13 best motorcycles oils

Motorcycle oils are specialized lubricants designed for use in motorcycle engines. These oils are formulated to meet the unique requirements of motorcycle engines, which differ from those of cars and other vehicles. Here's what you need to know about motorcycle oils:

  1. Viscosity: Viscosity is a critical factor when it comes to motorcycle oils. Motorcycle engines often have higher RPM (revolutions per minute) and operate at higher temperatures than car engines. Therefore, motorcycle oils are formulated to have the right viscosity to provide proper lubrication under these conditions. Common viscosity ratings for motorcycle oils include 10W-40, 20W-50, and others, with the first number representing the oil's viscosity in cold temperatures and the second number representing its viscosity at operating temperatures.

  2. Additives: Motorcycle oils often contain additives that enhance their performance and protect the engine. These additives may include anti-wear agents, detergents, dispersants, and antioxidants. Some oils are specifically designed for high-performance motorcycles and may have additional additives to provide superior protection under extreme conditions.

  3. Wet Clutch Compatibility: Many motorcycles use a wet clutch system where the clutch is bathed in the same oil that lubricates the engine. Motorcycle oils are formulated to be compatible with wet clutches, ensuring proper clutch engagement and longevity.

  4. JASO Standards: The Japanese Automotive Standards Organization (JASO) sets standards for motorcycle oils. JASO MA and JASO MB are two common classifications. JASO MA oils are suitable for motorcycles with wet clutches, while JASO MB oils are not suitable for wet clutch applications. It's essential to use the appropriate JASO-rated oil for your motorcycle to prevent clutch slippage or damage.

  5. Synthetic vs. Conventional: Motorcycle oils are available in both synthetic and conventional (mineral) formulations. Synthetic oils typically offer better high-temperature stability and overall performance, making them a preferred choice for high-performance motorcycles. However, conventional oils may still be suitable for older or less demanding bikes.

  6. Change Intervals: The frequency of oil changes for motorcycles depends on factors such as the type of oil used, the engine's design, and the manufacturer's recommendations. It's essential to follow the manufacturer's guidelines for oil change intervals to maintain optimal engine performance and longevity.

  7. Oil Filters: Along with using the right oil, using a quality oil filter is crucial for maintaining the health of your motorcycle's engine. The oil filter helps remove contaminants and debris from the oil, ensuring that it remains clean and effective.

  8. Storage: Proper storage of motorcycle oil is important to maintain its quality. Store oil containers in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Ensure that the containers are tightly sealed to prevent contamination.

In conclusion, choosing the right motorcycle oil is essential for the proper functioning and longevity of your motorcycle's engine. Consider factors like viscosity, additives, wet clutch compatibility, and the manufacturer's recommendations when selecting the right oil for your bike. Regular oil changes and maintenance are key to keeping your motorcycle's engine running smoothly.

User questions & answers

Question: why is this item 50% more than other sites
Answer: I don’t know what you’re talking about. Around six dollars per bottle is pretty cheap in my book!
Question: So a pack of three, I would be receiving 3 gallons correct
Answer: Yes, THREE, 3, gallons! I never heard of Castrol making any schlock. Can't touch this price at Walmart plus free shipping. Do it. Be sure to follow the owners manual to the T...Roy
Question: Suitable for Harley touring bike
Answer: Only oil related failures I have ever seen on HD engines is not enough oil, not changing the oil, not changing filter, along with poor maintenance. You can use anybodys diesel rated 5w40 or 15w40 Synthetic or conventional engine oil in a Harley Davidson engine safely just change it every 2500 or 3000 miles your not going to have any problems. This oil advertised I wouldn't be one bit afraid to use it in my harley Davidson engines. Harley Davidson says right in the maintenance manual if you cannot find our oil use a diesel or air cooled engine rated oil. The HD oil last time I checked was made by Citgo for HD Before that their oil was made by shell. Look at the API donut on this oil and decode it I am pretty sure that this oil will meet or probably exceed the requirements for your engine. As for some of the oils that are mentioned that have claims they are the cats meow and are "American Made" look close at them they don't have the API donut on their bottles they just make claims. I have ran Castrol conventional 15w40 diesel oil in freezing temperatures to 100+ degree heat in a twin cam engine and a Sportster engine with absolutely no problems so I don't see why this wouldn't work.
Question: Is this oil "energy conserving" or "resource conserving"? if so, suziki does not recommend this type of oil for a 2017 v-strom 650a
Answer: It’s wet clutch MA rated. Stick in the bike and she’ll like it

User questions & answers

Question: I never received my order from you. My updates say that the carrier lost it. What happens now? John
Answer: John, you have two options. One is to request a refund for a product never delivered. The other is to request a replacement product. I have done both in the past and Amazon has done a great job in helping me rectify the issues. Make sure you keep any documentation you have that shows what happened.
Question: Part Synthetic mean Semi Synthetic
Answer: Yes, to my knowledge it means semi-synthetic. I used this oil in one modern Kawasaki zx1400 R and in my vintage 1980 Honda CBX, 1976 CB550 and 1979 Suzuki GS 1000. The oil works great, no problems, shifting is great. I would recommend this oil. I will buy it again.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this oil work for both a ducati monster dry clutch (m900) and wet clutch (620 dark)? thanks
Answer: The dry clutch doesn't get engine oil so if the engine is recommended for full synthetic there's no problem for the "dry" clutch. As far as the 620 goes if the mfr recommends full synthetic then go with it.
Question: How often do u change synthetic oil. In 2012 Flhtk
Answer: I would stick to the 3000 mile change as called for in the owner's manual. I know some people say you can go longer with synthetic but I would not. Saying that, much of it has to do with if you do a lot of stop and go city driving vs to hwy, in town driving can stress the bike more than hwy. Oil changes are cheap in the big scheme of things, you should always check your oil and alot can be told by the color and smell. Hope this helps, drive safe.
Question: Why is this oil rated only for motorcycles? Won't it perform as well as previous Castrol 20-50 synthetics in my bal. and bluprinted auto engine
Answer: Automobiles with catalytic converters 1975 & up require a maximum of 800 ppm of zinc additives. Zinc is added to reduce wear and prevent oxidation of the oil. Most motorcycle oils including this one have over 1000 ppm of zinc, to reduce wear on their highly stressed, air cooled engines. The added zinc won't be good for your cars catalytic converter.
Question: can I switch from amsoil to castrol full synthetic
Answer: I think so. My understanding is you can go from petrol oil to synth, and synth brand to synth brand, but you should avoid going back to petrol. Btw: This Castrol has been great in my Harley. No problems.

Question: I have a 2002 kawasaki zx1200r with wet clutched. will this oil work? i also have a 1998 harley davidson fatboy. will it wotk for that too
Answer: I wouldn't use it for either one. The harley calls for a 20W50 weight synthetic, and the kawasaki also calls for synthetic MC oil. Order the Kawasaki brand to be safe 10W40. Both are sold on Amazon.
Question: Will this work for a 2002 Suzuki vz800 marauder
Answer: This will work but... Just a heads up, I do know the vz800 is a wet clutch and with this oil my FZ9 clutch slipped. I started using Rotella and the clutch no longer slips. Seems some people have this issue, some don't. If you really want to dig around on motorcycle oil head over to BOBISTHEOILGUY, tons of information and enough arguments on oil to make you doubt your purpose in life.
Question: Will this work for a Yamaha 1980 xs
Answer: Yes it is for 4 stoke engines
Question: Is this oil Full synthetic
Answer: No. Pretty sure it is a dino oil. . not even part synthetic. They make part synthetic and full synthetic but this is not it.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this conventional oil
Answer: Idk, I bought it for my 2017 ninja 300 winter edition.
Question: Could i use it for a ninja 650 abd
Answer: Short answer: The owner's manual for a 2006 ninja 650 is 10W-40, I currently have a 2015 zx636 and it's also 10W-40 in accordance with my service manual. Long answer: Basically 10W-40 will work for your bike unless you plan to continuously operate the engine at extremely cold (in that case maybe use thinner oils such as 5W-40 or 5W-30 because they flow better in sub freezing weather) or hot temperatures (in that case maybe use thicker oil like 20W-50) to which point it affects the fluid viscosity drastically. (The number before the W is the SAE viscosity rating in cold temp and the number after the W is the viscosity rating at 210 deg F and the is the normal operating temp of your bike, generally speaking) The oil viscosity affects the lubrication of your engine for when you cold/hot start your bike and also affects the lubrication during your normal engine cycle at the designed temp. source: I am the mf-ing nerd engineer and proud ninja rider
Question: is this synthetic
Answer: It is not synthetic. It is conventional
Question: is one gallon enough for the 05 zzr
Answer: A litre bike is a litre bike because of the cc's, aka 1000cc, nothing to do with the oil capacity. That being said, the zzr oil capacity is around 3.6 w/out a filter change. 3.8 w/ a filter change. A gallon is 4 quarts, so this will be good for an oil change.

User questions & answers

Question: What are you guys running for oil change intervals on this stuff? I have about 2500 miles on my first interval using this oil. Love it
Answer: 3,000 - 3,500 on average in both bikes, Yamaha Stryker (1300 cc v-twin) and Kawi Z900 (948 cc inline 4). I’ve gone as high as 4,000 on the Stryker which I believe is the recommended oil change interval on that particular bike. Love Motul. Pretty sure my Z900 runs cooler on it than dino oil.
Question: Just purchased a 2020 kawasaki z900. Will this oil be good at my 600 mile breakin period
Answer: I don't why not. If you're going to start using regular oils after 600 miles this would be the one I would go with. I have a 2008 Kawasaki Concours 14 with 124k miles on it and love this oil. I haven't always used it but will be from now on. Been using it since about 80k. Not going back.
Question: The oil is advertised as being 100% synthetic "ester based". does anyone know whether the base stock or base oil is 100% esters or is it a mixture
Answer: 100% ester.
Question: How many quarts is it
Answer: 4 quarts

Question: Is gn4 good for both the engine and transmission side? Does it have moly additives
Answer: It doesn't have any moly additives, the only Honda oil that has moly in it is the HP4M. It will work on both engine and transmission sides, but personally I prefer the Honda HP Trans 80/85W in the transmission. Hopefully that helps!
