9 best cooling system additives

Cooling system additives are chemical compounds that can be added to a vehicle's cooling system to improve its performance and protect it from various issues related to heat and corrosion. These additives are typically used in automotive applications and are related to the category of automotive additives, oils, and fluids. Here is what you should know about cooling system additives:

  1. Coolant Composition: The primary purpose of a cooling system is to regulate the engine's temperature and prevent it from overheating. Most modern vehicles use a mixture of water and antifreeze (coolant) to achieve this. Cooling system additives are designed to be mixed with this coolant.

  2. Corrosion Protection: One of the essential functions of cooling system additives is to protect the various components of the cooling system, such as the radiator and water pump, from corrosion. These additives contain anti-corrosion agents that create a protective layer on the metal surfaces, preventing rust and corrosion.

  3. Anti-Foaming Agents: Some cooling system additives include anti-foaming agents to reduce the formation of air bubbles in the coolant. Excessive foaming can lead to reduced cooling efficiency.

  4. Water Pump Lubrication: Some additives include lubricants that help extend the life of the water pump, a critical component of the cooling system. Proper lubrication ensures that the pump operates smoothly and efficiently.

  5. Water Quality Management: In regions with hard water, cooling system additives can help manage the mineral buildup caused by calcium and magnesium deposits. These additives contain chelating agents that can reduce scaling and improve coolant performance.

  6. Temperature Regulation: Some additives are formulated to improve the heat transfer properties of the coolant, ensuring that the engine runs at an optimal temperature range. This can be particularly important for high-performance vehicles.

  7. Compatibility: Cooling system additives are designed to be compatible with the coolant used in the vehicle. It's important to choose an additive that matches the type of coolant recommended by the vehicle manufacturer (e.g., ethylene glycol-based or propylene glycol-based).

  8. Maintenance: Cooling system additives should be periodically added to the coolant to maintain their effectiveness. The frequency of addition may vary depending on the specific product and manufacturer recommendations.

  9. Overheating Prevention: Properly maintained cooling systems with the right additives can prevent overheating, which can lead to engine damage. Regular coolant checks and maintenance are crucial for preventing overheating-related issues.

  10. Fuel Efficiency: Maintaining a properly functioning cooling system can also contribute to better fuel efficiency, as an overheating engine can consume more fuel.

In summary, cooling system additives are an important part of vehicle maintenance, especially in regions with extreme temperatures or water quality issues. They help protect the cooling system from corrosion, improve heat transfer, and ensure that the engine operates at an optimal temperature. Using the right cooling system additive and following manufacturer recommendations for maintenance can help extend the life of your vehicle's cooling system and prevent costly repairs.

User questions & answers

Question: Do I add this to the reservoir or the radiator
Answer: https://engineoil.api.org/Directory/EolcsResultsDetail?accountId=-1&companyId=11574&resultsUrl=%2FDirectory%2FEolcsResults%3FaccountId%3D-1 I know they only got their professional line certified. But really, all the logo does is give more money to the big boys. Redline oils have been around long enough and there are thousands of people that will tell you their products are as good as they come. I just put it into my brand-new 2018 Eclipse Cross and my 1997 3000GT VR4 uses Redline 5w30 for years. Redline says this to the warranty question Q: WILL USING RED LINE PRODUCTS VOID MY VEHICLE'S FACTORY WARRANTY? Using the appropriate Red Line product shouldn't invalidate your vehicle's warranty and question the mechanic or service manager that says so.
Question: Can I use this with just distilled water in the winter without using antifreeze
Answer: Yes, although I don't know why you would want to. Motorcycle oils are already pretty rich in Z and P. Now if you are deciding to run a 15w40 diesel oil, you may want to boost Z and P slightly if it is CK-4, and this product is appropriate for that. An SG, SH or even most SL motorcycle oils are all you need.
Question: Compatible with hoat (orange) coolant
Answer: No, use 5W-30 synthetic oil that meets GM4718M specifications or whatever is specified in your owners manual. The excess zinc and phosphate in Redline break-in oil is meant for hot rods with engines from the 1960's to 1980's with flat tappet camshafts, yours is a roller tappet engine. You could possibly cause damage to your oxygen sensors and catalytic converters if you use this product in your Cadillac. Look for oil that says Dexos1 (Dexos2 is for diesels) but remember to check that the oil meets GM4718M specs and is a 5W-30 synthetic.
Question: How much will a 12 once bottle treat? I have a 5 gallon system and will be adding it to used coolant
Answer: This oil is to break in a new engine. The engine in your new car was broken in at the manufacturer. Use oil that the manufacturer suggest.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this work for the red colored coolant
Answer: i don't know if you are supposed to use vc-8 to recondition pre charged coolant. I Use Havoline green HD conventional coolant that is not pre charged and same with gold.
Question: Ford 7.3 L IDI, will be flushing the radiator and changing the coolant. About how many bottles should I buy
Answer: If you are changing the coolant, just purchase coolant with the additive already in it. If you are intent to use standard antifreeze, it will take four bottles of the VC-8 to get you in the protected range according to test strips. Once you have established protection, test your antifreeze yearly with test strips and ad VC-8 if needed.
Question: Can this be mixed with VC
Answer: I use the VC8 with old school green anti freeze. I do know if you can use it with the VC12/ gold? I would check the specs of VC12
Question: So is this an additive that can be added to the Motorcraft Gold
Answer: The gold doesn't need it unless your nitrate level gets below 800ppm. This is for the early diesels running green. Most guys running newer diesels flush the gold out (real good) with distilled water and switch to Cat EC-1 ELC because the silicates drop out of suspension and clog the oil coolers in the 6.0 & 6.4Here's a link http://www.thedieselstop.com/forums/f23/truth-about-vc-8-coolant-additives-226187/

User questions & answers

Question: Que cantidad de Cooling System Repair se pone al motor y cada cuanto tiempo
Answer: Una botella a la vez y aproximadamente una vez cada 5000 millas. Gracias,
Question: Has anyone us this on Diesel engine for combustion leaking into coolant
Answer: I used it on a semi for a pump leak. It’s not a permanent fix. But it can get you a couple of days to get you home.
Question: I have a leak in the bottom left of my radiator ... Not sure if its the radiator or the hose its kinda hard to tell. runs hot in traffic
Answer: Hmmm... Hose leaks are hard to stop....... It's usually better to replace the hose.... If it is the radiator, this will more than likely work..... Are you running hot when the coolant is low? or are you running hot most of the time? This won't do anything to help a radiator that does not cool efficiently, the radiator would need to be replaced.
Question: Will using this product do anything to tear up ur vehicle if ur not sure it has a leak
Answer: Shouldn't, only flows through the closed cooling system. I had a freeze plug leaking, was too large of a leak for this to fix, noticed no adverse effects after replacing freeze plug.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i use this in a 2013 wrx 2.5 turbo or is only for non-turbos
Answer: I was just at a Subaru dealership and was going to buy this along with Subaru coolant for my 2006 WRX 2.5l Turbo, and the parts counter guy double checked with a tech in the back who said he stopped using this with turbo cars, so I didn't buy it. I also don't have any leaks or anything along those lines. I think they used to use this every coolant change as part of it but not anymore on the Turbo models.
Question: Can I add this to my 2000 GMC Jimmy radiator for the same purpose? I figure if it works for Subaru, it should work for other car
Answer: This is just a Subaru labeled version of Holt's Radweld @ holtsauto.com, so check their website for more info. I did some research, and yes, Subaru specifies it for the 2.5L engine, due to a common gasket failure, perhaps to get thru the warranty period before it fails. It is made in England, and contains borax and linseed meal. I used it in my 1992 Firebird, and added two bottles because it has a larger coolant capacity.Holt's claims to contains rust inhibitor, and the sealant particles are not likely to clog your radiator or heater core, so it can be used as a preventative to seal minor leaks, should they occur. I think it is better than other products on the market. The current price here is high, so I would try to find an equivalent product at your local auto parts store.
Question: I was wondering if i can use 2 containers instead of 1? i have a a 04 forester and it has a small leak. i used 1 already but did not seal
Answer: this will not seal your radiator. it is a conditioner to improve the mixture of the coolant to reduse build up of bad coolant deposits. i would advise to replace whatever is causeing it to leak. do no use stop leak additives you can create huge problems for your forester and possible kill the engine
Question: Do I only put in 1 bottle per fluid change/flush
Answer: Only 1 bottle is required per fluid change...

User questions & answers

Question: Would it seal a broken heater core
Answer: Bar's Leaks J-100 DiFM Cooling System Treatment - 5 Grams Bar's Leaks J-100 DiFM Cooling System Treatment - 5 Grams Would it seal a broken heater core? asked on December 6, 2018 Hello. Thank you for your question and for considering Bar's Leaks Cooling System Treatment (part number J-100) to help with a heater core issue. We aren't sure what you mean by "broken" heater core, but can tell you that if it has a small leak then yes, we would expect these tablets to help seal it. However, if it has a more severe leak, such as a hole in it that is causing coolant to pour right out, that may be a more difficult seal to make and may require a stronger product or a physical/mechanical repair. To use these 5 gram tablets, install 4 tablets per gallon of coolant capacity. If you have not already purchased these tablets, you may also want to consider our part number HDC - Radiator Stop Leak Tablets. These tablets are made of the same materials as the J-100, but they are 10 gram tablets that come 6 to a package, and require only 2 tablets per gallon of coolant. Please note that cooling systems that are dirty or partially clogged should be thoroughly cleaned before using either of these products. If you haven't run a chemical cooling system flush through the system in the last three to four years, we suggest you do so now. Flushing with water will remove any loose dirt or sediment in the coolant, but if there is any mineral or scale built up inside your vehicle's cooling system, it would require a chemical flush to dissolve and remove those particles. Installing our products into a clean system gives us the best chance to help you. If you have any other questions or we may be of further assistance, please feel free to call our Tech Support Team at 1-800-345-6572. Question: Is this safe to use on a power stroke diesel where the EGR cooler is dripping
Answer: According to The manufacturer, Bars Products, This product is compatible and safe to use with all antifreeze types and in all water cooled engines. Fun Fact: Many new car manufacturers routinely use this in all their new vehicles before shipment. Just to be sure you understand what you're buying here... This is a canister of 100 tabs. If you don't need to buy for a fleet, you would be better of to buy the six pack of tablets... (HDC). Here is thew link on +Amazon to the HDC. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000KKND3Q?ref=myi_title_dp
Question: How long does it work
Answer: So far it's been treated with this since about November of 2018 and is sealed and working good with no visible leaks. I learned to do exactly as the instructions states for it to work as it should. To remove the upper radiator hose and install the recommended amount of sealant tablets. I've been watching close for a coolant leak and it does work as described with no leaks. It does not appear to cause cooling system problems but does seem to help in every known way so far.
Question: Will this plug or restrict the heater core or thermostat
Answer: Thanks for your question and for considering Bar's Leaks DiFM Cooling System Treatment (part number J-100) to help with your automotive needs. When installed into a clean cooling system, following the proper dosage and instructions, we would not expect this product to plug or restrict any portion of your cooling system. If you haven't chemically flushed your vehicle's cooling system in the last three to four years, we recommend you consider doing so now. Flushing with water will remove anything that is in suspension in your coolant, but if there is any scale or mineral build up inside the system, a chemical flush would be required to dissolve that scale and clean the system. If you have any other questions or would like additional information, please feel free to contact our Tech Support team at 1-800-345-6572. We are here to assist you Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm, Eastern time.

Question: Will this affect the freezing point of antifreeze? I have 2 gallons of 50/50 that i use to top off all the cars. Can I mix this right in as an extra
Answer: if your area experiences below zero temps , i would drain a half of a gallon off the system , add the anti-rust and put the rest with full strength antifreeze. if it dont get that cold there then just drain off enough to fit just the anti rust in and top it off with your 50/50.
