User questions & answers
Question: | Does this work with adaptive cruise control |
Answer: | The unit will fit, but you need to check to see what cable is correct for your Toyota. The cable will attach to the controller, and connect it to a trailer brake port usually found under the dash of your rig. The Tekonsha site has a tool that will help you determine what connector you need for your vehicle. Then you can order the connector cable on Amazon. |
Question: | I have a 4 way plug spliced into a 7 way plug that does my lights etc for what will be my brake pin csn i run a live 12 volt feed to plug |
Answer: | When your order it you put in what kind of vehicle you have |
Question: | Is it possible to use in a rental environment, where each user downloads the app for a rental, uses the receiver and then the next user does the same |
Answer: | John, it will work. I guess you are saying if you are installing this in. I just use it and it work great. I call Tekonsha tech support with question. Since my truck does not have the plug. I had to hard wire my own plug that came with the kit. One wire I did not have to use. Out of the five wires I only had to use 4 of them. The lady email me instruction for my 2008 Chevy 1500. She is very helpful. I tow a toy hauler with two motorcycle. Three setting plus to go to manual setting which I like. Plus there is a button on the right that I use like a trolly brake. (Use to drive a tractor). With that button, slowly pushing on it, I was using just the trailer to stop me or to straighten out the trailer if it sway. |
Question: | For the accelerometer to work properly, does the unit have to be installed in a certain orientation? Promaster 7 way connector is rotated 90 degrees |
Answer: | You need to get the wire harness for your make of vehicle. The adaptor harnesses are on the Amazon page for the Controller. They are less than $15.00. This is a good controller. |

CURT Electrical Trailer Brake Controllers
CURT offers several different trailer brake controller models to provide you with a solution that fits your unique towing setup and budget. We carry time-based and inertia-based or proportional brake controllers.
All CURT trailer brake controllers are designed for easy installation. Most use our quick plug harnesses, and each comes with its own set of features and benefits.
For a helpful guide in selecting a brake controller, see below.
Two types of brake controllers:
CURT electric brake controllers fall into one of two categories: inertia-based or time-based. These refer to the method of activation used by the brake controller. Both types are safe and effective for stopping a trailer. However, depending on your needs, one may be preferred over the other.
Inertia-based
Inertia-based or proportional trailer brake controllers use an electronic mechanism, called an accelerometer, to detect the momentum of the vehicle-trailer combination while braking. The controller accentuates the trailer brakes in proportion to the momentum, allowing for a smooth, highly efficient stop.
Time-based
Time-based activation is less complex than inertia-based. When stopping, a time-based brake controller accentuates the trailer brakes based on whatever gain setting is input by the driver. Although simple in operation, time-based trailer brake controllers are effective and provide a more budget-friendly option.
Heavy-duty towing
If you are towing a heavy trailer or cargo, an inertia-based brake controller will provide superior control to make smoother stops and to put less strain on your vehicle.
Light-duty towing
If you’re towing a simple boat trailer or popup camper, a time-based trailer brake controller may be sufficient. CURT time-based controllers are easily adjustable for varying loads.
Frequent towing
If you’re planning to tow often, an inertia-based brake controller is recommended. The sophisticated operation will help prolong the life of your vehicle and trailer.
Occasional towing
If you only plan to tow a few times a year, such as for family camping trips during the summer, a time-based brake controller is an effective and budget-conscious option.

Question: | Is this a plug and play unit for a 2006 f250, or do i need to purchase a wire/adapter kit |
Answer: | I put it in a 1999 GMC and purchased the adapter and pluged it in and ran a a hot wire to the battery which is recommended. My brother in law bought the adapter for his 04 F250 so yes you need to get the, adapter for your model and then it is plug and play except for the hot wire. |
Question: | do you need another plug? there are bare wires I don't know what to do with. I have a 2004 tundra |
Answer: | You should be able to purchase a towing harness from your local Toyota dealership. This will plug into the vehicle harness in your truck and will wire to your new brake controller. |
Question: | How to Adjust brake control to match trailer |
Answer: | On my controller, I have a + and - button and a red button. What I did was pull my trailer to about 25 mph then applied the red button, which works just the trailer brakes. The first time, it locked up the trailer brakes. Then I hit the - button and tried again. I did this until the brakes wouldn't lock up. Then I started using the truck brakes, and adjusting the trailer brakes, using the + &- buttons on the controller, until I could feel the trailer brakes applying with the same amount of force as the truck brakes. This took a little trial and error, but if you take your time it can be done. Hope this helps. |

Product description
It takes a lot of power to stop a moving trailer, especially when that trailer is hauling a heavy load. On RVs, flatbeds, livestock trailers and many other oversize haulers, manufacturers typically install trailer brakes to assist the tow vehicle in bringing such a massive amount of weight to a halt. But it takes more than a good set of brakes to make quick, efficient stops. It takes precision and the right amount of control. Discovery is a time-based brake controller, meaning it applies increasing brake pressure the longer your foot is on the brake pedal. This pressure is based on the gain setting and sensitivity adjustment set by the user. Discovery has a digital display for easy monitoring and the ability to manage up to four axles at a time. It mounts at any angle, anywhere in your vehicle and comes with an automatic power level adjustment feature to ensure you can stay better focused on your driving and spend less time worry about your trailer brakes. All CURT brake controls are designed to work with quick plugs so that they can readily plug into your vehicle's original equipment socket. They also include a mounting bracket and hardware for easy installation. A brake controller should be mounted somewhere on the dash of your vehicle, and we recommend putting it below the steering wheel, either on the right or left side of the steering column. - VERSATILE. You can use this electric trailer brake controller on virtually any trailer with 1 to 4 axles (2 to 8 brakes). Compatible with low-volt, PWM, ABS, cruise control and electric over hydraulic

There are issues installing these in Mercedes that could fry your onboard computer system if done incorrectly. I recommend a different avenue like the Curt Echo that links to your smart phone through Bluetooth. Question: | How is the breakaway switch integrated |
Answer: | Ours is, as shown in the pic, a blueish color. Maybe a blueish-green. There has never been any red on our display. |

The REESE Towpower Brakeman IV is a smart electric brake controller that mounts in any direction with no leveling required. Its small, compact design and pre-wired plug-and-play feature allow for quick and easy connection to 2-, 4-, 6- and 8- brake systems. This 100% solid-state electronic includes two separate easy push-button adjustment controls (output and sync) that allow for not only different trailer weights (output) but also the speed of activation (sync) depending on your driving style. For easy-reading, the bright and prominent digital display clearly indicates the output setting, sync setting, brake overload or short connection. Smoother braking starts with a sensing device that determines the voltage power being delivered to the towing vehicle’s brakes and assists in accurately adjusting the trailer brakes for city or highway driving. Safety is key, which is why this controller includes advanced internal circuit protection to help prevent damage and is meant for use on 12-volt negative ground systems only. This essential accessory is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this plug and play on a 1995 gmc sierra |
Answer: | Yes, they are a separate purchase, vehicle dependent, for my silverado it was $15 |
Question: | will this work on 2018 Silverado |
Answer: | The LED lights stay on all the time. |
Question: | Will it work on a 2018 dodge 3500 heavy duty |
Answer: | Height is about 1 inch. Width is 2.75 inches. Length is 4.0 inches. The wire pig tail sticks out the back. With the bracket, the height is 1.5 inches and 3.0 inches wide and the length is unchanged. |
Question: | does it come with a mounting bracket |
Answer: | It should. They are only two kinds. You do need an additional harness to connect the unit to your factory wiring. Amazon did the same thing with my Tacoma, even though it was the ONLY controller that fit. I love it and it's very compact. It should be a good fit for your Jeep. |

The TriFlex proportion-based brake controller features a compact size, a digital display and the ability to manage up to eight brakes at a time. The feature that sets the TriFlex apart from many others is its triple-axis motion-sensing accelerometer. This integrated circuit component allows the TriFlex to detect every motion of your vehicle and trailer with exact precision and to then apply the perfect amount of braking power for every situation. The TriFlex also automatically adjusts brake output when going up or down a hill and is compatible with anti-lock brakes and cruise control. It comes with a mounting bracket and hardware and can be mounted at various angles on your vehicle's dash. Best of all, like other CURT brake controllers, the TriFlex is protected by a limited lifetime warranty. This CURT trailer brake controller is designed to work with quick plugs so it can readily plug into your vehicle's original equipment socket. It also includes a mounting bracket and hardware for easy installation. A brake controller should be mounted somewhere on the dash of your vehicle, and we recommend putting it below the steering wheel, either on the right or left side of the steering column. This way the control will not block your view when driving, but it will remain accessible and visible when adjustment is needed.
- INTELLIGENT BRAKING. This trailer brake controller operates with an integrated circuit called a triple-axis accelerometer. This circuit detects motion on three planes and provides braking power accordingly, up or down a hill
- EASY ADJUSTMENT. The TriFlex brake controller is highly adjustable to accommodate different vehicles, trailers and loads. It provides 9 levels of sensitivity adjustment and features driver-selectable power output and manual activation
- COMPACT DESIGN. This electric brake controller has a sleek, subtle design to avoid dominating the dash of your vehicle. It measures only 3-1/4 inches x 4 inches x 7/8 inches. The TriFlex perfectly balances a compact design with powerful operation
- VERSATILE. You can use this electric trailer brake controller on virtually any trailer with 1 to 4 axles (2 to 8 brakes). It is also fully compatible with cruise control, anti-lock brakes, low-voltage systems and PWM systems
- SIMPLE SETUP. Installing and setting up the TriFlex trailer brake controller is fast and easy. It can be plugged into your vehicle in minutes using a vehicle-specific quick plug harness (sold separately). It also has automatic leveling and calibration
User questions & answers
Question: | What adapter cable is required for a 2002 Suburban 3.5l 4x |
Answer: | it's not so much an issue of fitting as much as making sure you get the right wiring harness for your truck which is normally sold separate from this unit. So just do a search for your trucks harness. You can even go to the manufacturers website and look up the right harness model number then search for it on Amazon. Great unit you'll love it. |
Question: | I have a 2013 silverado 1500 lt. has factory towing package. do i need an additional harness? how do i found out which one if so |
Answer: | Manufacture states power draw is so low (3.6 milliamps when not in use) that it would take 3-4 months to drain battery if allowed to sit without starting. Then would be the time they would recommend disconnecting unit from vehicle wiring. |
Question: | Does it have a digital read out to tell you what degree it's currently adjusted to |
Answer: | Most electric brakes will not "engage" when driving in reverse. The magnets will still grab, yes, but the camming action that forces the shoes to the drums is reversed and thus should not cause any issues. |
Question: | is this unit "proportional" or "timed |
Answer: | It comes with a pigtail that plugs into back of unit and stranded wires on the other end to hook up to the car. If you have a newer vehicle that is prewired for electric brakes, you can purchase a pigtail to plug into the prewired side plug. My vehicle came with that pigtail in the glove box when I bought it. |
