12 best 20w 50 motorcycle oils

20W-50 motorcycle oil is a type of motor oil specifically designed for use in motorcycles. The "20W-50" designation refers to the oil's viscosity, which is a measure of its flow characteristics at different temperatures.

Here's what the numbers in "20W-50" mean:

  1. Viscosity at Low Temperature (W for Winter): The "20" indicates the oil's viscosity in cold temperatures. The lower the number, the better the oil flows in cold weather. In this case, 20W means the oil has a lower viscosity and flows better in colder conditions.

  2. Viscosity at High Temperature: The "50" indicates the oil's viscosity at high temperatures.Higher numbers indicate a thicker oil that provides better lubrication and protection at higher temperatures.

Motorcycle engines, especially those in high-performance or older bikes, may benefit from the thicker viscosity of a 20W-50 oil, particularly in warmer climates or if the engine runs hot. It provides a balance between good cold-weather flow and robust protection at high temperatures, making it suitable for a wide range of riding conditions.

However, it's crucial to consult the motorcycle manufacturer's recommendations and the owner's manual to ensure that the chosen oil meets the specific requirements of the engine. Some motorcycles may require different viscosities or formulations, so using the right oil is essential for optimal engine performance and longevity.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this oil work for both a ducati monster dry clutch (m900) and wet clutch (620 dark)? thanks
Answer: The dry clutch doesn't get engine oil so if the engine is recommended for full synthetic there's no problem for the "dry" clutch. As far as the 620 goes if the mfr recommends full synthetic then go with it.
Question: How often do u change synthetic oil. In 2012 Flhtk
Answer: I would stick to the 3000 mile change as called for in the owner's manual. I know some people say you can go longer with synthetic but I would not. Saying that, much of it has to do with if you do a lot of stop and go city driving vs to hwy, in town driving can stress the bike more than hwy. Oil changes are cheap in the big scheme of things, you should always check your oil and alot can be told by the color and smell. Hope this helps, drive safe.
Question: Why is this oil rated only for motorcycles? Won't it perform as well as previous Castrol 20-50 synthetics in my bal. and bluprinted auto engine
Answer: Automobiles with catalytic converters 1975 & up require a maximum of 800 ppm of zinc additives. Zinc is added to reduce wear and prevent oxidation of the oil. Most motorcycle oils including this one have over 1000 ppm of zinc, to reduce wear on their highly stressed, air cooled engines. The added zinc won't be good for your cars catalytic converter.
Question: can I switch from amsoil to castrol full synthetic
Answer: I think so. My understanding is you can go from petrol oil to synth, and synth brand to synth brand, but you should avoid going back to petrol. Btw: This Castrol has been great in my Harley. No problems.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i use valvoline 10w 40 4-stroke in a yamaha 1300 v star
Answer: go to your compressor and read if that is the freon you require. It might be also on a label at the back of your fridge.
Question: is atv oil the same as motorcycle oil
Answer: They are the same. The "r" simply means "refrigerant".
Question: Is anyone using this in the older Honda Valkyries? (ex: mine is a 1999) if so, how do you like it
Answer: If your 1984 Corvette was converted to use R-134A, then yes this will work. If it hasn't been converted and is still set up for R-12 usage, then you need to convert to R-134A. The compressor oil is not compatible so it requires a complete system flush and removal of the compressor to drain the original Alkyl-Benzyne oil.
Question: Is this oil for 2009 cbr600rr
Answer: They have updated the design so some cans are still a solid top but the newest ones are a self-sealing can. It does require a different top to work properly.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this quiet a harley air cooled twin better than Lucas synthetic 20w
Answer: Best to look for an owners manual specification. I put this in my Kawasaki Vulcan 750 as the manual called for 10w 40. If you want to take the recommendations of others who own this bike, the answer would be yes according to http://vstar1300.pbworks.com/w/page/5760710/Oil%20-%20Filters%20-%20Oil%20Changes%20-
Question: what is better for my harley v-twin,synthetic or conventional 20w 50 lucas oil
Answer: It is advertised as a different product. Valvoline also makes an ATV oil. I'm sure it is basically the same thing. The motorcycle oil may have slightly better qualities since many bikes have high performance engines that need to operate at higher RPMs for peak performance.
Question: Is this a synthetic ic oil
Answer: My '03 Yamaha FJR 1300 likes it. I also run it in 3 quads, one with a manual trans, and a Yamaha Rhino. I've also used it in a 10 hp 4 stroke outboard motor.
Question: Would this work in a 1982 cb450t
Answer: This is good for all 4 stroke motors, Follow your owners manual to make sure that 10w40 is OK, you always want to defer to the manual when choosing the weight of your oil

User questions & answers

Question: Can this oil handle high temperature
Answer: I don't know what you feel high temperature means. I have used it in an engine that ran as high as 100C without loss of performance.
Question: Can I use it for a toyota corolla
Answer: I've only used this in my 2010 Corolla s
Question: so whats the differrence or benefit of this over the other castrols
Answer: It was the least expensive 0w/20 good quality oil I could find at the time. Good good reviews, so I got it.Not sure if it's any "better" than any other good oil. You might find more answers at that website that talks about engine oil...........I think it's "Bob is the oil guy" ..........or something like that.
Question: Is this a synthetic, conventional or blend, base oil product
Answer: Not truly. It is a group 3 "synthetic" that uses conventional oil and refines it (via processes like hydrocracking) and in the US can be called synthetic but like most synthetics which are group 3 could not be called synthetic in many other countries like Germany for example. Those oils need to be group 4 which use P.A.O. basestocks or group 5 which use Ester basestocks. By the way since this oil is mainly concerning itself with oil sticking to metal Ester basestocks are naturally excellent at adhering to metal surfaces. There are differences between group 4 and 5 oils. A major one is that Esters are hygroscopic (absorb water) while P.A.O. are hydrophobic (do not absorb water) in practical terms it could relate to seal swell. True synthetics have very consistent molecule structure an as such do not need V.I. additives to try to stabilize viscosity over time. True synthetics maintain that on their own. As should be obvious by now there is no simple answer to what is "best". I use group 3 synthetics in my street muscle cars. Companies have rebates multiple times a year for months. I take advantage of those. If the oil is not as cheap on Amazon the big W store has low prices. Right now one can buy Pennzoil Platinum Ultra (their best) for $20/5quart jug. The rebate is $10. A good price. Mobil 1 E.P. is $25 and a E.P. filter $9. The rebate for just the oil is $12. The rebate for oil and filter is $17. Another good deal. For my supersport motorcycles I use motorcycle specific Group 5 oils usually such as Motul 7100 (made in France). I urge everyone to learn about oils and be comfortable in their selections. Follow your vehicles manufacturers recommendations. If you read the fine print on any oil they pretty much make their claims then add to follow your manufacturers recommendations in oil specs and change intervals. We had a motor oil discussion here that went on over 4 years. The Bobstheoilguy site is still up and joining that is a great idea IMO

Sludge can block your engine’s vital oilways like cholesterol and if untreated, can rob an engine of its power and ultimately its life.

Castrol GTX is a premium conventional motor oil that has been helping to extend engine life for over 50 years. It has evolved to meet the needs of consumers and vehicle manufacturers since 1968 and continues to innovate and remain a trusted brand today. Severe driving conditions such as heavy traffic, poor fuel quality, harsh driving conditions and exceeding oil change intervals can all cause the build-up of a thick, tar like substance called sludge.

If untreated, it can rob an engine of its power and ultimately its life. This oil is specially engineered to prevent the harmful build-up of sludge while protecting against new sludge formation better than tough industry standards.

User questions & answers

Question: how many miles can i git between oil changes on my 09 tri glide
Answer: It’s a good quality air cooled engine oil. Not sure why you ask if it makes it “ quite “ ?
Question: Can this be used for an air cooled engine? I have a 2000 fat boy
Answer: I have loggged many miles on my bike (bikes) I mean over the 100K mark. I have never had any trouble using a good 20W50 MC (dino) oil, I will tell you this, I would never use 20W50 in all 3 holes. The tranny should have a good gear oil, the primary should have a good primary oil (I use Lucas pri oil) and the crank a good 20w50. With that said if you keep up oil changes like you should your bike should run fine for many many miles. The synthetics are good no dought, but if your not racing, or running a high rev engine 12K or better, runiing a good so called dino oil is fine.
Question: Primary holds 1.4 quarts. Why does this kit only offer 1 quart
Answer: This is 10700 the conventional/non-synthetic, 10716 is the synthetic for air-cooled bikes, it is 10w-50 rather than 20w-50. Both are suitable for HD v-twin use.
Question: Will this work for my 2005 Harley Davidson Softail standard
Answer: I use it in my 1988 HD Anniversary Electra Glide and it works well I road to and from Alaska with 0 issues or problems helped with engine oil temp.

Product description

Lucas High Performance Motorcycle Oils are the result of technology gained through years of blending motor oils and gear oils for the racing industry. These are TRUE racing oils that FAR exceed all manufacturer specifications and can outlast other oils up to 4 times on the track or on the street. Lucas Motorcycle Oils are built for endurance. These oils will lower oil temperatures, extend the life of vital components, reduce noise and leaks and increase performance.

Motor oil is made from crude oil and is used to lubricate, clean, and cool engines. Types of motor oil include conventional, synthetic, diesel, bio-based, hybrid (blends of conventional and synthetic), and recycled oils. Motor oil varies in weight and viscosity, as well as additives that some manufacturers add to the oil during the refining process. A numerical code system created by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) grades motor oils according to viscosity--the higher the number between 0 and 60, the more viscous (thicker) the oil is. Most consumer motor oils are graded by two numbers, with the first number indicating cold weather (Winter or "W") performance.

SAE 20W-50

This oil has a weight of SAE 20W-50, meaning it has an SAE viscosity rating of 20 in cold temperatures and a rating of 50 at normal operating temperature. Always check your vehicle's owner's manual to verify that this is the correct weight of motor oil for your vehicle.

Full Synthetic Oil

This oil is a full synthetic oil, meaning crude oil is not used in making it. Synthetic oil can be used in vehicle engines instead of motor oils refined from crude oil, and often provides superior mechanical performance over traditional motor oil, including increased gas mileage and reduced engine wear at extreme temperatures. Its complex method of production means it can often cost more than conventional motor oil.

User questions & answers

Question: Ha guys i kina got a crazy question i actually ordered this for my truck not motorcycle will this work in my truck
Answer: I change my oil every spring, I put an average of 5,000 miles a year on my 05 Road King. I have read that with this oil you can go 10,000 miles between changes but I always like to start the riding season with fresh fluids.
Question: how long can you go between oil changes in a Twin Cam
Answer: I use it in an air cooled 2017 Harley Lowrider and It works great. A noticeable improvement in shifting.
Question: can i use this oil in the tranny and primary
Answer: Not all Harley's have the same capacity. I have a 2011 soft tail that holds a quart ( 32 Oz.) and a 2009 Road King that holds 36 Oz. You should check your bikes engine manual and see what you need so you can be prepared to service your bike per the manufactures recommendations.
Question: Can you use this in all three holes
Answer: Not sure. My 12 Street bob has the 96ci and I had some extra fluids

User questions & answers

Question: Is this price for a case or one quart
Answer: It's a full synthetic so I guess it should work. Probably the only concern would be the weight....20-50 for the bikes. Hope this helps
Question: If I buy this oil how many miles do I need to replace the oil again
Answer: You can probably go double the millage Harley tells you, but I personally won't run mine any farther than their recommendations. And I only do that if I'm traveling. I personally change mine every 3000 to 3500, as I've been riding for 40 plus years and know the heat from a twin cam will kill your oil sooner. Clean oil is your friend and at the millage I change mine at it is already dirty.
Question: This is full synthetic correct
Answer: I ride an 04 Yamaha VStar 1100, the engine/tranny share the same oil. I switched to the full syn Lucas at about 35K. What I noticed was an immediate difference in shifting. Overall the drivetrain was slightly quieter, and 1st, then 3-5th shift "like butter." Second on this bike always shifted like a tractor.. not it's more like a Harley. This is a great oil for a motorcycle, I'd reccommend either this or a high performance diesel truck oil, which surprisingly works great in a motorcycle, designed for a high temp , high stress environment.
Question: With the Zinc in it will this work good in my
Answer: I use it in one hole wet clutch applications so not sure about the 3 separate hole thing

User questions & answers

Question: why is this item 50% more than other sites
Answer: Ehh, it's a bit heavy for a weed Wacker motor... Aim for a 10w-30 non synthetic. (as synthetics do not dissipate heat as quickly as conventional oil)
Question: So a pack of three, I would be receiving 3 gallons correct
Answer: No this isn't a synthetic oil. If you want a synthetic oil look for it to say synthetic on the oil jug... There's also semi synthetic too. Don't get them confused. Hope this helped
Question: Suitable for Harley touring bike
Answer: Yes, any vintage motorcycle will be protected best by this oil.
Question: Is this oil "energy conserving" or "resource conserving"? if so, suziki does not recommend this type of oil for a 2017 v-strom 650a
Answer: I'm not familiar with blast model. If your manual says you can use 20/50 oil then yes. This oil is a good oil I've been using it since 2002 in a suzuki quad and now a Suzuki hayabusa. I highly recommend this oil to my friends. Hope this helps
