty 2.8 CRD which uses ATF+4 in its RFE545 transmission. Can I use this in my transmission |
Answer: | I would ask a local transmission shop. I have used this in my Contour, CRV and Civic. It seems that a lot of transmission shops use this on rebuilts to avoid failures under warranty. I didn't over think it with my Honda vehicles since such a small amount is added to the transmission. I would not only check with some transmission shops, I would also check some of the blogs that are relative to your vehicle. |
Question: | work on transmission dsg Jetta mk5 Gli |
Answer: | change the valve body. |

Question: | Will this work on European cars? Preferable on oil removal of a 2006 Audi A4 with the 2.0T motor |
Answer: | It should I use it with a 2013 Mercedes E 350. And it is not model specific. As Lind as the hose fits into dip stick tube it will work. The hose is made to fit in several different size tubes. |
Question: | Will gas hurt this |
Answer: | Yes it will damage the evacuator reservoir and turn the fittings gummy over time. We had two separate evacuators at my shop- one for oil and the old one my boss destroyed was only to be used for gas. It basically collapsed the tank. It didn’t leak, but looked horrible and it still worked fine. Also, I did not get blown up. Any mechanic will tell you, a customers fuel pump never goes out with a 1/4 tank of gas in the car. Usually, its full or 3/4 of the way full. 20-30 gallons in the tank makes removing the tank a little difficult without sucking some gas out first. Advice: buy two, or immediately transfer gas to a proper storage container and clean out the evacuator and fittings. |
Question: | MB owner, synthetic oil: some reviews indicate the unit is not compatible with synthetic oils? Has the unit been upgraded/problem solved |
Answer: | I have 2 Mercedes, both use Mobil 1 as called for and I use the Mityvac on both no problem. There are a few things you need to do so this works. 1) call Mityvac and ask for the longer tubes. I could not reach the bottom of my pan with the short tubes unless I lifted the Mityvac off the floor. AWKWARD!! They are in St Louis MO and are really nice. Explain the problem and they will take care of you.2) WARM UP YOUR CAR FIRST!!! a 3 minute trip around the block and your oil is warm enough to flow easily, but not too hot that it will burn you!3) remove the FILTER! cover hole with a rag, not stuff it in, cover to prevent debris from falling in. 4) PUMP 8-10x to get the oil moving. Empty 1/2 way up you will need the room! 8 quarts in my MBZ!5) drain and have patience it takes 5-8 minutes to get it all out.6) Wipe out filter and oil fill area, reassemble filter, pour new oil in filter housing, reinstall filter. I Usually put in 7 1/2 quarts, run for 3 min, let sit for 5 and check level/add oil as necessary. I hope this helps! |
Question: | Has anyone used it to do a complete transmission flush, and if so how |
Answer: | The idea of using Mityvac is to avoid mess. Yes I used it for complete flush, replaced 3.8 qt of fluid four times within 100 miles, fluid is bright pink even after 800 miles and not a single drop on the floor. Have patience, this thing will do the trick. Alternatively you can disconnect fluid outgoing line to trans, start the car wait for 1/4 of your tranny fluid to be collected, stop the car, replace the fluid with new, repeat 4 times and you are done, but there may be spills and you don't require a MityVac, it just does your job easy and clean. Pick your choice. |
