12 best self threading serger

A self-threading serger is a specialized sewing machine used in the world of sewing and textiles. It is known for its ability to make the threading process much more convenient and efficient compared to traditional sergers. Here's what you need to know about self-threading sergers:

  1. Definition and Purpose: A serger, also known as an overlocker in some regions, is a sewing machine designed to finish fabric edges and seams professionally. It trims excess fabric while simultaneously encasing the raw edges with thread, creating a neat and finished look. A self-threading serger automates the often intricate and time-consuming process of threading the machine.

  2. Threading Mechanism: The standout feature of a self-threading serger is its simplified threading system. It typically includes color-coded threading paths, automatic thread tension settings, and a threading lever or mechanism that makes it easier to pass the thread through the serger's multiple loopers and needles.

  3. Loopers and Needles: Sergers have loopers and needles that work in tandem to create secure and professional-looking seams. Loopers are responsible for forming the loops of thread that encase the fabric edges, while needles stitch the fabric layers together.

  4. Stitch Types: Self-threading sergers can create various types of stitches, including the common overlock stitch, rolled hem, and flatlock stitch. The choice of stitch depends on the desired finish and fabric type.

  5. Differential Feed: Many self-threading sergers come equipped with a differential feed mechanism. This feature allows you to adjust the feed dogs' speed, preventing fabric distortion, puckering, or stretching, especially when working with knits and stretchy fabrics.

  6. Cutting Blade: Sergers have a built-in cutting blade that trims the fabric's edge as it sews. The blade's position and width are often adjustable to accommodate different seam allowances and fabric thicknesses.

  7. Thread Options: Self-threading sergers can handle multiple threads, typically from 2 to 5 threads, depending on the machine's design. The choice of thread configuration depends on the stitch you want to create and the fabric you're working with.

  8. Ease of Use: The self-threading feature makes these sergers more user-friendly and less intimidating for beginners. Threading is often the most challenging aspect of using a serger, and self-threading simplifies this process.

  9. Price Range: Self-threading sergers can vary in price depending on their brand, features, and capabilities. Higher-end models may offer more stitch options, advanced threading systems, and additional accessories.

  10. Maintenance: Like all sewing machines, sergers require regular maintenance to keep them in good working condition. This includes cleaning, oiling, and occasionally replacing needles and cutting blades.

In summary, a self-threading serger is a valuable tool for sewing enthusiasts and professionals who want to achieve clean and professional-looking seams with minimal effort. It simplifies the often challenging threading process and offers a range of stitch options for various sewing projects, making it a versatile addition to any sewing room.

User questions & answers

Question: I have a sewing table with a 11" front-to-back opening. Will this serger fit, with or without the scrap catcher
Answer: Both the 1034D and ST4031HD Sergers are excellent models to start with. The 1034D helps you achieve better stitch quality, for a more even, professional finish, even on very thin or stretchy fabrics. The reliable Brother 1634D serger is perfect for finishing, creating rolled hems, inserting zippers, stitching neat blind hems, and creating ruffles on both knits and woven fabrics.
Question: How fast does this sew
Answer: Yes, the ST4031HD can serge vinyl and denim.
Question: The additional feet are not included on other sites, I want to make sure that they are really included with this offer
Answer: The ST4031HD will perform a rolled hem.
Question: What feet come with this out of the box. I am a little confused because one company says none and another says it comes with multiple feet
Answer: The st4031hd is a serger for all types of fabric but includes heavy duty (hence, “hd”) fabric like denim. A typical serger is used to put 2 pieces of material together and cuts the excess fabric off for a clean professional look. The 2340cv is a cover stitch is a serger that provides a decorative topstitch in 2,3, or 4 colors like what you would find on ladies leggings (stretchy knits), or work out attire. Hope this helps😊.

User questions & answers

Question: Has anyone's clutch button gotten stuck in the up position? That's the button that switches your serger between coverstitch and overlock mode
Answer: Yes the same clutch problems happened so I bought another serger and keep this in cover stitch mode. [set by a technitian] Will sell as I never use it.
Question: Does this machine do heavy material
Answer: The Singer 14T968DC serger is a home serger. It can sew several layers of denim weight fabric, but may not be suitable for 4-5 layers of upholstery type fabric. This machine does not have presser foot pressure adjustment so too thick of fabric will raise the presser foot high enough to release the tensions.
Question: I have been using a brother 1034d. is this singer any harder to use than the brother
Answer: We only have information on Singer brand sewing machines; therefore we are unable to compare with a different brand. The Singer model 14T968DC comes with a CD Workbook, which shows you exactly how to use each stitch. There is also loads of additional support via instructional videos and a Customer Care line where our call center representatives will be happy to answer questions and help you to have a great sewing experience with the Singer model 14T968DC serger. The toll free Customer Service line number is 1-800-474-6437. We have expanded our hours to 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM CST, Monday to Friday. We now also have Saturday hours and are available from 8:00 AM till 2:00 PM CST.
Question: Can this machine do a good cover stitch
Answer: I know this is an old question but I hope it will help someone. I just tried this serger last night for the first time. The first stitch I did was the tripple coverstitch. It took me half an hour to thread it, but now that I have done it, I am sure it will take me less than 5 minutes next time. I am new to household sergers (used an industrial overlock over 20 years ago). Once I got it all set up, I was very pleased with the quality of the coverstitch. So far I don't regret buying this machine vs. high end brands.

Question: is this only a single needle or can it do double needle stitching
Answer: The base handle is unscrewed, as you unscrew it, separate the two “jaws” to the size of the item you are attaching it to. Place the jaws on the item and rescrew down the handle. Kinda works like a vice clamp.
Question: How to repair Janome 1200d serger
Answer: Unscrew the nut from the ball joint. Take the nut and thread it on the GOOSE NECK end and insert the ball in the bracket joint. Tighten the nut and the connection is secure. A simple diagram would be very helpful.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this actually self threading or do I still need to thread the lower loops
Answer: idk about the plexiglass, but it holds a small container of vitamins with ease as well as a small mirror
Question: What is in bknus package
Answer: The arm that is flexible is 2 ft long.
Question: what is a cover stich
Answer: The pads on the clamp will clamp evenly on a 1 inch thickness as the pads are parallel at 1 inch. The clamp will open to over 2 inches but anything at about 1-1/2 inches and up the pads do not make parallel contact and you risk the clamp slipping off when weight is applied because only a slight surface at the back of the clamp makes contact. Also, as you open the clamp beyond 1 inch, the spring, which is very strong, takes a lot of force to open. Hope this helps.
Question: How fast does it sew and does this machine run quietly
Answer: Yes, IPhone 6 Plus will fit on the clamp holder.

User questions & answers

Question: use as a sewing machine
Answer: I know this is an old question and some of my answers are repeats, but if you are still using this machine and haven't come up with an answer maybe one of the following solutions from my own experience will help you. I love this machine and therefore completed an extensive search for answers to my questions which included: Brother Support (not that helpful), studying the manual carefully & repeatedly, asking sew 'n' vac store employees and lots of Google searches. Here, in no particular order, are advice/solutions that solved my gathering/bunching issue and many other issues. 1. PROPER UPPER THREADING: Regarding threading, let me advise that the thread will jump out of the correct lineup at times so if your stitch changes in a bad way, check that first. Also, I had to use a clip over a piece of foam on the last guide before the needle guide because it popped out constantly, regardless of checking, rechecking and having others check my threading. 2. PROPER BOBBIN THREADING: I am forgetful so actually check the manual each time I thread a bobbin. Improper bobbin threading will really mess you up. 3. CORRECT NEEDLE SIZE & TYPE for specific fabric--VERY IMPORTANT!! Some of this is trial and error. Not all needle/thread guidelines I found applied to my situation. I tried Schmetz--130/705, HaX1 of 15x1--the Brother manual states this as an alternative, but Organ HLX5 (not sold locally) is best. DO NOT use the Schmetz "UNIVERSAL" needles if you are working with a fabric that specifically requires sharp or ball point. The Universal has a slight ball point--not sharp not full ball point. Learned that the hard way. 4. CORRECT THREAD FOR SIZE OF NEEDLE, TYPE OF FABRIC AND EXPECTED END RESULT. (superiorthreads.com is an awesome resource for this and many other sewing, quilting, embroidery questions. They have tons of educational articles and you can email them and receive friendly, personalized assistance for your particular situation. This is not a conflict of interest because Superior does not sell sewing machines and the articles and email support are available even if you don't purchase Amazon does sell a very few Superior products but not many.) Before Superior, I had no idea how many variables were involved in sewing and learned more about thread than I ever wanted to know, but need to know. 5. TENSION--BOTH UPPER TENSION AND BOBBIN TENSION. This is the first machine I have owned that both could be adjusted. Check manual for what correct tension should look like and how to adjust (admittedly the manual is not extremely clear). Bobbin tension is tightened or loosened by a screw at the bottom of bobbin case, and upper thread tension is adjusted by the small knob on the left side midway down. This knob has numbers, but they are essentially useless (even Brother agrees). They are there just to show the concept of righty tighty, lefty loosey--again, trial and error. 6. The LARGE DIAL TO THE RIGHT adjusts the stitch length, NOT the Tension. 7. Always keep the top thread guide pulled to maximum height, and make sure thread is coming out from the correct direction. Thread stands can also help although I have not tried one. Amazon sells these, several kinds. 8. If you use cone spools or slippery thread, you can purchase netting that will keep it from sliding and bunching at the bottom. 9. I have not yet figured out the best setting for the FEED DOG in various situations, but I do adjust it often if feeding seems difficult so far staying mostly within the light green area. Bottom line, your problem could be caused by any, all or some of the above factors. Good luck if anyone finds this answer useful. I can add photos, I think, if needed. Pretty sure this is the longest question answer I have ever written so I am not going to re-read, sorry for any typos or excess rambling.
Question: I have never serged before, I need a very simple to thread machine. any suggestions for me
Answer: Throat space is the area to the right of the needle when seated at the machine. It is the open area between the needle and the vertical side of the machine that determines how much fabric might fit comfortably within that space when sewing on your project.
Question: My 8 thread Baby Lock recently broke and i am desperate to get a replacement. Will I be satisfied with the Brother 1034D? I have a Brother Inovis an
Answer: Yes, there are many feet, including a walking foot. If you want a 1/4 foot with an "edge" on it, you would have to purchase one from the sewing outlet.com ($15.99). I like to sew with the edged 1/4 inch foot. Otherwise, there are many presser feet, including the free motion foot. You can drop the feed dogs to free motion. This is a great quilting machine and has excellent "pin feed," which moves the fabric through like butter. First time threading took longer for me, but after that it was free sailing. If you want to make quilts faster like I do, this is a great machine. I used to quilt with my Bernina, but I like the Brother better. It is more affordable and well made. You should also know that if you use thicker threads (I always use 100% cotton from ConnectingThreads.com), that you will need an 80/12 needle instead of the smaller ones due to the way the machine's tension is set up. Hope this helps,Vivian from Wisconsin
Question: I am looking at a tee shirt hem. It has 2 top stiched straight lines and the underside has the loops. Will this machine do this
Answer: It measures 8 3/4 inches from needle to right side of machine. It is 6 1/2 inches high from base to top of opening.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this machine loud? I currently own the Brother 1034 and it’s so noisy
Answer: No
Question: did anyone receive their machine with a piece of pink fabric attached to the needle? and thread still on the machine? I purchased new
Answer: Just a little to show you threading
Question: Can this machine serge through denim like a champ
Answer: Dear Fayez, 220 volts is the electrical system used in Europe and many other countries. 110 volts is the electrical system in the United States and a few other countries. If you are a resident of the United States and plan to use your Juki machine ONLY in the United States, then purchase the 110 volt unit; BUT if you reside outside the United States (Europe or another country) you will want to purchase the 220 volt system. If by chance Juki makes this particular machine BOTH in 110 and 220 voltage, AND if you will be using it in various counties around the world, then purchase the machine IF IT COMES in dual voltage. Otherwise, pick the voltage that YOUR country uses for its electrical grid.
Question: Where would i get accessories
Answer: Yes it will do a 3 thread and a 2 thread rolled hem.

Brother ST4031HD Serger, Strong & Tough Serger, 1,300 Stitches Per Minute, Durable Metal Frame Overlock Machine, Large Extension Table, 3 Included Accessory Feet

Brother

Based on 378 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Serge with confidence on multiple layers of denim, layered knits, and heavy-duty fabrics with this heavy-duty Brother Serger. The ST4031HD is a durable, heavy-duty serger that is made from high-quality metal inside and out. This is a 3 or 4 thread serger that allows users the flexibility to handle thick materials with ease, yet has the precision to work with lightweight fabrics. The Brother ST4031HD includes a high-durability blade made from carbon steel that can cut a smooth, clean edge though multiple fabrics without hassle.

The strong interior metal frame helps ensure your serger remains stable on your work surface, even at very high speeds. The wide, detachable table built into the ST4031HD keeps heavy fabrics on a level surface with the needle, helping to prevent excess pulling on the needle and thread for better finishing. The Brother Serger allows you to get more serging done quicker by sewing up to 1,300 stitches per minute. To adjust the speed, simply apply less pressure on the foot controller to suit your individual comfort level.

This serger works with either 3 or 4 threads for added flexibility. User questions & answers

Question: Im a beginner at sergering, which one: 1034d or st4031hd and why
Answer: A regular sewing machine would be so much better and easier! I also own a Brother SE 400 and LOVE It! I would choose it over the Brother 1034D Serger.
Question: Can you serge denim and vinyl
Answer: This serger is much easier to thread than others I have owned and used but it's not as simple as threading a regular sewing machine. You must thread in the correct order to be successful. Watch some of the YouTube videos that demonstrate threading this machine. Then what I did was place a sticker underneath each tension dial and with a Sharpie marker, I wrote 1, 2, 3 and 4 on the appropriate sticker. That way I can tell at a glance what order I need to thread in.
Question: Can this machine do rolled hems like on tulle and silky fabrics
Answer: Ouch. Hopefully, they have good customer support to help you. The 1034D will do what a 4-thread serger does and you won't be disappointed. But that's about it.
Question: What is the deferent between st4031hd and 2340cv
Answer: If you want that double line of stitching that covers the raw edge of your hem on the back of the work, you can use a regular sewing machine and a double needle. It is a stretchable stitch so you can use it on knits or wovens. Double needles come in a couple different widths and aren't very expensive--a lot cheaper than a cover stitch machine! The wrong side of the fabric will look somewhat like it's been zigzagged. You just use 2 spools of thread on top or a spool and a wound bobbin of the same color. That's why there are usually 2 thread pegs on your machine. Hold the 2 threads together & thread the machine as usual until you get to the last 2 thread guides, then separate them so they don't twist together near the needles.

Its industrial-grade blade is manufactured of carbon steel that meets rigorous G3 standards, and as a result can cut evenly and smoothly, even through multiple layers of denim. The heavy duty metal frame provides stability while serging at high speeds, and durability for many years of extended use. The ST4031HD gives you the creative freedom to serge layers of denim, difficult knits and other tough projects with ease.

Tackle heavy fabrics

Serge with confidence on multiple layers of denim, layered knits and heavy duty fabrics. Professionally cut and finish in one easy step on a wide range of projects.

Industrial-grade G3 blade

The Strong & Tough blade is manufactured of carbon steel that meets industrial-grade, G3 standards. This blade material is known for its use in industrial sergers, and its ability to cut a smooth, clean edge through heavy fabrics.

Heavy duty metal frame

The strong interior metal frame helps ensure your serger remains stable on your work surface, even at very high speeds. This heavy duty frame is built for durability and longevity, for many years of extended use.

Wide extension table

The wide, detachable table keeps heavy fabrics on a level surface with the needle, helping to prevent excess pulling on the needle and thread, for better finishing.

Up to 1,300 stitches per minute

Get more serging done, faster, with the ability to sew up to 1,300 stitches per minute. Simply using less pressure on the foot controller allows you to sew slower, to suit your comfort level and project.

Metal thread stand

The Strong & Tough Serger thread stand is made of solid metal, for enhanced durability and longevity. The thread stand helps ensure that the thread feeds up and off your thread spools correctly.

3 or 4 thread capabilities

This serger works with either 3 or 4 threads, for added flexibility. For example, 4 threads are useful for a strong overlock seam on wovens, and 3 threads for overlock stitching on knits or suits.

Color-coded threading guides

The color-coded guides printed on the machine show you exactly where to place each thread, for trouble-free threading. No need to pull out the manual when you want to thread your machine!

Removable trim trap

The trim trap collects the fabric trim as the serger knife trims and serges your project, and can be easily detached from the serger.

Differential feed ratio of 0.7 to 2.0

The differential feed controls the movement of the feed dogs that move the fabric through the machine. The ability to adjust the feed dogs helps provide smooth, even stitching and versatility.

Convenient stitch width control

Simply turn the stitch width adjustment dial to change your stitch width between 5.0mm (3/16 inch) and 7.0mm (9/32 inch). Adjusting the stitch width allows you to create serged seam finishes that lie flat.

Standard foot

The included Standard serging foot is a great general purpose foot for a wide range of everyday serging projects such as seams and rolled hems. Your fabric edge will be sewn and trimmed in one easy step.

Blind hem stitch foot

Create blind hems on a variety of fabrics. This foot is perfect for edge stitching, attaching lace or fabric, and edge joining. An adjustable, open-toed guide makes this a great foot for both embellishing and utility stitching.

Gathering foot

Easy gathering, connecting fabric and edge finishing in one step. A channel on the foot secures fabric, helping to eliminate the need for pins as you create a serged edge and gather single or double layers of fabric.

Janome 634D MyLock Electronic Serger By The Each

Janome

Based on 20 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The Janome MyLock 634D with electronic control is the most advanced MyLock serger. It has 2 needles and 2, 3 or 4 thread overlock stitching. The differential feed ratio, which is adjustable from .05 to 2.25, provides increased control for handling all types of fabrics and for creating desired special effects. Threading is a breeze due to color-coded thread guides and a self-threading lower looper. Simply lay the thread into the guide, flip a switch, and the lower looper is threaded. The guide is automatically returned to its normal position when you turn the balance wheel. And when you lift the presser foot for rethreading, the thread tensions are automatically released so you can draw the thread smoothly. The MyLock 634D also lets you quickly switch to rolled hemming without changing the needle plate. A lower looper pre-tension stitch eliminates the need to change tension for rolled hems.

User questions & answers

Question: What the manufacture of this product
Answer: Mine has. I just change my needles for more heavier weight fabrics. I have used my serger to trim the legs of my adult children’s jeans with no issues.
Question: Is there any serger feet that are available
Answer: It really depends on what you are sewing. I usually use the cheapest cone thread I can find and it works great. But I also use sulky thread when I want to have a fancier rolled hem.
Question: How many stitches per minute
Answer: I can buy special feet like: Piping Foot, Beading Foot, Curved Pearl Foot, Universal Blind Stitch FootThese 8 feet you can buy with 129$
Question: the pictures shows the MO6700 but it says the Juki, MO-50E, is whats for sale, what will we get the one pictured(industrial)or small house machine
Answer: Oh no darling. This one takes a magnifier with the instructions. It arrives pre-threaded, and I suggest you take well lit photos of this with the panel open to see how its threaded. This way you can refer to them rather than the instructions, as one of the illustrations is slightly inaccurate. There is a learning curve to this, but if you are patient and follow the instructions along with your photos, you should be fine. The mistakes I've made are from the threads getting hung up at the spools. Attention to detail is a must with operating one of these, and double check the steps. This must be threaded in a specific order, or it won't work. It does work well, but takes some acclimation. Don't get discouraged. If I had the money, I would have bought a Bernina (made by Juki), or something that is easier to thread. I don't use it enough to warrant a thousand, or two, dollar investment. I got this one at a black friday deal.
