Answer: Fantastic product! I will keep on buying this ladle forgift for my friends.
Question: Are these professional artist paints, I don't want student grades

Cotman Water Colours are a range of water colours that are made to our normal high quality standards but costs are kept to an economical level by replacing some of the more costly pigments with less expensive alternatives. The range consists of 40 colours which possess good transparency, excellent tinting strength and good working properties.

Pigments

Costs are kept to an economical level by replacing some of the more costly pigments with less expensive alternatives. Pigments derive from a number of sources: Some are natural products, notably the earths, eg. umbers, ochres; others come from metal compounds and are sometimes termed 'traditional' or 'genuine', eg. ultramarine.

The distillation of petroleum yields an ever widening range of organic pigments which are often termed as 'modern'. Many of the pigments used in Cotman are organic.

Colour Range

The Cotman Water Colour range has a more uniform consistency than the Professional Water Colour range and this benefits beginners as there is less to learn about each individual pigment. The Cotman Water Colour range also relates to the Winsor & Newton Professional Water Colour range, e.g. Burnt Sienna in both ranges has the same hue. This enables artists to use colours from both ranges with minimal adjustment to their technique.

White in the Range

Traditionally the white of the paper provides the brilliance to water colour and can be used as highlights. However, some artists utilize Chinese White for highlights at the end of their painting or in dulling some colour mixtures down.

User questions & answers

Question: Are these artist's colors or Cotman colors
Answer: Yes. This is a 45 half pan set of the W&N Cotman series, which is their student line for the beginning artist.
Question: How do you secure the watercolor pans inside of the case so they don't slide around
Answer: closed it is 4.5 x 10.5 inches. opened all the way it is 10.5 x 12.75 45 half pans. Some of the reds, blues, yellows and browns are duplicates...which is why I bought mine...I'm using it to refill my smaller field kit. I found it to be cheaper to buy this large studio set than individual half pans in quantity.
Question: Is this a knock-off? it looks different on d. blick; the pan wrappings, the $42.88 price difference, etc. is it actually good quality
Answer: It has all 40 standard Cotman watercolors (I believe these ones http://tinyurl.com/mq9o5fl) plus 5 repeated colors
Question: Please list the colors included in the set
Answer: No, the Cotman line from Winsor & Newton is their student grade line, and it contains 40 paints. Their professional line is called Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolours, and they cost much more than Cotman watercolour sets. For example, the Winsor & Newton Cotman field kit of 12 colours costs approximately $50, whereas the Winsor & Newton Professional Artist's field kit of 12 colours would run approximately $100 or more. I've been a visual artist/creative professional for nearly twenty years, and I've been using Winsor & Newton products (as well as several other brands) for even longer. The Cotman watercolour line, while being a student grade line, is still very good quality; in fact, there are some professional artists who use Cotman (I've seen portraitists and botanical artists who choose Cotman specifically because it handles well with the way they work), while many others prefer the dense pigmentation of the Professional line. It's all a matter of personal taste and your preferred method of working. In my opinion, this Cotman set would make a fine addition to any artist's media stash. Tip: to get the most vibrancy of your pan colours, spritz them with a little water (or put a small drop of water on the pan colour/s you'd like to use), and let it sit for a moment to moisten and activate. After it's moistened, when you go to use that colour, you'll experience a vibrancy that can rival some professional paints.

User questions & answers

Question: Are colors in english
Answer: I have traveled across the world with this and kept it in a small ziplock baggie, and even when the colors are a bit moist there is no leaking into the bag that I've experienced.
Question: Can you buy the refills for the pocket box
Answer: I have the 48 half pan set and I have had this palette for three years and It has lasted me! You can buy cartridges to replace the colors instead of a whole new palette. I love this palette! It is my first palette that I can refill! The paints are beautiful and I love combining this palette with tubes as well! But anyways to answer your question they will last you a long time! I have half pans that are lasting me forever and I paint every day! And these are full pans so they really will last you! I highly recommend these!
Question: Are the Artist's watercolors the same as Professional or the same as Cotman
Answer: I have looked for them but can't find them anywhere. What I'm going to do is use Aleenes repositional glue and glue the pans in. You can get pans the cheapest on eBay. With the glue you can make glue balls that holds well, but is not permanent. I think this will work.
Question: I love my winsor and newton cotman series of watercolors. what advantages would i see with the professional series
Answer: The pallet is plastic
Question: When using this where do you put the water, except on the paints.......do most people carry a little water dish or
Answer: If you search for "empty half pans" in Amazon's search field, you will find a bunch of sellers...
Question: Can anyone tell me what paints are in this kit
Answer: I've read (on Winsor Newton's info page) that you cannot refill half pans with Winsor Newton watercolor tube paints, as they are formulated differently and will not work well when completely dry. However, Daniel Smith and Holbein watercolors can be used to refill your half pans. M. Graham also works well though they take a long time to dry in a pan because they have honey in them.

Winsor & Newton Professional Water Colour

Since 1832 when Henry Newton and William Winsor introduced the first moist water colours to the world, much of our reputation for supreme quality has stemmed from the Professional Water Colour range.

Since then Professional Water Colour continues to be formulated and manufactured according to our founding principles; to create an unparalleled water colour range which offers artists the widest and most balanced choice of pigments with the greatest possible permanence.

Each colour within this wide and balanced spectrum of colours, has been selected and formulated to offer the greatest choice so that artists can use a unique palette that best suits their work.

This lightweight, compact box contains everything required for outdoor painting. The durable plastic box contains: one Pocket Brush, one Artists’ Sponge, a 35ml capacity water bottle, a Water container, twelve Half pans of Professional Water Colour including Winsor Lemon Yellow, Winsor Yellow, Winsor Red, Permanent Alizarine Crimson, French Ultramarine, Winsor Blue (Green Hue), Winsor Green (Yellow Umber), Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Ivory Black, Chinese White. Actual contents may vary.

Pigments

We use single pigments wherever possible. Single pigment formulations are purer in hue and cleaner in colour than mixtures of pigments, providing a larger number of colour mixes before resulting in muddy effects. Within the new Professional Water Colour range there are 75 single pigments amounting to 78% of the range.

Unrivalled Transparency

Our Professional Water Colour exhibit unrivaled transparency due to the unique pigment dispersion in the manufacture of the colour. This is particularly important because transparency is the key characteristic of water colour. As a result of the thinness of the water colour film, all colours have a transparent quality on paper, allowing the reflective white of the paper to shine through. However, pigments do retain their natural characteristics to some degree. For example, transparent pigments refract light in much the same manner as stained glass, making jewel-like brilliance and clean mixing. Opaque colours such as cadmiums are likely to cover significantly more than transparent colours.

Permanence

93 out of 96 colours in the Professional Water Colour range are classed as 'permanent for artists' use'. This means that 97% of our Professional Water Colour are rated AA or A for permanence to ensure that the colours used today will appear the same for generations to come.

User questions & answers

Question: Does French ultramarine blue stain the paper? Or can it be lifted
Answer: The "secret" to this, as I recall, is to slowly add a dollop or small layer of the tube color into the pan (or over a little remaining paint in the pan. Let that dry, add some more, let that dry, add a little more etc....This way you get succeeding little dried layers to add a little more over...hope that makes sense. Regards.
Question: Why does your website list cobalt turquoise as pb28 & pg36, but amazon only list one pigment (pg36)? is this a different formula
Answer: i believe the cotman brand implies the paint is more of a student/hobbyist paint. i think this product ( http://www.amazon.com/Winsor-amp-Newton-Artists-Compact/dp/B000N85WVQ/ref=pd_sbs_hg_7 ) has the paint you are looking for, though i prefer the carrying case that you asked about here, that holds the cotman paints. i mix the artist grade paint and the cotman paint all the time and really get good results from both, if that matters to you.

However, some artists will not use black in a painting but rather mix a color (maybe using a blue and a brown for example) that gives the impression of black or an absence of light. This is because true black rarely occurs in nature and is more suited to non-realistic styles of art. But to each their own; there is no wrong way to paint!

Pigments

Water colour more than any other medium relies upon the variable characteristics of the pigments used. Wherever possible, single pigments have been used in the Professional Water Colour range. Single pigment formulations are purer in hue and cleaner in colour than mixtures of pigments, providing a larger number of colour mixes before resulting in muddy effects.

User questions & answers

Question: whats the difference between pocket plus and sketchers
Answer: The brush is approximately a #6 and 4.5" long. I am getting one of the store-in-the-handle ones because I personally prefer a longer handle. The one it comes with is of good quality. So if you are comfortable with a short brush you will be fine. Best of luck.
Question: What are the measurements of the box
Answer: Colors are: Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red Pale Hue, Cadmium Red Hue, Alizarin Crimson Hue, Purple Lake, Ultramarine, Cerulean Blue Hue, Viridian Hue, Sap Green, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Chinese White
Question: Does this come with a brush
Answer: 'Cotman' is Windsor & Newton's brand name for their student grade watercolors. Their professional watercolors are called "Artist". That said, Cotman paints are excellent quality, better than one might expect for something with the 'student' label.
Question: Is there 2 of each color in the box? The title says 12 half pans then under it says:Cotman Pocket PLUS Set with 24 colors in half pans. Confusing
Answer: The trays were sealed when the kit arrived. I assume that is what you mean? After removing the original seal, and once the kit is completely closed, the paints are sealed inside the kit. This is a great travel palette and the paints, when moistened, turn to a buttery consistency. I highly recommend this product.

Winsor & Newton Cotman Water Colour
