14 best ironing mat for quilting

An ironing mat for quilting is a specialized quilting tool designed to provide a convenient and portable surface for pressing quilt blocks, fabric pieces, and seams during the quilting process. Here's what you need to know about ironing mats for quilting:

  1. Materials and Construction: These mats are typically made from heat-resistant materials, such as heat-reflective or heat-absorbing fabrics, to withstand the high heat of an iron. Some mats have multiple layers to insulate and protect the surface underneath from heat damage.

  2. Size and Portability: Ironing mats for quilting come in various sizes, with the most common being large enough to accommodate standard quilt blocks or fabric pieces. They are designed to be lightweight and easy to carry, making them suitable for quilting retreats or workshops.

  3. Versatility: These mats are not only useful for ironing quilt pieces but also for other sewing and crafting tasks. They can be used for pressing seams, setting appliques, and working on various sewing projects.

  4. Grid Lines and Measurements: Many quilting ironing mats feature grid lines and measurements to help quilters align and trim fabric accurately. This can be especially helpful when cutting pieces for quilting blocks.

  5. Non-Slip Backing: To ensure stability during use, some ironing mats have a non-slip backing that prevents them from moving on your work surface.

  6. Safety Precautions: When using an ironing mat, it's essential to follow safety precautions, such as ensuring that the surface underneath is heat-resistant and flat, and keeping the iron away from the edges of the mat to avoid accidental contact with the work surface.

  7. Maintenance: Ironing mats for quilting are relatively low-maintenance. They can be spot cleaned or gently washed as needed to remove any residue or stains from fabric or interfacing.

These mats are a valuable tool for quilters, providing a convenient and safe way to press fabric without the need for a traditional ironing board. They are designed to streamline the quilting process by keeping all the necessary pressing tools within arm's reach and are especially helpful for those working on smaller quilting projects or in spaces where a full-sized ironing board is not practical.

User questions & answers

Question: Use on wool hooked rug
Answer: I don’t see how you can, unless you place it under the rug and move it around as you iron. This pad is pretty small.
Question: How can I clean my mat
Answer: Dear Customer, Thank you for your great question, If it is necessary to clean your wool mat, you can rinse the mat out in your sink or bathtub with cold water and then hang it up to dry. A gentle rinse should do the trick. Be careful not to rough up the material. Suzanne M - Savina Customer Care.
Question: Is the black residue because of the iron temperature? And, is the surface of the mat smooth
Answer: Hi Juanita. Thank you for your question, with your question, we can explain: this happens, probably because the temperature adjusted by the customer is too high. The temperature is too high to melt the material it is ironing, not the problem of the pressing mat. When the temperature is too high, we can't directly touch the pressing mat with the iron. The temperature is too high, and it will burn out no matter what is used, when burnt it may turn black. We use 100% wool, and there is not a coating on our mats. Pressing mats surfaces are smooth and free from ridges which results in a professional ironing experience, they are flat and convenient for use. Best regards. Suzanne M - Savina Customer Care.
Question: Can you use either side of the mat for ironing
Answer: Yes, you can use both sides of this mat. It’s great for pressing quilt blocks. Use the wool setting on your iron because too much heat will scorch the mat.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this pressing mat require a pressing fabric (i.e. a pillowcase or other fabric on the surface of the mat) before using
Answer: No, the idea of the mat is to prevent distortion of the fabric you are pressing, adding another fabric would prevent the mat from stabilizing the fabric.
Question: What is the purpose of the silicone iron pad
Answer: It is used to place your hot iron in between pressing. Not sure why it is shaped like an iron, I never lay my iron flat, but I do use it to place the iron upright. I think there are irons that do not iron until you press down? I could see this would be handy if you were going portable, as opposed to having your ironing board set up. For whatever reason, I love the wool pressing mat!
Question: Wool ironing padAre there ripples on the surface
Answer: No ripples, the wool ironing pad keeps your fabric stable while ironing.
Question: Does this pressing mat require a pressing fabric (i.e. a pillowcase or other fabric on the surface of the mat) before using
Answer: No, not required. You might want to use a thin cotton pressing cloth to keep the mat clean, but anything heavier might impeded the purpose of using a wool mat.

Wool Pressing Pad - 24in x 18in Quilting Ironing Pad - Easy Press Wooly Felted Iron Board for Quilters, Great for Quilting Sewing Projects

Based on 556 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Pure and Natural - 100% wool, fleeced and tightly felted to make the Quilter's Pressing Pad the perfect ironing surface for all your quilt block and small fabric pressing needs.

Steam or other sprays are unnecessary because wool actually absorbs moisture from the air as heat is applied.

This creates an additional heat source underneath your fabric, giving you crisp precision as you iron. This is by far the best ironing surface I have ever used - it is truly that fabulous!

One of those investments and tools you won't want to be without whenever you sit down to sew.

TIPS:

- Always have your iron setting to WOOL or MEDIUM HEAT for best results.

-Do not leave your iron on the Pressing Pad for too long.

- Because of how wool absorbs moisture from the air, always use your Quilter’s Pressing Fleece on a water resistant surface.

- -The Pressing Pad is made of wool, so be sure to store it in a well lit room or airtight container.

- For someone who is sensitive to the wool fragrance the wool may create a scent when used with steam. You may be able to smell a slight odor in the beginning. However, it will disappear soon after your ironing is done.

- Most modern irons use pressurized steam, and since the wool mats are porous products, it is quite likely that steam will go through the mats. When you iron on our wool mats it's like ironing from both sides, so we recommend using a dry iron for best results.

-The pressure Mat has a slight smell of wool in the beginning; however, there is no smell after using it twice. The odor will not be transferred to your fabric.

User questions & answers

Question: This is supposed to be 100% wool, but it’s leaving black yuck on my iron, like the fibers are melting. This has ruined my iron
Answer: Happened to me, too, on the first time use: dry iron, set on cotton. Nothing between the iron and the mat. The surface fell a little sticky. Then black gunk came off on the white fabric I tried to press. Thought it might have been leftover starch. Cleaned the iron. Tried again in a new spot. Same gunk. It's like there is is polyester mixed with the described 100% wool. The surface of the mat felt rough like there were melted fibers. I'm thinking it's not 100% wool. Sure doesn't act like it.
Question: I see steam is not recommended, and that concerns me. Am I the only quilter who uses steam when pressing seams
Answer: I purchased a larger wool mat a few weeks ago and now prefer that to the ironing board. I do not use steam when pressing quilt seams because the steam can distort the fabric, especially if cut on the bias. And, yes, you can absolutely use steam on a wool pressing mat!
Question: Would this mat help with ironing floor sack towels
Answer: I'm guessing you mean flour sack towels, not floor sack. I use this mat for pressing my quilting fabric which are 100% cotton and it works great. It's the best thing in my quilting room. I would highly recommend this product. It really does help get the wrinkles out of fabric.
Question: Can I cover the wool mat with a cotton fabric cover
Answer: Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of the wool mat?

EFFICIENT PRESSING

Our superior 100% New Zealand wool provides a soft and smooth surface for ironing, creating a professional ironing experience.

PORTABLE FOR TRAVEL

With a portable tabletop ironing board, going to classes and working on projects anywhere in your studio just become easy! Your ironing will never be the same!

QUALITY MATTERS

Don't be fooled by other "wool" ironing mats. Most companies use inferior wool with poor processing. This can lead to other material mixed in with the wool causing rough patches and catching fabric, along with poor heat retention. Uneven ridges can lead to unsatisfactory ironing results.

The premium 100% New Zealand wool means our mats don't smell strongly like sheep, unlike competitors mats.

Use and Care Instructions

You can use any setting on your iron including the wool setting when ironing. We do not recommend using starch however alternatives such as Best Press can be used.

Your mat can be placed on any surface for ironing. However, we do not recommend using steam when ironing as wool is a porous material so heavy steam might go through. For best results use a dry iron. Do not put your wool mat on top of a cutting mat due to the extreme sensitivity cutting mats have to heat.

If it is necessary to clean your wool mat, you can rinse the mat out in your sink or bathtub with cold water and then hang it up to dry. A gentle rinse should do the trick. Be careful not to rough up the material.

User questions & answers

Question: how much does the shipped package weigh? I live overseas and can only receive items of one pound or less
Answer: It is shipped in a box that is just larger than the matt. They don't want to bend it. I don't know the weight, but I'm sure it is close to 1 pound. Email the seller, they should be able to answer that question. There should be a contact at the bottom of the sale page.
Question: How to clean
Answer: I use lint roller for thread. If whole thing needs cleaned I would go to dry cleaner
Question: Can you use starch
Answer: I don't use starch in my patchwork; or at all, really. How does that work on your regular ironing board cover; does it build up? Since the mat is the same on both sideI guess you could designate one side for starch and not use starch on the other side.
Question: Has anyone had a problem with the fibers melting and transfering a grayish/black film on fabric
Answer: I have used my mat for small parts of larger projects with a craft iron next to my sewing machine without this problem. It has not been used all over or with a full size iron or on both sides so when this question came up I decided to test it. I heated my full size iron on COTTON and with full steam. I pressed several times all over the mat and on both sides and did so on a piece of scrap fabric for about twenty minutes. I had no issue with any kind of film being transferred to my fabric with or without steam. Have you brought this up with the manufacturer? Good luck!

Question: Melted on to my iron (high setting), difficult to get off iron. Anyone else have this issue
Answer: Have you tried spraying your iron with a grease reliever and using a steel sponge to scrub? I have never let my iron touch the wool mat. These mats really heat up so you have to be careful with the surface they are on also. One lady cracked her granite counter top using her mat. I stick a wooden board under mine. U dont need a high heat on your iron-moderate will do. Hope you are Able to get your iron clean again. Naybe goo gone will do the trick. Goid luck.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i use this on top of foam mattress
Answer: It still gets a bit hot underneath, so I would suggest putting a towel under it.
Question: Will it warp my cutting matt
Answer: I assume you mean you will be placing the mat on top of your cutting mat before you iron?? I wouldn’t think it would cause any problems.
Question: Is it waterproof? Meaning if i do high steam -will it soak through out the bottom and make the counter wet
Answer: Tried and failed, it will make the counter wet.
Question: Has anyone used the pad on a wooden tabletop? The manufacturer seems to recommend against it
Answer: I used this on another ironing pad for sewing and it did get very warm underneath. It did leave some quilting marks. For small seams while sewing, not a problem if padded, but for ironing an entire shirt, you could hurt your finished table. Suggest padding with folded sheet and using an area that is not the dining room table. I did like the silicone pad for the iron. It actually would be more useful as a rectangle vs an iron shape.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the table or surface under the mat get hot
Answer: No smaller mat was included but the iron rest is sized to fit a standard iron.
Question: Is this 100% wool
Answer: china
Question: Where is this product made and what type of wool is used
Answer: Size medium
Question: Can this be used with a Cricut Easy Press
Answer: No , it is regular size. I am 6 ft 2 in. I have worn JC Penny brand heavy weight cotton v neck for about 25 years. This stafford is anout 1 inch longer than J.C. Penny v neck. I can wear either large or xl. The latge in these shirts is slightly largrr than J.C. Penny of same heavy weight cotton. I like these better. The Penny brand usually last 5 years with regular washing with bleach since i only use them for sleeping. Could not find them online at Penny,s bc of the bankrupcy i guess. They have a blue and black of this shirt but Penny,s inventory is always low or nill. I would rate this as a strong 5 star for weight ,quality, and fit.

User questions & answers

Question: My mat developed little bumps on both sides. Does anyone know why
Answer: I have my mat on my dining room table. I have used the 17" x 24 " several times but have never checked to see if its hot underneath it. I am assuming not, i have had no issues and love my mat! By the way, so does my cat, she likes to use it for a scratching post so I keep it covered, just with whatever I have on hand to keep the cat away! I ironed my mat with nothing on top of it to get the fibers to migrate back down, worked like a charm!
Question: How come my mat is burning and leaving stuff on my iron
Answer: Yes. 100% wool. Thank you!
Question: Can you use this with the Cricut easy press
Answer: It is my understanding they are all 100 percent wool. The ones I purchased were made in New Zealand.
Question: Is it manufactured in u.s.a
Answer: I have used mine with the Cricut Easy Press with no problems.
