13 best exhaust manifold coating
Exhaust manifold coating is a process applied to the exhaust manifold of a vehicle, primarily for performance and durability purposes. The exhaust manifold is a critical component of the vehicle's exhaust system, responsible for collecting exhaust gases from the engine's cylinders and directing them into the exhaust pipe. Here's what you need to know about exhaust manifold coating:
Purpose of Coating:
- The primary purpose of coating the exhaust manifold is to improve its performance and longevity. This is achieved through various types of coatings that provide several benefits.
Heat Insulation:
- One common type of coating applied to exhaust manifolds is a heat-resistant, insulating coating. This coating helps in retaining heat within the exhaust manifold, allowing exhaust gases to maintain higher temperatures as they exit the engine. This can improve exhaust flow and reduce exhaust gas cooling, which can be beneficial for engine performance.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Exhaust manifolds are exposed to high-temperature exhaust gases and can be prone to corrosion over time. Coating the manifold with a corrosion-resistant material helps extend its lifespan and prevents rust and deterioration.
Reduced Heat Transfer:
- Coatings on exhaust manifolds can also reduce heat transfer to other engine components, such as nearby sensors or wiring. This can help protect sensitive engine parts from excessive heat and potential damage.
Improved Performance:
- By retaining heat within the exhaust manifold and optimizing exhaust gas flow, coated manifolds can contribute to improved engine performance. This may result in enhanced horsepower and torque, as well as potentially better fuel efficiency.
Types of Coatings:
- There are various types of coatings used on exhaust manifolds, including ceramic coatings, thermal barrier coatings, and high-temperature paints. Each type has its specific benefits and applications.
Professional Application:
- Coating an exhaust manifold is typically done by professionals or specialized shops with the necessary equipment and expertise. The manifold must be properly cleaned and prepared before applying the coating to ensure its effectiveness.
Aftermarket Options:
- Some automotive enthusiasts and performance-oriented drivers choose to have their exhaust manifolds coated as an aftermarket modification. This can be part of a broader effort to improve engine performance and overall vehicle efficiency.
In summary, exhaust manifold coating is a process that involves applying specialized coatings to the exhaust manifold of a vehicle. This coating serves to improve heat insulation, corrosion resistance, and overall performance, making it a popular choice among automotive enthusiasts and those looking to enhance their vehicle's durability and efficiency. Properly coated exhaust manifolds can contribute to better engine performance and a longer lifespan for this critical component of the exhaust system.

Answer: | I have a 2015 Q50 hybrid Sport and I have the same problem, rust all over the exhaust system, and this was a California car. I am going to try to use Rust-Oleum rust reformer which turns rust black and then you can paint over it. I want to try it in a few spots and see how well it holds up to the heat of the exhaust system and if it looks good after week or so I'm going to go ahead and paint over the Rust-Oleum rust reformer with this product. I will post an update hear when available. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it need a primer for bad chrome exhaust headers on a motorcycle |
Answer: | I didnt use primer because I I bought a wrecked (Bassani RR) pipe and just needed to cover the damage. Rust has started to show through after a year, so I used CLR and touched it up. If I did it again I would sand better and use VHT Flame Proof primer, ceramic, and clear. VHT Flame Proof withstands higher temps. But I wasn't painting chrome... you'll need all the help you can get (sanding, primer) for it to stick. |

Question: | Will this adhere to chrome motorcycle exhaust pipes |
Answer: | No! will not stick to chrome..best bet is a Jet Hot Coating from a powder coater.. This stuff does not hold up well under high heat conditions, will flake off at the hot bends of pipes |
Question: | For inside tubing on exaust manifold, is primer application sufficient for protection without , color, VHT paint coatings |
Answer: | I think it is. I have used this primer ONLY on the exhaust of one of our cars. Curing is tricky. Have to follow istructions on the primer can. |
Question: | Can I use this on a firepit to prevent rust |
Answer: | Yes but any paint will do that as long as you clean the rust off . All your doing is keeping the water and air from getting to the raw metal . The high tempPaint has to be bake in an oven to 600*F |
Question: | can this be used for arts and crafts to and not just cars |
Answer: | I don't see why you couldn't use this for other applications but if your not going to be heating your crafts to over 1000* why would you need a high heat clear coat. |

Question: | Do this come with the 8 bolts as well |
Answer: | No it don't. It only comes with with the 2 for the y pipe and a gasket |
Question: | Gasket.. generic but felpro says "shiny" to manifold which if true with this one would be impossible with gasket provided...How Did You Install |
Answer: | Not sure what you mean by "Shiny to manifold". I can tell you that the manifold they sent was about a half-inch longer at the point it connects to the tailpipe so I could not even use it. The holes lined-up but the end made it impossible toconnect to the tailpipe. Returned the manifold for a refund and ended-up having to use my old manifold. My manifold was not cracked... but the bolts had snapped-off. Was able to use the gasket they sent. I have an 2004 Dodge Durango... 4.7 RWD. |
Question: | is this for the right side or the left side of the engine |
Answer: | 674-909 is for the left driver's side. |

Why Do Original Exhaust Manifolds Fail?
Exhaust manifolds carry exhaust gases from the engine to the exhaust system, and therefore have to withstand extreme temperatures. This will wear on any part, but poor design and inferior materials will cause these parts to fail faster.
As exahust manifolds wear out, they can crack and leak. As a result, the engine may become noisier, vehicle performance may suffer, and other parts may start failing as well if exposed to intense heat escaping from the cracked manifold.
Why Are Dorman Exhaust Manifolds Better?
- High-quality metal construction protects against warping or cracking.
- Leak-resistant designs provide long-lasting performance.
- Detailed inspections ensure product standards.

The DEI Motorcycle Exhaust Pipe Wrap Kit is a simple and effective way to control heat, protect against serious leg burns and improve performance. DEI Pipe Wrap prevents burns, improves exhause flow for better performance, increases horsepower, and protects against abrasions, hot oil spills, road grime, and more. The Kit contains everything needed to wrap a set of pipes all in one convenient package. Each kit includes two 2" x 15 ft rolls of exhaust wrap, eight 8" stainless steel locking ties, and four 14" stainless steel locking ties to secure wrap, and Hi-Temp silicone coating spray that penetrates, seals, protects and preserves wrap. A proprietary coating is applied to all DEI wraps to act as a bonding agent and to increase durability levels under extreme heat. Note about Titanium Exhaust Systems: DEI does NOT recommend wrapping Titanium exhausts. The alloys used in the production of titanium exhaust systems tend to be thin and are designed to dissipate heat quickly. By wrapping the exhaust, the additional heat can make the titanium alloy turn brittle and prone to premature cracking. DEI recommends using alternatives such as their flexible heat shields when seeking to reduce the heat on titanium exhaust systems.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this only for motorcycle exhaust or would it work on my 66 mustang. I need it just to cover part of the pipe which is near the gas tank |
Answer: | It should work for a mold. But if make repeated forms in the mold you will need to teapply at certain intervals. And material not be above 1500 degrees. |
Question: | what the wrap made of, is this heat or fire proof |
Answer: | Yes it can it will withstand temps up to I believe 1500 degrees but it depends as to how close you get to actual exhaust head. I think you should be fine using this on exhaust pipes with no problems but I do recommend at least two to three coats. Hope this helps good luck. |
Question: | Does the silicone get on clothing after it is dried then heated |
Answer: | This would not work as insulation as it is only paint. It is a paint that maintains its integrity in high heat environments . |
Question: | Is the wrap black or titanium |
Answer: | I bought the 25 gallon atv spraying system from tractor supply. It came with this tank. It was not extra. I had to return it because one of the connections failed and tractor supply could not supply a new 25 gallon tank. So I bought the 15 gallon tank on Amazon and it also came with this small tank in the box as a package deal. It was not an extra item either time period |
