11 best gasket sealer

Gasket sealer, also known as gasket maker or gasket sealant, is a type of adhesive or compound used to create a flexible, leak-proof seal between two mating surfaces in an engine or other mechanical applications. It is commonly used in automotive and machinery maintenance. Here are some key aspects about gasket sealer:

  1. Function:

    • Gasket sealer is applied to the surface of a gasket or directly onto the mating surfaces of engine components. It fills any irregularities or imperfections, ensuring a tight seal that prevents leakage of fluids (such as oil or coolant) and gases (like exhaust fumes).
  2. Types:

    • Silicone-Based: These sealants are highly flexible, resistant to high temperatures, and have good adhesive properties. They are widely used in automotive applications.
    • Anaerobic: These cure in the absence of air and are used for sealing applications in close-fitting, machined parts.
    • RTV (Room-Temperature Vulcanizing): These cure at room temperature and are often used for forming flexible gaskets.
    • Non-Hardening: Some gasket sealers remain pliable even after curing, providing a flexible and durable seal.
    • Formed-In-Place (FIP): These are typically silicone-based sealers that are applied directly to the mating surfaces, forming a gasket when assembled.
  3. Applications:

    • Gasket sealer is used in various automotive applications, including sealing oil pans, valve covers, water pumps, thermostat housings, and other engine components. It is also used in machinery, appliances, and plumbing.
  4. Surface Preparation:

    • Before applying gasket sealer, surfaces should be clean, dry, and free from oil, grease, dirt, and old gasket material. Some sealers may require the use of a primer for better adhesion.
  5. Curing Time:

    • Depending on the type of gasket sealer, it may require varying amounts of time to cure. Some sealants can form a seal within minutes, while others may take several hours or even longer.
  6. Temperature Resistance:

    • Gasket sealers are designed to withstand a wide range of temperatures. Silicone-based sealants, for example, are known for their high-temperature resistance.
  7. Flexibility and Durability:

    • The flexibility of a gasket sealer is important, as it must accommodate any movement or vibration in the components it seals.Additionally, it should be durable enough to maintain a tight seal over time.
  8. Compatibility:

    • It's crucial to select a gasket sealer that is compatible with the materials it will be in contact with, such as aluminum, steel, or various types of gasket materials.

Using the right type of gasket sealer for a specific application and following proper application procedures is essential to ensure a reliable and long-lasting seal. Always refer to the manufacturer's instructions for the best results.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it suitable to use this for a gasket around a part that is screwed into place. For example an oil drain bolt or drain valve
Answer: Yes. Do not plan to use it as permanent. It will last for the duration the life of the oil or until you can get a regular bolt gasket.
Question: Will this work as a thread sealer for a rear end differential drain and filler plug
Answer: might work but permatex makes a better product for thread sealing #59214
Question: Would you use this without a gasket, as the only gasket for rear differential cover
Answer: It should be OK to use as the only gasket for the rear differential cover as it is recommended to be used in such fashion. I would not use it in conjunction with another gasket since it will increase the likelihood of leakage.
Question: I need to repair gasket on my 05 side by side carburetor,s fuel bowl.WILL this work
Answer: No. You need a gas-specific product. Like:http://www.amazon.com/Permatex-29132-MotoSeal-Ultimate-Gasket/dp/B000HBGHKE/ref=pd_bxgy_263_text_y

Question: would gasoline eat it? Wondered if it could fix a gas line
Answer: Yes - gas would eat it, the only thing that will fix a gas line is a new one....
Question: can it be used on shingles
Answer: I used it to seal up an exhaust pipe joint on my car, which is very different from roofing, but my point is this is very sticky, durable stuff. I don't think it would stick very well to the small rocks on the up-side of a shingle (it would end up pulling them off if allowed to dry and then movement occurs), but for stopping leaks down below the shingles, I would think it might be a good choice. Might be a bit expensive compared to other sealants you could possibly use, though.

ATP AT-205 Re-Seal Stops Leaks, 8 Ounce Bottle

ATP Automotive

Based on 9 reviews Check latest price

Product description

AT-205 Re-Seal is a fast, effective and safe stop-leak for all rubber seals and gaskets. The exclusive formulation restores worn or dried out seals and is not harmful to internal bearings and components.

  • Professional strength fast acting resealer, stops leaks fast
  • Rejuivinates all rubber seals & gaskets in engines, transmissions, power steering, differentials and hydraulic systems
  • Compatible with conventional and synthetic oils, ATF, gear oil, power steering fluids and hydraulic oil
  • Does not contain petroleum distillates, will not over-swell or breakdown seals
  • 8oz bottle will treat a 6 quart capacity, adjust accordingly

User questions & answers

Question: can this oil be used in synthetic engine oil
Answer: Yes you can. It says so on their homepage (Note, that link from "C.B." is a false link and will redirect you to a false site.)From their real website: "Compatible with conventional and synthetic oils, ATF, gear oil, power steering fluids and hydraulic oil"I'm not posting a link, just google it, it's safer than relying on the spam/malware redirects in here.
Question: So basically I just put this where I would put the oil and it should stop the leak? Thanks
Answer: It should if the seal or other ring is not too far gone. But never put it in the gas tank, brake system, or cooling system....
Question: Will this work in Chevy 4L60E transmissions
Answer: I was reluctant to put it in my 4L60E, but I did when the leak got pretty bad and I didn't have time to fix it. I only put in 1 bottle when the instructions called for 2, but oh my goodness what a result. Stopped the leak completely in under a half hour. I was blown away... blown away. Thought it was snake oil, turns out this stuff is legit. Then as if that weren't enough... the darn transmission started shifting more crisply... tooootally unexpected side benefit. It has lasted almost exactly a year and now the leak is slowly starting to come back. I have no reservations about treating it again. Since it can't over-swell the seals, this time I'll be adding the recommended 2 bottles. This product is a rare diamond in the rough of snake oil products. So to answer your question, yes, apparently it does work in 4L60E transmissions.
Question: Do I just dump the whole bottle in
Answer: 8oz bottle will treat a 6 quart capacity, adjust accordingly

Product features

AT-205 added to leaking system

AT-205 Re-Seal is added to any leaking engine, transmission, power steering system, differential or hydraulic system (except for brakes) to condition rubber seals/gaskets and stop leaks. Simply pour it in as you would be filling it with oil or fluid.

The formulation blends with the oil

The additive blends with oil in the system and is circulated throughout during operation, treating and conditioning rubber seals and gaskets.

Conditions and rejuvenates seals

AT-205 is a plasticizer, a type of chemical used in rubber manufacturing to set hardness and flexibility. As a seal or gasket gets older it can dry out, harden and wear - treating it with AT-205 will rejuvenate it, restoring it's flexibility and sealing properties.

Most leaks resealed within 5 hours

As long as the seal or gasket is not severely damaged or torn, the leak is resealed after a total of 5 hours of driving - saving time and money from costly repairs.

Gasgacinch 440-B Gasket Sealer and Belt Dressing, 8 oz

Gasgacinch

Based on 404 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Gasgacinch Gasket Sealer and Belt Dressing provides unmatched gasket sealing properties, preventing leaks, reducing expensive repairs, and creates a superior grip as a belt dressing. Gasgacinch Gasket Sealer remains flexible and makes it easier to assemble and disassemble the engine or transmission. Often any residue of Gasgacinch may be removed simply by rubbing it away. Many other sealers require solvents or destructive scraping to clean off a head or flange. Gasgacinch adheres to carbon steel, alloy steel, aluminum, titanium, lead, magnesium, synthetic and natural rubber, copper and cork. Gasgacinch Gasket Sealer may be used in hot, cold, wet, dry, acid, basic, and abrasive environments. Gasgacinch, when cured, is flexible, has high-peel strength, high-shear strength, fatigue resistant, vibration dampening, high heat resistance, gasoline resistant, and oil resistant. Gasgacinch performs exceptional compared to other sealants that are pasty and thick. Competitor's thick material makes it difficult to seep into the small imperfections of the metal surfaces, creating air pockets where leaks will develop. In contrast, Gasgacinch is very fluid, which allows it to flow into the small imperfections of metal surfaces. GASGACINCH includes heat-resistant formulated compounds and contains NO HEAT RETAINING metal powders. Because of its superior composition, GASGACINCH has the versatility for a broad range of applications not found in other sealants. GASGACINCH's proven performance is preferred in nearly all mechanical industries including: auto repair, diesel and truck repair, high-performance engine builders, motorcycle repair and many more.

User questions & answers

Question: I have a carburetor that won’t seal anymore. Can I use this to coat my gasket or saturate it in this? Will it fix the seal
Answer: no problems there are a variety of chemicals that will remove this sealer quickly and quite easily brake parts cleaner naphta acetone to name a few mechanics will tell you which I am that you usually only have to use the sealer on one side of the gasket which will hold it to the part so for instance EX>. a thermostat housing will have the gasket sealer on the housing side so that when you unbolt it the housing comes off with the gasket attached to it and the intake manifold is still clean, but there are some instances where both sides would need sealer like you made the mistake of putting radiator stop leak in and now every part of your cooling system is clogged and the water can't circulate making the pressure build up & up till something lets go usually this will be the gaskets>>EX. thermostat, intake manifold, water pump so that's a little tip for you and here's another one if you did put some sealer into the radiator it must be cleaned out and the use of (a)cascade dishwasher powder will help (b)white vinegar and salt will take out the sealer plus any calcium deposits and rust from the complete engine cooling passages====== if this has happened use the vinegar mix first then the cascade then fresh with the baking soda to neutralize the acid content then fresh water again to clean it out altogether followed by fresh antifreeze and distilled water never add house water to your radiator or battery the calcium builds up in radiators very quickly and the impurity's kill the battery acid plates with the same build up that's just a few tips for you as a bonus O.K.
Question: Anyone ever use this to glue Rubber Knee Pads to a Motorcycle Gas Tank? Results
Answer: No. It is best used to hold paper gaskets in place prior to assembly on metal parts. It "dries" like rubber cement (the solvents evaporate quickly). If you use ANYTHING on hoses (I generally do not) I would use Permatex 80019 Aviation Form-A-Gasket No. 3 Sealant available from Amazon as well https://www.amazon.com/Permatex-80019-Aviation-Gasket-Sealant/dp/B000HBM3QQ. It will remain soft and pliable and WILL seal hoses if they are a bit stiff and prone to leakage at the ends. It is
Question: Can I apply this around the edge and bolts of the oil pan? Will it fix the leak
Answer: Not really. I was also missing bolt hardware to attach feet and fuel gauge does not work.
Question: How do you use this product as a belt dressing? Do you apply it with the belt moving or stationary on the engine
Answer: Please be noted the suction tube is 2pcs extensible pipe, it could be adjusted from 26”to 36”.

User questions & answers

Question: I don't get the "remove thermostat" part. If i remove my thermostat where am i going to plug the hose into? Does it mean to replace it with a new one
Answer: Most thermostats can be removed without causing a leak. I am guessing that yours might be like my truck where the gasket is incorporated into the thermostat. If so, you can probably adjust the time to allow the thermostat to open and replace it afterward. I cut the guts out of mine but it was probably overkill.
Question: If i just replaced my thermostat do i need to remove it, it's such a pia
Answer: Yes. For a "perfect" flush, the thermostat needs removed. Pain as it is, it's a good time to replace it.
Question: How do I return the product if I have already used it
Answer: You can't.
Question: Im getting combustion in my radiator, not coolant in oil, will it work
Answer: had same problem and it didn't work

  • Includes 32oz Head Gasket sealer and 32 oz Flush

User questions & answers

Question: New radiator do i still flush
Answer: yEP, you want to flush the engine too that's why you remove the thermostat as part of the process.
Question: Can thermostat be replaced afterwards once the Blue Devel repairs have been made
Answer: Yes. The reason you remove the thermostat is to allow full flow of the coolant and blue devil liquid. After the repair is made you want to reinstall or replace the thermostat so the engine warms up and operates correctly. Also make sure that you have the heater controls in the full warm setting so that the coolant going through the heater core is not restricted while the blue devil fluid is being circulated.
Question: After sealing the leak, does blue devil need to be drained and fresh antifreeze used
Answer: Just follow the instructions on the label. I drained the radiator after treatment showed no leaks after 100 or so miles. My car still does not leak and it runs almost like new even though it has 147k on the odometer.
Question: What is the warranty or guarantee if the product doesnt work
Answer: Blue devil will not warrantee their product if bought from amazon or eBay. It Says this directly on their site. If bought from an authorized retailer and it happens to not work within 60 days of purchasing then you can get your money back.

User questions & answers

Question: will this work on sealing rear ends filled with synthetic gear oil with ls added
Answer: I would try and replace the pan gasket first
Question: Is this good for vaulve cover Gaskets
Answer: Having used this to seal gaskets (and for this use it is fantastic, no leaks but easy to remove later), I do not recommend using it as belt dressing; it gums up like rubber cement.
Question: Can ultimate grey be used to hang a rear view mirror to the windshield. Mine falls off every few months
Answer: 80psi is pretty light pressure when it comes to engines and oil doesn’t get very hot unless there are extreme problems... almost any gasket sealer should work well. Most of these sealers are made strong enough to hold and seal the head gaskets which is many folds more pressure than any of the internal fluids.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you remove it if needed
Answer: Believe the instructions are on the back side of the package. You can use acetone or paint thinner to remove. Its great stuff. Works well.
Question: Can I use it to glue shower mirror to tile in my shower
Answer: You can but it will probably leach through the mirror coating and appear as mold. Buy mirror mastic.
Question: Would this be a good product for sealing a crack in a dishwasher liner
Answer: Yes- I did this, along with filling in a gap on the dishwasher door gasket (which was ultimately replaced). Worked great! Be sure to clean the surface and rough it up a little (a bit of sandpaper, then clean the sandpaper dust off before application of the RTV). Used it a few years ago- is still sealed; all is well.
Question: My portable convection oven (heats to 500 degrees) glass door fell out of the metal bracket. Would this work to glue it back in
Answer: Be careful of sealant giving off toxic fumes the first few times you use it. Try heating up the oven 2-3 times before actually placing food inside that could absorb the toxic off-gasses.

User questions & answers

Question: where do you pour this stuff in if you have a radiator without cap
Answer: Correct answer according to directions on bottle is through the top radiator hose. DO NOT pour into the expansion reservoir.
Question: I have coolant leaking out of the engine from the heads. Will this work for external leaks
Answer: I used it on my Prius ,with 260000miles on it. Now 291000 without any problems
Question: How much do I put in my Chevy cobalt
Answer: Depends on how badly your head gasket is leaking. If it's a small leak my answer would be do not use this product EVER. If your car is absolutely trashed and this it a last ditch effort to keep it running (and if you don't mind that the product may clog your thermostat, radiator and heater core) then use the whole bottle as the directions instruct.I would HIGHLY suggest you read all one star reviews on this product before buying. One of the lowest rated products on Amazon for a reason. Ruined my engine and I had to take them to small claims court to get my damages covered.
Question: about 30 minutes into the running process the heater started blowing cold. is this normal
Answer: No it's not normal --- on my jaguar XJ8 -it did more than heater coils and totally plugger up the entire radiator -- water not flowing --- blowing a few hoses -- did something to the thermostat and with all that ( there more detailed from the Jaguar dealership cost to repair $42,000.00 ) Blue Devil's answer -----------------!-----------!-------! ---- $1500.00 and good buy ------ check the web sites you will be amazed at what you find out about these complaints --- and they don't pay for damage repair caused by their product---if I had checked first I never would have used a product from this company

User questions & answers

Question: would this work for marine freshwater outboard motor such as water pump gasket sealer
Answer: Unless ur rear view mirror weighs as much as a feather, I would say absolutely NO!! It’s a sealent, gasket type sealent, smear some on the surface where u need it, wait for at least 20-25 minutes, then place both pieces together, an done🤓👍⚡️Docf
Question: What is the difference between No. 2 and No
Answer: You bet. Just follow the instructions on the tube precisely.
Question: My red plastic Moeller marine portable 6 gallon fuel tank has some small gas leaks around the screw on caps - think it would be safe to use
Answer: chances are there is a bigger problem than just needing "gasket seal" without looking at you car i would not be able to repair it just by a simple comment, if both areas are flat {the manifold and the carburetor} you actually would not even need a sealant. i have been a diesel mechanic for 40 years , this is one of the best products i have used { for 40 years} i am glad i can still find it. i put a coat on the gasket and a coat on the part let semi dry {tacky} then put the gasket on the part and assemble.
Question: Is this compatible with plastic fittings? I have a diesel storage tank with 3/4" threads that leak a little and I am looking for a sealant
Answer: Not that I know of and I don't think it would be the best product for something like that. I'd recommend Barge Cement or Aquaseal.
