12 best power steering fluids
Power steering fluid is a specialized hydraulic oil used in power steering systems of vehicles. It plays a crucial role in assisting the driver in turning the steering wheel and maneuvering the vehicle. Here is some information about power steering fluids in the context of automotive applications:
Hydraulic Oils: Power steering fluid is a type of hydraulic oil specifically formulated for power steering systems. It is a high-performance fluid designed to meet the unique demands of power steering units, which require smooth and reliable hydraulic assistance.
Function: The primary function of power steering fluid is to transmit hydraulic pressure from the power steering pump to the steering gear or rack. This pressure assists in the movement of the steering components, making it easier for the driver to turn the steering wheel, especially at low speeds or when parking.
Compatibility: It is essential to use the right type of power steering fluid recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Different vehicle models may require specific types or formulations of power steering fluid, so it's crucial to follow the manufacturer's guidelines to ensure proper performance and prevent damage to the system.
Maintenance: Power steering fluid should be checked and maintained as part of routine vehicle maintenance.Over time, it can become contaminated with dirt, moisture, and debris, which can affect its performance. If the fluid appears discolored or has a burnt smell, it may be time to replace it.
Replacement: When replacing power steering fluid, it's essential to use the correct type of fluid as specified in the vehicle's owner's manual. The old fluid is typically flushed out, and fresh fluid is added to ensure optimal performance.
Overheating and Foaming: Power steering fluid can become hot during extended periods of use, such as when driving in hot weather or while towing heavy loads. Overheating can cause the fluid to foam, which can lead to a loss of power assist and steering performance. Proper cooling and regular fluid checks can help prevent overheating issues.
Leak Detection: Leaks in the power steering system can result in a loss of fluid, which can lead to reduced steering assistance and potential damage to the power steering pump. Leaks should be promptly addressed to prevent further problems.
Oils Fluids: Power steering fluid is categorized as a type of oil or hydraulic fluid commonly used in automotive applications. It falls under the broader category of automotive fluids and lubricants.
In summary, power steering fluid is a specialized hydraulic oil used in power steering systems to assist drivers in turning the steering wheel. It is vital to use the correct type of fluid recommended by the vehicle manufacturer and to maintain the fluid's quality to ensure optimal steering performance and the longevity of the power steering system. Regular checks, maintenance, and addressing leaks are essential aspects of power steering system care in the automotive context.

User questions & answers
Question: | Okay so do I use this as a power steering fluid or do I mix it with the current power steering fluid inside the car |
Answer: | Remove an equal amount of P/S fluid from the reservoir and mix the whole bottle in. Don't hold your breath for some magic to happen. It didn't do a thing to quiet my noisy P/S pump as claimed. |
Question: | Do you have to drain the power steering fluid first |
Answer: | i did not drain the power steering fluid just added it to pump. |
Question: | Does this work on a 1998 Infiniti |
Answer: | I have a 2001 Hinda Odyssey and it worked like a charm. Took the noise away completely. I'm sure it'll come back eventually, but for now it saved me tons of money. If it does comeback I'll drain it out and out another bottle in again. Definitely worth a try! |
Question: | Has anyone used this on a Mercedes |
Answer: | Used on a Chevy Van 1998 worked fine. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Depending on the severity of the leak, the first thing you may notice is spotting, where you will find fluid spots located on the driveway or garage floor. The next thing that happens is the steering wheel becomes harder to turn or does not turn smoothly. This is usually accompanied by a squealing or grinding noise when turning the wheel.
What causes power steering leaks?
The most common cause of power steering system leaks is age and/or high mileage. After time, power steering seals and o-rings tend to dry out and shrink causing leaks. Bar’s Leaks Power Steering Repair works to revitalize these seals and makes them soft and pliable again.
How much do I install?
The 16 oz Bar’s Leaks Power Steering Repair, part number 1600, is designed for one bottle to be used for every 2 to 3 quarts of power steering fluid, which is the amount most passenger cars and light trucks use. For larger systems use one bottle for every 2.5 quarts of capacity.

Product description
LUBEGARD Synthetic Power Steering Fluid is the high quality service solution for ALL European, North American, and Asian Vehicles (Honda fluid is recommended for Honda/Acura vehicles). This fluid is formulated with a superior base synthetic oil and a proprietary additive package that includes 2 patented technologies: SynergolTMS and LXE. Together these technologies provide the most advanced anti-wear protection available. SynergolTMS is the first non-active, phosphorous-free surface molecule composed solely of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. It contains no other toxic, corrosive, metallic or polluting elements. As an extended life anti-wear material, it extends far beyond normal power steering fluid in safeguarding system components. LXE (Liquid Wax Ester) has a molecular structure that allows unsurpassed heat transfer making LUBEGARD Synthetic Power Steering Fluid the most heat stable power steering product sold. The combination of these two technologies in a synthetic base prolongs the life of the power steering system unit and makes the operation smoother and less stiff. In third party testing, LUBEGARD Synthetic Power Steering Fluid outperformed competitive power steering fluids in three important ways: 1. Superior anti-wear formula significantly reduces friction, provides more potent rust and corrosion protection and extends the life of the power steering unit . 2. Effective in a wider range of temperatures (-41oF to 130oF) providing excellent cold and high temperature performance. 3. Protects seals and hoses reducing the risk of power steering leaks and prolonging the life of the parts.

User questions & answers
Question: | My steering fluid is a little above min at present.Do I have to drain the existing fluid before adding this |
Answer: | If I recall the directions (when all else fails, read the directions!) you should get as much of the existing power steering fluid out and then add the Stop Leak. I actually did this twice so that the fluid would be mostly the Lucas product and the leak stopped shortly thereafter. Do not overfill the reservoir! |
Question: | Will this work in a 2004 honda crv |
Answer: | I searched and found this: "Can I use Lucas power steering fluid in a Honda? a.) Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak is compatible with Honda specified power steering fluid. Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak is largely a seal softener, so if the leak is due to a torn seal or a damaged hose or pipe, it will not work." Hope this helps, |
Question: | Is compatible with a 1999 Toyota Camry |
Answer: | Although the bottle says compatible with all power steering fluid your car uses Dextron III ATF in the power steering and I don't believe they are compatible. I would not use it unless LUCAS tech support says it's OK. |
Question: | is this oil dexron II |
Answer: | I have not heard any think about that. I used it to fix noise in my Chrysler 04. It works well. According to research I've done, it compatible with any US vehicles between 02- 08 at least. I used 40% of this product + 60% Lucas Power Steering fluid. |

Question: | What is the differece of this to honda 08206-9002pe |
