12 best transmission additives

Transmission additives are chemical compounds designed to improve the performance and longevity of a vehicle's transmission system. They are typically used by mixing them with the transmission fluid. Here's what you need to know about transmission additives:

  1. Friction Modifiers: Many transmission additives contain friction modifiers that help reduce friction between moving parts in the transmission. This can lead to smoother gear shifts and less wear and tear on the transmission components.

  2. Seal Conditioners: Some additives include seal conditioners that help prevent leaks by rejuvenating and softening seals and gaskets. This can be especially helpful in older vehicles with aging seals.

  3. Cleaning Agents: Transmission additives often contain detergents and cleaning agents that help remove deposits, sludge, and varnish from the transmission. This can help maintain the cleanliness of the transmission and prevent clogs or blockages.

  4. Heat Resistance: Certain additives are formulated to improve the transmission fluid's heat resistance. High temperatures can lead to fluid breakdown and accelerated wear on transmission components, so additives that enhance heat resistance can be beneficial.

  5. Anti-Foaming Agents: Foaming can occur in transmission fluid, leading to reduced lubrication and potentially damaging the transmission. Anti-foaming additives help prevent this issue.

  6. Anti-Wear Properties: Some transmission additives contain anti-wear additives that form a protective layer on metal surfaces, reducing wear and extending the life of transmission components.

  7. Shift Improvement: If you're experiencing rough or delayed shifts, there are transmission additives specifically designed to improve shifting performance, making gear changes smoother.

  8. Fuel Efficiency: Some additives claim to improve fuel efficiency by reducing friction and improving overall transmission efficiency. However, the impact on fuel economy may vary depending on the vehicle and driving conditions.

  9. Compatibility: It's crucial to ensure that any transmission additive you use is compatible with the type of transmission fluid recommended for your vehicle. Not all additives work with all transmission fluids, so check the product label and your vehicle's manual.

  10. Professional Guidance: While transmission additives can offer benefits, it's essential to use them judiciously and as directed. If you're unsure about which additive to use or if your transmission is experiencing issues, it's best to consult a qualified mechanic or follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

Remember that regular maintenance, including changing the transmission fluid at recommended intervals, is essential for the health of your vehicle's transmission. Transmission additives should be used as a supplement to proper maintenance and not as a substitute for it.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work for a 05 Jeep Liberty 2.8l diesel
Answer: I'm not sure. I think if you can find the label online or somewhere it says on the back what it will work in, I think it should work for any automatic transmission, but you can always call the Lucas Oil company as well. I called them with a question about it. Can call Jeep company as well or ask mechanics' opinion.
Question: I have a 2006 Honda CRV - can I still use this? I know Honda Honda says to ONLY use Honda fluids.. But can I add this to it
Answer: I have many years of experience working on Honda's. I currently own a Civic SI, Prelude 5spd, and a 2005 4WD CR-V (identical to the 2006 model). The ATF-Z1 fluid used in the CR-V's transmission is a synthetic that has a "clinging property" for smooth shifting, even in cold weather. If your tranny is acting up, I recommend that you bring it in for service. Good Luck!
Question: he can use on any transmission fluid
Answer: No use only factory request
Question: Do you have to flush the transmission to use this,or can l just add this to existing transmission fluid, thanks for the feedback
Answer: After 50,000 miles you should change your transmission fluid (and filter unless it's a screen type) if it's still bright red. But If it's very dark red or even worse black then flush the transmission it's money well spent to save your transmission. Keep in mind it will look like red metallic paint that's just part of normal wear. If it's bright red then just drain some transmission fluid to keep it at the proper level. Overfilling an automatic transmission by just a few ounces can cause it to leak. Best of luck to you.

Hot Shot's Secret - HSSTSE32Z Shift Restore Automatic Transmission Additive 32 Fluid Ounce Bottle

Hot Shot's Secret

Based on 521 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The requirement for higher performance transmissions lubricants has increased considerably in recent years due to the introduction of new and sophisticated transmission systems. The transmission fluid serves as a hydraulic fluid, a heat transfer fluid and lubricating fluid. Over time, varnish and sticky residue (station) can form inhibiting the performance of the fluid. Our high performance ester formula is a unique lubricity and cleaning agent, that tenaciously attaches itself to all metal parts that it comes in contact with inside the transmission. The strong polarity pulls deposits off the metal surfaces and puts them back into solution. The metal in a transmission is nearly always positively charged while Transmission Station Eliminator is negatively charged. Attachment of a thin layer of Transmission Station Eliminator to all metals is natural and not dependent upon temperature, pressure or anything else. An added benefit is a reduction in temperature due to less friction on the critical moving parts.

  • Reduces operating temperatures
  • Eliminates station from all automatic & CVT transmissions
  • Reduces coefficient of friction
  • Transmission station eliminator minimizes metal to metal contact
  • Eliminates rust & corrosion
  • Smooths out gear changes
  • 5 year shelf life

User questions & answers

Question: Toyota 4Runner with a 3.4L engine, do I need to take any fluid out first or just add this in
Answer: If I were you, I'd replace ATF fluid (crankcase commonly takes around 2.5 liters of Mobil 3309, this is the one for Toyota); I'd add 2.0 liters of new ATF fluid and subsequently add the Liqui Moly 20040 ATF Additive. Check the fluid level is between mix / max line. Start engine, let engine gets hot (1 minute is enough) and them move shift slowly from Parking to Drive position several times (6-8 times); check the fluid level one more time (engine still running); add more ATF fluid in case of is required. I used to follow this process every 60,000 miles on my Suzuki SUV.
Question: Would this additive be suitable for Aisin Warner's TF-80SC; also known as AWF21, AF40-6 and TF-81SC
Answer: No!!! Despite some blurb that suggests it would work with a broad range of ATF it really only works with ATFIII- which is very common on ‘traditional ‘ Americans trannys but most modern automatic transmissions use different, synthetic fluids that this additive is not compatible with and may cause serious harm. Check carefully!
Question: The bottle said that it works for type ii and iii atf. would that work for 2002-2006 toyota camry as it uses type iv atf
Answer: Here is the info around ATF 4 vs ATF 3. +4 is now the recommended fluid. +3 came up to 00. The transmission isn't going to self destruct if it has +3 in it. +4 was designed to perform better over a longer peroid. From allpar: +4 is now the recommended fluid. . The transmission isn't going to self destruct if it has +3 in it. +4 was designed to perform better over a longer period of time. The goal in developing ATF+4 was to create a fluid that would match the performance characteristics of the current fluid, but would retain those characteristics for at least 100,000 miles. Research papers specifically note that the anti-shudder properties of ATF+3 are usually degraded enough by 30,000 miles to cause noticeable shudder. So basically ATF +4 will work with this product as ATF+3 and ATF+4 are basically the same except ATF+4 lasts longer. Note if you are using this product and you have not changed your transmission fluid in a long time say 50,000 miles or so you should do so as this product works better when you have new-clean transmission fluid.
Question: Do I add to transmission fluid when doing an atf fluid chsnge? Or do you add tobtransmission directly
Answer: Add directly to transmission...

XADO Revitalizant EX120 Conditioner for Automatic Gearbox & CVT Tiptronic Transmission Oil Treatment Additive (Box, Syringe 8 ml) Protectant Fluid - Restore Your ATF Metal Parts from Wear (Automatic)

Based on 559 reviews Check latest price

Product description

EX120 starts repairing scratched and worn metal as soon as it is added to an automatic transmission. Revitalizant acts as a catalyst for rebuilding and repairing metal in areas of excessive thermal energy. It activates the absorption process of carbon through the surface layer which results in the formation of metal carbides. Revitalizant rebuilds parts at a molecular level, atom-by-atom. A new durable protective coating is formed with the help of carbides and metal particles. Diffusion of the protective layer into the metal results in an extra durable gradient coating with positive pressing stress forming along the entire treated surface in the final stage of Revitalization.

Application:

Ensure the syringe is at room temperature so that contents flow freely. Add the necessary amount of the revitalizant into the transmission fluid reservoir. Drive the car normally. Revitalization is considered to be complete after 50 hours (approx. 1,500 km or 950 miles) of transmission operation.

Dosage:

5-8 ATF qts = 1 Syringe

9-12 ATF qts = 2 Syringes

13-15 ATF qts = 3 Syringes

Note:

A decrease in noise levels from the very first hour of operation is a sign that the revitalization process has begun.

Some automobiles with excessive transmission wear may require an extra dose of EX120, especially when improvement is noticed, but soon after problems return.

Revitalizant is compatible with all types of fluids for the automatic transmissions: Dexron, Mercon, Mopar, CVT, etc. It does not enter into chemical reactions with transmission fluids or change their viscosity, friction or other physical-chemical properties.

The protective metal-ceramic coating is formed on any operative mechanism, however, if the state of the mechanism (part) is in critical condition (100% wear), the worn part should be replaced.

  • Rebuilds And Restores Metal Parts And Protects Them From Future Wear.
  • Anti Friction Modifier. Eliminates Surfaces Defects & Protects From Extreme Heat
  • Stops Transmission Shudder, Reduces Noise & Vibration. Ultimate Stop Slipping Additive
  • Increases Performance Reliability And Prolongs Service Life Of Control Gears
  • Universal for Automatic, CVT, Tiptronic, Manumatic, Semi-Automatic Transmission

Question: Good for a 07 subaru forester w/130k . preventative maintenance my goal
Answer: Hello Francis - This most definitely would help in preventative maintenance in your 2007 Subaru Forester. If you have any other questions, give us a call at (800) 333-LUBE (5823), or send us a message at [email protected] Thank you
Question: Does this work in 1998 f
Answer: I can tell you that it has worked in a 2008 Toyota Sienna mini-van, no more funky, hesitant shifts. Quick and smooth now, dumped some in at about 145K, now there's 156K on it and it shifts great. Toyota has very strict requirements for ATF (their own), and I would think (don't know for sure) that it will be just fine for your Ford automatic transmission. You may want to go on to a Ford specific internet forum to see if somebody else has experience with your application, just to be sure. The transmission shop that recommended this stuff also told me to change out the throttle position sensor to also assist with shift hesitation and crispness. Best, Adam
Question: This says an ounce per quart but also that it replaces ATF fluid so could you simply put the entire 10 oz bottle in
Answer: One ounce per quart so if it holds 10 quarts (mine does) you can put in the whole bottle. In fact, it says that certain transmissions that you can put 2 ounces per quart. Not sure why these other people insist that you cannot.
Question: will this work for a 1995 ford taurus
Answer: Yes it will, the only ones it's not recommended for are CVT transmissions (mostly all new cars, including hybrids) and really old Ford products that used the old Ford spec fluid. It will work great in a 95 Taurus.

User questions & answers

Question: The 37 ton log splitter's hydraulic system uses aw 32 oil, okay to use? how much to use for a 12 gallon system
Answer: I can't give an actual amount but I dump a little in all my hydraulics, seems to help and never an issue.
Question: will this remove water
Answer: Sea Foam is a great product; there used to be just the original product, which was invented by a guy who owned a marina, and who worked on boat motors, which can reasonably be expected to have a lot of issues involving water contamination. I originally heard of the product from a friend who worked on garden tractor engines. He told me that, in his experience, Sea Foam was far superior to other lubricants. It could be used as a fuel stabilizer, such Sta-Bil, as you would use when putting your equipment into winter storage. He also told me that he had discovered that when dealing with an engine had seized up, he would put Sea Foam in with the oil, and manually turn the engine in the opposite direction that it would normally turn, and that would free up the engine. I have used Sea Foam ever since; I run it in the crankcases of my cars and all lawn equipment. I add it to my car's gas tank, and treat all the gasoline I have stored in gas cans, for use in my lawn equipment. And I never have any problems starting my tractors, or mowers in the spring. Because I think so highly of Sea Foam, I have tried several of the company's other products: Deep Creep, which is Sea Foam in an aerosol container, Trans Tune, which is used to dissolve varnish deposits in transmissions, clean and condition transmission fluid, and remove moisture, and is suitable for long term use. That is, you can use Trans Tune as a pre-service flush, or just leave it in your transmission, or other hydraulic equipment. I've had it in my '95 Lincoln's transmission for a number of years, now. I had originally intended to use it as a flush, drop the pan, empty the trans, and replace the gasket. My transmission guy advised me that since my car had over 100,000 miles on it, and the pan had never been off, to just leave the Trans Tune in. So that's what I have done. The Trans Tune addressed the rough shifting that caused me to try it in the first place, and has continued to protect my transmission ever since. It's been in the trans for a number of years. I believe Trans Tune, and the other Sea Foam products do what they say they will do.
Question: Should I use this in a new (2015) F-150 as a part of regular maintenance or wait till I notice "problems
Answer: I sure as hell wouldn't put this in a new (2015) transmission. Change the transmission fluid after maybe 10k miles, then every 40k (or 20k if you are towing a lot), and that is all you should ever need.
Question: Will adding seafoam TT-16 to my trans. fluid make for to much liquid volune
Answer: It is never a good idea to overfill an A/T, just siphon or drain an amount of trans fluid equal to the amount of Trans Tune your adding. If using as a filter change flush I add 1/2 can, drive for a few miles, then drop pan change fluid and filter, then add second half of can with proper amount of recommended fluid. I have followed that procedure for years on various makes and have had no problems. Hope this answer helps.

Based on 173 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The composition is designed for restoration, repair and antiwear protection of all types of automatic transmissions. Multifunctional oil additive. Atomic metal conditioner for automatic transmissions. Contains Revitalizant. While treatment the Revitalizant forms a ceramic-metal coating on the surfaces of friction metal parts of the automatic transmission (gears, bearings, distributors), thus modifying operating surfaces and compensating the ongoing wear of parts. As a result the geometry of parts is restored. Metal conditioner strengthens the lubricating film and provides an extra level of antiwear protection. This composition can be universally applied to all types of automatic transmissions including Tiptronic, Steptronic, CVT, DSG (“wet” clutch) etc.

  • Repair Transmission
  • Restores Surfaces and Protects Friction Metal Parts From Wear
  • Eliminates Surface Defects
  • Increases Performance Reliability and Prolongs Service Life Span of Control Mechanisms
  • Reduces Noise and Vibrations

Question: I have a 2013 Mercedes S550 with no transmission fluid dipstick.. how do I add it to my transmission
Answer: Hello although i had toyota truck i had a simalar problem trying to add any fluids....?Asan..,German ... it’s a racket they run... they snow the average Jie customer.. so the factory dealers can bring u in and make a killing on parts and labor... Ok in my case on the tranny there is a 24mm plug on passenger side that is used to refill. And on the bottom half there r 2 more plugs (one about 5” above the bottom one but offset) top one is used to ( check) the fluid level and bottom one to drain.. On the Zmax bottle adapt a 2-3ft small rubber hose to use to get to zmax in case. Go slow and get a good angle .. Make sure u check your tranny fluid 1st( u can get a finger wet) in hole. I found out that 90% of Asan tranny r shipped 3 arts low !!! and mine was... i hope u understand and good luck
Question: Can this be used in a boat transmission
Answer: Sorry but I am not sure.
