13 best sensor for smart homes

Smart homes incorporate various sensors to enhance automation, convenience, and energy efficiency in appliances like portable dryers and washers/dryers. These sensors play a crucial role in improving the functionality of household appliances. Here's what you need to know about sensors for smart homes in the context of appliances:

  1. Moisture Sensors: Portable dryers and washers/dryers often come equipped with moisture sensors. These sensors detect the level of moisture in the clothes being dried. When the clothes are sufficiently dry, the dryer automatically stops, saving energy and preventing over-drying, which can damage fabrics.

  2. Temperature Sensors: Temperature sensors are commonly used in appliances to monitor and control heating elements. In dryers, they help regulate the temperature of the drying air to prevent overheating and ensure safe and efficient drying.

  3. Proximity Sensors: Proximity sensors can be used in smart appliances to detect the presence or absence of objects or hands. For instance, some washer/dryer combos may pause the cycle when the lid is opened, ensuring safety and convenience.

  4. Load Sensors: In washers and washer/dryer combos, load sensors measure the weight of the laundry load. This information is used to optimize water usage and adjust the wash cycle duration, saving water and energy.

  5. Vibration Sensors: Vibration sensors can detect excessive vibrations or movements in appliances, such as portable washers. They can trigger alerts or automatically pause the operation if an abnormal situation is detected, preventing damage.

  6. Light Sensors: Some smart appliances, including those with display panels, may use light sensors to adjust screen brightness based on ambient lighting conditions. This feature improves visibility and energy efficiency.

  7. Pressure Sensors: Pressure sensors can be found in some washing machines to monitor water levels. They ensure that the right amount of water is used for each load, promoting efficiency and preventing overflows.

  8. Gas and Carbon Monoxide Sensors: In the context of appliances like gas dryers, built-in gas and carbon monoxide sensors are essential for detecting gas leaks or unsafe levels of carbon monoxide. They can trigger alarms or shut off the appliance for safety.

  9. Humidity Sensors: In some smart home environments, humidity sensors are used to monitor and control indoor humidity levels. This can help prevent issues like mold growth and ensure a comfortable living environment.

  10. Motion Sensors: While not typically associated with appliances like dryers and washers, motion sensors can be part of a larger smart home ecosystem. They can trigger actions like turning on lights or adjusting thermostats based on occupancy.

These sensors contribute to the automation and efficiency of appliances in smart homes. They enable appliances to respond intelligently to changing conditions, improve energy efficiency, and enhance user convenience. By integrating sensors into portable dryers, washers, and washer/dryer combos, manufacturers aim to make household chores easier and more eco-friendly.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be set up to use and view on a desktop computer or does a person have to have a cellphone
Answer: The app can show water usage down to 1 minute intervals. So, in essence, you can capture the flow rate (GPM) of your appliances. The data is near-real-time, as there may be up to a one minute delay. We have had several customers use our device to do water audits, where they determine the flow rates of all of their appliances. As you said, you just need to run them one at a time.
Question: Does this work with a 240 line
Answer: On your meter, we can measure a flow rate as low as 0.02230774 gal/min. On badger meters, we are extremely accurate. If your meter says that you have used 100 gallons, the Flume device will say the same.
Question: Any monthly app fees
Answer: The Flume water sensor is powered by 4 user-replaceable AA Lithium batteries. In ideal conditions, these batteries can last between 1.5 and 2 years. All of the following are ideal conditions for maximizing battery life: - Outdoor meter pits where there is a direct line of sight between the Flume water sensor and the bridge - A short distance between the water sensor and the bridge (i.e. less than 500 feet). The shorter the distance, the longer the battery life. - Outdoor meter pits with plastic or concrete lids - Basement installations However, in some environments, the battery life can be much shorter. All of the following will reduce battery life: - Outdoor meter pits with metal lids - Outdoor meter pits that frequently fill with water - A long distance between the water sensor and the bridge (i.e. more than 500 feet) - Obstacles between the water sensor and the bridge, such as walls that contain rebar and automobiles
Question: Is there a subscription needed
Answer: I live in Austin, TX and purchased my Flume Water Meter this year in July of 2019. It is near the end of November and my battery still shows to be between 60-100%. The app only has three bars to represent battery consumption. I’ve not had any issues with the heat here in Austin, TX.

Turning Power Into Knowledge

Emporia has developed the next generation of the Vue Energy Monitor. Committed to bringing the best value as affordable possible, the Vue provides everything you need to monitor your entire home's energy usage in real time. See how much electricity your home is using anywhere, anytime.

Monitor Individual Circuits without the Guesswork

Add individual 50A sensors to your Vue to monitor up to 16 individual circuits — providing accurate energy use for the appliances and equipment that is important to you. No guesswork. No trying to discern energy signals from background noise. Just simple, easy, and accurate insight into your home. 50A sensors are sold separately and also sold in bundles with the Vue.

Measure Solar Net Metering without Extra Hardware

Solar net metering is built right into the Emporia Vue. The simple Emporia iOS and Android app will show when and how much electricity you are consuming and when and how much excess energy you are producing back to the grid — giving you keen insight into the impact of your solar panels as they relate to your energy use.

Installs in the Electrical Circuit Panel of your Home

The Gen 2 Vue installs in your home's electrical panel using CT sensor clamps that go around your mains and the other circuits you wish to monitor. DIY instructions included, but a professional electrician is recommended. The Vue system is designed for field installation in a switch enclosure as per 312.8(B) of the 2017 NEC regarding Power Monitoring Equipment.

Do You have Metal Bus Bar Mains in Your Panel?

Our Flexible Current Sensor solution is now available on the EmporiaEnergy website. These current sensors are meant to replace the 200A main sensors that ship with Gen 2 Vues. They employ a bendable Rogowski coil with a 1.4” (36mm) opening that can fit around most bus bars or into tight spaces where a standard current sensors clamp cannot fit. Installing the Flexible Current Sensors is still dangerous, and Emporia highly recommends that installation be performed by a licensed electrician or other qualified professional.

Add Emporia Smart Plugs to Your Vue

Emporia Smart Plugs (sold separately) can be added to your Vue system to help you to not only monitor the energy of lighting and small appliances, but to also set timers, schedules, and turn them on and off from anywhere, any time with the Emporia app.

[2] Remote control and mobile notifications require working internet and Wi-Fi.

  • Works with compatible Nest thermostats [1]; the sensor tells the thermostat what the temperature is in the room where it’s placed and the thermostat uses that reading to control when the system turns on or off to keep that room the temperature you like
  • Put different temperature sensors in different rooms, like the baby’s room or living room
  • Control your Nest sensor in the Nest app; set a schedule and choose which room to prioritize when [2]
  • Compatible with the Nest Learning Thermostat and the Nest Thermostat E [1]
  • The Nest Temperature Sensor is easy to set up; just hang it on the wall or place it on a shelf
  • The Nest sensor runs on batteries so it works in most homes; batteries can last up to 2 years
  • Add up to 6 sensors for each compatible Nest thermostat in your home

User questions & answers

Question: I am buying a nest e. do i really need to buy this sensor
Answer: You don't need this sensor to operate a nest thermostat. The best has a temperature sensor built in. It will take the room temperature where the nest is installed and regulates the AC based on that room. Some folks have the need to control an additional space during certain times of the day. Most common would be a bedroom during night time. With the extra sensor you can set up the AC to bring the temperature of the bedroom to a certain temperature regardless what the temperature is in the room the nest thermostat is in. So it's a comfort feature. You can try the next by itself and if you find that you want to change temperature control to your bedroom you can add it later.
Question: Hi my home has 5 zones do i need just one nest? or do i need one in each zone? would the sensors be good enough
Answer: If you are going to replace your thermostat with Nest thermostat, a one for one replacement for each thermostat. Now, if you have just one thermostat and five zones, then it implies that you are monitoring temperature and providing feedback to the thermostat for each zone. To put it simple one nest thermostat, plus sensors will give you the hability to keep one selected room at a temeprature desired. Just select the sensor you want to set as controlling. For more than one thermostat you will need the above set up multiple times. The Nest application is one the most user friendly apps I have ever used.
Question: How long does the battery lasts before it needs replacing
Answer: 2 years and still haven't had to change batteries.
Question: Will this work with Nest Thermostat Gen 2 with the latest software
Answer: Hi! Nest temperature sensor require an installed 3rd Generation Nest Learning Thermostat or Nest Thermostat E. Not compatible with Nest 1st Generation or Nest 2d Generation thermostats. Hope this helps.

Product features

Keep your home and family comfortable.

Most homes aren’t the same temperature in every room. Maybe the baby’s room gets too cold or the living room is too warm. Or maybe your thermostat is in a room where you don’t spend much time. The Nest Temperature Sensor helps make sure a certain room is just the temperature you want it to be.

How does it work?

Your sensor will tell your Nest thermostat the temperature in the room where it’s placed. Your thermostat will use that reading, rather than its own built-in sensors, to control when the system turns on or off. You can schedule it to use different sensors at different times of the day.

Compatibility.

It works with the Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen) and the Nest Thermostat E.[1]

Battery powered.

Wireless and runs on batteries, so it works in most homes. The battery can last up to two years.

Comfort from room to room.

Put temperature sensors in different rooms. And choose which room to prioritize when.

Simple setup.

Just hang it on the wall or set it on a shelf. Then forget it’s even there.

Control in the Nest app.[2]

Set a schedule for your sensors or learn more about temperature readings in your home.

Where should I install it?

In most homes, it’s best to install your sensor in a room where you spend a lot of time, like a bedroom or living room. Place it near chest height for the most accurate temperature measurement. And make sure it’s within 50 feet of your thermostat so they can communicate.

User questions & answers

Question: Do you have hard wired version? Normally the sensor is mounted somewhere out of reach. Why would anyone wants to change battery periodically
Answer: No one WANTS to change a battery periodically but if there is no available outlet, it’s better than nothing. And every couple of years is no big deal. (Plus it looks much better if there is no electrical cord running down the side of your house.)
Question: Can I use this to trigger other smart outlets
Answer: Short answer: Yes Long answer: It depends. I don’t know how home automation works with android, but Phillips Hue is Apple HomeKit compatible. The sensor shows up as 3 sensors in the Apple Home app, motion sensor, light/lux sensor, and temperature sensor. You can create automation rules in Apple Home that can control any HomeKit compatible outlet. I don’t know if Phillips Hue has released any smart outlets (pretty sure they just do lighting), but if so then you could probably create a routine for it in the Hue app. Note: If you’re new to HomeKit, you should be aware that Apple HomeKit automation only works when you have an Apple device acting as a home automation hub. This can either be an AppleTV or iPad (that stays at home). If all you have is an iPhone, it either won’t work at all, or if it does it will only work when your iPhone is connected to your home WiFi.
Question: How long will the battery last
Answer: About 2-3 years
Question: Any way to keep the floodlights on (at a dim level) and they get brighter when detecting motion. AND off altogether if it's daylight
Answer: Glad to see there's finally a work around for this. I previously had an app (I can't remember the name) that allowed you to create logic linked to any smart platform... and also use things like the Nest Doorbell... so I had it set to: Hue came on sunset at 10% dim. If Nest detects person, set Hue outdoor lights to 100% Brightness for 30sec., then activate scene 10% dim. It worked great, but the people who developed that app discontinued it. It worked for a while afterward too but then one day just stopped. I'm so glad to see I can do this again!!! (since you can buy "dumb" lights that do this on their own with 2 level dusk dawn motion sensors)

Answer: The sensor does “work” with the SmartThings hub but the sensors don’t stay connected for more than a few hours in my experience.
Question: Does plug integrate into element home app or do you have to use a different app
Answer: When I first used Sengled products it was their Element LED bulbs and the Element Home app was recommended. However when I subsequently purchased the Sengled Smart Plug, during installation it indicated I needed the Sengled Home app to continue. My initial thought was "now I need 2 Sengled apps for all this?" But that wasn't the case. The Sengled Home app recognized that the Element app was installed and automatically imported all my LED bulbs. As such, at the end of the Smart Plug install, the Element app was no longer needed and the Sengled Home app now controls both Sengled LED smart bulbs and Sengled Smart Plugs.
Question: What is the power rating on this device
Answer: The power rating (wattage) is 1800W.
Question: Does this plug support Zigbee 3.0 standards

User questions & answers

Question: How would one use this in a single zone house (single DX system) without dampers? One of my room is very cool while another across the house suffers
Answer: Hi Jupiter, with the T9/T10 thermostat you can select which rooms/smart room sensors you want your thermostat to focus on (which rooms it should measure). For example, during nap time, you may want the nursery room prioritized so the baby sleeps at the ideal temperature. You can even select multiple rooms to be prioritized, like all 3 of the bedrooms, and the thermostat will heat or cool the home based on an average of those rooms. If you have further questions you can contact our tech support team at 1-800-633-3991 Monday - Friday 9 am to 8 pm, Saturday - Sunday 9 am to 5 pm CST. - Maria
Question: Does this work on redlink technology
Answer: Thank you for contacting us with this question. This sensor does have RedLink 2.0 technology.
Question: Assuming I have a T9 installed, can the sensors be used to trigger events on other devices
Answer: The sensor talks back to the T9 to tell it a room temperature and/or if there is motion in the room. I don't know what you mean by triggering events on other devices, but at a base level, it doesn't correspond to any other devices.
Question: Can this control hydronic zone valves? So say for example the upstairs is much hotter than downstairs. The valves upstairs will be shutoff
Answer: Hello Adam. This sensor works with the Honeywell Home T9 and T10 pro smart thermostats, not compatible with zoning systems. Feel free to contact us at 1-800-633-3991 if additional questions or concerns arise. We'll be happy to help. Thank you.

User questions & answers

Question: How to wire up voice thermostat with only 2 wires ,r and w
Answer: In most cases, Nest thermostats can get enough power from your system’s heating and cooling wires. But in a small number of situations you may need to connect a common or C wire to deliver enough consistent power to your thermostat when your heating and cooling wires are not able to deliver the needed power for your Nest thermostat. Battery drain issues normally happen when the power from your heating and cooling system goes out. The 2 AAA alkaline batteries are used as a backup, or to supplement if your system can’t deliver enough power.
Question: I don't have a 'C' wire... how difficult is to adapt the Ecobee using the included cable and how is it done
Answer: No
Question: If you have an echo (alexa) in the room already, is there a way to turn the alexa on the thermostat “off”? or turn off the microphone/listening
Answer: I found an interactive video on my utility’s website (Commonwealth Edison) that ran through the wiring questions. It will tell you if your system is compatible with Nest thermostats.
Question: Can the Mic and Alexa be turned off
Answer: No. Sensors are not compatible.

  • The Package Width of the product is 14.22 inches
  • The Package Height of the product is 15.49 inches

User questions & answers

Question: Will the t10 control ventilation and also use over cooling to control dehumidification
Answer: Absolutely you can overcool to (try to) control humidity. Google Resideo document 33-00462 for instructions
Question: Will the T10 thermostat auto change from heating to cooling
Answer: Yes it does.
Question: Will this run off of two wires only (red & white)or do you have to have a C wire
Answer: It need a C wire to keep it powered all the time. A two wired connection only closes 1 set of contacts to turn the furnace on when heat is needed. There are some work arounds where the two wires provide both control and full time power to the T-Stat but they probably aren't universal and may not be satisfactory.
Question: how is this controlling room to room temperatures
Answer: You can set it to prioritize a specific sensor or take an average of a group of sensors. I have 2 of these: 1 controls the living spaces for heat and the whole house A/C with 2 remote sensors. The second controls heat for 3 bedrooms with 2 remote sensors. The first I have set to average out the temps for the living room/kitchen/dining room. The second is set to prioritize the middle bedroom. Mine is configured for boiler/baseboard heat. You just have to play around with it to see what works best. It was certainly cheaper than re-zoning the whole house. A side note: if you have separate heating/cooling, as I do, power/neutral has to come from the A/C transformer. Just a weird HVAC thing, took me forever to figure it out... Something I wish the unit could do: I wish you could program remote sensors to multiple thermostats so that I can better average out/prioritize the A/C. I have the T9 variant so maybe that is possible on the T10 Pro...

User questions & answers

Question: What if i’d like to use more than 2 units? how can i add more, if i have multiple properties to manage
Answer: StreamLabs finally put out an update to allow the app to add/monitor more than 2 devices up to a maximum of 5. However, they now charge $5.99 a month rent to utilize more than 2 monitors for life. You buy the device for $199 and then pay them rent each month to use it forever. (assuming you wish to add a 3rd, 4th or 5th unit to the account as in multiple properties to monitor). Sad as this is a great product and instead of urging customer to buy more, they penalize them and incentivize the customer to NOT buy additional units.
Question: How small of a leak can it detect? Can it detect a dripping faucet
Answer: The Monitor can detect flows as low as 0.25gpm on Copper-M, CPVC, and PEX pipes. The lowest it can detect on Copper-L is 0.5gpm. Typically a dripping faucet is too low of a flow rate for the Monitor to detect.
Question: Is the company working on making the historical usage data more robust? Making it so an owner can see the usage over a period of months or even a year
Answer: Nope! I spoke to them couple of times about that, trying to convince them how important that is, Unfortunately no fruit was produced..
Question: Can’t seem to find what power source is required. Battery operated or does it require an outlet
Answer: It uses an outlet. It is not battery operated.

User questions & answers

Question: Google assistant support
Answer: As of about Jan. 26, 2021 there is now Google Assistant support (with Google Nest/Mini Home Speaker support). I tested it, and it works. Don't try to add device with Assistant app. Ask Google Home to "talk to SmartDry" after setting up smart speaker support in the SmartDry app.
Question: seller. any chance of making of one these with zwave built in? this would allow for audible chimes or alerts with a zwave speaker which i have
Answer: Seller, why not just make a zwave version, and eliminate the need for a receiver outside the dryer to make up for cost? You could even use zigbee, which would be closer to the current frequency, doesn't need the z-wave license, AND you could connect directly to echo plus, echo 4th gen, show 8 etc. without the need for users to be into other systems. There is s market for devices like this, even if it raises the price.
Question: Seller, what temperatures are your batteries rated to? I'm nervous about putting a battery in my dryer
Answer: Great question! We take design and safety very serious here at SmartDry. The batteries that are supplied with SmartDry are two high quality Panasonic batteries (one already installed and one extra). The battery is only at risk of damage or explosion if batteries are disposed in fire or heated above 212 F. Gas and electric clothes dryers typically operate at a max temperature of 155F, well below the rated max. SmartDry has a built-in safety feature that sends an alert to your smartphone if it sees temperatures exceeding 165F. Temperature spikes over 165F are an indication of clogged vents that can create hazardous conditions in your dryer. SmartDry alerts users so that they can be aware and act if needed well before it becomes a real problem. For more piece of mind, we have spent a lot of time selecting the right battery that delivers the best performance and the highest safety to our customers. We have done extensive temperature, moisture, and real-world testing without ever having a battery failure. We also continue to add hundreds of hours a day in a large installed base that now has accumulated many thousands of operational hours and again no failures. Every unit is also tested 100% with batteries installed through full real-world temperature and humidity cycles prior to shipping from our factory. So, no unit is ever assumed ok, they all get tested. We have also built into the patented design, extra physical protections around the battery compartment for extra protections. For the longest operational life and safety performance we only recommended replacing the battery with the type and model we supply. I hope this gives you the information you need to feel comfortable knowing SmartDry is safe and is watching out for your safety also! Many thanks, Team SmartDry
Question: Does this product integrate with samsung smartthings? if not, are there plans to do so? contact me if i can help or provide more info
Answer: We are very excited to announce we have started Beta support for Samsung Smart Things. If you would like to activate your SmartDry to run on Samsung Smart Things please contact [email protected] for further information. Many thanks, Team SmartDry
