Stains in the Context of Ceramics and Pottery
When referring to ceramics and pottery, stains are not undesirable marks as in everyday language but rather are deliberately added materials that impart color to clay, slips, and glazes. These stains can be created from various metal oxides and other compounds that provide a wide range of colors. Here's a breakdown:
Types of Stains:
- Underglaze Stains: Used underneath a glaze, these are applied to the bisque-fired ceramic ware.
- Overglaze Stains: Applied over a glaze and then fired at a lower temperature.
- Body Stains: Incorporated directly into the clay body itself, altering the clay's color.
- Slip Stains: Added to liquid clay slips used for decoration or casting.
Components of Stains:
- Metal oxides like cobalt (blue), copper (green or turquoise), iron (brown or rust), manganese (purple or brown), and chromium (green) are some examples.
- Other colorants like zirconium can produce yellows, and tin can produce white. Rutile can be a source of tan or brown.
Application Methods:
- Brushing: Using various brushes to apply the stain.
- Sponging: Applying with a sponge for specific effects.
- Spraying: For an even coating, stains can be sprayed onto the piece.
- Dipping: Immersing the pottery into a stain solution.
Factors Affecting the Appearance of Stains:
- Clay Body: The clay's color and texture can influence the final appearance of the stain.
- Firing Temperature: Some stains may change color or intensity based on the firing temperature.
- Thickness of Application: Heavier applications can lead to darker or more intense colors.
- Glaze Interactions: Some glazes may react with the stain, changing its appearance.
Safety:
- Always work in a well-ventilated area when handling stains. Some stains can be toxic or harmful when inhaled.
- Use gloves to prevent skin contact.
- Keep stains away from food surfaces and areas where food is prepared.
Fixing Mistakes:
- If a mistake is made when applying stains, it might be possible to sponge off the stain while it's still wet.
- For dried stains, a gentle scraping or sanding might be effective, but care should be taken to avoid damaging the pottery surface.
Sealing and Protecting:
- Once the desired stain effect is achieved, it's often a good idea to apply a clear glaze over the stain to protect it and give the piece a polished appearance. The glaze also makes the pottery more functional, especially for items like dishes and mugs.
Stains offer a rich palette of colors and effects for ceramic artists, making them a popular choice for those looking to add a splash of color or intricate designs to their pottery pieces. Whether you're a beginner or an expert, experimenting with stains can yield beautiful results and enhance the aesthetic appeal of ceramic creations.

- Removes Stubborn Grease, Dirt And Grime
- The height of the package is 10.9"
- The length of the package is 3.1"
- The width of the package is 6.5"
User questions & answers
Question: | Is this only for carpet stains, or would it work on clothing? And if used on clothing, will it leach the color out of the fabric |
Answer: | I have utilized Folex for 6 yrs. or more and on any/everything. Various fabrics and materials; Carpets-furniture-pillows-mattress-drapes-clothing. I have not experienced any type of discoloration be it leaching, bleaching or otherwise. It leaves no physical or odor residue; needs no rincing nor clean up afteruse. I was most impressed with results when used on boxed/stored sweaters. Unknown at the time, Army contacted packers in Germany had enclosed some hand tools with the sweaters. Stored for year and before box was unpacked, an OK. tornado dropped our 2 story storage barn. When found, tools had rusted dark orange on 2 of my favorite pastel and bright colored stripes across white sweaters. Tried everything possible-no go. Several years later, a friend was using Folex sent to her on a carpet spot when her dog had thrown up. Using a slightly moist cloth to cleaned up the reminents she then sprayed spot with Folex; spot disappeared before my eyes. Humm. I borrowed to try on my sweaters. Sprayed, let set a few minutes, rinsed with cold water-twice, a shadow of the rust stain remained. So, resprayed and lightly rubbed on a pinch of OxiClean (still new to the market at the time, using alone didn't remove the rust stains). Sweaters still look new bought!!! Previously, could get only from a Houston, Tx. Walmart, purchased by friend's daughter and mailed to us. SO very happy to find Folex accessible on Amazon! I ordered a gallon & 1/2 ... just in case. CJ.D. |
Question: | what is the difference between the spot remover and the stain remover |
Answer: | My non-expert answer is that a spot is more surface and a stain is more soaked in. Folex will handle most of the small ones, 1" to 6". Others may take a stronger, more industrial application. But for quick clean up of spills and other small stains (especially recent ones) Folex works. I once went out of state and rented a room in someone's basement. The former renter was a student, and spilled drinks and food on the carpet. It took several applications and scrubbings on some spots/stains, but Folex took care of them all. |
Question: | is this 2 16 oz bottles or 2 32 oz bottles |
Answer: | I received 2 -32oz. bottles |
Question: | will this take red or yellow or purple kool aid out of carpet |
Answer: | Yes, it took me a couple of applications of rubbing or blotting gently but it did come out. I was amazed, shocked and surprised all at the same time because it worked. Couldn't believe it. I had white/eggshell covered dining room chairs that someone had spilled purplish blue ink, looked like from a pen. And a professional fabric cleaner told be that they would not be able to get that out. Had stumbled across Folex and tried it on my carpet worked like magic. Tried it on the chairs, I had to be patient and work with it but it worked. Wow!!! |

In 1969, Douglas G. Howard set out to solve this dilemma: how can you eliminate blemishes in wood finishes and restore the original color and luster without removing any of the existing finish? Unable to find an answer at his local hardware store, he went to work in his garage to create his own product. His goal was to make something that would be much more than a surface treatment, yet nothing like a stripper or a refinisher. The key was to develop a formula that could clean and polish the surface, penetrate the finish with stain, and leave the original finish intact. The end result was Restor-A-Finish, Doug Howard's first in what would become a complete line of wood care products. For over 40 years, Howard's Restor-A-Finish has been a standard in the antique industry. Because Restor-A-Finish preserves the original wood finish it also helps preserve its authenticity and value, whereas stripping the finish may literally strip the piece of its value. Almost any existing wood tone, from a Birdseye Maple to a Jacobean, can be closely matched using one of the nine available finish colors. Trying it on just about everything with a traditional wood finish, antique dealers, refinishers, and homemakers have found it to be a safer and easier alternative to stripping and refinishing. Scratches, oxidation, white heat rings, watermarks, smoke damage, and sun fade simply disappear.

User questions & answers
Question: | what to use to clean wood first and then after the application of restor a finish |
Answer: | I'm really not sure how that woul.d turn out. I think you will have to sand it down again and start over |
Question: | Will it help with acetone stain |
Answer: | We use it mainly on stuff inside the house, but have used it on things outside but after staining and its dry we use a water proof sealer. |
Question: | Which color should I get if I have dark expresso color wood |
Answer: | Interesting replies about sanding. You aren't sanding to "smooth" the surface, you are sanding to rough it up so the gel stain adheres better. Gel stain isn't like a regular stain that soaks into the wood, it's more like a paint. A light sanding is all you need. |
Question: | can you use it on floors |
Answer: | the main thing is the grain. this gel stain inhances grain when staining un painted... if your primered wood has grain it should enhance... great stuff. I stained a 2 inch space board over wood floors and matched it perfectly |

Howard Restor-A-Finish
Restor-A-Finish penetrates faded lacquer, shellac, and varnish finishes to bring back the original color and luster. It restores the depth of grain in wood finishes, going much deeper than temporary 'scratch cover' products. Restor-A-Finish penetrates and permanently restores most wood finishes without removing any of the existing finish. Restor-A-Finish maintains the original 'patina' of an antique finish, maintaining its character and value as an antique.
White heat rings and water marks, sun fade, oxidation, smoke damage, and most other blemishes can be quickly blended away with this simple wipe-on, wipe-off process.
Comes in 9 different colors. If you are uncertain about which color to use, then chose a color slightly lighter than your finish. Before you go to the extreme of stripping it, try restoring it!

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you mix this with a clear oil based polyurethane |
Answer: | Soap and water and let dry for 24 hers or wood cleaner |
Question: | Can this be used for concrete staining |
Answer: | Strictly speaking, it is not necessary. However, Red Oak has grain that (depending on the board) can present some difficulties with even-ness of staining. Using this pre-Stain prevents those issues from occurring and, in my opnion the extra time is well worth it. |
Question: | It states that it is water-based. Does this mean it will rub off or drip off in the event the material makes contact with water |
Answer: | I would, it will help prevent blotchy areas. Soaks right in, I have had good luck with it. |
Question: | Can more than one coat of stain be applied |
Answer: | I used this on cherry when applying a black cherry stain. In general, pre-stain makes the actual stain lighter. With the black cherry stain and no pre-stain it made the wood appear too dark and very purple. When applying the pre-stain It worked perfectly for what I was trying to achieve. I was able to match an antique dark cherry dresser almost perfectly. Always test with a scrap piece with and without the pre-stain but it works on all wood types. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what should I clean with |
Answer: | I had small spots to cover. I dabbed the product on and blended in with the surrounding area and then lightly touched with a clean cloth and area was dry within 15 minutes. |
Question: | Is pre-stain necessary for red oak |
Answer: | What do u mean wood paint ? Probably not as it is a stain and not a paint . Is the surface wood underneath ? |
Question: | Should I use this on pine wood before I stain |
Answer: | This product is exceptional at polishing a finish that is already in good condition. Since this product is more of a polish so it will correct very shallow surface scratches, but other products are designed to cover regular scratches, e.g. Howards Restor a Finish. I haven't tried it but I wonder if acetone causes damage to modern finishes. Acetone would certainly damage an antique shellac finish (french polish). If the damage is blushing (a white spot), this product may work, but so would mayonnaise. If the damage was from nail polish or remover, the damage was due to the ethyl acetate which dissolves old and modern lacquer finishes and nothing except refinishing or a talented touch up restorer could fix. You could try to lightly sand the area, use a similar colored magic marker to stain the area if needed, and use straight or thinned clear nail polish to fix the spot or use spray lacquer. It takes a little artistic flair and maybe the spot will look better than before, but what have you got to lose. There, I gave away my 40+ years experience secrets with restoration. |
Question: | Has anyone used this on Cherry wood? I also wanted to know if this would make a difference before I stain Cherry wood |
Answer: | I absolutely would try it. I sell antique furniture and have used this product on many peices. Success rate is about 85-90%. The key is choosing the right color. |

NORMAL USE: Spray the affected area and wait at least 15 minutes before laundering. TOUGH STAINS: Spray the affected area and massage the affected area with a soft brush. Wait at least an hour (can be left on for days), then launder with the warmest water the fabric care instructions allow. Opt for the "Extra Rinse" cycle. Some stains may require two treatments. FABRICS YOU CANNOT PUT IN THE WASHING MACHINE: Use exactly as "Normal Use" states. To rinse, take a clean cloth and bowl of warm water. Saturate the cloth with warm water, gently wring, then press into the stain and move back and forth with light pressure. This will pull the stain remover from the surface and replace with fresh water, mimicking a rinsing effect. Rinse cloth and repeat the same steps until the stain remover is "rinsed" from the surface.

Here's some tip on our Intense Crimson Stain to help you get the best results: Don't fire this stain hotter than 2300 degrees F (1260 degrees C), don't mix this stain into a glaze that contains zinc, and be sure the glaze does contain 6.7 to 8.4% CaO (12-15% CaCO3) The more stain you add to your glaze, dry clay, or slip, the darker the color will be. How much stain you add it's ultimately up to each person's personal preferences. Some useful (general) guidelines to keep in mind are that when using dark colors, you don't need to use as much stain as when using light colors. So for black, dark blues or greens, 5-10% of the total weight is usually a good place to start. For light colors, you should try 10-20%. In the end, we recommend that you always do some testing in small batches, so you can identify the best mix for the “look” you're trying to achieve. But this is the fun part of using stains! So enjoy and have fun!
