14 best automotive replacement gaskets
Automotive replacement gaskets are crucial components used in vehicles to create a secure and leak-free seal between two or more mechanical parts. These gaskets are essential for maintaining the integrity of various automotive systems. Here is what you should know about them:
Function: Gaskets serve as seals between two mating surfaces in an engine or other automotive systems. They prevent leaks of fluids or gases, such as oil, coolant, exhaust gases, and air, ensuring the components work efficiently and safely.
Materials: Automotive gaskets are made from a variety of materials, including rubber, cork, paper, metal, and composite materials. The choice of material depends on the specific application and the type of seal required. For example, head gaskets in engines often consist of multi-layered steel, while valve cover gaskets may be made from rubber or cork.
Types of Gaskets: There are various types of gaskets used in automobiles, including:
- Cylinder Head Gaskets: These are placed between the engine block and the cylinder head, sealing the combustion chamber to prevent leaks.
- Intake and Exhaust Gaskets: These seal the connections between the intake manifold, exhaust manifold, and the engine, preventing exhaust or intake leaks.
- Valve Cover Gaskets: These are used to seal the valve covers, protecting the engine from oil leaks.
- Oil Pan Gaskets: They provide a seal between the oil pan and the engine block to prevent oil leaks.
- Exhaust Gaskets: These are used in the exhaust system to ensure a tight seal at joints, reducing noise and preventing exhaust leaks.
- Water Pump Gaskets: These seals the water pump to the engine, preventing coolant leaks.
Replacement: Gaskets are subject to wear and tear over time due to temperature fluctuations, pressure, and chemical exposure. When a gasket fails, it's important to replace it promptly to prevent leaks that can lead to engine damage or reduced performance. When replacing gaskets, it's crucial to choose the correct gasket type and material for the specific application.
Installation: Proper installation of gaskets is essential to ensure a leak-free seal. This involves cleaning mating surfaces, applying gasket sealant (if required), and following the manufacturer's torque specifications for the fasteners to ensure the gasket is compressed evenly.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as checking for leaks and inspecting gaskets during routine service, can help identify issues early and prevent more extensive damage to the vehicle.
In summary, automotive replacement gaskets are essential components used in vehicles to create seals between various components, preventing leaks and maintaining the integrity of automotive systems. Choosing the right gasket type and material, along with proper installation and maintenance, is crucial for the reliable and leak-free operation of a vehicle.

What is an Intake Manifold Gasket?
Designed to seal the intake manifold to the engine cylinder head(s), the intake manifold gasket helps ensure the engine gets the right mix of air and fuel to the cylinders. The gaskets may also seal coolant passages from the manifold to the head(s). Featuring proprietary molded rubber over an aluminized steel carrier which resists high heat, application-specific Fel-Pro PermaDryPlus intake manifold gaskets are easier to install with locating tabs to assure proper alignment and include torque limiters to help eliminate overtightening, gasket splitting and extruding.
Symptoms of a Bad Intake Manifold Gasket
With repeated exposure to heat cycles, dirt and debris and lack of cooling system maintenance, the intake manifold gasket can become brittle and crack, leading to gasket failure. Symptoms of a failing intake manifold gasket include:
Coolant internal leaks may also cause:
- Rough running/engine misfire
- White smoke from the tailpipe
- Coolant loss resulting in engine overheating
- Coolant loss into the engine oiling system may result in contaminating engine oil
- Green, red, yellow, or blue leaks under vehicle
- A sweet smell from under the hood with no visible signs of leakage on the ground
Why Do Intake Manifold Gaskets Fail?
Heat and age are the enemies of the intake manifold gasket. If the engine overheats, the extra heat can stress the gaskets, over-compressing them and the gasket material may not recover to provide adequate sealing. Additionally, like many parts on your vehicle, the normal wear and tear of daily driving can cause the intake manifold gasket to fail. In some cases, the engine castings may be made of different materials that have different expansion rates which scrub the gaskets. At the automotive repair shop, technicians use a smoke machine to test for intake manifold gasket leaks at the intake manifold runner areas. A check engine light with lean engine codes and/or engine misfire codes are other signs of a failed intake gasket.

Every Part for the Repair
Fel-Pro gasket sets include every part needed for the repair unless otherwise noted
What is a Head Gasket?
One of the most critical gaskets in your engine, the head gasket is designed to seal the cylinders to ensure maximum compression and prevent coolant and engine oil from leaking into the cylinders. The head gasket withstands the stresses of the two surfaces expanding, shrinking, warping and rubbing while sealing in coolant and engine oil running through casting ports.
Signs of a Blown/Failing Head Gasket
Because the cylinder head gasket seals coolant passages, a blown or failing head gasket will allow coolant to enter the cylinders. Coolant in the cylinders can cause:
- White smoke coming from tailpipe
- Bubbling in radiator and coolant reservoir
- Milky white coloration in oil
- Engine overheating
- Loss of coolant with no external signs of leakage
- Oil and coolant streaming down head gasket
- Loss of engine power and leakage between cylinders
- Sweet smell from the exhaust or under hood area
How to Prepare Engine Surface
Before installing a new head gasket, surface conditions of the engine block and cylinder head(s) must be inspected and refinished if they are out of spec. In some cases, damaged castings may need to be replaced. Different gaskets require different surface finishes, so the surface finish must be matched to the type of gasket that is required for the application. Fel-Pro gaskets are designed specifically to accommodate the surface finish requirements for each application. To determine surface finish requirements, consult the OEM repair manual. Checking the cylinder head surface finish and flatness is an important step to take before installing a head gasket. Surface finish can be checked using a surface finish comparator or a profilometer.
Which Direction to Install a Fel-Pro Head Gasket
Some gaskets are asymmetric, and the correct orientation can be visually distinguished. Most Fel-Pro head gaskets have directional markings to help install them correctly when gasket orientation is critical to the installation. In some cases, head gaskets won’t have any directional indicators on them. In these cases, it does not matter which direction the gasket is installed. If it were crucial, it would be marked.
- FRONT: The front of the engine is the end where the drive belts are located
- RIGHT and LEFT: The right and left are determined from the driver's perspective
- TOP or THIS SIDE UP: Gaskets should be facing you once it's installed
- UP: Found on Subaru engines which have a horizontally exposed cylinders and the edge should be kept toward the top of the engine block

What is a Timing Cover Gasket?
Designed to seal the timing cover to engine block, the oil pan, and in some cases to the engine’s cylinder head(s) and/or valve covers, the timing cover gasket prevents engine oil and coolant from leaking out. The timing cover gasket withstands the stresses of the two surfaces expanding, contracting, warping, and rubbing while sealing in engine oil and coolant. Some applications may have the oil pump in the timing cover so the gasket will be required to seal high-pressure oil as well. Fel-Pro timing cover gasket sets include application-specific technologies such as PermaDryPlus or Blue Stripe to help ensure a superior seal.
Symptoms of a Bad Timing Cover Gasket
With repeated exposure to heat, dirt and debris, expansion and contraction and lack of engine fluid maintenance, the timing cover gasket can become brittle, crack, shear away or suffer from compression set leading to gasket failure. The gasket material may split and leak in older applications. Symptoms of a failing timing cover gasket include:
- Engine oil or coolant stains on the ground (front center of engine)
- Engine low on oil
- Low coolant levels resulting in engine overheating
- Engine oil or coolant on the engine drive belts
- Crankcase oil contamination from coolant leakage (in some cases)
Checking for Timing Cover Leaks
If there is an abundance of dirt and grime around the timing cover, cylinder head area or engine block, use some degreaser to clean the area so you can see the bare metal near the timing cover, cylinder head or engine block joint. Check the area after running the engine for a bit and you’ll be able to see if the timing cover gasket is leaking.
Why Do Timing Cover Gaskets Fail?
There are several reasons on why timing cover gaskets fail. As timing covers are made from stamped steel or cast aluminum, the engine block may be made of cast iron or aluminum. These differences net different expansion and contraction rates, which can cause a shearing effect and lead to failure. Other reasons timing cover gaskets may fail include:
- Disturbance of the timing cover gasket seal during water pump replacement
- Sealing surface between timing cover and/or engine block surfaces is no longer flat due to warping
- Excessive over-tightening of timing cover fasteners may crush the gasket and lead to leakage
- Poor engine maintenance habits may result in material degradation
How to Install Fel-Pro Gaskets – Clean and Dry
Fel-Pro timing cover gaskets are designed so that no additional sealers are needed. Fel-Pro's premium materials compensate for surface imperfections and provide the proper amount of torque retention. Always consult the product instructions (if applicable) for sealing requirements prior to installation. Additional installation tips include:
- A two-step torque-up process is recommended especially on large timing covers
- Apply sealer to bolts entering water passage areas
- Install the timing cover gasket onto clean and dry surfaces; a small amount of RTV may be needed at corners, T-joints or stepped areas
- Cleaning discs are not recommended for gasket removal especially on aluminum castings
- Damaged cover sealing surfaces may require repair or replacement of the timing cover

Easier Installation
Fel-Pro PermaDryPlus applications feature a one-piece construction that is easier to install than multi-piece assemblies.
Installation Aid
SnapUps aid in holding the gasket in place for easier installation and allow for quick bolt tightening available with PermaDryPlus and select PermaDry sets.
Every Part for the Repair
Fel-Pro gasket sets include every part needed for the repair unless otherwise noted.
The job of the oil pan gasket is to prevent motor oil from leaking out of the oil pan. Sealing the oil pan to the bottom of the engine, the oil pan gasket must withstand the stresses of the two surfaces expanding, shrinking and rubbing while sealing in motor oil. Fel-Pro’s oil pan gaskets feature application-specific torque limiters help eliminate overtightening, gasket splitting and extruding and proprietary sealing solutions to help eliminate problematic leak paths. To make for an easier installation, PermaDryPlus oil pan gaskets feature a one-piece construction which helps reduce potential for installation errors.
Symptoms of a Bad Oil Pan Gasket
Oil pans are typically made of lightweight aluminum, stamped steel or an alloy. With the repeated heating and cooling cycles of the engine, the gasket will relax over time and no longer provide a seal. Lack of maintenance will also degrade sealing materials. Overtightening the oil pan fasteners may crush the gasket and damage the oil pan gaskets creating further leakage. Over time, the oil pan gasket can fail from the stress of the engine heating and cooling during normal operation. The oil pan gasket can become brittle and crack, leading to gasket failure. Symptoms of a failing oil pan gasket include:
- Oil leaks under vehicle
- Low oil level
- Smoke coming from engine
Premium Alternative to OE
Some OE applications use RTV in place of an oil pan gasket. Fel-Pro offers a gasket for these applications that is a premium alternative to RTV. The Fel-Pro gasket allows for immediate sealing of the oil pan, no waiting for the RTV to cure or smearing the RTV during a difficult installation.
SnapUps make Installation Easier
Installing an oil pan gasket with the engine in the vehicle can be difficult. Fel-Pro SnapUps, featured in PermaDryPlus and select PermaDry oil pan gasket sets, are an innovative way to speed up oil pan gasket replacement. Simply thread the SnapUps into the block where the oil pan bolts go, slide the oil pan gasket onto the SnapUps, followed by the pan. Once the pan is secure with the pan’s fasteners, the SnapUps are easily removed.
How to Install Fel-Pro Gaskets – Clean and Dry
Fel-Pro oil pan gaskets are designed so that no additional sealers are needed. Fel-Pro's premium materials compensate for surface imperfections and provide the proper amount of torque retention. Older applications using multi-piece oil pan gaskets will require some adhesive to hold the gaskets in place during the installation. Some oil pan gaskets may require the use of RTV at front and rear corners of the engine such as timing cover and rear main bearing journals, as well as joints where the timing cover and rear main bearing retainer meet the engine block. Always consult the product instructions (where applicable) for sealing requirements prior to installation and follow manufacturer torque and torque sequence instructions.

How to Install Fel-Pro Gaskets – Clean and Dry
Fel-Pro intake manifold gaskets are designed so that no additional sealers are needed. Fel-Pro's premium materials compensate for surface imperfections and provide the proper amount of torque retention. Always consult the product instructions (where applicable) for sealing requirements prior to installation.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this fit my 1998 jeep grand Cherokee |
Answer: | If it's the standard inline 4.0 6 cylinder, it should. I'm no expert, I just look to see if it shows that it "fits my vehicle" when I do the search. |
Question: | Will this fit a 2005 Jeep Wrangler 4.0 6cyl |
Answer: | It fit in my 01 4.0 liter 6cyl. They’re the same engines, so yes. It will fit. |
Question: | This part & "mahle original vs50266 engine valve cover gasket set" fit 99 jeep cherokee, 4l, 6cy, 4wd, they look different, which to choose |
Answer: | This is the one I bought for my 01 cherokee 4.0 and it fit perfectly. Your 99 4.0 should be the same. |
Question: | Would like to replace valve cover myself on my 96 gc il6. videos online don't mention grommets and elbow. what are they and do i need them |
Answer: | On my 02 jeep wrangled 6cyc. They are on top of the valve cover. I would replace them. They dry rot over the years. Easier to replace if you have the valve cover off. It would be easy to drop a piece down in your engine if they are dry rotted. They will crumble when removed. The elbow and grommets are sold separately. I found my on Amazon. I also had to buy the hose on the front one. It had dry rotted also. They are not expensive. Hope the help. |

Valve Cover Gaskets
Leaks from valve covers may be problematic. These not only cause unsightly stains but may lead to serious problems if not repaired. That’s why Fel-Pro designs valve cover gaskets specifically for the repair environment to help seal imperfect surfaces. Proprietary materials and proven technologies like PermaDry and PermaDryPlus help ensure a reliable seal on even the most troublesome applications.
Designed for the Repair Environment
Fel-Pro gaskets are engineered and manufactured specifically for the repair environment to help seal imperfect sealing surfaces.

Real-World Tested
Fel-Pro parts are tested and validated on-vehicle to ensure optimal performance on the road.
Every Part for the Repair
Fel-Pro gasket sets include every part needed for the repair unless otherwise noted.
Designed to seal the valve cover/cam cover to the top of the engine cylinder head, the valve cover gasket prevents motor oil from leaking out of the joint. The valve cover gasket withstands the stresses of the two surfaces expanding, shrinking, warping and rubbing while sealing in engine oil. Fel-Pro PermaDry and PermaDryPlus valve cover gaskets often include application-specific technologies to prevent overtightening and proprietary sealing solutions.
Symptoms of a Bad Valve Cover Gasket
With repeated exposure to heat, dirt and debris, the valve cover gasket can become brittle, crack, and suffer from compression set leading to gasket failure. The gasket material may become saturated and leak in older applications. Symptoms of a failing valve cover gasket include:
- Dirty valve cover – evidence of leaking oil
- Engine low on oil
- Burnt oil smell (leakage onto exhaust manifolds)
- Rough running engine/misfires (leaking spark plug tube seals)
- Engine oil stains on the ground
Checking for Valve Cover Leaks
If there is an abundance of dirt and grime around the valve cover/cylinder head area, use some degreaser to clean the area so you can see the bare metal near the valve cover/cylinder head joint. Check the area after running the engine for a bit and you’ll be able to see if the valve cover is leaking.
Why Do Valve Cover Gaskets Fail?
Valve covers are typically made of stamped steel, lightweight aluminum or magnesium and may warp over time, so the sealing surface that mates with the cylinder head is no longer flat, creating oil leaks. The lightweight material can be deformed by excessive torque on the fasteners holding it in place. Overtightening the valve cover fasteners may crush the gasket and damage the valve cover creating further leakage. Rubber gaskets may develop a compression set over time and will no longer be able to effectively seal the joint between the cover and head. Older applications using cork-rubber gaskets may develop compression set or become saturated over time again leaking onto the cylinder heads.
How to Install Fel-Pro Gaskets – Clean and Dry
Fel-Pro valve cover gaskets are designed specifically for the repair environment to help seal imperfect sealing surfaces and no additional sealers are needed. Fel-Pro's premium materials compensate for surface imperfections and provide the proper amount of torque retention. Some valve cover installations may require the use of RTV at cam joint corners (90-degree corners) or where there are other castings (intake manifold, cam plugs) that meet the valve cover. Always consult the product instructions (where applicable) for sealing requirements prior to installation. Other installation tips include:
- Check valve cover for straightness before installing.
- Push Press-in-Place (PIP) gaskets straight down into the groove. Don’t push and slide your fingers along the gasket, you’ll end up with “leftover” gasket material.
- Always replace rubber grommets (if present) to ensure proper loading and sealing of the valve cover.
