12 best laying tool for cross stitch
A laying tool in the context of cross stitch, quilting, sewing, and other arts and crafts, is a small instrument used to aid in the process of creating even and neat stitches. It is a valuable tool, especially in embroidery work where the stitches need to lie flat and in the same direction. Laying tools are commonly used in techniques such as silk shading, goldwork, and surface embroidery.
The primary purpose of a laying tool is to help manage threads and fibers, ensuring they lie smoothly next to each other on the fabric. This creates a polished and professional finish to the embroidery or cross-stitch project. Laying tools come in various forms, such as slender metal or wooden instruments with pointed ends, allowing crafters to manipulate threads with precision.
When working with embroidery floss or specialty threads, crafters often find that these threads can twist and tangle. A laying tool can be invaluable in separating and straightening the threads, preventing knots and ensuring a smooth stitching experience.
To use a laying tool, one end of the thread is anchored to the fabric, and the laying tool is gently pressed against the thread, guiding it into the desired position. By carefully manipulating the thread, crafters can control the tension and direction of the stitches, resulting in a more professional-looking finished piece.
Laying tools are widely available in craft stores and online, often marketed as essential accessories for serious cross-stitchers, embroiderers, and quilters. Crafters may choose laying tools based on personal preference, considering factors such as material, weight, and handle design, to find the most comfortable and effective tool for their projects.

User questions & answers
Question: | How tall is this stand off the ground |
Answer: | As I mentioned previously it works on my low shank but is very tight, I can't adjust it because it is actually the machine part that is so tight not the ruler foot. |
Question: | Has anyone tried this with Edmunds' Handi Clamp product |
Answer: | It depends. It expands to different widths. At maximum that can hold a 90 “ quilt it would need about 95”. The top is about 20” or so deep so that would be the floor footprint. That doesn’t account for space for you and your chair. If you are doing smaller things you may only need 60” or less. |
Question: | How tall is in inches |
Answer: | Mechanically speaking, you could load everything to the middle bar. But I wonder why you would want to load both back and batting on the middle bar? I think the critical difference between loading as instructed, and loading backing and batting on the middle bar is that you have less ability to work out wrinkles as you go (and no matter how careful I am there are always wrinkles) because you have a shorter distance to the front bar from the middle bar. In addition, I think it would hamper your ability to keep the working area as taut as possible. I like to keep my working area as taut as I can make it (even that is sort of against directions) because the looser it is the more it affects your ability to make even stitches. |
Question: | I have this frame but I can't figure out how to get my fabric to stay tight |
Answer: | no |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are these nickel plated? I need a nickel free needle due to nickel allergies |
Answer: | The amount of shine is a function of the grit size, not the "thickness". This product has a super-fine grit that produces a high-gloss shine. If a satin finish is what you're looking for then I would suggest you use something like 0000 steel wool or 400 or higher grit sandpaper. |
Question: | Length of needle |
Answer: | Yes. I recently used on desktop finished with tung oil. I let tung oil dry for couple weeks before putting on restor. |
Question: | Any issues with breaking? My crossstitch needles keep snapping |
Answer: | Restor-A-Shine can be used after Restor-A-Finish on a high gloss wood finish if the Restor-A-Finish with fine steel wool left a dull mark. If your finish is worn down to raw wood then don't use Restor-A-Shine Polishing Compound, instead, follow Restor-A-Finish up with Feed-N-Wax to add some protection and shine to the wood. https://www.amazon.com/Howard-FW0016-Feed-N-Wax-Conditioner-16-Ounce/dp/B001BKQYGW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1520267766&sr=8-3&keywords=feed+n+wax |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are both tips iron-proof it is only the grey tip safe for ironing |
Answer: | It does not have enough of a hook to pull thru pants. For this job I use a "Drawstring Threader" made by Dritz. I am sorry I do not remember where I got it, but it does work really well. |
Question: | Can you buy the silicone replacement tip |
Answer: | Yes, and the end has a slight curve to make it easier to hold down the fabric as you sew into the needle. No more accidentally getting a needle in a finger. Handy for getting thick seams to lay correctly as you sew. Great if you do small things, doll clothes, purses, etc. The other end is great for turning small corners. The center has a slit to pull a piece of elastic through a waistband or making crib sheets with elastic around the edges. |
Question: | Where is this item made |
Answer: | This is adjustable and should work with hoops of every size. |
Question: | I cannot get my tool to twist. I have tried everything. Could someone please tell me which part of the tool on the putty end is supposed to twist |
Answer: | I have not worked from mine yet. I have a needlepoint canvas attached to scrolls and then attached to the clamps. The box says the stand "holds hoops (round or oval) and scroll frames." It does not say what size hoop is required so six inches may be fine. |
Question: | I recently bought this and the putty keeps coming out of the hole, even though I am storing it upright. is it defective |
Answer: | I have just set up my stand with a Q-snap frame. Because the clamp has a nice groove, the frame fits nicely without having to crush it. However, I did have to take the snapping piece of the Q-snap frame off because it let the whole thing twist and turn. Without that piece, the stand holds my Q-snap just like it does a scroll frame. |
Question: | The tip of my QuickStik is filled with putty. Can you tell me how I can clean it out? It bothers me. Otherwise I really like it. Thanks Betty |
Answer: | Yes and no. You can't flip it by twisting it from left to right (or vice versa) due to the length of the screws on either side of the wooden pieces that attach to your scroll/frame/hoop. BUT, I assembled it with the part in the picture that has a slightly pointed tip facing DOWN instead of UP, so I can flip my work straight up for ending stitches, or all the way over if I needed to for some reason. If the twisting motion was super important to access the back of your work then you could probably get a much longer bolt from the hardware store and a piece of wood (to take up the extra space). That would give you enough room to get 360 degree access by twisting your work fro left to right/right to left. |
Question: | I have a problem advancing the tacky solution...the tip will not turn. is it defective |
Answer: | Restor-A-Shine Polishing Compound doesn't have much of a smell, so it can be used indoors with a nearby window open for ventilation. |
