| Answer: | I got a piece of quarter inch plywood just slightly larger than my mat. Lowes cut the piece for me. I sanded it all around the edges. On the back I cut a piece of felt to meet the edges then took paint brush and covered wood with elmer's a little watered down. Pressed the felt and smoothed out and let dry overnight. I took an old belt or you could use a cloth woven belt like come with some men's summer pants and cut a piece maybe 10 inches long. I used a heavy duty staple gun to attach the belt piece - one end one one side and the other end on the other side about 4 inches apart. Makes a great handle that is easy to manage. I glued the mat to the plain side of the wood and let dry overnight. It is a dream cause it is big enough to give me plenty of cutting space and it holds my 36x48 mat. I used a smaller mat for a while and it just became a hastle. My table is smaller that 36x48 but I can lay the board on the table and still cut, then put it away after. for smaller trimming and smaller cuts I still use the 18x24 that stays on the table all the time. |

| Answer: | Melody I am very sensitive to chemical and other odors myself, but I do not recall smelling anything from this mat. Maybe only a slight smell from the plastic that it was wrapped in. This is the nicest mat I have ever used. I love the thick layers, whereas other mats (and I have tried them all) seem to get grooves in them or turn to a sandpaper feeling after heavy use. I was at a quilt show before I bought this mat and they were selling small squares of some kind of plastic or acrylic material (about 4" square) that you use to rub on your mat after using it because the plastic square helps to remove the fabric and batting that can get trapped while you are cutting. The plastic square works well to keep the mat looking and working nicely. Thought I would let you know if you are using this mat for fabric cutting. If you detect an odor in the mat, you might want to place the mat outside on a flat surface and let it air out for a couple of days. It would be worth doing that as this mat is the best one around that I have found. I have been quilting for well before there were mats and rotary cutters to use! |
