Answer:	This model Channelock 415 has smooth jaws, and not meant for pipe because there are no teeth tho grip the pipe. The smooth jaws are needed to tighten chrome fixtures to prevent marring. They will fit a nut say from 1/8" to about 4".

Answer:	They are metal. Not sure of the exact alloy content, but I've had my pair for about 8 or 9 years and use them regularly, and have yet to break them. The teeth aren't as sharp/ grip as well as they used to, but they are pretty old and still have plenty of bite. They are far from being considered worn out.
