14 best automotive clear coat spray
Automotive clear coat spray is a crucial component of the automotive painting process. It is related to body paint, paints and primers, and is commonly used in the automotive industry to achieve a durable and glossy finish on vehicles. Here is what you need to know about automotive clear coat spray:
Purpose: Automotive clear coat spray is applied over the base coat of paint to provide protection, depth, and a glossy finish to the vehicle's surface. It acts as a clear, transparent layer that enhances the appearance of the paint underneath.
Protection: One of its primary functions is to protect the underlying paint from environmental factors such as UV rays, weather, pollutants, and road debris. It helps prevent the base coat from fading, peeling, or chipping over time.
Enhanced Appearance: Clear coat spray adds depth and gloss to the paint job, giving the vehicle a smooth and shiny finish. This glossy appearance is often referred to as the "wet look."
Types: There are different types of automotive clear coat sprays available, including solvent-based and water-based options. Solvent-based clear coats are known for their durability, while water-based clear coats are more environmentally friendly.
Application: Clear coat spray is typically applied using a spray gun or aerosol can. It requires careful preparation, including sanding and cleaning the surface, before application. Multiple layers may be applied to achieve the desired finish.
Curing: After application, the clear coat needs time to cure and harden. This can take several hours to several days, depending on the specific product and environmental conditions. Proper curing is essential for a durable finish.
Finishing: Once the clear coat has cured, it can be further polished and buffed to achieve a high-gloss finish. This step is crucial for achieving a showroom-quality appearance.
Repair: In the event of damage or imperfections in the clear coat, it can be repaired through sanding and reapplication. This process may be necessary to maintain the vehicle's appearance over time.
Customization: Automotive clear coat sprays come in different levels of gloss, from matte to high-gloss. This allows for customization based on the desired look for the vehicle.
Maintenance: To preserve the appearance and protective qualities of the clear coat, regular maintenance, including washing and waxing, is recommended. Waxing helps maintain the gloss and provides an additional layer of protection.
In summary, automotive clear coat spray is an essential component of the automotive painting process. It provides protection, gloss, and depth to the vehicle's paint job while safeguarding it from environmental factors. Choosing the right clear coat and applying it correctly are key factors in achieving a long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing finish on an automobile.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this paint match a 1999 civic hatchback oem silver |
Answer: | The only way to be 100% sure is look up the paint code on the driver's side door jamb, as in: http://www.automotivetouchup.com/paint-codes/honda.htm |
Question: | How do you select the paint color to match your vehicle |
Answer: | Get the paint code from the car VIN tag (usually under the hood or inside driver door, and go to the Duplicolor website and look up by application. |
Question: | clover |
Answer: | I ordered 3 cans of paint, two of them were so old that no matter how long you shook them, the paint came out in globs & they were useless. I tried to RMA the paint, but Amazon told me that I couldn't ship them back because they're flamable, but I couldn't have a refund unless I returned the product. I've had good success with dupli-color before when buying it from the Auto Parts store, but I would recommend getting it locally rather than on Amazon. |
Question: | I have a scratch on my bumper will i be able to just do the area with all the products or will i have to do the entire bumper to get it to blend |
Answer: | You should not have to paint the entire bumper. First, prep the area where the scratch is. Clean the entire bumper, then depending on the depth of the scratch, you may want to lightly sand and area surrounding the scratch until all is smooth. Then wipe lightly with laquer thinner. Mask off the bumper to isolate it from the car. Get Dupli-color primer and apply a few light coats. Let them dry well before applying more. This will build up the area around the scratch that you had sanded. Let the primer dry overnight. Next, get some 400 and 600 grit sandpaper (wet type) and with a wet piece of 400, sand lightly the entire primed area. Keep dipping the paper in water and don't use fingertips! Clean area with wet cloth and repeat process with 600grit wet paper and you can then sand some of the areas surrounding the primer (scuff the painted surfaces around the repair) Clean it up with damp clothes and let dry. Apply the paint in light coats in a side to side motion. Don't try to cover the primer too fast. Light coats work best and allow dry time in between coats. Eventually the primer will be covered and some of the new paint will then overlap the original paint on bumper (this is part of the blending process) Once all is covered and you cannot see the primer under the paint, let it dry overnight.Next day, get some 1000 grit wet paper and sand the entire repair area lightly. This will help smooth out the new paint. Dont sand too hard so as to make the primer exposed. Sand beyond the new paint so as to scuff up the old untouched paint on the bumper. You are getting the surrounding area ready for the clear cloat blend.Wipe with clean wet cloth and when thoroughly dry you can apply the dupli color clear coat using the same light coat, overlap method. Now you will want to go beyond the repair area bringing the clear coat into the original painted surfaces by a few inches all around. Let the clear coat dry in between coats. Once clear is applyed, let it dry overnight. Next day you can wet sand the entire repair area with 1000 wet paper. Remember, no finger tips. Use your palm or get a sanding block but go lightly. Once you have finished sanding, wipe clean with wet cloth and then polish with Light polishing compound. You can do this by hand if you dont have a buffer. It may sound complicated, but that's a process that will give you the best results outside of going to a body shop. Another consideration, if the scratch is small, get a bottle of duplicolor touch up. It has the brush built in and you can possibly just carefully use the brush and paint to fill in the scratch. I hope this helps! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used with duplicolor |
Answer: | Yes but don't use duplicolor. Call around local auto paint stores and get real auto paint put into aerosol cans. Transtar is a decent one who will do this and it's better quality. My personal opinion. |
Question: | can i use this with high gloss plastidip on a chrome grille |
Answer: | Not sure about chrome. I would coat the chrome grill with adhesion spray first then plastidip. Apply this Spray Max in the end but make sure the adhesion and the plastidip to stick firmly first. |
Question: | How long after applying this can I colorsand and polish |
Answer: | Same as any other clear. Obviously depends on air temp/humidity etc. Also, the longer it dries, the harder it is, so hard to cut |
Question: | So, i’m an artist and i resin my paintings. is this technically a resin/epoxy in a spray can? could i possibly use this on my paintings |
Answer: | Yes it works well. I also do paintings (abstract) and used 2 part resin. The spray Max is just as good and durable. The draw back is, is once you puncture the internal can inside the main can, you only have about 48 hours to use. So you have to make sure you have a few paintings ready to go and coat them all at the same time. Also, purchase a respirator. Harbor freight has them for Les than $20. You get quite a few uses from them, then just throw away and purchase a new one. The vapors in the 2 part spray Max are not good to be inhaling. Outside is fine, but in a enclosed area is not good unless you wear a respirator. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How would this stuff work for wood finishing |
Answer: | It should be fine. It's a catalyzed material, so it pretty much works on everything. You have to spray subsequent coats while the first coat is still tacky. |
Question: | Is this stuff Urathane? Epoxy or Enamel |
Answer: | It's a 2k urethane clearcoat. It is compatible with enamels so long you apply it within 1 hour of the enamel top coat or after it has completely cured which can take weeks/months. If you clear coat on top of enamel that hasn't fully cured, it will wrinkle. I've always sprayed 2k urethane clear coat within 30-40 minutes after applying the last top coat. Never had an issue with wrinkling. |
Question: | Is there a time limit the moment you press the tab in the bottom |
Answer: | After your first coat, put the can in the freezer which can extend the working life by several days. Allow the can to warm up to room temperature before spraying the next coat. One user here was able to extend the working life of a can up to about a month by doing this. Otherwise at 68-degrees, the mfr says the can will go stale after 48hrs and no longer work properly. |
Question: | Has anyone used this over Duplicolor Perfect Match paint |
Answer: | Everything that people said on here is not wrong but it is a bit not needed. The trick to avoid all the steps and days of dry time is if you are going to use a rattle can for your base coat you need to use a FLAT color!! Not semi gloss not satin but flat. Once you clear it then it will be supper glossy but the reason everyone has so much trouble is gloss paint is almost like a plastic coating. A solid sheet to where flat is like a sponge if you were to look at it super up close. The gloss will actually try and repel the clear where flat will soak it in. Spray your color one tack coat, just a mist basiclly. Let dry 15 min do another med wet coat, flash 15 minutes again then another med wet coat and let sit about 30 minutes then go over it with the clear but just a very light tack coat. Let that sit 20 minutes then do med wet over that, 20 minutes, then do your wet coat to get your finsh you need and dont worry about dust or runs because you can cut and buff this clear and get rid of all that once it sets up. Avoid that if you can of course but not a big deal if it happens. The dirt or runs in the clear i mean. Base coat for automotive use is flat before you top coat it so ya. I have done this method more times then i can count and it works awesome!! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Painted alloy wheels with duplicolor wheel coating (hwp101 silver), is this clear coat compatible, any special application instructions |
Answer: | I would recommend using duplicolor # hwp103 for wheel clear because of high heat temperature |
Question: | Can this product be applied over existing clear coat with out sanding. If so what do I clean surface clear coat with before applying |
Answer: | If using over existing clear, you MUST wet SSN the existing clear with 800-1000 grit. These very fine scratches will be filled with the new clear coat - failure to sand will result in failure and eventual peeling of the clear coat - the new clear needs a surface to bite into. |
Question: | can i use it my my plastic headlights, and if so, do i need an adhesion promotor |
Answer: | I sanded with 1000 grit and the clear coat filled the lines in very well. I had previously used Meguires headlight clearcoat and sanded with 2500, but the lines were still visible after 2 coats - it also turned yellow and started to peel after 4 months. I sanded all the Meguires off prior to using the 2k to avoid any lifting problems. They looked great after 2 coats. Beware the overspray! I should have covered my whole car with a drop cloth. |
Question: | What type of clearcoat is this? Acrylic/Enamel/Laquer |
Answer: | Acrylic. Word of caution. Make sure that you apply a very light coat at first, followed by a second coat a little heavier, followed by an EVEN third wet coat. If you end up with a run DO NOT TRY TO FIX IT UNTIL THE CLEAR COAT IS COMPLETELY DRY!! Then use a new single edge razor blade to scrape any runs. If you have a speck of dust or a bug, gently remove then using a clean cotton swab, dab a drop of clear coat over the "hole" and let it merge into the void. Also, once you puncture the internal can, you only have about 2 hours before the product solidifies in the can. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this clear resistant to gasoline if it is spilled on it |
Answer: | No I spilled some on my tank and it yellowed an peeled |
Question: | Hi, can this product be used on Plastic Headlights? Thanks |
Answer: | It kind of depends on what you're doing with the headlights. As stated here if you're doing a standard restoration kit to remove the normal yellowing in the headlight's plastic lens, those kits do not come with a process to clear coat afterwards. In general terms though, if you want to clear coat the lens you're just adding clear protective layers to the lens and have the added benefit that if you then get a scratch you simply have to hit it again with some sandpaper and apply a new coat to "remove" the scratch. If you use a fine grit sandpaper (800 - 1200) to scuff the lens in order to hold the clear coat you'll be fine and would never use any type of primer in this instance. I have to say I have not used this on headlights but I "smoked" my tail lights with VTH Nightshades and then clear coated over that with this and it turned out great. I also have to say though that I only got a little over a year out of it before the clear coat started to yellow and the Nightshades started to lighten up so just using a headlight restoration kit may keep the yellow off longer, I've just never used one to know for sure. |
Question: | I used a dupli-color clearcoat with da1692 code. but can looked different and it said "clearcoat". is this the same clearcoat or is it different |
Answer: | Yes this is clear coat and this clear coat is a paint which gives glows 'shine' to the existing paint surface. (I have bought one of these and tried to use it on my car's bumper and it really messed up) I recommend to try on any old paint surface before using on main body |
Question: | Would i be able to apply this over my hood after i paint it |
Answer: | That is the purpose but I would not recommend it. It wants a week between coats or it will orange peel. Try a lacquer instead. You can build up coats to match the gloss level. |

Answer: | At least 12 |
Question: | Would this spray work over bedliner |
Answer: | It would but you would need a few cans and only if plastic bedliner i wouldn't recommend. I'm sure you could find the right type for it . Other wise I'd spay with gun in booth |
Question: | Is this enough clear coat to coat a pickup truck hood |
Answer: | You can get one coat not sure about 2 since there is no mention of the size of pickup truck. You will also need to consider if you are painting indoors or outdoors. If you paint outdoors and there is any kind of wind you may not have enough to do one coat since most of the spray will be gone with the wind. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Is it arcrilic enamil |
Answer: | It has a harder that you activate on the bottom before you spray . Then you have 48 hrs to use after that its no good . |

Question: | Can you use it over rustoleum base coat |
Answer: | You can. I sprayed the clear coat immediately after spraying the rustoleum base and it turned out great. |
Question: | Does this product provide any UV protection |
Answer: | Yes this is a high quality clear with UV Protection |
Question: | does this paint react to gasoline |
Answer: | My experience after cured will stand up to lacquer thinner- rag clean up. (not soaking in it) Just did a gas tank area on a trike and haven’t had a reaction yet... Be sensible |
Question: | How long do you have to use a mixed can? How soon after a coat can you sand that coat? Or, is it best to repeat coats while still a bit wet? 20 min |
Answer: | This is a 2=part spray paint that requires activation of the product in order to use it. Shelf life lis like any other spray paint can. Once you activate the product, then you have about 2-5 days of before the the spray paint hardens in the can. Results depend on temperature, humidity, etc. Takes about 15min for the clear coat to flash, then you can recoat if necessary . I would wait 24hrs before sanding the coat. Just like any urethan paint, a proper cure time is necessary to achieve best results. |

Question: | Does the clear enamel have a gloss to it |
Answer: | Yes for hgheat engine clear it has a nice clear when the directions are followed |
Question: | how well would this product work painting my car dis brake calipers |
Answer: | I think this paint would work good on the calipers, clean them real good and get the free of rust, and then put a primer on them. This paint works great on a lot projects. It is a little slow drying, but seems to very durable. |
Question: | Does this have to heat up in order to cure? or can it be sprayed and then withstand up to 500' temps?using inside headlight housing:projector retrofit |
Answer: | You will need to let the paint fully cure before heating for the best durability, subjecting the paint to heat before it cures can lead to bubbling and/or flaking. |
Question: | Can this product be used on an electric range? I have intentions of painting our stove but the products for that don't come in high gloss as this does |
Answer: | Rustoleum makes a product called "Appliance Epoxy." I've used it for years on everything from the side of a refrigerator to race car parts. It dries to a rock hard shiny finish and is practically indestructible. That's going to be what you'll need. |

Question: | One review says it must be "baked". how long at what temp? thank you |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many cans is needed to fully clearcoat an entire rear bumper |
Answer: | it depends how big is the bumper and how many coats would you do but 2 cans should be plenty |
Question: | Is it only good for 48 hours after you pop the bottom? Of you dont pop the bottom(activate it)? how long is the shelf life if you dont activate it |
Answer: | Correct. It's only good up to 48 hours once mixed and likely less. There isn't really that much in each can though so using it all in 1 day was never a problem for me. If anything I found 1 can was never enough. Now I buy a few cans at a time. |
Question: | Could this spray be used to protect a deep scratch on a car? I’m trying to find a product that will prevent rust and protect the car through winter |
Answer: | Likely, you are better off filling the scratch in with some filler/bondo if its really thick, sanding to make everything even, spraying it with primer/urethane paint, and then clearing it with 2K clear.. |
Question: | How many cans for the whole car |
Answer: | Hypothesis 30 cans. You have to think of more than one coat, possibly two, but three is better. You also have to compensate for the blending, there will be areas that seem to slightly differ and will need to be blended, smoothed out. Every time the can empty's out, it will cause variances which will need attention to blend. Now, If you just wish you car too look better and don't need a professional look, you can probably go with about 20 cans. I'm basing my answer on the coats i have used on my cars, the hood on one, the trunk on the other and the rail above the driver side window from hood to trunk. One thing that has happened to my cars on the trunk it rained and I had to sand it all off and start again. on the rail, It didn't hold too well and in less than a year started to peel. I did do two coats on the cars. Hopefully this information has helped. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Perhaps less glaring to use matte on an older car? will it (after preparation) stick to the paint-type of a 2004 nissan sentra? thanks |
Answer: | I don't see why it wouldn't. People put more than one coat of clearcoat often to provide more protection to their paint. But, the suface needs to be clean and free of wax or any oils from your hands. This can cause a number of different flaws in the clearcoat. Some wet sanding may be needed also. But It's most important to make sure it's clean, try denatured alcohol or maybe acetone for cleaning. |
Question: | Would this create a strong, durable seal for press-on lettering which is on anodized aluminum? (trying to label video monitor buttons |
Answer: | I think it would have to have several coats to create a seal |
Question: | I have some matte black sink flanges that I would like to protect. They will be getting wet, but won’t stay wet. Will this work |
Answer: | This product is a clear coat to enhance a spray paint job, won’t add anymore protection |
Question: | Can I use this over rust for a patina finish |
Answer: | This would be great to use over a rusted patina. It will offer great protection to the patina as well. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Once the can is activated how long can it be stored and used once more |
Answer: | Yes - putting it in the freezer halts the catalyzation. Warm it up before spraying. I've had cans stay liquid for weeks this way. |
Question: | Will this product work on cleaned steel |
Answer: | No, clear coat or paint must have something to "bite" into, so it must be sanded and a direct to metal primer applied before the clear coat. |
Question: | Can I use this product as a top coat for cabinets (maple cabinet with light stain |
Answer: | Your cabinets are likely installed in a hight humidity environment (ie. Kitchen) Wood tends to shrink and expand, which requires a flexible top coat to prevent surface cracking. This is a very durable clear coat. It is resistant to gasoline and many other solvents. It is also very hard. I don’t think that it would do well on wood, but for automotive applications it is absolutely superb. I hope this helps. |
Question: | Can i use this on a brushed aluminum car wheel after i prep it? and can i use it on a polished aluminum car wheel after i prep it |
Answer: | Think of this as commercial auto paint in a can. It is a two part chemical set. Look up on youtube what auto clear coats can do. I would say yes. As long it is not epoxy as the sun breaks it down to powder. This is not epoxy. Good luck. I used it as a top coat on aluminum over metallic spray paint that was not a two part and therefore soft and easy to scratch. The clear coat made it much stronger and was happy not to have to pull out the big spray equipment to get it done. You might need two cans if you are planning to build it up a bit. One can just might make it. You will have a lot of masking unless the rims are naked. |
