14 best air shocks
Air shocks, also known as air suspension shocks or air struts, are a type of suspension component used in automotive vehicles to provide a smoother ride, improved handling, and the ability to adjust the vehicle's ride height. Here's what you need to know about air shocks:
Function: Air shocks are part of a vehicle's suspension system and serve two main functions:
- Shock Absorption: Like traditional shock absorbers, air shocks dampen and control the movement of the vehicle's suspension. They help absorb bumps and vibrations from the road, providing a comfortable ride.
- Adjustable Ride Height: One of the primary advantages of air shocks is their ability to adjust the ride height of the vehicle.By adjusting the air pressure in the shocks, you can raise or lower the vehicle, improving clearance, handling, and ride comfort.
Components: Air shocks consist of several key components:
- Air Spring: This is the inflatable part of the shock that replaces traditional coil springs. Air springs are made of durable rubber or similar materials and are inflated with compressed air.
- Shock Absorber: Air shocks also include a shock absorber component that controls the motion of the suspension.
- Air Compressor: In many air suspension systems, there is an onboard air compressor that maintains the air pressure in the shocks. Some systems may also have an external air source.
Adjustability: The ability to adjust the ride height of the vehicle is a significant advantage of air shocks. This feature is especially beneficial for vehicles used in towing, off-roading, or carrying heavy loads. By increasing air pressure, you can raise the vehicle to provide more ground clearance. Conversely, reducing air pressure lowers the vehicle for improved aerodynamics and handling.
Comfort and Handling: Air shocks can enhance both ride comfort and handling characteristics. They provide a smoother ride by adjusting to road conditions and load, and they can be fine-tuned to meet the driver's preferences.
Maintenance: Air shocks require regular maintenance to ensure they function properly. This includes checking for leaks in the air springs, maintaining the correct air pressure, and inspecting other components of the air suspension system.
Cost: Air shocks and air suspension systems are typically more expensive to install and maintain compared to traditional coil spring suspensions. However, many drivers find the benefits, such as improved ride quality and adjustability, to be worth the investment.
Common Uses: Air shocks are commonly found in luxury vehicles, SUVs, trucks, and certain performance cars. They are also used in commercial vehicles and RVs for load leveling and improved ride comfort.
In summary, air shocks are a key component of an air suspension system in vehicles. They offer the advantages of adjustable ride height, improved ride comfort, and enhanced handling. However, they require regular maintenance and can be more expensive to install and maintain than traditional suspension systems.

User questions & answers
Question: | These fit a 2019 street glide |
Answer: | Not that bad. Just drive slowly. The problem is with incorrect camber. Take car to a trusted shop. I was taken by Pep Boys. They left the camber the way I brought in and adjusted only toe-in. Camber was overly positive and so I took it to another Pepboys shop with specific camber adjustments request. They pretended they did it, and so nothing was done, and the steering is off. Before installing the struts you should buy a camber gauge. It costs between $10 and $14. It has bubbles and markings to let you adjust camber to the old setting. It has a magnet to let you attach it to the brake disc. I didn’t know about it before changing the struts hence trouble with Pepboys. There are demonstrations on YouTube. |
Question: | What is the max diameter? Planning on using on my golf cart |
Answer: | This fits my 2001 Buick so i doubt it fits a Kia Forte. Good strut though when you find the one that fits. Type auto parts in the search bar and then select your make, model, and year vehicle to find what parts fit , make sure your verify the fit through the manufacturer before ordering though because Amazon it not always correct on what parts fit what vehicles. Hope that helps. |
Question: | Can you put air in these shocks individually to level a vehicle or do you have to inflate both shocks at the same time |
Answer: | Both |
Question: | Fit 2000 Chevy Silverado |
Answer: | I don't know about KYB, but these struts raised the front of my about 3 inches and is causing some safety issues. I won't buy these again. |
