8 best truck hitch

A truck hitch, also known as a trailer hitch or towing hitch, is an essential component of a vehicle that allows it to tow trailers, campers, boats, or other heavy loads safely and securely. Here is what you need to know about truck hitches:

  1. Function: A truck hitch serves as a connection point between the towing vehicle and the trailer. It enables the transfer of weight and distributes the load, ensuring stability and control while towing.

  2. Types: There are several types of truck hitches, including:

    • Receiver Hitch: This is the most common type of hitch, which consists of a receiver opening that accepts a removable ball mount or hitch accessory.
    • Gooseneck Hitch: These hitches are mounted in the truck bed and are ideal for towing heavy loads like horse trailers and RVs.
    • Fifth-Wheel Hitch: Designed for towing large trailers or RVs, fifth-wheel hitches also mount in the truck bed and provide increased stability.
  3. Classifications: Hitches are categorized into classes based on their towing capacity. The most common classes are Class we through Class V, with Class we being the lightest and Class V the heaviest-duty hitch.

  4. Ball Mounts: Ball mounts are essential components of receiver hitches and come in various sizes and drop/rise configurations to match the height of the trailer coupler. They feature a ball platform where the hitch ball is attached.

  5. Towing Capacity: It's crucial to match the towing capacity of the hitch to the weight of the load you intend to tow. Exceeding the hitch's capacity can be dangerous and cause damage to both the trailer and the towing vehicle.

  6. Safety Features: Many modern hitches have safety features, including built-in locking mechanisms to secure the ball mount, safety chains to prevent detachment, and trailer brake controllers to assist in braking when towing heavy loads.

  7. Installation: Proper installation of a truck hitch is essential for safe towing. It often requires the services of a professional, especially for gooseneck and fifth-wheel hitches that need to be securely mounted in the truck bed.

  8. Wiring and Electrical: In addition to the hitch itself, you may need to install wiring and electrical connections to power the trailer's lights and brakes.

  9. Maintenance: Regular maintenance of your truck hitch is crucial for its longevity and safe operation. This includes inspecting for wear and tear, lubricating moving parts, and keeping it clean.

  10. Compatibility: Ensure that your truck hitch is compatible with your vehicle's make and model, as well as the type and size of the trailer you plan to tow.

Truck hitches are a vital accessory for any truck owner who needs to tow heavy loads. Choosing the right hitch and ensuring proper installation and maintenance are essential for safe and efficient towing operations. Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines and safety recommendations when using a truck hitch.

Your Hitch Was Made Right Here

You’ve got a lot riding on your hitch and the only thing keeping your truck and your trailer connected are those relatively small pieces of engineered steel. That’s why we treat the manufacture of your trailer hitch with the respect it deserves. For one, we insist on American-made steel, like the sheet steel we buy from U.S. Steel out of Gary, Indiana or the round bar that becomes the gooseneck ball made at a mill in Norfolk, Nebraska. Where the strength and flexibility of the steel can mean life or death, we trust the U.S. steel mills with their finely controlled processes and specifications we can trust. A hitch is only as good as the welds holding it together. We insist on making those welds under our roof.

Know Before Towing

We have rated your Tow & Stow hitch to tow 10,000 lbs (14,500 lbs if you have the 2 1/2" shank model; 21,000 lbs if you have the 3" shank model). This is called Gross Towing Weight Rating (GTWR*). The Vertical Towing Weight Rating (VTWR*) also called Tongue Weight Rating is 1,000 lbs (1,450 lbs if you have the 2 1/2" shank model; 2,100 lbs if you have the 3" shank model). Both your towing vehicle and your trailer ratings are very important. Instructions on how to find these ratings are on the next few pages of this book. All of our Tow & Stow hitches are tested for both strength and endurance according to SAE J-684, the latest standard for bumper pulled hitches.

User questions & answers

Question: How can I select the hitch in the photo with six position holes, instead of nine
Answer: Yes, each and every item in the road kit is counted, included any literature
Question: Will this fit 2019 ford
Answer: The case is 12.5" x 6.25" x 10". It does not take up that much room and has velcro on the back so it can stick to some backs of seats or sides of trunks. You will not think it took up too much room if you ever need to use it, it could save your life!
Question: Has anyone found a way to use this to haul a hay wagon with a drop through pin and then put the ball back on
Answer: Yes. That is what the "Air Compressor" with a tire valve (connector) is used for. It is clearly visible in the picture. For power it plugs into a cigarette lighter or similar power adapter - and some cars may not have that so you should check yours as needed.
Question: What is the rating on the 2 inch ball
Answer: Any jumper cables sold as a "catch-all" package like this aren't worth the time to use them... they wont xfer enough juice to jump a dead car... you're setting yourself up for fail on the most important emergency equipment you keep in your car. If you like/need the rest of the items in this package, ditch the cables and buy yourself a good pair of jumper cables, don't skimp on cables. If you're buying this primarily for the jumper cables, don't bother, just buy a good pair of cables for less than this package costs. You want a lower gauge (lower is better on jumper cables)... preferably something more like 4-guage... 8-guage is weak junk.

User questions & answers

Question: how much weight is this hitch rated for
Answer: This would not work you need something with a rubber tip
Question: Is this a 5” drop
Answer: They do have a flat part in the pointed end, but they should still be sharp enough for drawing on foam papers. It just won't be a very fine line. I used them on the black scratch out paper and they wrote fine.
Question: What material is the ball? Is it stainless steel
Answer: About 5in long. Very thin. I had third graders use them the points only last for one project.
Question: Can you flip the hitch to make it a rise
Answer: No. Diameter is too small to shape. You need something with a larger diameter since you have to make a triangle cross cut shape at the end. Try shaping a twig from a tree or bush instead.

Question: Is this item easy to install ? (nissan altima
Answer: All of our inventory have the new pins. Our inventory turns over very quickly. all of the recall boxes have been sent back from our inventory....
Question: Does this mount fit on a class II hitch receiver
Answer: This fits any hitch with a 2" receiver on it. This is not a hitch, despite it being called that, sometimes. It's a ball mount that goes IN to a hitch. As such, it is not rated with a Class. It does, however, have a weight rating of 10000 LB. GTW (Gross Trailer Weight) / 1000 LB. VTW (Vehicle Tongue Weight), which is what a Class IV hitch would be rated at, without weight distribution. So, if you have a Class IV hitch, yes, this would be compatible and retain that rating. :)

CURT Trailer Hitch Ball Mounts

CURT offers a wide range of trailer hitch ball mounts in different sizes and weight capacities to meet your needs. Our standard ball mounts are available with or without a pre-torqued trailer ball.

Standard ball mounts

CURT offers a range of trailer hitch ball mounts with multiple shank sizes, capacities and degrees of drop and rise.

Heavy-duty ball mounts

We carry trailer hitch ball mounts with an extra-durable carbide powder coat finish and as much GTW capacity as 21,000 pounds.

Multi-use ball mounts

Our multi-use hitch ball mounts feature various ball sizes welded to the same shank to accommodate different trailers.

Adjustable hitch ball mounts

Our adjustable trailer hitch ball mount line allows for level towing of your vehicle and trailer and is perfect for multiple vehicle owners.

Three factors to consider

There are three main things to consider when selecting a trailer hitch ball mount: how much weight you are going to be towing, what size receiver tube your trailer hitch has and how much drop or rise your ball mount will need (below).

Trailer weight vs capacity

First, be sure to select a ball mount with enough gross trailer weight capacity to fit your trailer. Trailer weight is one of the most important aspects of towing, and you should never exceed the weight capacity of any component of your vehicle, trailer or trailer hitch setup.

Hitch receiver size

Next, determine what size shank you will need. Receiver tubes come in a handful of standard sizes, including 1-1/4, 2, 2-1/2 and sometimes 3 inches, so finding a ball mount to match is relatively easy.

How to determine drop or rise

After you know how much weight you will be towing and the size of your receiver tube, you will need to determine the drop or rise necessary for your trailer.

Drop or rise is the amount of height difference between the trailer and your tow vehicle, whether that difference is positive (rise) or negative (drop).

The diagram offers a quick explanation for how to determine your needed drop or rise. Take the distance from the ground to the top of the inside of your receiver tube opening (A), and subtract it from the distance from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler (B).

Answer: It is square tube
Question: I didn’t see a hitch in the 7in drop that fold so I ordered this one. Is there not any of the 7in drop hitch with folding capabilities
Answer: I recommend getting the bolt lock hitch pin so that you dont have to carry and extra key.It uses your ignition key.
Question: What is the max weight it can hold
Answer: Currently there are no locking pins for the adjustment pins. We have a lock to lock the whole unit to the truck. If you are worried someone may steel them, you might want to carry an extra set of pins with you.
