13 best jacquard tie dyes
Jacquard tie-dye refers to a particular technique used in fabric decorating and the creation of unique and colorful patterns on textiles. It is commonly associated with arts, crafts, and sewing projects. Here's what you need to know about jacquard tie-dyes:
Tie-Dyeing Technique: Tie-dyeing is a process of adding vibrant and multicolored patterns to fabric. Jacquard tie-dye is a specific method that involves using Jacquard brand products to achieve the desired results. Jacquard is a well-known brand that produces a range of dyes and textile art supplies.
Materials: To create jacquard tie-dye designs, you will need various materials, including Jacquard Procion MX dyes, soda ash, and fabric or clothing items made of natural fibers like cotton. The Procion MX dyes are known for their vibrant and long-lasting color.
Tying and Binding: The "tie" in tie-dye refers to the process of folding, tying, and binding the fabric in different ways. This is done to create distinctive patterns on the fabric.Common techniques include accordion folding, scrunching, and using rubber bands or string to bind the fabric.
Dye Application: After the fabric is tied or bound in the desired pattern, the Jacquard Procion MX dyes are mixed with water and soda ash to create a dye solution. The dyes are then applied to the fabric, saturating it with the chosen colors. The dye may be applied in various ways, including using squeeze bottles, brushes, or other tools.
Setting the Dye: Once the fabric has been dyed, it needs to be allowed to "cure" or set. This usually involves wrapping the fabric in plastic and leaving it to sit for several hours to allow the dye to bond with the fibers. The soda ash helps fix the dye to the fabric.
Rinsing and Washing: After curing, the fabric is rinsed and washed to remove excess dye. This process may need to be repeated until the water runs clear, indicating that the excess dye has been removed.
Unveiling the Design: Once the fabric is thoroughly washed and dried, the tied and bound areas are untied, revealing the intricate and colorful patterns created by the dye.
Jacquard tie-dye allows for a wide range of creative expression, and the possibilities for patterns and color combinations are virtually limitless. This technique is often used to make unique clothing, accessories, and textiles for various crafts and artistic projects.

Question: | How large of a piece of cotton-linen can dye a solid shade in the 5 gallon bucket without running into issues |
Answer: | I think just less vibrant red. But you can mix the colors to make other colors. They come out nice. |
Question: | Is this product environment friendly |
Answer: | You can dye a bunch with one kit. I used this at a bday party for 10 5-7yrs olds and 6 adults. This is hard for little kids under 8 the nozzel is seriously hard to push. I'd get 2 packs its hard passing 3 bottles around. Adults can really stretch the 18 shirts per bottle |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this work on a hiking back pack |
Answer: | The soda ash sets the color into the fabric so the blue doesn't wash out with future washes. Some comes with the kit. |
Question: | Will this dye set on nylon material |
Answer: | I have never dyed fabric, only skeins of yarn. Sorry I can't answer your question.......... |
Question: | Can this dye jute |
Answer: | The process that indigo has to go through to become an effective dye has the potential to harm the environment - I can't find any info on how Jacquard processes their indigo, so I can't say for sure. Either way, natural indigo dye is definitely more environmentally friendly than its synthetic counterparts. Also, what is cool about this kit is that it comes with a brief history of indigo dye! |

Kids will groove to the tie dye art while their parents will dig the fact that this kit's squirt bottles make the pre-measured dye easy to mix, apply, clean-up and store. With ordinary tap water and the kit's supplies (rubber gloves and bands, four bottle applicators, dye fixer, and red, blue and yellow dye), young artists can bring retro flair and fun to shirts, socks, pants, aprons, and a host of other possibilities. Easy-to-follow instructions and enough dye to design 15 T-shirts make this a good family or group activity.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can anybody tell me how to wash this paint from the stencil templates |
Answer: | Yes. You need to use 100% cotton or other natural fabric for best results. If you want to dye poly, it takes a special product for synthetics. If you dye with blends, the poly part will not dye. The cotton part will. It might be an interesting effect. Try a small piece and see what you get. Plus, things loose a lot of brightness as the colors set and dry. And you may lose more color when you first wash the garment. And that kit will not dye 15 shirts. More like 5. |
Question: | How well does this work for block printing and stamping on cotton |
Answer: | Well, I have used both types of dye. The Jacquard takes an extra step that Tulip does not. The Jacquard colors are also much brighter and vivid when complete. I have never mixed them. |
Question: | how much surface area does each jar paint? how many t shirts one sided could I paint |
Answer: | It only comes with red, blue, and yellow. You have to mix the various colors to make the other options you want. It should have came with instructions on how to make all the other options. Hope that helps! |
Question: | How do you wash clothing that has been colored so that coloring is preserved |
Answer: | We made 4 adult and 4 kid shirts plus a pair of sneakers and still had dye left over. It depends on how crazy everyone gets. Have everyone decide on what design and colors they want to use beforehand. We also used some cooking grates (bought at the dollar store) over rectangular bins. Choose a color and have everyone who wants to use that color to do so with their t-shirt on the grate over the bin and collect the spill over dye back into the squeeze bottle with a funnel. Rinse grate and bins and repeat with another color. Sounds a bit overkill, but it will guarantee not running out of dye. The dye is indeed professional as my T hasn't faded one bit one year later. Have fun! |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do I prepare this product: washing machine, spot dye, or other? Thank You |
Answer: | Just soak them in warm to hot water for a few minutes . After that , rubbing a little soap on the stencil should help the paint to slide off. Rinse and pat dry. |
Question: | I plan on using this brand of dye (assorted colors) to dye 100% cotton rugs. Can you tell me what other products I might need to buy |
Answer: | It works very well. I block print with it on dark fabrics- if your question is about the jaquard super opaque- it works great. |
Question: | How colorfast is this dye? Can the resulting fabric/clothes be washed with warm water |
Answer: | If you do not thin the paint down further and do not apply really thick coats, one of the 2.25 oz bottles could easily cover up to 6 square feet of surface. |
Question: | How much liquid dye does each container make |
Answer: | I haven't tried yet on this product, but many colors can be set by soaking overnight in a bucket of strong salt water... maybe cup of salt. next day the water may have a pink to red tint. If you want to use multiple colors you will have to set them individually |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many adult shirts will this pack make? We are having a big tie dye party at my work and want to have enough |
Answer: | Very simple to prepare...instructions in packaging. I simply mixed with warm water and used from a squirt bottle on pre-folded shirts ready to dye. |
Question: | Question: I am wondering if I can use rit powder dye mixed with cornstarch and some linseed oil and make a paste for painting on polymer clay craft |
Answer: | Tracy. If you plan on vat dying look into getting the big bottles of powdered dye either from Jacquard direct or from Dharma trading. These little bottles are only meant to make 2 cups of dye at the correct concentration. Yes you should prewash with a good detergent like syntropol or Dharmas pro detergent. Then soak your rugs in a solution of 1 c soda ash per gallon of water (can use super washing soda, it's the same thing and cheaper) If you have hard water you may need a water softener like Calgon. If you are using dark colors you'll need pickling salt and urea to make your dye solution. The darker the color the more Salt. Gloves are a given.... but I suggest drop clothes and a good vinyl apron (cut one from an old felt backed plastic table cloth) Remember these dyes require a 24 hours processing time after you've dyed your item. put them in garbage bags and set them somewhere warm. Then you can rinse and wash. |
Question: | What is the container size of these powder dyes, how many oz in each container?.....Thanks |
Answer: | I have washed the shirts that I have Dyed in warm water and the color has remained bright and Distinct. |
Question: | Can these be used for bath bombs |
Answer: | It can make a lot of dye! I found a recipe card on the Jacqard website. It shows how much of each powder to make a certain color. Very cool!! For a 4-6 oz bottle, you only need about 1-2 teaspoons of dye. |
Product description

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used in a hobby craft sprayer |
Answer: | Go to this website to get correct answers to your dyeing questions. They say 6 2-oz jars should be able to dye 100 adult (average size large) shirts. You'll have people wasting dye, putting on more than they need but this is a good guide. Sodium Carbonate (soda ash - used to raise the Ph of pool water) is what you need for a fixative (nothing else) and is absolutely necessary (instructions on this page say it helps retain the dye - none of the dye will be retained without it). You can use Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda (be certain it's super washing soda) which you can find in the grocery store or Walmart). The ingredient is just sodium carbonate, which is what is used to raise the Ph of the cotton so that it will accept the bond with the dye. You do NOT mix it with the dye itself or the dye is no good after about an hour. Tumbling a soda ash soaked item in the dryer does nothing to the soda ash in the shirt. Once it's in the shirt it's done it's job and washing it in water is the only thing that will ruin it (by washing it out of the cotton). Do not go by the instructions here in this page that say to use 2 tablespoons per 8 ounces of water. That is very wasteful. Lighter colors need just 2 teaspoons, midrange colors need 4 and blacks need 8. Go here and look up things about Procion mx dyes (what these are) and you'll find good instructions as well as design tutorials (many can be found on youtube). https://www.dharmatrading.com/ |
Question: | How much is in each bottle |
Answer: | you can use chalk paint on "already baked" clay...also, you can make chalk paint by using 1tsp of calcium carbonate (very cheap and can be ordered on amazon, or you can use plaster of paris which homedepot carries) to 1 bottle of craft paint...the more chalk you add, the more powdery your dried paint will be...very cool effects on clay jewelry and the like |
Question: | How permanent is the finished look on shirts |
Answer: | 8 oz |
Question: | Can this be used on merino wool |
Answer: | if you want to make colored bath bombs use hi end cake decorating/food coloring past...these are highest quality pigments that are FDA edible, and therefore non-toxic...all PAINT pigments contain heavy metals that are dangerous for your health |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are the colors pre measured into the bottles |
Answer: | Yes this can be sprayed. I want to say though that spraying dyes is more of a health hazard than spraying paints. Dyes can damage the delicate structures of the lungs. Best to wear a mask, and really a respirator if you spray them regularly. They can be mixed with both alcohol(get darker in ethanol than isopropyl alcohol) or water. Basic dyes are one of the best for spraying because they stick very quickly. |
Question: | If you dye on a printed tee will it change the color of the print (screen or digital |
Answer: | It's about 1/2 oz ~14 grams. basic dyes are stronger than other dyes. 2-3% weight of the fabric gives you a deep color on acrylic or silk. One bottle is enough to dye 2 lbs deeply and probably 10lb a lighter version of the color. |
Question: | is this dye non-toxic |
Answer: | On a silk or acrylic garment this is a very permanent dye, but on cotton it tends to bleed. This dye will work on cotton, but if you want a permanent dye for your standard t-shirt, procion MX is the dye to use. Basic dyes are for leather, acrylic, wood and silk. |
Question: | what dye colors are included in this kit |
Answer: | I’m using it on cotton it fades a lot I expect same would be true for wool. I love the set am having fun playing with the colors the fading is good with me. Color quality is fantastic. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this be enough to dye a full set of seat covers for a vehicle |
Answer: | The premeasured dyes are already in the bottle for you. Just add Water! This is fantastic kit! I have used them for many occasions. dye sets great.. does not fade or bleed on my laundry. I have used it on all natural fabrics. Cotton, (even some blended cotton fabs, like leggins!) Silk and bamboo! The dye works awesome! and it is terrific fun! I give it 5 stars! |
Question: | Does it come with rubber bands |
Answer: | Yes it will dye the print as well not as intense as the blank fabric but it will have some effect. Just go for it you will have a unique piece |
Question: | Does the instructions tell how to make words with the type dye |
Answer: | Yes i believe so. Follow the directions. Mix accordingly and wear the gloves provided |
Question: | How long does each bottle last |
Answer: | Red, yellow and blue. You get a bottle for each of those colors plus a four to mix either orange, green or purple. May I suggest to you that you make orange because the lighter colors are the hardest to create and keep while dying. Seems like yellow is always the color you run out of first. |
