13 best rf brake controllers

An RF brake controller, also known as a radio frequency brake controller, is a type of device used in towing setups to control the trailer's electric brakes. These controllers are designed to provide a wireless and convenient way to activate and adjust the trailer's brakes, improving the safety and control of the towing vehicle and trailer. Here are some key points about RF brake controllers:

  1. Wireless Operation: RF brake controllers eliminate the need for a physical connection between the towing vehicle and the trailer. Instead of using traditional wired connections, they communicate wirelessly using radio frequency signals.

  2. Ease of Installation: Installing an RF brake controller is generally easier compared to traditional brake controllers that require wiring and connections to the towing vehicle's electrical system. This wireless system typically involves a transmitter in the towing vehicle and a receiver in the trailer.

  3. Adjustability: RF brake controllers often allow for precise adjustment of the trailer's brake force. This means that the driver can fine-tune the braking power applied to the trailer to suit different road conditions and loads.

  4. Compatibility: These controllers are designed to be compatible with a wide range of trailers, including utility trailers, camper trailers, and boat trailers. They work with trailers equipped with electric brakes.

  5. User-Friendly Interface: RF brake controllers typically come with user-friendly interfaces, which can include digital displays and control buttons. This makes it easy for the driver to monitor and adjust the brake settings as needed.

  6. Improved Safety: The ability to control the trailer's brakes wirelessly enhances safety during towing. It allows the driver to apply the trailer's brakes independently, preventing sway and providing better control when slowing down or coming to a stop.

  7. Portability: Since there are no permanent wired connections, RF brake controllers can be easily transferred between different towing vehicles, making them a versatile choice for those who tow with multiple vehicles.

It's important to note that while RF brake controllers offer convenience and ease of installation, they may require periodic maintenance to ensure proper functionality. Batteries in the transmitter and receiver units should be checked and replaced as needed to avoid signal loss or interruptions.

When considering an RF brake controller, be sure to choose a reputable brand and model that is suitable for your specific towing needs and trailer size. Additionally, always follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation and use to ensure safe and effective trailer braking control.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this work with adaptive cruise control
Answer: The unit will fit, but you need to check to see what cable is correct for your Toyota. The cable will attach to the controller, and connect it to a trailer brake port usually found under the dash of your rig. The Tekonsha site has a tool that will help you determine what connector you need for your vehicle. Then you can order the connector cable on Amazon.
Question: I have a 4 way plug spliced into a 7 way plug that does my lights etc for what will be my brake pin csn i run a live 12 volt feed to plug
Answer: When your order it you put in what kind of vehicle you have
Question: Is it possible to use in a rental environment, where each user downloads the app for a rental, uses the receiver and then the next user does the same
Answer: John, it will work. I guess you are saying if you are installing this in. I just use it and it work great. I call Tekonsha tech support with question. Since my truck does not have the plug. I had to hard wire my own plug that came with the kit. One wire I did not have to use. Out of the five wires I only had to use 4 of them. The lady email me instruction for my 2008 Chevy 1500. She is very helpful. I tow a toy hauler with two motorcycle. Three setting plus to go to manual setting which I like. Plus there is a button on the right that I use like a trolly brake. (Use to drive a tractor). With that button, slowly pushing on it, I was using just the trailer to stop me or to straighten out the trailer if it sway.
Question: For the accelerometer to work properly, does the unit have to be installed in a certain orientation? Promaster 7 way connector is rotated 90 degrees
Answer: You need to get the wire harness for your make of vehicle. The adaptor harnesses are on the Amazon page for the Controller. They are less than $15.00. This is a good controller.

Question: Does this fit a 2013 ram 3500 slt
Answer: The CURT applies trailer brakes in accordance with vehicle deceleration. Built in accelerometers sense deceleration and apply trailer brakes according to the amount of deceleration. Small speed changes, letting off the gas etc, may not be enough to actuate trailer brakes. I have used cruise control, normal, with no interference or tugging from trailer brakes as speed is increased and decreased by the cruise control. This is based on my use experience only.
Question: According to the wiring diagrams the controller is powered directly from the battery. Is the unit then powered all the time
Answer: You would need to run a 12 volt 30-40 amp fused auxillary feed and a 30-40 amp ground line to the 7pin.
Question: do the brakes engage when backing up
Answer: Yes. Since Echo is not hardwired to a singular vehicle, it can be used in that environment. Note: the current product warranty does not cover commercial use, so keep that in mind.
Question: does this come with any plut/pigtail for wiring into vehicle system
Answer: No, my tacoma’s 7-pin is rotated 90° clockwise and it works fine.

CURT Electrical Trailer Brake Controllers

CURT offers several different trailer brake controller models to provide you with a solution that fits your unique towing setup and budget. We carry time-based and inertia-based or proportional brake controllers.

All CURT trailer brake controllers are designed for easy installation. Most use our quick plug harnesses, and each comes with its own set of features and benefits.

For a helpful guide in selecting a brake controller, see below.

Two types of brake controllers:

CURT electric brake controllers fall into one of two categories: inertia-based or time-based. These refer to the method of activation used by the brake controller. Both types are safe and effective for stopping a trailer. However, depending on your needs, one may be preferred over the other.

Inertia-based

Inertia-based or proportional trailer brake controllers use an electronic mechanism, called an accelerometer, to detect the momentum of the vehicle-trailer combination while braking. The controller accentuates the trailer brakes in proportion to the momentum, allowing for a smooth, highly efficient stop.

Time-based

Time-based activation is less complex than inertia-based. When stopping, a time-based brake controller accentuates the trailer brakes based on whatever gain setting is input by the driver. Although simple in operation, time-based trailer brake controllers are effective and provide a more budget-friendly option.

Heavy-duty towing

If you are towing a heavy trailer or cargo, an inertia-based brake controller will provide superior control to make smoother stops and to put less strain on your vehicle.

Light-duty towing

If you’re towing a simple boat trailer or popup camper, a time-based trailer brake controller may be sufficient. CURT time-based controllers are easily adjustable for varying loads.

Frequent towing

If you’re planning to tow often, an inertia-based brake controller is recommended. The sophisticated operation will help prolong the life of your vehicle and trailer.

Occasional towing

If you only plan to tow a few times a year, such as for family camping trips during the summer, a time-based brake controller is an effective and budget-conscious option.

Spectrum Electric Trailer Brake Controller

The CURT Spectrum trailer brake controller provides powerful brake operation at your fingertips, featuring a simple, dash-integrated knob with a separate computer module.

The knob has 10 tri-color LEDs and a rotary, push-button to control and monitor all trailer brake activity.

The separate computer module can be mounted out of sight, providing smooth, responsive braking and promoting a true factory look and feel on the dash of your vehicle.

Simple, rotary knob

All trailer brake settings and conditions are communicated through the simple but powerful rotary knob of the Spectrum trailer brake controller. It provides highly responsive operation without cluttering up the look of your vehicle’s dash.

Ramp-up LED display

The Spectrum brake controller displays all settings, preferences and operations through 10 tri-color LED lights. Encircling the knob control, the lights flash, ramp up and change color based on the various braking conditions and user input.

Two mounting options

The rotary knob can be mounted onto the dash for a completely integrated look with the vehicle’s other controls. Each brake controller comes with hardware for a drill mount, as well as an adhesive pad for a surface, stick-on mount.

Out-of-sight module

The main module that controls and operates the trailer brakes is separate from the rotary knob, allowing you to mount it out of sight. This promotes a factory look and feel in the interior of your vehicle, unlike most other aftermarket brake controllers.

Highly responsive

The Spectrum electric trailer brake controller not only has a subtle, integrated design, but it also provides intelligent, responsive braking. It uses an advanced accelerometer circuit to measure the inertia of the vehicle on three separate planes. It is able to sense the motion of the vehicle and trailer while braking, to provide proportional power for a smooth, safe stop.

Manual override

The Spectrum brake controller also gives the driver advanced control over the vehicle-trailer combination, providing an easily accessible manual override. The rotary knob itself has a built-in push-button feature that manually applies the trailer brakes whenever needed to maintain full control over the towing setup.

Automatic leveling

With its smart braking operation, the Spectrum is easy to set up for any towing scenario, including a diverse combination of vehicles and trailers. Question: Empty or 14,000 lb load! How will this unit do as a set it and forget it option when my weights very so much
Answer: Good evening,. We have customers that tow upto 20000 pounds. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at 3193104959. Carlton Autowbrake Team Member
Question: Will this work on a dump trailer where the load will different every time
Answer: Autowbrake does integrate with the breakaway switch. The breakaway is an emergency feature and is designed to activate only when the trailer disconnects from the tow vehicle accidentally when being towed. The Autowbrake provides trailer braking under normal towing conditions.
Question: It has three settings 3 is up to 12000 my toy hauler loaded is around 14500 with this still work
Answer: I do not believe there is a wire harness for the G63. It would have to cut and spliced into your vehicle. There are issues installing these in Mercedes that could fry your onboard computer system if done incorrectly. I recommend a different avenue like the Curt Echo that links to your smart phone through Bluetooth. User questions & answers

Question: What adapter cable is required for a 2002 Suburban 3.5l 4x
Answer: it's not so much an issue of fitting as much as making sure you get the right wiring harness for your truck which is normally sold separate from this unit. So just do a search for your trucks harness. You can even go to the manufacturers website and look up the right harness model number then search for it on Amazon. Great unit you'll love it.
Question: I have a 2013 silverado 1500 lt. has factory towing package. do i need an additional harness? how do i found out which one if so
Answer: Manufacture states power draw is so low (3.6 milliamps when not in use) that it would take 3-4 months to drain battery if allowed to sit without starting. Then would be the time they would recommend disconnecting unit from vehicle wiring.
Question: Does it have a digital read out to tell you what degree it's currently adjusted to
Answer: Most electric brakes will not "engage" when driving in reverse. The magnets will still grab, yes, but the camming action that forces the shoes to the drums is reversed and thus should not cause any issues.
Question: is this unit "proportional" or "timed
Answer: It comes with a pigtail that plugs into back of unit and stranded wires on the other end to hook up to the car. If you have a newer vehicle that is prewired for electric brakes, you can purchase a pigtail to plug into the prewired side plug. My vehicle came with that pigtail in the glove box when I bought it.

User questions & answers

Question: does it come with any wiring or does that have to be purchased separately
Answer: It comes with everything needed to do the job, it is a plug-and-play set up.
Question: Does this fit 2015 Nissan Titan
Answer: This is not a controller that comes with ready fit harness for my Toyota. I found that my truck came with a tow package and there was a Toyota harness under the dash. I had to order an adapter plug the use the factory harness on my truck. I then had to make a bracket to mount under my dash. It works great but I had to do a lot of research to find the harness to adapt the controller. I got the adapter from e-trailer.
Question: why wont it work with brake pedal but will with manual switch
Answer: I HOOKED UP THE RED BRAKE LIGHT WIRE TO THE SECONDARY SIDE OF THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH UNDER MY DASH above my brake pedal. The easiest way to tell which wire to tie it too is with a meter. With the brake out, use a DC volt meter by putting one meter lead on one of the brake light switch wires and the other lead to a metal bolt or screw on your vehicle. If the meter reads 12 volts then you have found the primary or hot side of the switch. This means the other switch wire is the one you need to tie your red wire into. Next you need to tie the white wire from the brake controller harness to a ground. A ground will be any bolt or screw to the car frame. Or if you have a long enough wire you should run it back to the negative post on the battery. The black wire from the harness needs to run to a circuit breaker that is tied to the positive side of the battery. You can get the breaker at a auto parts store. Ask for a 20 amp breaker. The blue wire goes to the trailer brake wire. If doesn't work for you then there may be a defect in the unit. Make sure none of your wires are shorted to the frame or each other. Hope this helps.

User questions & answers

Question: Will the harness included fit 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe "old Body Style
Answer: It will not plug and play. The 88-98 pu and 92-99 or classic 2000 SUV do not have a plug in harness. There are blunt cut wires under the dash if it has the tow package that will need to be sliced to the brake controller harness. There are wires under the hood that then need to be connected to the fuse block and fuses installed in the correct position of the fuse block.
Question: Does the controller come with a mounting bracket? There's an "also bought..." comment indicating a bracket for sale with this unit
Answer: Yes, it comes with a sturdy metal mounting bracket and a plastic shell (if you want to use it instead for tool free removal).
Question: Does this come with the 3025-p harness? i need the vehicle specific harness 3025-p. it looks like that harness is pictured, just want to be sure
Answer: Yes it includes the GM harness

User questions & answers

Question: Does it came with the oem wiring harneses ? i have a toyota
Answer: The 51170 is a trailer brake controller while the 55567 is a 4 pin connector for trailer lights only (not brakes). If you have trailer brakes you need a different wiring set up than the 4-pin harness. If you don't have trailer brakes you don't need the 51170 controller
Question: Do they sell a plug-n-play wiring harness for a 2020 Ford F
Answer: Yes, the lights on the controller are dimmable, but at the lowest setting they’re still pretty bright. It does flash green lights when you first start up and that lets you know you’re not connected to a trailer. When you brake without a trailer connected, it has a blue light that will come on. Still fairly bright. I put a layer of “Sharpie” over the lights to dim them somewhat more as I mounted my controller where I can see it easily and adjust it if need be. Seems to work well.
Question: Will it work on a tacoma trd pro
Answer: 6’ or so
Question: Would this work on a Sprinter with a pre-wired 7 pin? i have a 4 wire plug under the driver seat for a brake controller
Answer: Yes. This is required in the event the trailer swaying or jackknifing out of control. The theory is you push the button and it pulls back on your rig this straightening it out to regain control. Not sure we would be quick to remove our hands from the wheel but DOT prefers that the trailer can be controlled separately. This requires the control in an unobstructed location.

User questions & answers

Question: How long is the warranty
Answer: No this is not plug and play on a 1995 GM full sized truck. If the truck is equipped with a factory tow haul package then it should have trailer brake wiring taped back on the harness coming from the fuse block on the drivers fender and there’s also wiring taped back at the rear driver side of the frame. If it’s not there then you will have to wire the entire length of the truck.
Question: What does this unit come with
Answer: I think so it worked great on 2016 Silverado with the Tekonsha adapter. Plugged right in.
Question: Does this connect to 2021 dodger Ram or do I need to purchase a wiring adapter? Thanks
Answer: your truck should come with a built in break controller. mine did, it would be located above the buttons to turn off your rear view camera
Question: I have a 94 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins will it work with it
Answer: My package was damaged on arrival and no mounting bracket but the paperwork included states that there should have been.
