13 best dot 3 brake fluids

DOT 3 brake fluid is a type of hydraulic oil used in automotive brake systems. Here is some information about DOT 3 brake fluid:

  1. Composition and Purpose:

    • DOT 3 brake fluid is a glycol-based hydraulic fluid used in hydraulic brake and clutch systems in vehicles.
    • It is designed to transmit the force applied to the brake pedal by the driver to the brake calipers or wheel cylinders, resulting in the application of brake pressure and the subsequent slowing or stopping of the vehicle.
  2. Boiling Point:

    • One of the critical characteristics of DOT 3 brake fluid is its boiling point. DOT 3 typically has a dry boiling point of around 401°F (205°C) and a wet boiling point of approximately 284°F (140°C).
    • The "dry" boiling point refers to the boiling point when the brake fluid is new and uncontaminated, while the "wet" boiling point takes into account the fact that brake fluid can absorb moisture over time, which can lower its boiling point.
  3. Hygroscopic Nature:

    • DOT 3 brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it has a tendency to absorb moisture from the surrounding environment over time.
    • This moisture absorption can lower the fluid's boiling point and affect its performance. It is important to replace brake fluid periodically to maintain braking efficiency.
  4. Compatibility:

    • DOT 3 brake fluid is compatible with most standard brake systems and is commonly used in passenger vehicles.
    • However, it is essential to use the type of brake fluid recommended by the vehicle manufacturer to ensure proper performance and safety.
  5. Maintenance:

    • Brake fluid should be checked regularly as part of routine vehicle maintenance. If it appears discolored or if the moisture content is high, it may need to be replaced.
    • Brake fluid replacement intervals can vary depending on the vehicle and driving conditions, so it's essential to consult the vehicle's owner's manual or a qualified mechanic for guidance.
  6. Safety Considerations:

    • Brake fluid is a critical component of the braking system, and its proper functioning is essential for vehicle safety.
    • Using the correct type of brake fluid and ensuring it is in good condition is crucial to maintaining effective braking performance and preventing brake system failures.

In summary, DOT 3 brake fluid is a glycol-based hydraulic oil used in automotive brake systems. It has specific boiling points, is hygroscopic, and requires regular maintenance to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the vehicle's braking system. Using the recommended brake fluid type and adhering to maintenance guidelines is essential for safe driving.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work on a forklift? it asks for sae j1703f, dot 3 or dot 4 specifications
Answer: Yes , it exceeds all dot 3=4 specs More expensive, why not stay with dot 3
Question: it can be use for bicycle
Answer: I’m assuming you need this for SRAM brakes? Dot 3 is dot 3, doesn’t matter which type of machine it’s going into. Read the spec of your bicycle brake fluid or don’t touch your bike
Question: being DOT 5 compatible , has any silicone
Answer: THIS IS NOT DOT 5 COMPATIBLE! It is important never to mistake DOT 5.1 (glycol-based) with DOT 5 which is silicone-based and should never be mixed with any other DOT fluid. This is compatible with everything EXCEPT DOT 5. Do not mix with DOT 5 ! What is the Difference between DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 Brake Fluid? DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are both glycol-based brake fluids and are used widely in the automotive and cycle industry. They are controlled by standards set out by the Department of Transportation (DOT) - hence the name. The main difference between these two brake fluids is in their boiling points. Part of the standards that need to be met by the manufacturers of DOT fluids are the minimum dry and wet boiling points. These are the minimum temperatures that the brake fluid must perform at before the brake fluid starts to boil, which can lead to complete brake failure. Let's take a look at the minimum boiling temperatures of DOT brake fluid as specified by the Department of Transportation. Various boiling temperatures for DOT brake fluid Remember, these are only the minimum standards. Brake fluid manufacturers can and often do improve on these figures and it is possible to find DOT 4 brake fluid with a higher boiling point than some DOT 5.1 fluids on the market. Since DOT 4 and 5.1 are both glycol-based brake fluids they are compatible with each other, which means they can be readily mixed without harming your brake system. It is important never to mistake DOT 5.1 (glycol-based) with DOT 5 which is silicone-based and should never be mixed with any other DOT fluid. User questions & answers

Question: Does this contain silicone
Answer: No. Silicone brake fluid is designated "DOT 5" and cannot EVER be mixed with any other type of brake fluid. This is regular DOT 3 brake fluid that is used in many passenger car and light truck applications. Check your owner's manual for your car's specific requirement. It may be DOT 4, in which case this is not the correct choice either.
Question: Is this good for 1998 chevy cavalier
Answer: Yes, just the very latest models use dot 4. Dot 3 is what you should use, and synthetic is best
Question: can synthetic and non-synthetic be mixed
Answer: Pretty much all brake fluid is synthetic, regardless of the label. Yes they can be mixed. Just don't mix with DOT5.
Question: Could i use prestone brake fluid dot 3 for my toyota avalon 04 & highlander 05? thanks
Answer: Of course you can, if you have no other choice. It will not cause any catastrophe failure or internal damage, under standard everyday breaking. However, it is highly recommended to use at least a DOT 4. It has a 30 to 50 degree higher boiling point. Toyota's breaking system is very efficient, and may not ever reach those high temperatures, unless you're in a prolonged, heavy breaking situation, like riding the break down a long, steep grade. Then you'll wish you went with higher grade fluid. It just depends on how lucky you're feeling.

PTE Brake Fluid Tester - calibrated for DOT 4 Brake fluids

Based on 678 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Staying safe and knowing that your car is in top condition is most important. Ideally, brake fluid should be checked regularly and changed every one to two years. As moisture seeps into the brake system through the brake hoses and seals the brake fluid will become contaminated and the danger of brake failure will increase. This pen-shaped brake fluid tester can easily help determine whether it's time for you to change your brake fluid. What to do: 1. Turn on the brake fluid tester by pressing the button. A green light should light up. If the light does not come on, it may be time to change a battery. 2. Unscrew the lid for the brake fluid reservoir, and take off the cap for the brake fluid tester. 3. Dip the test probes into the brake fluid and the LED lights will indicate the percentage of water in the brake fluid. 4. After testing, remember to screw the lid of the brake fluid reservoir back on tightly. 5. The tester will automatically power off after 12 seconds of inactivity. The LED lights will indicate the percentage of water in the brake fluid: Green: None Green/Yellow: Less than 1% Green /Yellow/Yellow: Approx. 2% Green/Yellow/Yellow/Red: Approx. 3% (Time to change brake fluid.) Green/Yellow/Yellow/Red/Red: Approx. 4% (Change brake fluid immediately). Please note:- This brake fluid tester is calibrated for DOT 4 brake fluid only, which is used in most cars produced since 2006. - Replace the battery if the green LED light no longer lights up after you press the button. - Wash the test probe with tap water after every use. - In case of skin contact with brake fluid, thoroughly wash the affected skin or clothing with water. - Do not expose brake fluid to the atmosphere for a long time as it is highly hygroscopic.

  • Quick and easy way to test for moisture content in the brake fluid; results appear in seconds!
  • LED light indicators show percentage of water in the brake fluid
  • Calibrated for cars using DOT 4 brake fluid only (found in most cars produced since 2006)
  • Takes 1 x AAA/1.5V battery (included)
  • Only takes seconds to know the results

User questions & answers

Question: Why does packaging and description indicate this product only works with dot4 if consumers are saying it works on dot3? does it really work on dot
Answer: This product did not work for me. Tested it on newly bought DOT3 and DOT4 brake fluid and the device said they were old
Question: How much the probes must be in the brake fluid? I found that variation will change the reading
Answer: I received my tester yesterday and I too have different readings depending on how deep I place the probes. follow the instructions, I have 4%, just the tips I have 1%. Is the readings false because I use Amsoil brake fluid?
Question: Can this also be used for transmission and power steering fluids
Answer: No, this tester is to find the amount of water in brake fluid. Most brake fluids are alcohol based, transmission fluid is oil-based.
Question: I use Valvoline Dot 3 and 4 brake fluid. It's both Dot 3 and 4. Will this tester work with that fluid
Answer: Upon further review I note that this tester only works for DOT 4 brake fluid. As of model year 2017 Toyota and Honda are using Dot3. My comments don't change except for excluding Toyota and Honda and that both have sophisticated on board computers that monitor all the systems-which are considerable in the Hybrids.

EVOLVE Electric/ Hybrid Vehicle DOT 3&4 BRAKE Fluid

CHAMPION EVOLVE Series X DOT 3/4 Brake Fluid is specifically developed for the needs of electric and hybrid vehicles. When these vehicle batteries are full, the brake system cannot take advantage of regenerative braking, leaving the brakes without support from engine braking and putting more demand on brake fluids. Electronic stability control, driver assist and other automation technologies also require quick and previse brake response, especially at low temperatures. These technologies perform best with a low viscosity fluid, with high dry and wet boiling points that also provides enhanced brake system corrosion protection.

Due to the electrical currents found near the brake system, lower conductivity brake fluid is needed to better protect against corrosion. Champion understands recent developments in ABS, ESP, AD, and ADAS vehicles will put greater emphasis on brake cycle time and frequency, creating needs for specialized brake fluids with lower viscosity and higher lubricity.

CHAMPION EVOLVE Series X DOT 3/4 Brake Fluid

When you select a genuine OEM fluid - you can rely on the high quality and effectiveness of the product and brand without having to guess if the product will work in sequence with your vehicle. Protecting your investment is important and choosing the right fluids can be challenging. So don't risk another minute by searching and buying something that might work. Stick with what you know and choose a genuine OEM Honda fluid.

  • Fits all Honda models
  • Do not add DOT 3 fluid to DOT 4 systems; do not mix with DOT 5 fluid
  • Avoid fluid contact with brake lining or painted surfaces
  • Follow vehicle manufacturer's recommendations when adding brake fluid
  • Keep brake fluid clean and dry; store brake fluid only in its original container

Question: I have honda accord2015 exl, how can i assure that my car has brake fluid dot 3 or 4? Cause in the manual says you can use dot 3 or
Answer: Honda 08203-0004 DOT 4 Brake Fluid.... YOU CAN USE THISS!!!
Question: How much brake fluid bottles do i need for either brake fluid exchange or full brake fluid flush on honda accord 2007 lx 4 cylinder sedan automatic
Answer: I think that one quart is enough.
Question: I use to think you only needed honda fluids till i talked the honda service department he said any dot 3 is fine. don't mix dot's or synthetic's
Answer: Correct. Brakes are so "important to society" that they take the confusion out of them and make them reasonably fool proof. The synthetics are good but have different hydroscopic characteristics. Therefore it is a bad idea to mix synthetic with conv.Don't put DOT3 into a DOT4 vehicle but DOT4 can go into a DOT3 vehicle. There is one more consideration. So may people know about Honda and Subaru finickiness with fluids that it's a smart idea to just get Honda fluid so you can truthfully, "I've put nothing but Honda fluids into this Honda>" Believe me. it'll pay off when you go to sell the car.
Question: What is the difference between this and the "Heavy Duty" variety
Answer: There is no difference. Both have the same catalog number, same SAE designation, same boiling point, etc. The older lots were labeled Heavy Duty, while the newer lots simply say Brake Fluid. I have on hand both types of bottles. Only the name on the label is different.
