13 best leather oil for boots

Leather oil is a specialized product used to maintain and condition leather, including boots, car interiors, and other leather goods. It helps to preserve the natural suppleness, texture, and appearance of the leather while also providing some level of protection against moisture and other elements. Here are some key points to consider about leather oil for boots and other leather applications:

  1. Conditioning and Moisturizing: Leather, especially in boots, can become dry and brittle over time due to exposure to environmental factors. Leather oil helps to replenish lost moisture, preventing cracks and preserving the leather's longevity.

  2. Restoration of Flexibility: With regular use, leather oil can restore the flexibility and softness of leather. This is particularly important for items like boots, which often undergo bending and flexing during use.

  3. Protection from Water and Stains: Some leather oils have water-repellent properties, which can help protect against water damage. They can also create a barrier against stains, making it easier to clean and maintain the leather.

  4. Enhancement of Natural Color and Shine: Leather oil can often deepen the color of the leather, providing a richer, more vibrant appearance. It can also give a subtle sheen, enhancing the overall aesthetic.

  5. Avoiding Discoloration: It's important to choose a high-quality leather oil that won't cause discoloration or leave a greasy residue. Always test a small, inconspicuous area before applying to the entire surface.

  6. Application Process: Applying leather oil typically involves cleaning the leather first to remove any dirt or grime. Then, a small amount of oil is applied evenly using a clean, soft cloth or a brush designed for this purpose. Excessive application should be avoided as it can lead to over-saturation.

  7. Types of Leather: Different types of leather (e.g., full-grain, top-grain, suede) may require specific types of leather oil or conditioning products. Always choose a product that is compatible with the type of leather you're treating.

  8. Frequency of Application: The frequency of application depends on factors like how often the leather item is used and the specific environmental conditions it's exposed to. In general, it's recommended to condition leather every 3-6 months for items that are regularly used.

  9. Storage and Temperature Considerations: Leather should be stored in a cool, dry place. Avoid extreme heat or cold, as they can damage the leather. Leather oil can help maintain its integrity in varying conditions.

  10. Compatibility with Other Products: If you're using other leather care products (like cleaners or protectants), ensure they are compatible with the leather oil you're using to avoid any adverse reactions.

Remember, each leather product might have specific care instructions, so it's always a good practice to check for any manufacturer recommendations or guidelines provided with the item. This information should help you effectively care for your leather items, whether they're boots, car interiors, or other leather goods.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this have any kind of odor
Answer: Not particularly; real mink oil has a strong odor, but this isn't real mink oil - it's mostly TALLOW instead.
Question: My car's leather seats are constantly exposed to dry and hot conditions. Would mink oil be appropriate to use on them
Answer: If they aren't suede, then mink oil would be fine to use on them. That precludes this product, though, since it isn't real mink oil - it's tallow.
Question: what is the Genus, species and country of origin of the mink
Answer: The species is bovine (as in Bessy the Hereford); this product is TALLOW with only a small portion of mink oil added to justify the word "mink" on the label.
Question: Is this squozen from fresh live minks
Answer: No. Live minks don't work well in treating your dead cow products. I recommend enjoying fried mink nuggets with your steak.

Question: Should I use a leather cleaner first
Answer: The first set I bought were wide and I had to trim them to size, the second set were fit correctly.
Question: How does this compare to tried and true mink oil
Answer: Yes they should fit your boots, as long as they are of square toe design
Question: How many boots will one jar actually work on? What does "5 ounces" mean in practical use
Answer: Years ago I tried the green model and found that the support was inadequate. The Superfeet Black has much more support and also fits into most shoes. However, for shoes that have very little cushoning, I would use Supperfeet Copper that has a layer of foam.

User questions & answers

Question: how's this stuff for fine dress shoes
Answer: Black or very dark brown dress shoes that you choose to wear in the rain. Otherwise find a good leather conditioner that is known to not darken leather. There are more than one on the market that are not supposed to. I have some very light leather and Bick 4 has not darkened them. Let's also has a product that is not supposed to darken too. Always test an in conspicuous area, especially if you own a fine dress shoe. Many years ago I learned the hard way
Question: Has anyone used this on leather auto seats? I used it on my boots and loved it, but I do not want to change the color of my MIata seats
Answer: Many happy customers have used both the Heavy Duty LP & the Leather Oil successfully on their auto leather. To read a review from a customer who restores the upholstery in classic cars, visit the product page for Heavy Duty LP at our own website, Obenaufs.
Question: Would I benefit from using this or the leather conditioner on a NEW motorcycle vest? I don't plan on riding in the rain
Answer: I believe leather conditioner keeps the leather soft and supple. The Obenauf's is a leather preservative and it's purpose is to protect the leather from various environmental elements that can damage the leather. It will work great for your leather vest because when you wear it when you ride, it is exposed to the air, the road grime, the pollution, the sun etc.
Question: wolverine
Answer: A wolverine was a teenager from Colorado who fought against Soviet paratroopers who invaded the United States during WW3 in the 1980’s. A member of the resistance fighters the Wolverines. Patrick Swayze was their leader.

The Only Natural Industrial Strength Leather Protection

Heavy Duty LP provides a natural barrier against destructive substances and reinforces leather fibers against scuffing. Due to the Beeswax/Propolis Suspension Formula, a little goes a long way. It waterproofs naturally, while still allowing the leather to breathe. With regular application, people are getting years of wear out of their leather boots!

Leather Care, Conditioning, and Reproofing

Not just for boots, Obenauf’s leather preservative (lp), is widely used to condition leather saddle bags, chaps, tack, holsters, sheathes, baseball gloves, as well as motorcycle and auto leather. More than a leather conditioner, use Heavy Duty LP as a wax waterproofing. Apply with a low heat blow dryer to reproof your cotton oilskin dusters and hats. The natural ingredients of LP can also be applied to protect unfinished, natural wood furniture.

Originally Developed for Firefighters 30 Years Ago

An Idaho Wildland Firefighter developed this unique Beeswax/Propolis Suspension Formula to protect leather against caustic fire retardant chemicals, ash, heat, water, and abrasion. Natural oils are gradually released into the fibers as a long-term lubrication. Heat or continued flexing causes oils to be released faster. Leather gets oiled when and where it needs it most; while on the job!

Recommended Application

At room temperature, apply by hand as body temperature helps melt LP into leather. Two applications last longer in wet conditions. For absorption, allow ten minutes or up to one hour between treatments. On smooth leather, buff off excess with a clean cloth. On nubuck, use a soft bristled brush. One ounce should provide one application to a pair of tall boots. Apply every 6 to 8 weeks or as needed.

User questions & answers

Question: has anyone used it on a saddle
Answer: Medium
Question: Would this soften a new thick leather (cowhide) saddleback bucket handbag
Answer: It really kind of depends on how long your legs are. If you typically have some issues with your pant legs, I’d probably go large. If not, I’d go medium. In my experience with these, they are kind of tight around the crotch area. Hope this helps!
Question: I just got this holster for my replica .45 and i understand the holster needs "oiled" so i can pull my "colt" lickety quick! so is this the producct

User questions & answers

Question: Has anyone used this on sheepskin leather garments? The manufacturer says to use only lanolin products on it
Answer: I wouldn't try it....if you elect to, use it in a discrete place.....I used it for leather and would purchase it again....good luck!!!
Question: I have a new Black leather jacket , but dried for keep long time , then this product is going to get the texture like a new
Answer: I had a leather jacket that was 11 years old and had gotten pretty dried out. I had to put a bottle and a half of this stuff on it, but now the jacket is like new and I wear it every chance I get. We live in Colorado, so things drying out is a way of life here, but this stuff really did the trick. I also had an old pair of work boots down at the ranch and they were pretty dried up, but I got this stuff to restore them to working order. They don't look that great due to wear and tear, but they are soft again.
Question: What's the difference between obenauf's leather oil vs their heavy duty lp (leather preserver)? i'm interested in a product for footwear
Answer: From the Obernauf's website:Use Heavy Duty LP for the strongest level of protection for work boots, horse & tack, belts, and baseball gloves, or any leather subjected to severe elements.Leather Oil is ideal for furniture, "breaking-in" new boots and for quick touch-ups between applications of Heavy Duty LP, dry weather and moderate conditions.
Question: Is Obenauft's oil safe for couches
Answer: Leather Oil can be used on leather furniture as long as you don't mind the darkening effect. It will hydrate and keep the leather supple. Some considerations: test in a hidden sport first to see if you like the results; & several light coats are better than one thick coat when applying to avoid saturation. One coat is usually all that is needed but if it still seems dry, try another coat after giving the first coat a few hours to soak in. Buff with a clean cloth after final application to remove excess oil. You can see actual photos of before and after Leather Oil applications to leather furniture at our Instagram account, obenaufs_lp.

Rub Some Life Into Your Investment!

The oils in leather dissipate every day, especially inside a hot automobile. Use Obenauf’s Oil on leather car seats to keep them from scuffing easily and cracking prematurely. One coat of our leather preserving oil is often all you need. Buffing with a clean cloth after application removes excess oils and leaves a pleasant shine. Leather Oil will also improve the look of sun-bleached leather in cars, trucks, SUV’s, motorcycles, boats, RV’s and more. Do not apply to vinyl or other auto interiors other than leather.

Leather Preservative For Hot, Dry, Dusty Climates

Leather Oil is the best treatment for moderately wet and dry conditions. Often called the “Dry Season Oil”, it absorbs fast, conditioning your leather against dehydration and cracking. It is so effective, that one coat is all that’s needed for the thinner leather on riding boots, furniture, and gloves. Use leather oil for preserving saddles and tack during the long summer months.

Let It Breathe

Leather is a skin with pores that need to breathe. Like our skin, leather requires cleaning and moisturizing. Natural oils are best to keep fibers flexible and water resistant while allowing pores to breathe. Obenauf’s uses natural plant oil & beeswax which will allow your leather to breathe. The key to preserving and protecting your leather is to keep it natural.

User questions & answers

Question: I have an expensive black leather jacket with makeup stains on the collar. Should I wipe it with a wet towel first or can I use this on it directly
Answer: This product was originally and traditionally used on saddles, harness's , bridals, and leather "strapping" of all manner... It is also used on leather baseball gloves, gun holsters, leather belts, & leather shoes & boots. My own father raised thoroughbred racing horses, and he is the one who first introduced me to this product. I am now 70 years old, and have never been without some of this since I was 16 years old.
Question: Will this change the look of a distressed leather jacket? I want to protect the leather from sun/wind damage, yet preserve the current look. Thanks
Answer: Yes it will soften the leather. It would be helpful to apply the oil to both the inside surface as well as the outside. Application of Neatsfoot oil will also darken the color of the ltather somewhat. This darkening will diminish over time.
Question: Is this safe to use on actual saddles and other leather equine products
Answer: First you must know that Neatsfoot Oil will darken your leather. I routinely oil my leather holsters and YES I do oil the inside of holster with a rough cloth as far as my fingers can reach. After oiling, I place pistol in holster and then using my hand, I press and push the leather to form around the pistol in the holster. Yes the oil may give you a smoother pull, but more importantly your pistol will have a tighter fit in the holster - smoother draw and much better retention for pistol.
Question: I put this on a chair and the dogs keep trying to lick it. Since there are no ingredients listed, is this safe for ingestion (non-toxic
Answer: No. It is meant for various leather applications that allow it to penetrate the leather. Vinyl typically is a water proof surface that would not absorb the oil and might damage the vinyl surface.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this the same "neet's foot oil my dad purchased for my baseball gloves and hiking boots in the 1960"s? is it still made by the same company
Answer: It will darken the leather at application, and the leather will remain darker than before the treatment, if this is the first conditioning treatment for this piece of leather.
Question: Will this darken the leather? I assume it will darken the leather as you apply it, but after it dries will it lighten up or stay dark
Answer: It says Prime Did not see 100 percent pure
Question: It’s says 100 percent pure and thennit says compound , which is it
Answer: Alcohol let’s leather stretch , the kind you drink. Vodka, gin, everclear. Old joke was drink one bottle and boots quit hurting now, add a bottle into the boot and they will hurt less later. Rub enough on to soak the leather, soak your sock, and leave the boots on, preferably by walking. Then add a product like this to put the oils back in the leather.
Question: Will this oil soften hard leather (Justin) cowboy boots? I have a high arch. Have even tried covering boot and hammering leather with rubber mallet
Answer: This stuff is more spray than oil. One bottle is not going to cover a whole jacket I think. Mink oil is going to darken whatever you put it on but it will make it last longer.

User questions & answers

Question: I have a pair of chaps would 32 ozs be enough for 1 coating
Answer: Effax leather balsam contains Lanolin, Avocado Oil & Beeswax, which are essential ingredients for the care and maintenance of saddles, bridles and leather riding products. Effax leather balsam has remarkable nutritive and protecting properties, which helps to keep the leather supple and gives it high tear resistance. This leather feed is particularly suited for smooth leather tack and saddlery but equally good for handbags or leather riding boots and any other smooth leather products. Simply apply with a sponge/cloth, rub and wipe off for a smooth, non sticky and supple finish.
Question: I've always applied with a natural sponge, gently rubbing in a circular motion. Is there an advantage to using a paint brush
Answer: you can use it on chrome tanned leather (the majority of leather these days) vegetable tanned (ie; harness leather) aniline leather which generally just refers to aniline dye. It is a softening treatment and will bring back old pretty worn out leather. I have been using it for more than 20 years with good results. A little goes a long way
Question: Does this oil waterproof as well as conditioning work boots
Answer: It really depends on how much you use, and the type of leather. Matte leather, with a thin coat/ thin use stayed matte for me, albeit a tad darker. "Shiny" leather like on pieces of a western saddle positively SHINES. If I used a lot on a matte leather, it would be super shiny too. Very little goes a looong way - but refrain from use on suede (unless its dire). Suede didn't like the stuff much.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it make leather shiny. Or does it have a matte finish
Answer: I would suggest trying to clean the make up stains with dawn dish soap and water first and then using the leather conditioner that way the make up stain doesnt spread.
Question: I’m mainly interested in softening and make flexible a new leather purse. Will this achieve
Answer: It will hydrate your jacket and add a light-weight shine. This could alter the distressed appearance because you may no longer notice dryness, roughness, light scratches or cracks, though these may be desirable effects. We suggest you try it out on a hidden spot and wait for it to dry completely before assessing the impact. If the conditioner doesn't work for you, take advantage of Leather Rescue's no-risk 90-day satisfaction guarantee.
Question: Is this product suitable for distressed leather
Answer: It is or seems to be an oil base product and not a cream. Works into the leather good they wipe of the extra.
Question: Does this darken the leather
Answer: Yes. The conditioner is non-toxic.

Question: what's the difference between this paste and the 'golden' mink oil by Fiebing
Answer: So one answer was, "This particular mink oil is natural." Saying that it's natural could mean that this is 5% mink oil, and 95% other animal fats or vegetable oil etc. Does anyone know what the ingredients are? I'd really like to know what the breakdown is.
