13 best dirt bike hitch carriers
Dirt bike hitch carriers are specialized accessories designed for transporting dirt bikes, motocross bikes, or lightweight motorcycles using a vehicle's hitch receiver. These carriers provide a convenient and efficient way to transport motorcycles, especially when you don't want to use a traditional trailer or a truck bed. Here's what you need to know about dirt bike hitch carriers:
Design: Dirt bike hitch carriers are typically constructed from sturdy materials like steel or aluminum. They are designed to attach to the vehicle's hitch receiver and provide a platform for securely holding and transporting a dirt bike.
Loading Ramps: Many dirt bike hitch carriers come with integrated loading ramps. These ramps make it easier to load and unload the motorcycle onto the carrier. It's essential to ensure that the ramp is long enough and has a suitable weight capacity for your bike.
Hitch Compatibility: When purchasing a dirt bike hitch carrier, make sure it's compatible with your vehicle's hitch receiver. Hitch carriers come in various sizes to fit different hitch receiver sizes (e.g., 1.25-inch or 2-inch receivers).
Weight Capacity: Each hitch carrier has a specified weight capacity, which indicates the maximum weight it can safely support. Ensure that the carrier's weight capacity is suitable for your dirt bike's weight.
Securing Mechanisms: Dirt bike hitch carriers typically include securing mechanisms to keep the motorcycle in place during transport. This may include tie-down straps, wheel chocks, or other clamping systems. Properly securing the bike is crucial for safe transportation.
Folding or Tilting Feature: Some hitch carriers offer folding or tilting features, allowing you to access the vehicle's rear hatch or trunk without having to remove the carrier. This can be convenient when you need access to the vehicle's cargo area.
Lighting and Visibility: Since the carrier partially obstructs the vehicle's tail lights and license plate, it's essential to use auxiliary lighting and license plate brackets to maintain visibility and comply with road safety regulations.
Vehicle Clearance: Be aware of the added length and clearance requirements when using a dirt bike hitch carrier. This can affect your vehicle's maneuverability and parking options.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as checking bolts and fasteners for tightness and inspecting straps and securing mechanisms, is essential to ensure the carrier's continued reliability and safety.
Legal Considerations: Familiarize yourself with local and state regulations regarding the use of dirt bike hitch carriers, including weight limits, lighting requirements, and any other legal obligations.
In summary, dirt bike hitch carriers are useful accessories for safely and efficiently transporting dirt bikes and lightweight motorcycles using a vehicle's hitch receiver. They come in various designs and configurations, so it's essential to choose one that is compatible with your motorcycle, vehicle, and transportation needs. Always prioritize safety by properly securing the bike and complying with legal requirements.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the distance from the center of the hitch pin (the pin that holds this into the receiver), to the center of the wheel track when installed |
Answer: | I've put roughly 5000 miles on mine with no problems. KTM 500. Just check the bolts that stabilize the post to the receiver occasionally and run a ratchet strap from the bike to the bumper to keep it from rocking. |
Question: | I have an fj cruiser and im curious does this ramp stick out far enough where the spare tire wont get in the way |
Answer: | 103 years old.... |
Question: | Traveling frm alaska to california 3200mi will this hold up? wr250r is the bike |
Answer: | Part of the “class” requirement is related to the tongue weight. This is the amount of weight that can weigh down vertically on the steel receiver that you put the bar into for this carrier. The 3500 lbs you’re referring to is the towing rating. This has nothing to do with how much weight can be loaded down on the receiver, which is the only important thing when considering something like this that is suspended in the air and not in contact with the ground, like a trailer would be. In other words, this may fit your receiver, but you wouldn’t be able to approach the 500 lb weight capacity without risking failure. |
Question: | how old do you have to be |
Answer: | I think it would work. It sticks out a good distance but if it was too close, you can buy a hitch extension to make it work. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will a dirtbike stand on its own on the carrier before being tied down |
Answer: | No, I would have a second person hold the bike while a couple of tie downs are put on. Be careful the threads aren't clean and the bolts are too soft. I used it once, one of the bolts sheared off. Replaced the bolts with stainless steel, and chased the threads with a tap; M10 - 1.5 |
Question: | Can anyone give me an ID measurement of the hitch tube |
Answer: | ITS EXACTLY 1-3/4" INSIDE TUBE SQUARE ON MINE |
Question: | How far does the bike sit from the tow hitch |
Answer: | I would say it sits about a foot away from the hitch |
Question: | how wide is the inside of the carriers track? The product discription says 7 inches, but some reviewers say more like |
Answer: | Yeah I would say from the outside is 7 inches and the inside is more like 5. Dirt bike cleats kind of hang on the rails an get squished when you ratchet it down. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are there tie down loops at the front or rear of the hauler, or just in the middle |
Answer: | Tie down loops are just in the middle. |
Question: | Ramp is too short. Any reccomendation for a longer fold ramp that will attach to this 5 1/4"W carrier. Most ramps are designed to attach to a tailgate |
Answer: | I agree, the ramp is too short and falls off too easily |
Question: | shows a pin and looks like it is part of the anti-wobble anti-tilt device, says pin not included so how or where can I find the correct pin |
Answer: | You are good they just did not take their design one step further. The pin they included is your hitch pin. You have to shim the anti lock system inside the hitch solidly in place. Then slide the hitch into the receiver and carefully insert the hitch pin. They should have tack welded the anti tilt device inside the hitch. Once you get past that it’s a nice carrier. FYI the anti tilt is not needed but a nice to have. |
Question: | I’m an avid motorcycle rider, but i have a mouse problem at home. could i use this rack to catch mice? or use the rack to train my cat to catch mice |
Answer: | This rack is perfect for catching mice, but I think you’ll find better use in training your cat. Put this thing in an open space and start your cat on some basic agility drills. After they’ve mastered the drills on the ground lean the rack up against a wall and continue having your cat practice climbing. While the cat is practicing climbing you need to throw things at the cat. I found that water bottles, shoes, and soap work best. The reason for this is mice climb walls, so your cat needs to practice climbing. Sometimes your cat will encounter situations where it could fall off a wall while chasing the mice; throwing things at the cat will help it be better prepared for situations where it could fall off. Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this work with a rebel 250 (330 pounds fully loaded |
Answer: | Pretty sure it would, I have a Yamaha 600 and that fits |
Question: | Im put my sportbike on this 2020 r |
Answer: | How much does the “sportbike” weigh? If it’s more than 500 pounds (approx 225kg) the answer is no. There is also a second factor. What is vehicle manufacturer’s tow hitch dead weight rating? This is different from the tow rating. The dead weight rating is the maximum downward weight recommended for tow hitch. This is the force exerted on the hitch if you (or the sportbike) stood directly on the tow hitch. This number varies greatly depending on the type of vehicle. Small cars might be only 300 pounds - or even zero. Large SUV’s might be 1500 pounds - or more. This information is usually found in the ovehicle owner’s manual. You can not safely exceed that deadweight hitch rating. The weight of the bike carrier must be considered in the calculation. |
Question: | For a 600cc bike, that weighs 400 lbs, is there a way to keep the load stable |
Answer: | My 250 makes the entire carrier sway around |
Question: | Will a Yamaha roadstar 1700 fit |
Answer: | Sure it would fit, it’s a very nice rack check the weight of your bike |

Question: | I have a 06 gsxr 1000 will this support the weight i believe the bike is just under 500 lbs |
Answer: | I was thinking mine did (I've only used it once since I bought it). Been just riding to the local trail. I still had some play in it. So, I bought a $10 anti-rattle hitch tightener. One extra step each time to put on/take off. But, it holds it solid! Hope that helps? |
Question: | Will this work on a 2in hitch 2019 Ford F |
Answer: | I use an anti-rattle thing-a-ma-jig. Works great! The only thing that sucks is once you tighten it down, you need to remove it if you want to take the bike rack out! Pick your battles! I just keep the right wrench in my vehicle for such an occasion. |
Question: | How much does this rack weigh |
Answer: | FL has toll roads that are PAY BY PLATE ONLY. They want that money. Towing a travel trailer blocks the license plate from view but have their own plate, there is no law against hauling a trailer that is not registered to you such as a u-haul trailer you rent, or a trailer you are borrowing from a friend. If you drive on a toll road, whoever the trailer is registered to will be getting the bill. |
Question: | I have a ninja 400 will this hold it and do it come with the straps to tie down the bike |
Answer: | My hubby assembled this in about 15 minutes and said it wasn't hard at all (He IS very capable with tools). As far as using the bike, I LOVE THIS BIKE RACK! I am a 61 year old female in fairly good shape and from the time I walk out into the garage and the time I go back in the house, it takes me less than 10 minutes to put the bike rack on the car, place the locking bolt (which I definitely would recommend) and put the bike on the rack. Taking the bike off and putting it on takes 10-20 seconds. The only complaint I might have is that sometimes loosening the clamps that push down to hold the bike on the rack can be hard to loosen when removing the bike. They are made like a rachet that moves up and down the center shaft, so if you push them down on the bike really hard, which of course is what you want to do, they can be hard to 'squeeze' to open the clamp.....BUT, remember, I have 61 year old hands and not much strength in them. My spouse tells a little WD-40 might help, so we'll try that next time we use the rack. But don't let this one small thing change your opinion. I absolutely love this bike rack and would never buy any other, as a matter of fact, we have two of them! |
