Answer: The instructions indicate to insert the green filter which is the carbon filter on the inlet side (on the left). Unfortunately, I agree this is correct! I initially agreed with the plumbers and a couple of others that this did no make sense as normally you want to pre-filter for a carbon filter. However, I then realized that if the carbon filter were placed 2nd, carbon particles could then end up plugging the expensive reverse osmosis filter. So, one of the purposes of the 2nd filter is to protect the reverse osmosis filters. This may be why newer models have 3 filters. Stage 1 coarse filter, stage 2 carbon, stage 3 fine filter.

Answer: These filters are dry packed and I don't remember ever seeing an expiration date. The suggestion is that they be changed after six months of use. our water is from wells and has all ready gone through cleaning and filtering for safety. The filter improves the taste and the sediment filter is always a little grey when I change them. I do change about every 6 months. Be sure to get the recommended lubricant for the rings. I used vaseline for a couple of years and the rubber rings grew so long that they were unusable and I had to replace them.
