13 best iron on transfer paper for t shirts
Iron-on transfer paper for t-shirts is a popular crafting and DIY tool used to create custom designs, graphics, and text on fabric, especially t-shirts. It falls under the category of heat transfer paper, which is widely used for various creative projects in the realm of sewing, arts and crafts.
Here are some key points about iron-on transfer paper for t-shirts:
Purpose: Iron-on transfer paper is designed to transfer printed designs onto fabric with the application of heat, typically using a household iron or a heat press machine.
Compatibility: It is compatible with various types of fabrics, but it works best on cotton or cotton-blend materials, as they can withstand the heat required for the transfer process.
Printing: You can print your desired design or image onto the transfer paper using an inkjet or laser printer. It's important to choose the right type of transfer paper for your printer type.
Transfer Process: To apply the design to the t-shirt, place the printed side of the transfer paper onto the fabric and use an iron or heat press to apply even pressure and heat. The heat causes the design to transfer from the paper to the fabric.
Cooling and Peeling: After heating, allow the transfer to cool down for a few seconds or minutes, depending on the instructions provided with the transfer paper. Once it's cooled, carefully peel off the backing paper to reveal the transferred design on the t-shirt.
Washing and Care: It's essential to follow the care instructions provided with the transfer paper. In most cases, the printed t-shirt can be washed, but you should avoid using harsh detergents or high-temperature settings in the washing machine to ensure the design's longevity.
Applications: Iron-on transfer paper is commonly used for creating personalized t-shirts, but it can also be used on other fabric items like tote bags, pillowcases, and aprons. It's a versatile tool for adding custom designs to various textiles.
Variety: There are different types of transfer paper available, including light transfer paper for light-colored fabrics and dark transfer paper for dark-colored fabrics. Choose the appropriate type based on the color of the fabric you're working with.
Design Considerations: When designing your transfers, remember that the final result may not always match the colors or quality of the original image. Be mindful of the size, placement, and orientation of your design on the transfer paper.
Creativity: Iron-on transfer paper is a fantastic way to express your creativity and personalize clothing and fabric items. Whether you're making custom gifts or promoting your brand, it offers a relatively easy and cost-effective method for customization.
In summary, iron-on transfer paper for t-shirts is a valuable tool in the world of crafting and DIY, allowing individuals to create custom designs on fabric with ease. It's important to follow the instructions provided with the specific transfer paper you choose to ensure successful and long-lasting results.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I wash in a machine? And how long should I wait before the first wash |
Answer: | The overall length including both connectors is 12 inches. The length of the wire between the connectors is 8 inches. Hope this answers your question. |
Question: | do you need specific ink or can you do use regular ink |
Answer: | How many amps is your charger for that? Also, those golf cart batteries are probably wired up in series so make sure you wore this up properly. These state they are rated to 5amp. I would go online and see what golf cart companies have available, they should have something bigger, the ones I’ve seen are actual three prong plugs like a regular 110 plug |
Question: | will the paper turn clear once it is ironed on |
Answer: | The size depends on which of the three you are interested in. The O-20 takes a 1" or 25mm hole, the O-30 takes a 9/16" 05 14 mm hole with a 14mm barrel and M14 nut, the O-40 takes a 25/32" or 15mm hole. It does not state it, but suspect they all have corresponding sized metric threads. |
Question: | Can a laser printer be used on these |
Answer: | I just pruchased the O-40 version for myoff road trailer as the descriptions says, the iwre is stamped 18 awg. For my powerfilm solar panal this s just fine (had to make a delphi weather pack to SAE adapter as I couldn't find exterior dephi ports only SAE). All the acessory cables and extension cables for the powerfilm solar panels all use 18awg wire. P3Solar panel wires are also 18awg. The weather protection cap on this port is excellent and seems much more protective and durable than others such as zampf. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How well will this work for Christmas stockings |
Answer: | Do you have it on the transfer side instead of the backside..I have made a mistake doing that before and it wouldnt transfer also make sure you take a piece of paper and put it over the transfer so when you put it on it will come off nice and clean or otherwise your print will stick to the iron.. |
Question: | Is the paper compatible with the hp color laserjet series of printers? i have noticed "hp - not recommended" on some other laser-printer papers |
Answer: | it's blank, you make your own image for it. The paper is the size of printer paper. Find a image you like on PC, save, then read, how to make your letters on printer and just print it out. Pray, that helped. |
Question: | Will this work well with a canon imageprograf pro-300 printer or no |
Answer: | I have had the best results using an iron on a HARD surface, such as a board. A padded surface will not work |
Question: | Can you use regular prayer ink or what type of ink do you need |
Answer: | No. It can only be used with inkjet printers. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How closely do you have to cut images? If you don't cut closely enough will there be a white border |
Answer: | Probably not, but it is thin fabric and may get worn out if it's touched a lot. Color will probably stick but may get worn and tear if it's abused. |
Question: | Can i use these on a charcoal gray shirt |
Answer: | According to the instruction I had (2015), you can wash with softner, cold water gentle, no soap. |
Question: | Would this work for printing white font onto black shirts? If so, how would I do this |
Answer: | I have not done it but imagine a fusible backing would work. I’d be careful to pick one that is flexible like fabric rather than stiff. |
Question: | does it work on sweatshirt |
Answer: | My wife uses the basic inkjet sheets. Both are Inkjet Fabric sheets. The "lawn" sheets are slightly higher quality I think. Here is a link to the webpage for the manufacturer of both. http://electricquilt.com/online-shop/lawn-inkjet-fabric/ |

Question: | When I’m getting ready to iron my image on my shirt do I need to peel the back paper part off? The directions don’t say to do this |
Answer: | My understanding is these needles fit Singer sewing machines universally. I’ve even used them on my old sears sewing machine. |
Question: | so lets say i wanted to put an image that has white in it on the dark shirt, would this paper work for that? The white will show up on the shirt |
Answer: | I'd use the 16 on denim only because if you double fabric needles break easier. You can use a 14 but I would use the 16 |
Question: | Will this crack after washing |
Answer: | I purchased these for a Kenmore purchased in the 70's and they work fine. They also fit my more recently purchased Singer 9970. |

Select The Best Paper For Any Job
Whether for professional, creative, or everyday use, HP helps take the guesswork out of finding the perfect inkjet or LaserJet paper for any project.
![]() |
Why HP Paper Is Important
Not all papers are created equal. Designed with each element of the HP printing process in mind, HP papers, toners, and inks are specially engineered to work together to deliver quality, reliable printing, as well as fade resistance, bolder blacks and more vibrant colors.
Because HP papers are specifically formulated to work with HP printers, it's important to select the right HP paper for every job to ensure a crisp, clean finished product.
Key HP Paper Features
Check the label on HP paper packaging to find this key information:
Finish
Consider the look you want to achieve, and choose a finish that fits your needs:
- Glossy: For color images that really pop, try printing on a paper with a glossy finish.
- Matte: If printing a document with text, such as a term paper or resume, a matte finish can make your text easier to read.
- Satin: A satin finish will give your photos a smooth, professional touch.
Brightness
The brightness of your paper refers to the amount of light reflected from the surface of the paper, and is typically measured on a scale from 1 to 100. Print on brighter paper, such as HP Bright White Inkjet Paper, for higher contrast, crisper text, and a clean background for more vivid images.
Weight
Thickness (measured in millimeters) and weight (measured in pounds), refer to the sturdiness and crease-resistance of your paper. HP paper comes in a variety of different weights.
You may try using a heavier paper for artwork or pieces that will be frequently handled, like cards or brochures. Heavier paper can also help formal, more substantial printed pieces, such as resumes and invitations, stand out from the crowd.
![]() |
Size
HP offers many kinds of paper in a variety of sizes, from standard 8.5" x 11" paper, to 4" x 6" and 5" x 7" photo paper, to specialty sizes such as wide format and legal paper.
Not all printers can handle all kinds of paper, so before stocking up, check your printer manual for paper size and weight capabilities.
Choose Paper Suited To Specific Tasks
Whether printing driving directions, invoices, snapshots for the fridge, or formal wedding invitations, HP has the paper you need to get the job done.

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone used these on tech shirts? Ones made for running or working out |
Answer: | The 2010 might have a little larger throat, but it can't do what the F600 can do. Remember, the 2010 is a straight stitch only. So, nothing zig zag. It all depends on how much money you have to spend, and what you intend to do with the machine. The F600 does it all. I Free Motion Quilted a queen size on the F600. So that extra half inch wouldn't have helped much. |
Question: | Do you have to reverse image |
Answer: | Yes, you can do an invisible hem that looks very good. This is a great machine that goes above and beyond the normal everyday sewing machine. Thanks,Oren |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this printable |
Answer: | Yes, you can. I machine quilt over all mine. |
Question: | Can it be used on nylon? I have nylon backpack that I want to personalize |
Answer: | That is what I used! |
Question: | Heading says 20 pack but picture and description reads |
Answer: | No, the paper is clear. You can see it (it's kind of shiny) but no white. I ironed on striped fabric and you could see the stripes under the design. I kind of liked it for what I did, but probably good to know ahead of time. |
Question: | Can this be used on polyester material |
Answer: | I just did a whole bunch of practice transfers on a dark orange shirt and I don't think it's a good idea to print light colors on a dark shirt. Since the transfer material is in essence "clear" putting colored printer ink on top of a colored shirt is like mixing paint. If you put a yellow on a red, it will look orange (yellow + red = orange). Once I ruined my original shirt, I then printed up a bunch of colors in a spectrum (all shades from light to dark). The light colors looked much darker when ironed onto the shirt. No light color still looked light when combined with the shirt. The only color I found acceptable was navy blue. And I actually picked a lighter shade of blue to make it appear navy on the shirt and not black. But blue is complementary with orange. Dark blue would probably look nice on red too, but if you choose a light enough blue so that it still looks blue (and not black) it might print out kind've purply. If you only have one shirt (now I pick up test shirts from Hobby Lobby for under $3), then find a spectrum of the color you wish to use, crop it to just be one long strip, and iron it on to inside of your shirt along the back hem. You will see exactly what the different colors look like and you can choose the right shade. I am so glad I did this with my orange shirts, because I was able to pick the exact shade of blue to make navy blue (when mixed with orange). Good luck! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I print with laser printer |
Answer: | Yes if there's words |
Question: | Can this be used on felt (for flags/pennant |
Answer: | They are rather translucent. But really you don't want to iron blank areas onto your fabric. I cut around my image the best as I can to remove any of the "unused" transfer, before I begin to iron. If the blank areas are "within" your image, or not very large, I would not worry about them and just iron over them. But do remove any blank transfers around the edge of your image. I hope this helps |
Question: | Can this be used on felt (for flags/pennant |
Answer: | No, you should not use this paper with a laser printer (and most print shops will not do it for you) ; the laser printer gets too hot and it can melt the transfer paper. |
Product features
Dark Transfers on dark fabrics
Dark Transfers are opaque after ironing on dark fabrics. Any borders around your design will show up as white.
Dark Transfers on light fabrics
Dark Transfers can also be used on light fabrics and look just as nice.
Light Transfers on dark fabrics
Light Transfers are transparent after ironing. This means the fabric color will show through the design. Depending upon your design, this might not work for you.
Light Transfers on light fabrics
Light Transfers work best and are intended for white, off-white or cream-colored fabrics.
Borders with Dark Transfers
Dark Transfers on dark fabrics:
Dark Transfers are opaque on dark fabrics. Any borders around your design will show up as white. Depending upon your design, this might work for you. If not, please note white borders will show up.
Dark Transfers on light fabrics:
Dark Transfer borders on light fabrics are still visible but not as noticeable due to less contrast in colors. Depending upon your design, this might work for you. If this does not work for your design, try using Light Transfers instead of the Dark Transfers. The Light Transfers will allow the border to blend in more.
Borders with Light Transfers
Light Transfers on light fabrics:
Light Transfers are transparent with borders that are nearly invisible. The Light Transfers coating will adhere to the fabric when you iron. This will happen even in blank areas where there is no design. On that blank area, you may see the coating as “shiny.”
To prevent this, we recommend cutting a 1/8” border around your design. Keeping the border near the design edge will make it almost unnoticeable.
For more complex designs, you can use any desktop cutting machine’s print and cut function. Make sure to lay the Transfer on the cutting mat with the image facing up. This will keep the image from sticking to the mat.
Printing with Dark Transfers
DOUBLE BLUE LINES are the designs on the back of Dark Transfers. For printing, make sure to load the Transfer paper so that the image will print onto the blank matte side, NOT the shiny side with the DOUBLE BLUE LINES.
For Dark Transfers your image does not need to be mirrored.
Note: Use with only inkjet printers.
Printing with Light Transfers
DOUBLE RED LINES are the designs on the back of Light Transfers. For printing, make sure to load the Transfer paper so that the image will print onto the blank matte side, NOT the shiny side with the DOUBLE RED LINES.
For Light Transfers you must flip/mirror the image before printing so your design will not print backwards. This is important if there are numbers or letters in your design.
Note: Use with only inkjet printers.
