Use painter’s tape to secure or mask off areas of the design

For acrylics or other wet mediums, remove excess from the brush or applicator when loading. Apply mediums in multiple layers, as dryly as possible to prevent bleed-under.

For dimensional mediums (i.e. pastes, frostings for cakes & cookies), apply with offset spatula or palette knife. Remove stencil by lifting straight up.

Position Your Stencil

For best results, place the surface flat to be stenciled. If you're stenciling on a wall or curved surface, low-tack adhesive can be used (please note that this may make the stencil harder to reuse and store). TIP: We highly recommend using painter's tape - just a few pieces will hold your stencil in place.

Load Your Brush

The key to stenciling is using as little paint as possible. Use a dome or stencil brush with short, medium-stiff natural fibers. Acrylic paints and other, thicker paints & mediums work best with the least bleed under (if you use a thin medium, use as little as possible).

Dip the brush into just a little paint, then rub off vigorously onto a paper towel, as if you're trying to clean the brush. TIP: If it looks wet, it's probably too much paint.

Apply Your Paint

Apply the paint carefully with a tapping or swirling motion. Start lightly and adjust pressure as needed. The first coat should be very dry and transparent. You can lift a corner of the stencil (carefully!) to check your progress. Apply 2-3 coats as needed until the desired color is achieved.

TIP: With the stencil in place, you can use multiple colors and techniques to create stunning effects. Shade/highlight, ombre, add glitter to wet paint, and more.

Reveal Your Art!

Once finished, remove the tape on all but one side. Start at one corner, then lift up and away towards the taped side like a lid. If you've made a mistake or had some bleed-under, use a detail brush or sandpaper to touch up the edges.

Clean the stencil with soap and warm water, and hang to dry. Some mediums may stain the stencil but will not affect its performance.
